Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book.......2006-12-02
I bought this book on the recommendation of the instructor of a course given at the New York Botanical Gardens. The book is so exquisite that I keep it within arm's reach at all times. Besides its beauty, the directory of plants, information on hardiness zones, and the section on things you need to know give invaluable practical information. With this knowledge, I have been able to keep a small container water garden going strong for over a year, even during last winter's snowstorms.
Great Plant List.......2005-07-29
The most helpful thing in the book was the easy to read, easy to understand plant guide in the back. It gives a photo of the plant and tells the growing zones, if the plant needs sun or shade, if it is an annual or perennial, and if it grows in in deep water, shallow water, or damp soil. The plant directory alone makes this book worth purchasing.
Quick and Easy Container Water Gardening.......2000-02-05
I was so excited to receive the book because I wanted to learn how to create wonderful water garden features. I ordered the book specifically to learn how to make the shishi-odoshi water feature. I was so disappointed to find that the book, which has great pictures, has very little information on how to do any of the pictured features. The book falls far short of my expectations. If I saw it in a book store, I would not buy it. It is a real disappointment that a noted horticulturalist, having the knowledge to help all of us novices, decidedly omits key information. This is not a quick and easy how to do book on water gardening. I can do much better watching Home and Garden Television. I wish I had my money back!
clever ideas but missing some practical information.......1999-07-31
Lots of clever ideas for small water gardens, as well as helpful general information on appropriate plants, fish, etc. However, it would have been nice if the author had provided a list of suppliers, at least for the more esoteric items. I too would like to make a shishi-odoshi fountain, but haven't the first idea where to buy the shishi-odoshi that is the first item on the list of project supplies (!). Also, while each of the finished projects is nicely photographed it would have been a great help if there were more photographs or illustrations of more of the projects in the construction stage.
Lots of good ideas.......1999-04-13
If you long to add the calming elegance of water to your garden this author shows many clever ways to achieve it. I like the simplicity of some of the containers-a window box, strawberry jars, sinks, etc. I plan to try the classical bamboo shishi-odoshi.A helpful plant directory is included too. -Linda Fry Kenzle, author of Gathering:Using Simple Materials From the Garden and Nature

Home Garden Hydroponics.......2002-03-13
This book, Home Garden Hydroponics, is excellent reading for prospective hydroponic gardeners, especially beginners. Complete with directions for building a hobby hydroponic greenhouse garden system with materials available at most home building centers, it includes an architect's drawing and material lists. It gives step by step directions for constructing a Conestoga wagon style hobby greenhouse using PVC pipes for hoops. Plastic rain gutters are used for growing trays. It also provides information for buying ready made hydroponic systems. Based on the author's four years experience as a hydroponic garden hobbyist, it tells a word and picture story of growing, basil, bell peppers, strawberries and tomatoes. Starting with a foreword of the necessity to develop alternatives to traditional dirt farming, especially in arid regions with poor soil, the author contends hydroponics should play a major role in feeding the starving people in impoverished countries. With a quick historical reviw of hydroponics, and how his own interest was piqued when he retired, the author tells how readers can emulate what he has done in acquiring knowledge and having fun with hydroponics. He relates how he does his gardening standing up eliminating, bending, hoeing, stooping, sweating and contending with soil borne creatures, diseases and biting insects. I like this book because it is written in a "down home" style. I especially like the author's offer to provide one year of FREE consultation by phone or e-mail to anyone who buys the book.

Thanks for trying, t.f.h.!.......2006-04-15
This book is done in a very entertaining and informal style, complete with cartoons and fun "sidebar" graphics (such as camera film, sticky notes, notebook paper, and paper clips). It's an introduction to the hobby, so readers shouldn't feel overwhelmed by the information; it introduces just some of the fish species and plant species hobbyists will run into. The price is quite reasonable, and this title is easily found (mine was purchased from a pet store).
However, there are some not-so-good points to the book that potential purchasers might want to weigh:
1) As the other reviewer mentioned, the book needs far more photos than it has--especially photos of the plants and fish.
2) The editing done on this book is probably its greatest downfall. One example is that commas are improperly placed, or not used when they need to be (an obvious instance is the second to last sentence in the author bio., viewable by clicking to see the back cover on Amazon). Unfortunately, editing errors are rampant within the book. At times, I had to read sentences multiple times before I understood them.
3) Some of the vocabulary is confusing and not adequately explained. For example, the author considers weathered whiskey barrel ponds to be formal, and he calls porcelain ponds and waterfalls informal.
I hope t.f.h. will release an updated and expanded edition. The topic is fascinating, and not enough stellar books exist on the subject yet. This one could definitely be one of them if some improvements were made in editing and content (expanded instructions and photos). I do want to say to t.f.h., thanks for trying!
Not enough info.......2005-08-24
I found this book frustrating. It gives great information about setting the pond up, but not much information about keeping a pond functioning properly. For example, it lists one solution for fixing aphid problems, but doesn't show pictures of what they look like so you have to guess if an aphid infestion is really what you have. I was disappointed it had so little information about dealing with plant and fish problems that inevitably come up after awhile. I also think it would have been helpful to have added more pictures of the plants it suggests using in container ponds. I guess I would say this book really is a super simple guide to container garden ponds, but unfortunately it doesn't cover or simplify many of the complexities that arise after it is completed.

Customer Reviews:
nice eye-candy, wish it had more depth.......2005-07-26
This is a 64 page book with photos. There step-by-step instructions (with photos for each step) for some of the ideas depicted. The photos of the results are very pretty, but not something like a beginner like me could achieve. There are a couple of photos of sample planted aquariums - I have a planted aquarium, but it's not something you would see out of a magazine or even an aquascaping contest (the photos in the book are)!
The instructions are very general. For example for one item you are told to paint with a "suitable preservative". Nor does the book go into much detail about the plants used, except their names, and that they will have to be trimmed or repotted often. I guess this is a good idea book if you you know more on your own about plants, the types of tools and materials you will be using.

Book Description
A book for every water gardener -- novice and expert alike * A primer for designing, building, and maintaining water gardens * How to select, care for, and propagate pond plants * All about goldfish, koi, tropical and native fish, and other pond creatures * How to maintain water gardens year-round * Dozens of tips * Detailed projects * 190 photographs
From the Publisher
Just because you don't have a pond or even room or time for one doesn't mean you'll never enjoy a water garden. All you need is a container no bigger than a fish aquarium and a few minutes a week. The beautiful and simple water gardening methods presented here are inspired by the Chinese, who've been doing it for nearly 5,000 years. Choose from a surprising variety of containers and plantings, from classic lotuses and small water lilies peeking out of traditional urns to pots and tubs on windowsills and door stoops. These miniature water gardens are a combined aquarium-terrarium and can excite the imagination more than either, even though they're easier to care for than potted geraniums or pansies in window boxes. Here is the basic information needed on how to select a container (anything you can seal and make watertight); how to maintain water quality (only a small pump, or maybe none); the most attractive low-maintenance plants and how to care for them; how to stock fish, prevent predators and pests, adapt your care to the four seasons, and much more; all with color photos to inspire your ideas, and closeup photos and drawings to show how to carry out each step of preparation, manufacture, and care.
Customer Reviews:
Many pretty pictures and neat ideas, but not enough info.......2001-05-06
This book is well illustrated and is a great "idea book" for people who want to see the many types of container water garden possibilities. There are also several useful tips that make the book worthwhile. Contents are: 1. Basics, 2. Tub gardens, 3. Dish and indoor gardens, 4. Hanging baskets, 5. Planters & window boxes, 6. Creative containers, 7. Patio ponds, 8. Fountains, statuary & wall containers, 9. Paludariums (semi-aquatic glass tank gardens that can house plants & pets), 10. Lotus, 11. Carnivorous plants. Who knew there were so many types of water container gardens? Several chapters have step-by-step pictures for setting up the containers and placing fixtures and plants.
However, the book is terribly deficient in detail - each chapter has about a brochure's worth of text. Although many pond books suggest that novices will find a container garden to be an easy first water project, there are some unique challenges - in particular: temperature control, selecting pumps & filters suitable for small containers, controlling quality of a small water volume, and choosing plants that are best for containers. I have several pond/general water gardening books, and I bought this book hoping for more info specific to container gardens.
The book is particularly deficient in information about the various plants. Unlike most water garden books, there is no section devoted to plant specifications and requirements (other than lotuses and carnivorous plants). In many of the photographs, the plants are not identified at all, and in some they are incorrectly identified. This severely limits the value of the book as a brainstorming tool. The book also does a very poor job of explaining the water quality and temperature problems that will arise if one attempts to add fish or other animals to the container. Finally, there is no climate zone related information, and there is no discussion whatsoever of what to do with these gardens in the winter.
Part of my disappointment with this book is that I bought the hardcover edition and paid too much for it (doh!). I think this book is worth it as an idea book, just realize that to create a container water garden of your own, this is by no means the only book you will need.
Nice but no detail........2000-06-15
This book illustrates nice ideas but falls short in details. Very basic.
Another plus for container gardening.......2000-03-22
I have a smaller suburban yard and every corner is utilized. Though envious of a friend with an in-ground pond and waterfall, I did not want to dig up exsisting shrubs and perennials to satisfy my yen for water. Since I already grow vegetables, herbs, ornamental grasses and perennials in containers, I thought why not a water garden. This book showed me what I could do with one of my empty oak barrels. I had a lovely mini pond with running water. I added 3 fish, water plants, and bought some toad tadpoles from a nearby garden centre. I liked it so much I'm going to do some smaller containers as well as a couple of glazed pots with water lilys. The only thing is to overwinter water plants you need a small indoor aquarium with grow lights, or a helpful friend with a pond. Enjoy and experiment! P.S. Although the toads might not be able to breed in my yard, for the rest of the summer the little toadlets were happily hopping around in my yard eating bugs.
Excellent water gardening ideas and examples!.......1999-05-05
I love this book! I have always been enamoured with ponds and water gardens, but thought I would have to own a home to have one. This book shows how to create the perfect container water garden for any size yard, patio, or even room. Great how-to's step by step. Gorgeous pictures. Great ideas. Thank you for such a beautiful, practical and affordable book!
I really enjoyed this book. I also enjoyed the color photos.......1999-04-21
I found this be book to be truly helpful as I'm a first time water gardener and I really enjoyed the fact that it had colored pictures.
