Building an Aviary
ASIN: 0974390410 |
Book Description
During the past 29 years, author James McDonald has had the opportunity to visit some of the most successful bird farms from Florida to California and exchange ideas. As a bird wholesaler and owner of one of the largest bird breeding farms in the state of Texas, he had many opportunities to learn from other peoples' mistakes as well as his own, and the designs included in How to Build Your Own Aviary, Cages, Nestboxes, Etc. and $ave A Bundle have proven track records. While the hobbyist raising a few birds may get by with doing things exactly like it was done 50 years ago, the bird breeders who wish to derive a profit from their bird breeding operations need the most up to date information that is available. Cage breeding has replaced colony breeding for many types of exotic birds. Bird watering equipment has dramatically improved. Convenience as well as the comfort of both the birds and yourself should be a factor in designing and equipping both commercial and hobbyist aviaries. By building your aviary correctly the first time, you will not only save money, but time as well.
This book was written as a practical guide for both the hobbyist and commercial breeders who want to save startup cost by building their own aviary and equipment. A great deal of money can be saved by doing it yourself. For example, the parakeet breeding cage described later in this book that holds two breeding pairs of birds, complete with tray, cost $10.20 to build. Manufactured cages of similar size and quality run from $50 to $70 each, plus freight. It doesn't take a mathematician to figure out that you can build 5 to 7 cages for the same price that you would pay for a single store bought cage. A little more math will reveal that if you build your own cages, you can probably save enough money to purchase top of the line breed stock to put in those cages and still have money left over, resulting in what would seem like getting your birds for free.
While there are some skills needed to build practically anything, you certainly don't need to be a construction engineer in order to build the things included in this book. Almost anyone with basic carpentry skills can build a suitable building that can be used for an aviary, and practically everyone can build the cages, nest boxes, etc. that are covered in this book. It's not even necessary to have a well-equipped home workshop. The things included in this book were built with hand tools and simple power tools such as a power saw, jigsaw, and drill.
The book is written in an easy to understand, reader-friendly style and includes over 200 step-by-step actual photos, 3-D drawings and illustrations that will guide you through every step of the process. The large 8 1/2" x 11" sized format makes reading and following instructions easy on the readers eyes.
Customer Reviews:
Not a word about outdoor aviaries in this book!.......2007-09-13
An aviary is more than a cage. I found this book very expensive for chapters that basically repeated the same info, with just a change of bird name etc. I was hoping for some plans to build an outdoor aviary, but this book is about mass producing cages of lower quality to house
hundreds of birds for breeding and profit.
Good "How To" Book.......2007-07-15
This is a good book. It is not for the person who has never built anything though. Fortunately my roommate is a real handy dandy person and can decipher these how to books quite easily. I don't know what half the tools are. So if you plan to use it to build cages or an aviary, you better know something about building things to start with, or have a good friend who does.
great book .......2006-11-10
this is a great book for those who want to start the bird business idea with the minimum coasts,it explains how to build all from scratches, the only thing taking against it is the black and white photoes used to explain how to make nest boxes and so ,but not really a big deal as long as explains all steps though building things.
Great guide for the do-it-yourselfers.......2005-02-26
The entire book is clear, concise and very informative. It is BY FAR the best book that I've found on building an aviary and it's sooo easy to follow. The pictures and illustrations are top notch.
Easy to follow.......2005-02-17
I'm not a professional reviewer or anything like that, I guess don't have the time or the desire to read a bunch of books, but this book helped me a lot. I'm also not a professional builder, but I remodeled an existing building that I had and built my own cages according to the plans in the book. We raise parakeets and our small business helps my wife and I supplement our social security.

dissappointing.......2002-11-02
This book is really only a small bird species guide. It really doesn't tell how to care for birds much at all. If you want a small reference manual for caged bird species then this book is for you. If you want a bird care guide, look elsewhere.
Good one for the collection.......2002-10-05
Informative and a nice quick referance book to have, good value and well presented.
Good details with pictures.......2002-04-27
This book has easy to understand literature and has plenty of pictures.
A vast well of information on different bird species!.......1998-08-25
As a Veterinary Technician, bird breeder and bird enthusiast,I highly reccomend this book to anyone interested in bird keeping. It is not limited to the normal birds as you might find in aviculture, as it has sections on wild birds, and birds of prey. It has 8 sections high-lighting the different families of birds, then breaks that down species by specie. It has a nice intro to bird keeping, housing, basic care and diet. I would have liked to see more info on manufactured parrot diets, but the author does have illistrations showing different seed diets available. In the birds section, this manual REALLY shines! it gives easy to understand symbols for at-a-glance comparisons to other birds. Some of these are: ease of care, size, noise level, aviary type, temperment, and basic breeding info. The photos of the birds are breath taking, and the book boasts over 200 of them! The last section deals with disease and first aid, a topic which would be a manual on its own, and the book gives good information in an easy to understand way. It's also a nice high quality soft cover book, that you can return to over and over. A must while at the bird show!

Good Bird! A Guide to Solving Behavioral Problems in Companion Parrots
ASIN: 0743227042 |
Book Description
You love your pet bird, even when he misbehaves, but how can you train him with compassion? Birds off the Perch proves that rewarding good behavior is kinder and more effective than traditional discipline through punishment. This revolutionary approach combines the expertise of an animal behaviorist, a companion parrot consultant and a veterinarian who use "family therapy techniques" -- such as learning to respect the bird's boundaries and viewing sibling rivalry in a broad, environmental context -- to help you change the mischievous behavior of domesticated birds, including:
Biting or aggression Screaming Sibling/bird rivalry
Jealousy toward its human flock members, and Feather plucking
With additional chapters on choosing the right species for your family, breeding behavior and the appropriate medical care for your bird, Birds off the Perch is the only guide you'll need to keep your pet birds healthy and happy.

Wish I had this earlier!.......2003-05-22
I got this a year after having my bird, and I wish that I had it from day one. The book offers great advice on how to live well with a compainion bird.
It is written in a straight forward manner, and even gives examples of birds that they have worked with. There is also a list of birds and what personality traits they have. This is a good book to get when making a choice to get a bird, it will help you be prepared to bring your bird home, and it will help you get the kind of bird best suited to your situation and lifestyle.

Not the best choice for my purpose.......2007-08-30
Because I could not "thumb through" the book prior to purchasing it, it did not serve as a good birthday gift for my 93 year old mother with very poor eyesight. Pictures are better than words for her I did not feel that she was happy with our gift.

The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Caged & Aviary Birds.......2007-07-16
One of the first books you should buy if you're thinking of purchasing any kind of pet bird. An excellent overview of most available. Great for the newcomer or experienced bird keeper.
If you are looking for great photographs, and thorough but general descriptions..........2006-03-20
this is the best I've found so far. I've read this book cover to cover, but it is also great to just pick up and flip to a random page. It would be great for a parrot beginner.
Nice book, but with little detail.......2001-11-19
This book is a masterpiece when it comes to picture quality and when you are looking for a book that covers the most common species. If you have special interest in one or some species, the book is far from detailed enough
Also, the book makes a great present for a bird lover.

Book Description
From the bastides of Provence to the affluent gardens along the Riviera, this book unfolds an entirely new vista of garden designs, images, and experiences. The over 500 illustrations, including 375 in full color, depict a rich and fascinating area of France where gardens have been at the center of social life for centuries.
These are contrasting types of gardens - the provencal bastides dating from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries retain the geometrical character of Renaissance gardens, while the garden culture of the coastal enclaves softens lines and forms with recollections of romantic Italy and Victorian England, and exploits the possibilities of luxuriant trees and shrubs. Yet these opposite types are united by their various responses to the challenges of a shared cluster of microclimates.
Sections of the book that discuss the social, economic, and climatic conditions of the area are followed by detailed and illustrated entries on 50 individual gardens. Each is described along with its history, and both plants and features such as fountains, statuary, and pergolas are itemized. A plan of each garden, accompanied by numerous views, makes this section of fundamental importance to the history of French gardens and - since many late nineteenth and early twentieth century gardens on the Riviera were created by international designers like Ferdinand Bac and Harold Peto - to the literature of modern garden history.
Michel Racine is an architect for the Ministry of Housing. He and his coauthors Ernest Boursier-Mougenot and Francoise Binet are founding members of the Association for the Art of Landscapes and Gardens.

Book Description
The terraced hillsides, rocky capes, and secluded coves of the French Riviera provide some of the world's most spectacular garden settings, and its delightful climate has drawn legendary figures in the arts, literature, and international society since the eighteenth century. In this beautifully designed volume, Louisa Jones turns her gardening and literary talents to the magnificent gardens of the French Riviera, some beloved by visitors for over a century, but most private and hitherto unphotographed. The author's love of plants and gardening really shines through in the text that weaves history, charming anecdotes, and a detailed description of the gardens and plants featured, from the Rothschild villa to the rustic vigor of a well-tended olive grove. Abundantly illustrated with stunning photographs by Vincent Motte, and complete with a list of gardens to visit as well as a buyer's guide to the best nurseries and plant suppliers in the region, Gardens of the French Riviera is a marvelous gift for any garden lover planning to visit the South of France.
