5 out of 5 stars The New Aquarium Handbook by Ines Scheurmann.......2000-08-10

This general reference book is excellent as it provides clear, simple, easy to follow explanations of some technical concepts involved in aquarium management: lighting, filtration, water chemistry & it's upto date with the latest products.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners.......1998-12-25

This is an excellent resource for the new aquarist. It is much like the one for salt water tanks and is designed in such a way that it will take you step by step through the processes of chosing a tank, chosing the right equipment, choosing fish, invertabrae, and plants, and finally, taking care of the aquarium.

4 out of 5 stars A very useful book for the novice adding plants.......2004-04-17

The ultra-experts may not like this book but I found it very useful in setting up my first complex freshwater aquariums with plants. Of course my goal was not to reproduce the exact conditions of Lake Whatchamacallit. But I ended up with very stable, amusing, and good looking tank that was easy to care for.

2 out of 5 stars More "bio-types" than biotopes.......2004-02-03

I was very disappointed by this book. While the general fishkeeping advice is sound, that can be found in many other books. I bought this volume specifically to obtain information on setting up accurate biotope aquaria, and here it fell far short of my expectations. As another reviewer commented, fish are thrown together simply because they come from the same general geographic region (i.e., Southeast Asia) rather than because they truly come from the same lake or river. Plants, too, are included inappropriately--despite what many authors seem to think, no authentic Rift Lake (Lake Malawi and Lake Tanganyika) should feature plants--only rocks, substrate, algae, and snail shells for shell-dwellers.

On the positive side, as I said, the fishkeeping advice is good. Additionally, while the "biotopes" given aren't real biotopes at all, the author does provide useful advice on how to simulate what I call "bio-types": the substrate, water flow, and other features of particular types of aquatic environments, such as river, lakes, and mountain streams.

Bottom line: If you're interested in setting up tanks that recall a certain type of aquatic environment, and aren't particular about whether or not the fish and plants you include are actually found together in nature, you may want to investigate this book. However, if you're interested in creating a true biotope aquarium, one intended to to be a snapshot of a specific environment, such as a Lake Tanganyika rocky reef, a small stream in Thailand, or a Rio Negro floodwater, look elsewhere. Despite the book's title, you won't find the information you need here.

1 out of 5 stars All style no substance.......1999-09-24

While this book has some nice pictures. There is very little actual information on setting up a natural aquarium.

4 out of 5 stars A good overview of biotope aquariums, but lacking details.......1998-05-21

This highly glossy book is divided into chapters regarding not geographical areas but types of biotope namely:

-Clear Water Rivers of the Central American Landbridge -Belly Sliders and Bottom Hoppers: Fish from River Rapids -River bank with Fallen Foliage -A Lot of Wood: An Aquarium for "Antenna" or Tentacled Fish -Overgrown Bank -Rocky shore or Beach Zone: Careful Fish Among Large Stones -Rubble or Scree Zone in Lake Tanganyka -Underwater Deserts: Life in the Sand

The descriptions and suggestions are somewhat biased towards the Central-Southern American Region, except (obviously) for the last three chapters which focus on the African lakes Malawi and Tanganyka. Asia and other parts of Africa are not given much coverage while Europe and North America don't feature at all. The author seems also to be very fond of cichlids of all types and origins and I believe this book could prove quite useful to someone considering getting into these and making their first, general choices. Personally, I find that this book has taught me some about the way different kinds of fish live but not enough of any particular kind to make a serious attempt at creating a biotope aquarium. The many photographs are mostly of fish in aquariums. Moreover, although the book does still contain some 60-odd photographs of field photographs, these are mostly landscape, above-water pictures of rivers, ponds, etc. Only a few pictures actually correspond to actual underwater scenes from nature and most of these are of the lakes Malawi and Tanganyka. Overall, I find that this book is good introduction to biotope aquariums, and would be useful for people trying to make choices about biotope types and those who would like to know what their fish are now missing in their home aquariums. It is not, however, provide enough information to attempt to recreate a real biotope with a reasonable degree of faithfulness, and does not take into account regional variations (gouramis from India-Sri Lanka are thrown in with the Thai, Malay,! etc, for example). -A good coffe-table book!

Thinking of getting a low-maintenance pet that requires little cost and minimal upkeep? After reading this book, you may want to reconsider choosing a fish. As author Gregory Skomal illustrates, creating a healthy environment for your fish is not as easy as you might think. Gone are the days of putting fish in a bowl and tossing them some fish flakes every now and then; today's savvy fish owners have freshwater aquariums with the proper pH balance and feed their fish household foods such as canned peas, raw ground beef, and cooked egg yolks. Part one of Setting up a Saltwater Aquarium includes chapters on the physical properties of a fish, helping readers understand the basic needs of their prospective pet, as well as the necessary information to set up the fish's new home. Part two guides the reader through the fish selection process. The third part of the book is the most thorough, including information on such topics as feeding your fish, keeping your fish healthy, and breeding your fish. The end of the book recommends resources such as clubs, books, and Internet sites that fish aquarists can access to keep their information current. Complete with illustrations and color photographs, Setting up a Freshwater Aquarium is full of interesting and useful information for the would-be fish owner.

A good book introductory book when it was published but does not contain the latest information. Shimek has written subsequent introductory book with additional information.

I think that this book was well written but it lacked information on modern filtration systems and was generally too far back in the past to be an outstanding reference. This is the only flaw i found in the book, otherwise it is a fairly good pick!

Book Description

A week-by-week practical guide to setting up and maintaining a superb living environment

As fishkeeping continues to grow in popularity, hobbyists are looking for authoritative advice and more sophisticated results.

Setting Up a Tropical Aquarium Week-by-Week is an encyclopedic reference that takes a fresh look at setting up and maintaining a tropical freshwater aquarium. New hobbyists are quite often impatient to set up their aquarium and want to add their expensive fish as soon as possible. This common misstep can have disastrous results that may discourage beginners from ever trying again.

To curb such enthusiastic impatience, this book presents clear step-by-step practical advice in a convenient week-by-week progression. The book uses detailed photographic sequences to follow each stage of setting up a warm water freshwater tropical aquarium in real-time over a period of ten weeks.

The set-up procedure starts with the first day, when the substrate and life-support systems are installed and progresses to the point at which the first fish are added - two weeks later. The book then follows the aquarium's development during the next eight weeks as the tank turns from an artificial environment into a living eco-system.

Alongside the main aquarium set-up sequence are photographs that show how to create two different aquascape designs based on a cube and a bow-front tank.

Profile sections show fifty aquarium plants and one hundred popular warm water freshwater aquarium fish at relevant stages of the set-up process. Throughout, the book explains the natural processes that occur so that fishkeepers can ensure ongoing success.

Combining clear text and simple-to-follow illustrations, Setting Up a Tropical Aquarium Week-by-Week is a crucial reference for tropical freshwater fish hobbyists.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for beginners.......2005-12-04

This book covers different topics from tank setup to maintenance. It is a well written book with a lots of pictures. Anyone can get a lot of information from internet, however, this book gives the best coverage of planning a beautiful planted aquarium step by step. I wish that I could read this before I bought my starter kit.
While this is a great tool book to own for a beginner, I do wish it can go a little bit deeper on some of topics.

5 out of 5 stars Lighting systems, cleaning and filtering systems, fish choice and feeding plants.......2005-10-12

There are plenty of books on the market which discuss the home tropical aquarium, from choosing fish to maintenance: so what makes Stuart Thraves' Setting Up A Tropical Aquarium Week By Week so special? It's his weekly focus on the project, from day one to week 12, which offers step-by-step clear instructions on how to correctly set up a tropical freshwater aquarium. Lighting systems, cleaning and filtering systems, fish choice and feeding plants: all are given photo embellishments and very clear direction.

5 out of 5 stars THE best general freshwater aquarium reference I've read........2005-03-31

This is a great and complete reference for the beginning to experienced aquarist. Excellent photos demonstrate what the text explains. The author not only introduces the more difficult technical procedures for keeping an aquarium, but clearly explains how to implement them and the natural processes they affect. I also particularly enjoyed that the author frequently discusses the latest innovations and equipment for the home aquarium. If there was one book for the aquarist that I would recommend, it would be this one.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Beginners Guide.......2004-12-07

Wow, I wish they had a book like this when I started fish keeping. I think there would be fewer fish in heaven if I had a book this informative. From tank choice to maintenance, the 12 weeks this book covers is jam packed with practical information. This book includes helpful information on plants, filters, fish choice, fish diseases and much more. The step-by-step photos are great and extremely easy to follow. The information is timeless and very well done.
This is a great gift for anyone who has or wants to get a fish tank.

4 out of 5 stars Good guide for the novice fishkeeper.......2006-08-07

This short, illustrated book provides a compact and useful introduction to tropical fish commonly kept in aquarium tanks. The book goes into detail of how to set up a tank, how to maintain it, and what fish to put into it. The book comes complete with color pictures of the various fish, their characteristics and the challenges of keeping them in an aquarium tank. The book itself is quite inexpensive, and worth the cost and time to read it.

          1 out of 5 stars I don't like it.......2005-09-29

I can't recommenf this book. It only introduces very common fish. It tells very little about the fishes and the pictures are bad too because they are not photographs but drawings. This book doesn't even look good in bookself because it's so small.

          5 out of 5 stars I like this book!.......2003-09-02

I am a newbie at fish and aquariums. I checked this book out at the library and looked at it and it was wonderful. Then I ordered 2 other books....I was GREATLY disappointed in them. This little books shows you pictures of all different fish and tells you if they are aggressive or not. Most books I have found dont tell enough about what kind of roomies your fish should have or what they eat. I think if you are a newbie you need this book. It is a nice reference! The best and the cheapest that I have bought so far! You wont be sorry if you buy it!Just gives you a sence of some place to start to by fish for a community tank.

                    Book Description

State and Peasant in the Ottoman Empire studies the dynamics of Ottoman peasant economy in the sixteenth century. First, it shows that contrary to the conventional wisdom about the `stationariness'of the Asian agrarian economies, Ottoman peasant economy witnessed substantial growth in response to population increase, urban commercial expansion and to increased taxation demands. Second, the book argues that economic development did not take place independently of political structures, of the state. This meant that in the light of the fiscal and legitimation concerns of the Ottoman state and contrary to the assumptions of the models of economic development, changes in population and in commercial demand did not result in the disruption of the integrity of the small peasant holding as the primary unit of production. The book develops these arguments in the context of a detailed empirical study of the economic trends, of the state rules or institutions that embodied the relations of revenue extraction, and of exchange in Ottoman Anatolia.
