Maxwell Award Winner!.......2001-02-27
Hello everyone!
I wanted to let my readers know that The Book of the Greyhound was recently awarded the Maxwell Award as the best Single Breed Pet Guide for 2000. The Award was presented by the Dog Writers Association of America at a Ceremony and Dinner at the Southgate Tower Hotel in NYC on February 11, 2001. I was grealy honored to receive this award and want to take this opportunity to thank my Editor, Connie Isbell, and everyone at TFH Publications who worked so diligently to bring this book about.
The Book of the Greyhound covers just about every detail related to owning and loving a Greyhound. It covers the history, standards, performance activities, showing your Greyhound, adoption, top show dogs and producers, and breeders from all over the world. This is the most comprehensive book published about the Greyhound and has been very well received and reviewed by its readers.

As a greyhound adopter and a Mom, I love this book! It is informative, entertaining and heart warming. The artwork is lovely, and the verses are easy to read and understand for toddlers through kids age 8.

Bobby Parker is lonely and wants a pet. He selects a Greyhound out of a dog book when he observes his long legs and sad eyes. Thus the search to find the perfect match begins.
The plot takes you through the adoption process as it exists in many parts of the United States. Colorful characters are introduced such as Jane the Pain, Grandma Lewis and her magical cleaners, Porta Potty Deedee and Gus with the disgusting eating habits. There are interesting and humorous scenarios including a Meet and Greet, a home visit, a great escape and the ultimate pet show.
Lots of facts about Greyhounds are woven into the storyline to make it educational as well as entertaining not only for children but adults as well.

I like books about animals. It was neat to hear how people are helping find homes for greyhounds when they can't race anymore. I learned a lot about greyhounds. The pet show was fun. I would like my school to have one too. I am in the fourth grade. Kids my age will like this book.

With a fourth grade hero, Ms. Ahrens covers not only the world of greyhounds, but the everyday struggles children have with good manners, clean rooms, homework, family and friends. It's a smooth read, with a happy ending!
GRIDDLE is GREYT !!.......2006-05-26
Even if you've never thought about adopting a retired racing greyhound, you and your children will want to read this book.
Doris gives a wonderful explanation of the adoption process, from submitting the application to the home visit to matching the greyhound with the family. When you finish this book, you'll want to go out and meet a greyhound. And I think that is exactly what Doris intended. This is a wonderful book to share with your children/grandchildren during summer vacation. I give it 5 stars but the five greyhounds at our house give it 20 paws!!
Charming at any age.......2006-05-26
A wonderful tale about the very special pet-hood involving retired "racers". Ms. Ahrens takes the reader through all the real-life stages of an adoption in a light-hearted and entertaining way. If I didn't know better, I would have thought it was purely fiction. Ideal for teaching a young person about the process, but fun reading for anyone really.

Excellent primer for those adopting greyhounds........1998-12-31
I purchased this book on the recommendation of the Long Island Greyhound Transfer association. I then adopted a beautiful dog. The book is both precise and accurate as to what to expect of a newly adopted dog. I believe it is must reading for anyone interested in a greyhound.
A very "complete" book of Greyhounds indeed!.......1997-11-30
Very comprehensive and complete book about almost all aspects of greyhounds from ancient history to Ballyregan Bob the British racing champion, from Ch. Treetops Hawk the show champion to Cynthia Branigan the adopter of retired racer. Racing, coursing, AKC (show) greyhounds are all discussed in detail. The best things of all: most chapters are written by experts in their respective fields. For me, the generously loaded pictures including 16 pages of color plates are irresistible.

Good on personality and characteristics of breed.......2006-08-09
Not as comprehensive as Italian Greyhounds 21st Century, this is an excellent book. It mostly features European, esp. British, IGs in the discussions. It is easy to read while including a lot of detail about the breed. I had not seen some of the information on the personality of this breed and how that affects training in other books I've read and that was very interesting to me. This book is much better than some of the light-weight glossy breed books [yes, it does have many high quality photos].
My first and favorite IG book.......2006-01-10
This is the first IG book that I purchased when I got my first IG (mind is an older edition, I think). I found it extremely useful in getting to know the quirks of IGs (and mine have many) and the photos are beautiful. I would note that this is NOT the breed for everyone. They are hard to housetrain (especially for those of us with irregular schedules) and they have tiny little bones. However, you can't beat them for sweetness.
I've not read the "IG in the 21st Century" book, but this is the best of any of the ones I have seen on the subject so far. Gave 4 stars only because this is a newer edition than mine and may have some changes.
Great Book.......2003-10-08
This is such a great book.And such a surprise.The writer does a great job in keeping details non boring with her stories of who has had these wonderful dogs and how lucky we are today to still have the breed..She covers the basics and then some.Facts can be boring to us who dont no the history of the breed and who shows what, but the way the writer plays on telling facts inside of details makes for fun, exciting non boring read.I was not sure what to expect from buying this book since it had not been reviewed..and Im ever so glad I took the chance and plunged ahead with getting it.It has delightful pictures.. It makes for very good reading,and not just a one time read either.Youl find yourself reaching for it again and again and it will make for a good read everytime...B.W.

This book was a perfect resource to use with my 2nd grade students. The facts were basic and provided interest for our social studies unit on the racing greyhound. The illustrations add to the easy-to-read text structure.

This is a wonderful book full of facts and beautiful photos of greyhounds. Very helpful to people who have greyhounds and those who are thinking of adopting a retired racing greyhound.

A Small Collectors Helpful Guide To Information.......2001-04-08
I just secured the 14th Edition of Rosie's Secondary Market Price Guide for Enesco's Precious Moments Collection: ISBN 1-886812-07-1. This is such a wealth of information on markings, errors, values & just so much information that it is such an addition to valuing my collection and documentation of when it happened in the making of the special precious moments. I highly recommend this book to everyone. I have collected off and on since 1986 and they all have special meanings to me and this book helped me so much!

Wish it was as quality as previous editions.......2006-03-02
Working in the field of commercial/corporate interior design, I always look forward to the new editions of this book. I have Editions 4, 5 and now 6. Not that many books are written or photographed with the intent of showcasing corporate interiors and unfortunately No. 6's photographic quality was mediocre at best. I don't understand why a "photo" book would not require the entries to be top photo quality? I will not purchase #7 without flipping through it first.
Spectacular idea book........2005-09-10
You would think that there isn't much you can do with the traditonal office space. You walk in the door, there's a desk with a receptionist or guard to sign you in, the obligatory sick looking plant or two.
But in this book you can see what it is possible to do. Here some fifty of the top design firms present photographs of design projects they have completed for some of the top corporations in the country. Most of these are in the United States, ranging from New York to Los Angeles, only a few are overseas (mostly in England).
Generally eash two page spread shown one project to that there are a hundred and fifty or more projects illustrated with beautiful photography. The range of projects include manufacturing plants, hospitals, law firms, universities, airports, car dealerships -- virtually every type of business imaginable.

It highlights the brilliance of the Design firms by focusing on the innovative solutions through each of the 150 projects that comprise it. The photographs add to the visual stimulation, increasing its value far beyond the paper and the ink. A definate must to have around while studying, working or otherwise!
