4 out of 5 stars Unraveling the illusions of the dark.......2006-12-01

'Night Life' is the result of one of those why-didn't-anybody-think-of-this-before ideas?
'Fear of the the night is natural to our species,' writes Diana Kappel-Smith, but we are definitely in the minority. Thus, if one wants to really know the natural surroundings, it is necessary to check out the dark. One is reminded of the pioneering naturalist Louis Agassiz' remark about his holiday: 'I spent the summer traveling. I got halfway across my backyard.'
Kappel-Smith, a translator of Spanish poetry and author of one previous natural history book, 'Wintering,' visited Hawaii, met some veteran University of Hawaii biologists and took them out for a night dive -- their first. Kappel-Smith's simple idea proved powerful. 'Once you've begun to unravel the illusions of the dark, you have to go on.'
Of course, although her U.H. biologists had never ventured onto the reef after dark, that doesn't mean nobody had. 'Night Life' only dips a toe in the complexity of animal behavior; its novelty is in a way of looking, not in the presentation of new information.
Early on, visiting the Arizona desert during the rainy season and North Dakota in the winter, Kappel-Smith tries too hard to create an arresting phrase, but as she delves deeper into the night, her writing sharpens. By the time she reaches Hawaii, she is capable of describing 'molten lava flowing downhill, flecked with crusty dark like a dragon's tongue' and cave animals as 'knots of ivory.'
By the time she returns to her girlhood home in Connecticut, she has relaxed sufficiently to write with great charm of ordinary things, of how she 'can taste the woodland underfoot by the sound of the leaves.'
As Agassiz knew, it is not necessary to safari in exotic places to encounter the mysteries of nature. Twenty acres of 'suburban countryside is richer in wildlife than many a chunk of virgin wilderness.'

5 out of 5 stars Great book for a beginner.......2007-05-17

I am just learning my way around the kitchen and I've found many cookbooks that use jargon that I am not familiar with. However, this book is great because it explains the definition of certain cooking terms. I've tried several of the recipes and they came out great! The book itself is beautiful and a pleasure to scan throuch and use.

        Book Description

This stunning book is a must-have for all collectors of open salt cellars, featuring in-depth coverage of examples made with American and English art glass, English and French cameo glass, clear and colored pressed glass, figural French faence, Russian enamels, porcelain, figural silver, and more. There are 941 full color plates showcasing over 3,500 open salts, many previously undocumented. These beautiful pieces were used before salt was processed to flow freely from a shaker. They sometimes held a block of salt which was chopped at with knives; other times they were used with diminutive salt spoons. The open salt became such an important part of fine dining that it remained in use even after the successful adaptation of salt to shakers. The wonderful assortment shown here ranges from eighteenth century Chinese export porcelain to examples made in the 1990s. The authors provide examples in all price ranges and media--some even made from shell, bone, and wood. Steuben, Tiffany, Pairpoint, Moser, Royal Bayreuth, Noritake, Daum Nancy, Meissen, Wedgwood, and Royal Doulton are just a few of the manufacturers represented. Captions provide dimensions, approximate dates of production, marks, values and various production techniques. Each salt is also classified by rarity. This is a comprehensive reference you'll turn to again and again!

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photos and Informative Descriptions.......2004-03-03

This book is a huge step up from the Heacock & Johnson 5000 Open Salts. The photography is outstanding and the descriptions are informative with current pricing. The authors did a wonderful job of publishing a reference book for open salt collectors which complements the H&J but focuses on higher end salts and includes very little duplication from those in the H&J. This book was long overdue for the serious open salt collector. Thanks for all the hard work to make it happen.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Beauty and Information.......2004-03-03

I must agree with the previous "Raves" about this book. I do feel that the new collector can benefit from it also - If I had been aware of such examples of open salts and the information given in this book - perhaps I would not have passed up some finer pieces in the beginning or made some of the mistakes in my early purchases. I have been a basic pattern piece collector but this book has kindled new interests in my collecting desires. I would strongly suggest this book be owned by all Open Salt Collectors - new or seasoned!!!

5 out of 5 stars Newest book in field of salt collecting.......2004-03-02

This book is a "must have" for long time collectors. For new collectors, it might be a bit expensive but well worth looking at for the information and comprehensive categories of open salt collecting. The photographs of salts and the price and rarity guide beneath each set of pictures is invaluable. Many books on open salt collecting are out of print or have outdated prices. This book is a wonderful feast for the eyes and a great deal of time and effort went into the gathering and photographing of collector's salts.

5 out of 5 stars Open Salt Compendium.......2004-03-02

The previous standard reference book for open salt collectors was Heacock and Johnson's 5000 Open Salts, dating to 1982, still a great basic book, especially for pattern glass. This new entry in the field is outstanding for its clear, beautiful pictures, informative descriptions, and recent price guide included within the text. It does, as one reviewer said, include many high end salts like Steuben, Daum Nancy, and Tiffany that may not be found on the beginning collector's shelf, but it's a wonderful look at what's out there in open salts, and there are many that the average collector certainly may hope to own and even have in the display cabinet. I have found it helpful, even invaluable, as I buy salts for my collection and try to evaluate what I see on the internet or in shops. There was a crying need for a new entry in the open salt collectors' book field. Definitely a 5 star book!

        5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2004-03-02

Gorgeous photography, great information and value guide. Open salts made of every conceivable material, antique and some newer. If you collect open salts, you will love this book.

              4 out of 5 stars Interesting Read.......2006-08-13

This book has lot of informative history of tobacco and tobacco smoking. The stories incouded were not only interesting but also full of intrigue. It includes a description of different pipes and their uses. I very much enjoyed learning about the humble beginnings of the Dunhill family. It does make a wonderful coffee table book. VERY WELL PLEASED!!

2 out of 5 stars More of a reference guide to pipes throughout history..........2002-01-31

While this book is filled with fascinating drawings of strange and unusual pipes from around the world, it is certainly not one of those "just sit down and read it from cover to cover type books." Think more of an "a to z" dictionary of pipes. As a novice pipe smoker, I was hoping for something more informative on the actual mechanics of pipe smoking. I would highly recommend The Perfect Pipe by Jeffers or, if you can find a copy, Weber's guide to pipes and pipe smoking.

A sampling of the recipes:

                - Southwestern Salad Rolls
                - Barbecued Spareribs with Cornbread and Herb Butter
                - Sesame Chicken Salad
                - Swordfish Brochettes
                - Risotto with Corn and Roasted Peppers
                - Autumn Fruit Pie

In addition to luscious recipes, Country Living Picnics & Porch Suppers includes in-depth information about cooking outdoors, with great tips for preparing campsite and stream-side meals.

Country Living expands the picnic concept to places with an "outdoor feeling" including an enclosed porch; a sunroom; or even hearthside. Whether a reader lives in a climate conducive to year-round outdoor eating or not, this cookbook will provide loads of picnic recipes and ideas to create the pleasures of picnicking whenever the mood strikes.

                3 out of 5 stars a little too fancy.......2003-04-24

There are some good recipes in this book, but not very many of them suited my tastes (brisket & frizzled leeks on corn bread, polenta & eggplant sandwhich, and tomato tapenade in squash cups, for instance). The book is divided categorically by type of food (appetizers, side dishes, main dishes, etc.). The book is interspersed with helpful bits of information such as the best foods for tailgate picnics, what the well-stocked picnic basket should contain, and grill tips. There are nice color photographs, though it would have been nice to have pictures of more of the recipes. If you have refined tastes for fancy picnics, this book is for you. If you're looking for the more simple side of a picnic, skip this one.
