5 out of 5 stars From the Stringman.......2007-02-07

Considered by many String Figure people to be the "Bible" in this field. It has easy to follow instructions using what has become standard nomenclature. This book is referenced in recent writings probably more than any other. Anyone with interest in String Figures should have this book in their collection.

5 out of 5 stars excellent and detailed.......2003-11-20

Once you master the language of manipulating the string--with a little patience-- you'll find the explanations easy to follow. The selection of string figures was wonderful. A strong collection --a legacy that has travelled throughout the world. Pass it along to your children.

5 out of 5 stars The mother of all string figure books!.......2000-12-08

Ms. Jayne was an interesting woman in her day. She traveled about the world, gathering anthropological research as she documented string figures worldwide. This volume is the result of her work, all the more remarkable because she did this around the turn of the century.

Many figures are included here with instructions in the creation of them, as well as anecdotal information based on her interviews with the people who taught them to her. All of the classics of string figures are included here, as well as more obscure ones she gathered along the way. This is a must for serious students of string figures, not only for the wealth of information and instruction, but also for its historical value.

5 out of 5 stars LA BIBLE DU JEU DE FICELLE.......1999-08-16

Il est très complet et illustré. Toute personne qui s'intéresse aux jeux de ficelle progressera beaucoup avec lui. Ce n'est pas un livre pour débutant.

5 out of 5 stars I was fascinated by this book when I was about 13 years old........1998-11-30

This book is a compendium of string figures with detailed instructions on how to make them and many illustrations. It is based largely on anthropological studies of the East Indies and that part of the world, although there are sections from Native American tribes and a few figures from Europe. My parents had a copy of this book when I was growing up and I was fascinated by it from ages 11 to about 15. I recommend it highly for anybody whose interests run in this direction.

With this newly updated guide, anyone who cares for an indoor cat can learn about its unique qualities and special problems-and make sure that living together is a wonderful experience for both human and housecat. Includes clear, comprehensive discussions of diet, grooming, behavioral problems, multiple cat households, common household safety, and cutting-edge health information.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Highly enjoyable as well as instructive.......2002-07-10

To call this is a guide makes it sound rather stodgy, don't you think? And this book definitely isn't stodgy. Ms. Curtis speaks with affection and humor. Sure, there is lots of advice here, and much is based on personal experiences detailed by the author.

A word here, and that is that you will find books that give contradicting advice. Veterinarians themselves aren't in total agreement. And Ms. Curtis speaks as an experienced cat owner influenced by veterinarians.

The whole spectrum of cat ownership is covered, from how to choose a cat to each aspect of indoor life for the cat. But most importantly, you get a sense of the author's personality and of her very genuine love and concern for animals.

I quite highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent book for the first-time cat owner.......1999-10-15

I read an old copy of Ms. Curtis' original edition of The indoor cat before I adopted my own cats. I had never even thought about whether they should go outside or not...I eventually adopted from a rescue group that stipulated in their contract that I not let my cats out without supervision, and preferably not at all. I was so glad I had read this book, because Ms. Curtis makes it so clear that indoor is best that my philosophies matched the rescue group's, and everyone was happy.

Most of all me, though, because I have two happy healthy, indoor kitties. Thank you, Patricia Curtis.

3 out of 5 stars Kitty doesn't need to roam.......1999-06-02

I read this book before adopting our pet from the humane society. It helped me understand that an indoor cat can have a wonderful, happy life, without running around the neighborhood, getting into danger and hunting songbirds.

In fact, they don't need as much space as I thought. our indoor cat is wonderful and well-adjusted.

    Good reference, I enjoyed it.

I found this book easy to read and informative. "Housecat" covers every aspect of life with indoor cats, as well as health issues faced at some time by everyone with cats in their daily lives. It gives you solutions for problems you never knew you had!! Now if only I could get my cats to read it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, Informative & well written!.......2004-02-21

An experienced and gifted writer shares her very thought out & comprehensive "Step by step" book on how to keep your feline happy in the house! This information is coming from someone who has delt with this situation. I've seen it "FIRST HAND" and know that this book is based on experience and truth!

5 out of 5 stars The simplest, yet most informative and readable cat care........2002-05-02

Because I am an experienced foster feline home, I read every cat care book available.I am not a vet so I need precise, yet relatively short info on many cat care topics. This book is good for the new adopter or cat care-giver who don't read or have accesss to real, in-depth publications. The paragrahs are specific, interesting and easy to read.I love this book and found that my cat adopters feel this is the first and best book to have.It is in the center of my library.Sometimes it is hard to find but I encourage my new (and even experienced owners) to read.It says it all- and simply!

4 out of 5 stars In the home YOU control who your cat associates with..........2001-12-17

I quite agree with the author - a cat should be kept inside. This is a MUST READ for any cat owner who TRULY loves their cat and puts feline welfare above their own. My own cat, Mrs. DiddyWampusnoodles of Pemblokington, a Registered Persian "vision" in light smoky gray, would NEVER be happy outdoors with those flea-invested rat-eating mongrel cats you find residing in the alleys and by-ways of lower class people who cannot even afford to clothe their pets in a proper manner.
The chapter on providing a stimulating cat-friendly environment is very good, although the author could have provided information on CUSTOM-made cat sofas and divans which are available from several fine craftsmen and well worth the $800 or $900. I replace DiddyWam's every other year when I redecorate her room, to ensure that her furniture "fits" the décor chosen by the Feline Interior Design Artist.
I myself would never attempt to trim DiddyWam's claws - I leave that to her personal hygienist, but I suppose if one were living in a remote area with no feline hygienists available, this would be useful information.

Overall this would be an excellent beginner's book for those who have just discovered the joys of existing with felines, and who wish to prevent their precious baby from mingling with inferior cats such as those found outside one's home.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source for broad-range of cat info.......2001-07-06

This book answered many questions I had (& ones I hadn't even thought of yet).

I am a first-time kitten owner, for lack of a better word. ("Owner" is not PC, I know.)

Having also purchased at least 5 other cat behavior/care books, I was happily surprised to find a different approach in Christine Church's HOUSECAT. She goes into detail on many subjects dealing with living with and nurturing your housecats, yet her style of writing is not dry. She writes in an easily understood, matter-of-fact manner that covered everything that I wondered and worried about, my being new to housecats. Just one example: she covers the different types of cat litter on the market, explaining what the merits & disadvantages are of each. Being new to all this, litter box filler can be confusing without some specific info and opinions about all the choices that exist, and she sufficiently covered it for me.

Her manner is that of an experienced cat person, having 11 herself (at the time she wrote the book), and this can be a refreshing contrast to that of a vet. (Books by vets are aboundingly helpful, but after purchasing more than a handful of them, I was interested in checking out a different perspective.) Also, having had as many cats as she has, she has diverse experience, such as living with blind and elderly cats.

Occasionally, you might not agree with an opinion or two of hers, as with anyone, but anyone with a cat (or cats) of their own can probably sort out the few ideas that don't work for them. This book is worth the sorting-out.

What a great book, even for someone who isn't a cat lover. I bought this for a friend but after flipping through it, ended up having to buy another so I could keep a copy. Martha Bayless has written what will surely be a classic in the field of kitty lit (not to be confused with kitty litter). I hope this is the first of many more amusing and, yes, practical books like this.

5 out of 5 stars Well written and researched, great book........2002-11-15

So many of these "rural history" books end up as nothing more than coffee table books with interesting pictures and words nobody reads. This book is an important exception, because not only are the images exceptional, the narrative that goes with the pictures brings the whole book to life.

In the writing, there is a certain longing, a wistfulness for what seems to be a more peaceful and idyllic time in the past, in the country, on the homestead. But this book is not just sanitized visions of a mythical past. In the many photographs, there is clear-eyed truth: rural life was often hard, a little brutish and sometime just plain dangerous.

For example, there is a striking images of a man riding a horse off of a 20 foot high platform into a shallow pool of water (page 89) is a reminder that what passed for "entertainment" back then might well get you arrested today.

As a reader, though, what struck me about this book was the sense that I could have known the people in the pictures, perhaps I would have been doing what they were doing back then.

That's what really makes the book work for me - it feels almost like finding an a family album in the attic, familiar but distant, and you want to just sit and slowly turn the pages and let the stories of long ago come alive.

A worthwhile addition to anyone's collection.

          5 out of 5 stars wonderful!.......2004-04-21

i was a bit skeptical when i saw the brightly-colored cover at my local department store. but i figured, what the heck - it's on sale!

and i was not disappointed. i'm a novice in every sense of the word - i've only started taking an interest in gardening. while the internet is a wonderful resource, sometimes i like having everything in one book. this is where basic gardening comes in: it has over 150 flowers listed (by name AND by color!) and their characteristics.

my favorite part, however, is the "how-to" part. for example, i learned to get rid of little flies by spraying my miniature roses with diluted dishwashing liquid. there's advice galore in this book and it's well-done. it doesn't talk down to you, but rather treats you like an equal.

the beautiful photographs in this book are worth the price alone. i recommend it highly to everyone who's starting out, and even to those who might be a bit more advanced. there's something for everytone!

            Book Description

The possible indebtedness of political economy to fourth-century Greek thinkers has been widely debated; the contribution of Islam, on the other hand, is consistently forgotten. This volume addresses this neglect by examining in three parts the following questions: Is there a school of economic thought that can be considered specifically `Arab', or have the Arabs succeeded in combining the Greek heritage with other, more oriental currents? Muslim economic thought has enriched the Hellenic contribution to economic thought in the areas of government of the kingdom by the caliph, of the city and the household organisation; the Arab concept of tadbir should be examined in relation to each of these three levels. In rejecting profit, usury, egoism and monopoly, and in preaching moderation, altruism, the practice of fair prices, and unselfishness, Islam inaugurated an `economic system' which has derived from that of the Greeks and which laid the basis for pre-capitalist thought.
