                      Book Description

This renowned reference book has served scholars, pastors, students, and those interested in the background of the New Testament for years. The insight given into the Essene community, the destruction of Jerusalem and the interpretations and traditions of the Old Testament in first century Judaism is invaluable. The outlook of Josephus, a late first century Pharisee and historian, on Jesus and the New Testament documents is enlightening and provocative. As an original reference, The Works of Josephus is essential to a full understanding of the first century, the time of Christ and the New Testament.

Complete and unabridged, this is the best one-volume edition of the classic translation of JosephusÂ' works. The entire text has been reset in modern, easy-to-read type; numbering corresponding to that used in the Loeb edition has been added to the text; and citations and cross-references have been updated from Roman numerals to Arabic numbers.

I believe a very accurate portrayal of the life and times of the first century ad. A good book of comparison for religious research.

4 out of 5 stars The Works of Josephus.......2007-07-01

Great condition, quick delivery. This is an important source of information about the early church and the Roman occupation of the Middle East as seen through the eyes of a non-Christian and non-Roman historian of the day. It helps one understand the politics, culture, and issues of the times. I have barely begun to read it, but have been been impressed with what I have read so far.

4 out of 5 stars Great source of information.......2007-03-09

Josephus is a great source for information about Biblical times. The format is similar to the Bible, but the language is not quite as clear as most of the common translations. I would recommend it as a historical companion to Biblical study.

                      4 out of 5 stars Great Translation.......2007-02-09

This reads pretty well for someone who is interested in actually reading what Josephus wrote which was my goal. I highly suggest it.

4 out of 5 stars The Works of Josephus.......2007-01-10

This is an essential work for understanding the political dynamics of Roman Palestine in New Testament times, and is one of the very few contemporary accounts that we have on the subject. It appears to be as comprehensive an edition as its title indicates, and the translation is accurate and thorough. Its one drawback is the difficulty of reading the fine print--a necessary compromise for a one-volume edition.

                            Book Description

It has often been said that rich pagan women, much more so than men, were attracted both to early Judaism and Christianity. This book provides a new reading of sources from which this truism springs, focusing on two texts from the turn of the first century, Josephus’s Antiquities and Luke’s Acts.
The book studies representation, analyzing the repeated portrayal of rich women as aiding and/or converting to early Judaism in its various forms. It also shows how these sources can be used in reconstructing women’s history, thus engaging current feminist debates about the relationship of rhetorical presentation of women in texts to historical reality.
Because many of these texts speak of high-standing women’s conversion to Judaism and early Christianity, this book also engages in the current debate about whether early Judaism was a missionary religion. The author argues that focusing on these stories of women converts and adherents, which have been largely ignored in previous discussions of the missionary question, sets the missionary question in a new, more adequate framework.
The first chapter elucidates a story in Josephus’s Antiquities of the mishaps of two Roman matrons devoted to Isis and Jewish cults by considering the common Hellenistic topos linking high-standing women, promiscuity, and religious impropriety. The remaining chapters demonstrate that in spite of this topos, Josephus, Luke, and other religious apologists did tell stories of rich women’s associations with their communities for positive rhetorical effect. In so doing, the book challenges the widespread assumption that women’s association with “foreign” religious cults was always derided, questions scholarly arguments about public and private roles in antiquity, and invites reflection on issues of mission and conversion within the larger framework of Greco-Roman benefaction.

                              Book Description

For centuries scholars have recognized the apologetic character of the Hellenistic Jewish historians, Josephos, and Luke-Acts; they have not, however, adequately addressed their possible relationships to each other and to their wider cultures. In this first full systematic effort to set these authors within the framework of Greco-Roman traditions, Professor Sterling has used genre criticism as a method for locating a distinct tradition of historical writing, apologetic historiography. Apologetic historiography is the story of a subgroup of people which deliberately Hellenizes the traditions of the group in an effort to provide a self-definition within the context of the larger world. It arose as a result of a dialectic relationship with Greek ethnography. This work traces the evolution of this tradition through three major eras of eastern Mediterranean history spanning six hundred years: the Persian, the Greek, and the Roman.

If you are interested in the origins of Jewish and Christian iconography, or in the way in which early Christians like Origen and Eusebius understood Jewish histories, then you will enjoy reading this richly illustrated book. I will quote from the jacket:

"The Jewish ancestry of Christianity is not merely a matter of religious sentiment but the object of scholarly research. One of the aims of this series is to analyse how Jewish cultural elements were assimilated by and adopted to the needs of the arising new religion. The present volume contains two seperate studies. Schrekenberg shows how successive Christian authors turned Josephus's description of the fall of Jerusalem into a confirmation of Christian superiority. Next he demonstartes how this view of the Jewish historian and his works appears in medieval Christian illustrations. In another contribution, Schubert discusses the existence of a Jewish pictoral tradition and its influence on early Christian art. Such influence was all the more likely where Christian artists were unaware of potential conflicts of the Jewish iconography with Christian doctrine. This volume is richly illustrated with reproductions of the pertinent works of art."

You may also enjoy "The Resurrection and the Icon" by Quenot.

The essays in this volume focus on the relationship between Josephus’ Judean and Jewish identity on the one hand, and his life and writings in the context of Flavian Rome on the other. From very different points of view the various contributions to this volume, which is the fruit of an international colloquium entitled ‘Josephus between Jerusalem and Rome’ held in the city of Rome in 2003, shed light on the complex cultural interplay in Josephus’ writings. After examining more general historiographical and literary questions, the volume proceeds to address specific issues of Josephus’ presentation of Judaism and of historical ‘data,’ inter alia about the war of 66-70 CE. A final section deals with the translation and transmission of his works.

Anyone even the least familiar with the writings of Josephus knows that they contain two references to Jesus. One of them, the most well known, has been dubbed the "Testimonium Flavianum," denoting a "testimony" by Flavius Josephus to events concerning Jesus in Judea.

For centuries, the two references to Jesus, and especially the "Testimonium Flavianum," have been hotly debated by scholars. At issue, whether Josephus really penned the words, or whether they represent a later interpolation.

But many today who know that the authenticity of the Testimonium Flavianum has been challenged through the centuries, do not know that there is much fresh scholarship on the matter, that in fact the scholarship has improved, and, that there is new evidence to bring to the discussion. Not only have more recent manuscript discoveries shed new light on the matter, but it is now universally recognized by scholars that earlier expositions on the matter, both pro and con, were more biased, sectarian motivated, than some of the more recent research.

Some of the new scholarship, more removed from the earlier predjudices, is well worth hearing, not to mention truly refreshing and surprising.

Dr. Alice Whealey (University of California, Berkeley) is one of those brilliant modern minds bringing fresh evidence and insight to the discussion. No matter what "position" a reader may ultimately embrace, he will be enriched, and his education enhanced, by hearing what Dr. Whealey has to say.

                                    Book Description

Flavius Josephus is without a doubt the most important witness to ancient Judaism from the close of the biblical period to the aftermath of the destruction of the temple in 70 CE. His four surviving works---Judean War, Judean Antiquities, Life, and Against Apion---provide the narrative structure for interpreting the other, more fragmentary written sources and physical remains from this period. His descriptions of the Temple, the Judean countryside, Jewish-Roman relations and conflicts, and groups and institutions of ancient Judea have become indispensable for the student of early Judaism, the Classicist, and the reader of the New Testament alike.

The priestly aristocrat Josephus was born in 37 CE and died around the year 100. After fighting against the Romans in the war of 66-74 and surrendering in the earliest phase of the campaign, he moved to Rome where he began a productive literary career. His four surviving works in thirty Greek volumes are widely excerpted for historical purposes, but still not often read in their literary and historical contexts. This project aims to assist every serious reader of Josephus by providing a new literal translation, along with a commentary suggesting literary and historical connections.
