4 out of 5 stars Great reference book........2007-09-23

This book has may types of fish profiles, including many popular aquarium fish, and great pictures. It has the nifty plastic jacket, which anyone with a fish tank will appreciate. It is a small enough book to bring with you to the fish store, and informative enough to make you glad you brought it.

3 out of 5 stars Not too bad.......2007-09-23

An OK book that is very brief in its details of fish species and occasionally slightly inaccurate with regards compatibilities. Very nice pictures that get it an additional star from me just because they make species identification a lot easier than some of other books. It has a nice plastic cover for those times when you're reading and dripping at the same time and is handily pocket sized for taking to the shops with you.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-05-24

Not a lot of detailed info, but it's a great visual reference guide. I love it and it's cheap!

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful for the new aquarist.......2007-03-10

As someone new to the hobby, this book helped me tremendously in selecting not only what fish I could and should put in my new fish tank, but helpful tips as to how I should care for them (Ph levels, water temps, compatible types, etc.). I reviewed this book and read "The Essential Freshwater Aquarium" guide; both books help ensure that my first try as an aquarist results in a healthy environment for my fish. I was so impressed by the A to Z Guide that I bought one for a friend who has kept fish for over a year but was mixing fish indiscriminately without regard to the size of her tank or the type of fish already in the tank. We both now have a high enthusiasm for our aquariums and consult the guide before any new fish purchase. Highly recommended for new and experienced aquarists.

4 out of 5 stars Tropical Freshwater Aquarium Fish.......2007-02-20

This books fits our needs quite well. It is appropriate for our 7-year old son while at the same time provides details an adult reader would find interesting and useful.

a great book with good information my only complaint would be that it does not cover a wide variety of species.

This book is really great for the person that loves a big book with wonderful color pictures. It's one of those books you can just sit down for hours and look at all the beautiful pictures and detailed information of each tropical fish listed. There's also a detailed illustrated guide on how to set up a home aquarium and a list of common illness and treatments for sick fishes. I highly recommend this book for any aquarium enthusiast!

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST BOOK REFERENCE.......2006-08-14

I HAVE WANTED THIS BOOK SINCE IT WAS PUBLISHED, AND WHEN I COULD
GET IT FROM YOU, I TOOK IT IMMEDIATELY. I FIND IT TO BE THE BEST
OF REFERENCE BOOKS AROUND TO DATE. THANK YOU.

5 out of 5 stars Truly exceptional book.......2006-07-27

I enjoyed the book immensly. I read it in one day cover to cover all 900+ pages. Very informative and great pictures of fish. I have been a hobbyist for 20 years and I still learned something from it.

1 out of 5 stars A space filler book .......2006-06-23

The author doesn't even include the temperature to keep the fish.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-03-12

I wanted one great dictionary for reference as I just got started with my aquarium a few months ago. I found this to be badly indexed, and since it is alphabetical by Latin subspecies and then Latin name within it, they assume a great deal of knowledge right off the bat. Then you need to look up the common name in the index to find the latin name and my most common fish aren't even in there under common name (ie., Molly, Platy). Guppy is under "D" in the index, a typo for "G" - which makes me think this wasn't even proofread. I really didn't need information on freshwater fish like bass and pike, since those aren't aquarium fish, so don't understand who the audience is supposed to be. Many fish in here measure over a foot in length. I have an aquarium, I'm not going fishing.

4 out of 5 stars A Very Good Reference but not Perfect.......2006-03-04

Unlike many previous Tropical Fish books from the Tropical Fish Hobbyist publisher that were not much more that an unorganized child's picture book, this Encyclopedia is well oganized and has a great common name and scientific name index. A desciption of the fish is on the left page with two corresponding pictures on the right page which makes for easy reading. I would rate this book 5 stars if the descriptions were more detailed. It leaves out temperature range, PH range, sexing information, etc. even though there is sufficient room in the description area for about 40% more verbiage. I recommend this book to be used in conjunction with the 4 Volume set of the Baensch Aquarium Atlas which provides much greater detail of each fish species.

3 out of 5 stars Great Photos - But Somewhat Lacking Otherwise.......2001-08-16

With the exception of the first 21 pages, this 127 page book is devoted to some 200 photos of popular fishes. Photos are excellent as are symbol keys related to aquarium requirements. Also has a 4 page listing of common aquarium plants and their needs and suitability. However, with a total of only 8 pages devoted to aquarium set-up, this book is insufficient for the beginner putting together his first aquarium....Overall, a good book to have if you are purchasing it for the photos and related key symbols.

5 out of 5 stars Great basic, easy to read, very well structured book...........1999-08-27

This book has a very comprehensive aquarium setup, filter and maintenance guide. After this section comes info and colored pictures of different kinds of fish, including it's adaptability, breeding info, temperament and the care it requires. All is indexed at the end of the book....The only down side to this book is that if you're interested in only ONE kind of fish, it won't make you an expert....All in all, this is a great book for what it was designed to do: help you decide what fish you want to buy.

4 out of 5 stars Great basic reference book!.......1999-06-18

I enjoyed the fact that every fish is presented in full color. This makes it easier to identify the fishes. Though the most common are listed, these are good ones to start with, and I found this book to be an informative read!

4 out of 5 stars Good, especially the photos. Basic, could be more detailed........1999-04-04

A good book for beginners looking for something to start with. It has good care and basic breeding information of freshwater and a few brackish fish. Photos are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars outstanding, great for both beginner and expert.......1999-02-18

David Alderton's International Encyclopedea of Tropical Fish is an outstanding edition to anyones home library. Not only is it informative on tropical fish alone, it covers everything you would need to know as a beginer and expert in this fascinating hobby. As a collector of chiclids I was excited to learn that they to made a grand appearance in ths wonderful hardcover. Sincerely, John J. Browne

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice section on Fish Identification, less on Technicals.......2001-12-13

I like this book, but I bought it because it had information on fish rarely found in most aquarium books, mainly the loach families and fairly good coverage on catfish families.

I completely agree with Scott Hieber about the Maturation portion of this book though. It does not make any sense. Other than that I had few problems with this book.

2 out of 5 stars Good descriptions of fish-weak on technical info.......1999-10-21

A small sparse book that covers a lot of fish & all of the basics of care and keeping -- sometimes devoting as much as a page to a particular topic. Contains some old fashioned thinking. Sandford actuallly tells you to set up your tank & let it sit without fish for a month so that it can mature. Actually, the maturing (i.e., estabilishing nitrate bacteria and nitrite bacteria for the nitrogen cycle) doesn't really start until you provide food (i.e., fish waste) for the bacteria. So the month of waiting without fish in the tank is not only old hat, it's unscientific & shows that Sandford probably never measured the ammonia/nitrate/nitrate levels in a tank during this empty tank break-in.

The question-and-answer format that accompanies the text throughout is useful on questions of fish behavior but less so for technical info like "Why is my tank cloudy?" or "What's the advantage of a canister filter over a hang-on power filter?"

There must be better sources of info available. In fact, searching a few sites on the web will get you more & better technical info than this book contains. But the pictures are generaly very good & there are lots of them. For each fish there are descriptions of habitat conditions, although these are "in-the-wild" conditions, which don't necessarily include ones that will also work well in home aquaria.

5 out of 5 stars Dont make mistakes with your first aquarium, buy this book!.......1999-05-08

Gina Sandford presents an increadiable amount of information about fish keeping, in this very easy to read and understand, book. It clear explains every aspect of setting up a tank and keeping fish. It will answer all your questions, including the ones you havent thought of yet! The best part of the book is the profiles of the 7 common groups of fish. Each provides a tank conditions & care guide which will prevent you from placing the wrong fish in the wrong settings.

2 out of 5 stars So, so book, kind of old information.......2006-09-12

This book was published in the 80s, then re-published in the 95. Most of the information is kind of old. It does not have pictures for most of the fish listed.

Another thing I don't like is the lack of common names for the fish. It is one thing to have the proper name, it is another that a big portion of them missing common names. I would say about 60% of the fish listed don't have common names.

I would not spend more than $10 for the book, considering what you get out of it.
