Mrs. Thomas is a mentor as an author of a pugs books. When you are going to have this breed as a goal in your breeding program and in your show interest you should have this book, because she teach you the most important thing above all: This are not only competitor and some cash money... They are our companion in every day life... our barking friends... Our beloved pets. And in the way she shows you how the breed developes and where are the princials breeders taking it... A great fun to read and a enlightment experience as a beginer pug breeder. In short hand: This book teach you how to be a pug man!

If you could own only one PUG book, this is the ONE!.......1998-08-02

I currently breed other breeds of dogs and am now searching for a PUG. This book has all the information you need to purchase a pug. It includes grooming, showing and training as well as problems with the breed. Before you buy a pug read the chapter "choosing and caring for a pug puppy"! This book has great photos however they are all in black and white!

Best Pug Book on the market today !.......1998-07-02

This book was so complete, from giving the full history of the breed to complete information on each of the major breeders of the dog today. I found that this book reads easily, is entertaining as well as informative, and provides information not previously covered in other Pug books. Its a must-have! - Susan Aschner, Pug Lover.

Bad info about the breed.......2006-01-26

As the other reviewer said, the book have some wrong informations about raising a pet dog (like feeding table scraps). After reading things like that I'm really afraid of taking the info in this book in consideration, to care for my dog. The author seens to be more of a show dog owner, and puts that into the book, but since I know nothing about the subject, can't really tell if it would be good for someone thinking about show dogs.

I picked up this book at a local pet shop, because my husband and I are seriously considering buying a Pug. We already had one other book on the subject, but wanted to supplement it with more in-depth information on Pug care.

After flipping through just a few pages of "A New Owner's Guide to Pugs," however, I decided to return this book and get my money back. Not only was there a lot of misinformation throughout (such as the statement that pugs do not have a double-coat, or that you should use a choke-chain to train a Pug -- wrong!), but at least a third of the book is comprised of information about the Pug "Standard," which is not very useful for those of us who are mainly interested in buying and caring for a pet-quality Pug.

There are not a large number of books in print on caring for this particular breed, but if you want a basic overview of what to look for and and what to expect once you buy or adopt a Pug of your own, I'd recommend "Pugs: Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Behavior, and Training (Complete Pet Owner's Manual)" by Phil Maggitti as an excellent starting place.

Too modern.......1999-06-14

Technology is great, but sometimes building methods of native people are "better" than our scientific methods. From an engineering standpoint it was a great book but as a book for someone curious about many ways of building things I was a little disappointed.

Handy guide that you can take along. Not sure if needed to be so small. You really don't find ornamental grasses in the 'wild'. Ultimately, good for readers that have an interest.

The author writes from a very strong background gained from having planted many of the ornamentals described and photographed in this excellent book. There is much helpfull detail that greatly aids the reader in selecting plants.

Excellent Book!.......2006-03-21

I checked this book out from my local library in order to preview it before buy it on Amazon. I was not disappointed which comes as no surprise especially since I am one of the fortunate ones who, about 10 years ago, had the chance to study Ornamental Grasses at Longwood Gardens with Rich Darke. He knows his stuff. The book is well written, concise and intespersed throughout with the author's personal observations on specific genera and individual species. Excellent photography supports the text. Rich Darke is one of the best garden/horticultural writers of his time. I also highly recommend another of his books, "The American Woodland Garden" for his well written prose and the ability to articulate the beauty and nuances of each scene photographed as well as a plant's more endearing or not so endearing aspects. Stunning photography.

Over 330 bright, sharp color photographs illustrate as many different kinds of ornamental grasses. The grasses are cataloged alphabetically. But 32 categories preceding the encyclopedic catalog group the hundreds of kinds according to different characteristics. A few of these are clumping ornamental grasses, cool-season ornamental grasses, ornamental grasses for cut flowers, ornamental grasses for dry sites (and woodlands, dry shade, fragrance, etc.), and ornamental grasses for movement in breezes. Ornamental grasses are becoming increasing popular with today's gardeners because of their textures, variety, and adaptability. The book, in handbook format, covers warm and cool season grass diseases, most of which have pictures. About the first ten pages are dedicated to sharing causes and diagnostic procedures. Another short section covers developing disease control strategies.

The book is a good material for learning about specific warm and cool season grass diseases, but it is more conducive to reference due to its handbook format. A limited ten page section covers causes and diagnostic procedures for diseases. A section on developing integrated disease control strategies is also included.
