New additions for the sixth edition include the Hippos on Holiday, Disney Film Classics Collection, Disney's Fantasia and Jungle Book, and The Nursery Rhymes Collection.
Maintaining the Charlton Catalogue tradition, all of the over 60 additions list the title, model number, designer, colour, issued and discontinued dates and varieties. Book Description
The eighth edition of Storybook Figurines, A "Charlton Standard Catalogue," is completely updated with recent releases and current market values. Royal Doulton, Royal Albert, and Beswick storybook figurines are illustrated and their technical data listed.
Thirty-two colour plates are disbursed throughout the book in eight page sections. The first two sections, or 16 pages, are devoted to the figures of Beatrix Potter. Almost all `BP' figures, along with their varieties (177 individual images) are illustrated to assist in identifying the different characters in your collection. The third 8-page colour section, is devoted to Jill Barklem's Brambly Hedge storybook figures, 68 individual images, which may be used by the collector to assist in building a meaningful collection. The final eight page colour section covers the Royal Doulton issues of the Winnie the Pooh collection, 69 figures are illustrated in this group.
The main body of the catalogue, which includes the black and white images, the technical data, and prices, has been reviewed and updated to bring it current to 2005. Eight new releases were added to the Brambly Hedge chapter, while nine were added to the Winnie the Pooh section. Millennium Collectables added three new releases to their popular line of 20th Century Advertising Collectables.
The fast moving collectable market, brought on by the on-line auctions, is instrumental in the Storybook catalogue now being published on an annual basis. Price movements now dictate that if collectors wish to be current, they must have a current program.

The Charlton Standard Catalog of Royal Doulton/Beswick Figur.......2000-08-08
Don't even THINK of selling your Royal Doulton figurines without consulting this book, the "bible" of priceguides for collectors! You will be amazed at the current value of your collection after consulting with Jean Dale's latest edition. Prices have skyrocketed over the past few years so this is an invaluable resource if you are looking to divest...or if you are just curious about the value of your "treasures" for personal satisfaction or for your homeowner's insurance company. Carry it to auctions, flea markets, and garage sales....and you'll be the expert!

Indispensible for the beginning gardner.......2005-03-21
This book is wonderful. I'd be lost without it. It's also a very enjoyable read. It does not pretend to be an encyclopedic reference, so get something else (with photos...) for that purpose.
You need to do some serious research because info is dated.......2005-01-08
Like Linne Faulk, who wrote a related guide, I am a transplant from Michigan. Moving to Florida was just about equal to moving to another planet. My wife and I are homeowners in Cape Coral, found ourselves in Plant Hardiness Zone 10b, but you know, you just have to try different things. We have a butterfly garden which went way whacko with too many dune sunflowers and not enough tropical salvias, gallardias, firebushes, and Bahama cassia.
One item to update (this anecdotal book was published eight or nine years ago): There is still Miami sludge, Grade AA, but it is no longer known as "Florida Organix" or "daorganite". Further, in talking with the Lee County Extension Office, products such as Milorganite and Grade AA Miami sludge are being panned as less effective than originally thought.
Ultimately, I found gardening to be an art - you never truly master it. But while you're doing it, you must keep your mind constantly engaged because you do learn something new - sometimes paradoxical - every day.
I enjoyed the book immensely, especially the old-timer's (Mr. Songdahl) stories. Two of my favorites are the guy who put his whole lawn in a rock garden and bronzed his mower and the transplant who received a one-sentence report on the soil sample he sent back to his old extension agent in Iowa: something like "The only things you don't need are rocks and seashells." So true of Cape Coral, and it seems the only remedy for the packed ocean bottom we have for land is the annual amendment of compost or green manure. By the way, we're soon to come under water restrictions, so think more in terms of lots of native plants and very little, if any, grass. Being an old corporate accountant, that's my Plan B for what it's worth.
The wise gardener who is computer literate first will link with the Universtiy of Florida website at http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu. This site has been a treasure trove of gardening and horticultural information - along with "texts" to help in becoming certified as a Florida Master Gardener, one of my goals.
Charming .... but there are better books.......2000-01-14
The folksy information really isn't much for true gardeners but some may enjoy it. If you're really into gardening, there are far better books.
The Art of South Florida Gardening.......1999-12-28
Excellent primer for gardeners in the southern counties of Florida. Pen sketches. No photos, so you'll need a garden/plant photo book too.
Humorous tips and practical advice on Fl gardens, lawns, trees & shrubs along with their 12-month growing season. Includes short descriptions on some of the more beautiful or well-adapted plants to use in the suburban landscape.
The authors also cover specific challenges south FL gardeners face regarding soils, wet/dry periods and bugs. Conversational style and short chapters but thorough. Gets you to want to go outside and start planting! Excellent!

Skip This Title.......2006-12-28
As we are recent northern transplants, I was looking for a couple of books for my wife as an introduction to Florida gardening. I would not recommend this one. It is quite out of date, with an original copyright date of 1954. It reads more like a textbook, which I suspect it may have been at some point. There are no pictures of plants, trees, shrubs, etc. and only a few rudimentary pen and ink drawings. For a much better overview and introduction to gardening and general residential landscaping, a much better choice, which I purchased at the same time, is: Florida Gardener's Guide, 2nd Edition [Illustrated] [Paperback] By: Tom MacCubbin, Georgia B Tasker.
essential book for the deep south gardener.......1999-11-06
Gardeners in the southeast have a totally different environment from the rest of the country and this book comprehensively addresses those issues. This book contains listings of both rare and common plants that are excellent for the southern and/or tropical garden. The book also deals with issues posed by gardening in the southeast. Many of the plants discussed are coming back in popularity as specialty annuals for the northern gardeners as well. Highly recommended for anyone living in or moving to Florida and the Deep South.

Excellent Reference.......2003-06-05
Although not the most interesting "read", this is a great reference book for gardening in South Florida. Straight forward without too much fluff. The section on pest control is a little heavy on identifying pests and little light on how to control them but the rest of the book is very clear on the basics. Probably not the best book for an advanced gardener but I highly recommend it for the novice like me who wants the nitty gritty on how to get going in Florida but doesn't care about a fancy looking book.
Very good reference for selecting bedding plants in Florida.......2001-09-22
I thought this was an excellent reference for selecting Florida bedding plants. I wanted a book that had lots of pictures of various plants and told me when and where to plant them. This book does that. It is limited on pest control, but has a good basic section on digging and prepping your bedding areas. It would be a great reference to take with you to the nursery when you are trying to decide which plants to purchase for your beds. It has more color photos for identification of bedding plants than most of the Florida gardening books out there.
Poor.......2000-05-18
I was so dispappointed in the presentation made in this book that I sent it back. The cover and even title give the impression that the book will include photgraphic and descriptive information regarding landscaping. What actually comes across is a very boring, poorly presented reference type of book that simply seems like an elaborate dictionary on various landscape terminology. The photographic connections were especially done poorly; all pictures relating to topics were simply united together in a large section at the back of the book. When a reference is made by an author regarding a specific subject, it is certainly best understood and appreciated by the reader when both are on the same page. It was also misleading in their title reference to Florida plants, shrubs, etc., that there would be direct inclusion of information of those subjects, but all that comes across is very general information relating to the words themselves. I have been working on my own Florida yard area now for over 5 years, enjoying what I have been learning by simple hands-on techniqe and questions to my neighbors. None of my own 26 personal plants were even directly mentioned in the book. Again, possibly some of the topics regarding pests or plant diseases might have been appreciated if the information would have been on the same pages as the related photographs--needing to turn clear to the the back of the book every time was a frustrating way to try and understand the connections.

Book Description
The existence of a separation between science and literature has long been taken for granted. This study shows that in science language functions in very much the same way as in literature: it is rhetorical in that it persuades readers to the author's point of view, and it is poetical in that with its metaphors and other figures of speech it shapes the experience of author and reader. The separation between science and literature proves to be untenable. This has important ontological implications: science can no longer be considered an action performed by a speaking subject on a mute object. Does the creative role of language in science mean that human beings `create' the world? The author emphatically rejects a conclusion which would degrade nature to mere malleable material at the mercy of human beings. A hermeneutical model for the relationship between knower and known is suggested: creative interaction between reader and text. The reader's responses actualise a text's meaning; in like manner, scientists give their responses to reality by actualising one of many possibilities. The hermeneutical ontology proposed in this book steers away from the rocks of realism and anti-realism.
