Book Description
A lesson in the art of harness making that details the various types of driving harness and their design and manufacture.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book for the intermediate leather worker.......2006-03-31
I found this book to be an excellent reference book. Definitely not for the beginner! If you are looking for a book to walk you through every step of the process of making a basic harness, and hold your hand while doing it, then purchase MAKING HARNESS by Lewis Martin.& Daniel Preston
In this book the Author definitely expects you to know your way around a harness and have basic knowledge of leather working, and preferably harness making. However that said it does contain a lot of good tips for the more advanced leatherworker. It was interesting to see some of the different tools, such as pricking irons and lead rings, that are used in England that are not common in this country.
The book begins with an excellent section on the history of harness and its uses. The section on harness styles and uses is week to say the least. I was hoping for more description of the different harness and details of that harness such as what makes a Gig Harness different from a Wagon harness.
The section on making a complete harness, is incomplete! Again, the Author expects you to know how to make such mundane things such as traces, backstraps and tugs. Lots of tips on details, but very few patters or dimensions are offered. Excellent pictures of different parts of the harness but week descriptions of how to achieve said end product.
As a more experienced, but long way from being a master, Harness maker I was hopping for even more advanced techniques and descriptions on how to do the "tricky stuff" such as true rounds, hidden stitching, or inlay/overlay work, none of which are covered.
Overall a good book and I am glad that I purchased it as it is a good reference source. Just too bad it is not twice as thick!
You can do better........2006-01-29
This book is definitely NOT for the beginner. In fact, if you can understand where this guy is coming from then you don't need the book. One can learn more about harness from a Weaver catalogue.

Customer Reviews:
A must have book for the novice harness maker!.......2006-03-31
This book is an absolute must have for anyone interested in making their own harness or anyone just interested in how a harness is made. Most of the work covered in this book is on very basic "single strap" type harness. Good using, everyday work harness, not fancy show harness. This book is not intended to make you into a Master Harness Maker or show you how to produce fancy show harness. However this book does walk you through, piece by piece, in detail, how to make a basic harness.Another nice feature of this book is that It covers a wide range of harness from single light horse buggy harness to draft team harness. Lots of patterns and dimensions to use as guides. Excellent descriptions on tools and their uses. Fantastic source section in the back of the book where you can find everything you will ever need to make harness with, and best of all the sources are actually there!
The only thing that I found lacking in this book, which is also its strong point, is that it is very, very, basic, which I suppose is hardly a fault. I would like to have seen a little more on slightly better work, such as padded breast collars or breeching. Even a section on slightly less traditional harness such as how to construct a Gig Saddle, or Yankee style Draft harness would have been appropriate and most informative.
Overall an excellent book and I would highly recommend it.
Review of "Making Harness" .......2006-02-17
I found this book to be most helpful not only in cutting and stitching whole harnesses but in the tools and their uses. It is quite clearly written and easy to follow. The items made are of a basic sort and this would not be a book for advanced harness making. The only facet of the book that irked me was the manner in which the author writes as in his tone of a kindergarten teacher talking to little children. A personal thing but I found it most irksome.

Book Description
A wonderful blend of facts and humor makes learning about vegetable gardening fun and easy in Jerry Pallotta's newest alphabet book. Learn about fiddleheads, munchkin pumpkins, snow peas, walla wallas, and more!
Beautiful, color illustrations lead children through a brief introduction of soil preparation and seed planting, as well as through a discovery of both common and exotic vegetables.
Customer Reviews:
A clear, interesting presentation.......2007-08-05
While the "Victory Garden" aspect of this title might be a bit misleading, it does the book a great disservice to judge it based only on that issue -- Jerry Pallotta has, as usual, presented a lot of information in a clear, engaging format that my kids (ages 4 and 6) and I found very interesting.
Misleading title.......2007-04-21
While a perfectly fine introduction to vegetables, there is precious little information about the Victory Gardens in/of World War II. The illustrations of children dressed in mid 90s or later garb also negates the World War II-era/Victory Garden concept.
Book Description
With a patio, porch, or windowsill, gardeners can grow almost anything anywhere using containers. Arrangements in this guide begin simply, with one type of plant in a decorative container. The projects move on to combinations of two plants, then on to more complex pots involving three or more plants—some of the arrangements are even meant to go from container to garden plot. Design principles including color, texture, height, and depth are considered, and ideas for themed containers are included for holidays and other festive occasions. Species range from the tried-and-true garden varieties, such as impatiens and petunias, to newer plants on the market, such as a striking red ornamental millet. The planter plans include detailed photographs, diagrams, and instructions on getting the very best results from container gardening, for lasting natural beauty in any space.
Customer Reviews:
A thinly-veiled marketing tool for Ball Horticultural plants.......2007-06-03
Don't be fooled--this book is a marketing ploy for Ball Horticultural trademarked plants, from the glowing overview of Ball in the Acknowledgements to the Ball varieties listed in the Index. The author is National Retail Accounts Manager for Ball. All the container recipes use ONLY Ball varieties, over and over. The author subtly encourages you to search from garden center to garden center until you find the exact variety (i.e. Ball variety) you're looking for. And for this hardcover advertisement of Ball plants, they want us to pay $24.95 retail! To be fair, there are some inspiring container gardens in the book. And, to be fair, you could substitute other brands of plants for the Ball plants listed, but the total number of different plants used in the container recipes is limited.
If you want to see dozens and dozens of beautiful container recipes for FREE, go to the Proven Winners Website. Yes, the recipes are advertisements for their own varieties, but at least they're free!
Book Description
Revealing the variety of life underground, the bright comfort of a greenhouse on a winter's day, or the anticipation of starting seeds indoors in early spring, this striking alphabet book celebrates the simple joys of gardening. Without neglecting the frustrations -- the nibbling critters and the toil -- or wry, humorous moments spent in the garden. Mary Azarian's spare words and lovely woodcuts capture the essence of turning a bare plot of ground into fragrant flowers and lush vegetables and trees. Her depictions of insects, manure, and compost piles are as delightful as her fountains, pumpkins, and Queen Anne's lace. Whether we are young or old, our gardens both exhaust and renew us. They are our source of magic and wonder and perhaps our best way to live closer to the land and to the rhythm of the seasons.
Customer Reviews:
lovely, but..........2000-06-10
I got a chance to see Mary Azarian's new alphabet book yesterday. I think her illustrations are heartwarming and lovely, and have enjoyed them for years in the Cook's Garden catalog and in books like The Plain Reader. I'm also a gardener and a former children's librarian ,and I enjoy seeing gardening depicted in children's books. However, I must say I was sadly disapponted to see no people of color depicted in any of the illustrations in this book. Surely Ms. Azarian must have met a nonwhite gardener at some point in her life; if not, that's sad, and she is welcome to come to my house and meet me before the next book. As a person of color I felt saddened and left out as I looked through the pages; how would a small child (of any ethnicity) feel? Had it not been for this exclusion I would have joyfully given this book five stars.
Illustrations match a Garden's Beauty.......2000-05-22
Mary Azarian was inspired by her own garden and has used the perfect form of illustration - woodcuts - to bring to life the alphabet of a garden.
The perspecives range from above and below the ground and show not only the joys but also hardships that come from creating a garden.
The simple words and strong visuals will be great for children learning about the natural world, but is also a beautiful gift for the gardener or nature lover in your life.

Product Description
This charming book of hand-colored papercuts is guaranteed to delight gardeners young and old, active and armchair. It is a delicious garden alphabet, a convention as old as the sixteenth century, but one that seems to lend itself especially well to the advantages of high relief, gaily-colored papercuts.
In this vivid garden, where A is for Arbor and Z is for Zucchini, artist Wisnewski brings her talents to bear not only on flowers, shrubs, herbs, and fruit, but also on the resident fauna: bees and cats, children, dogs, and rabbits. The result is no static florilegium, but a witty and whimsical beehive of various and charming activity.

Book Description
Gardening on the west coast can be a frustrating undertaking. The adverse weather and wildlife in our region can be enough to turn some off for good. With the right information in hand, however, gardening in our luscious region can be as rewarding as anywhere else on the planet. The key to obtaining that ever-elusive west coast green thumb is Mary Palmer's ABCs of West Coast Gardening.
Here is a gardening book encompassing the broad spectrum of plants available to west coast gardeners, with handy tips on adapting a garden to the extremes of this place we call home. By following her advice, Mary Palmer believes that "any piece of west coast ground can be made endlessly bountiful, productive, glorious and satisfying."
After six decades of gardening--running a nursery in Seattle, working as the gardening columnist for the Seattle Times and homesteading on a British Columbia Gulf Island--Mary Palmer has gained the experience to turn even the most infertile ground into a thriving garden of vegetables, flowers, trees, shrubs - whatever your preference may be. There are sections covering every aspect of creating a garden from initial soil improvements to final landscaping and beautification techniques.
This unique book offers tips on how to deal with the worst in west coast idiosyncrasies. Moss, deer and blackberries will become obstacles of the past. The only problem left to tackle may be finding enough friends to share the bountiful harvest.

Book Description
Subject of The Many Canons of Tibetan Buddhism are both the mainstream Tibetan canons of translated Buddhist classics (known as the Bka' 'gyur & Bstan 'gyur), and the alternative canons of literature of the Nyingma sectarian traditions (known as the Rnying ma rgyud 'bum).
The first section discusses the formation and transmission of Tibetan "canonical" texts, but also includes important works of reference, such as a Bka' gdams pa handbook and several unique catalogues. It also features a first report on Tibetan textual transmission in Mongolia.
The second section not only presents interpretative analysis of one of the most important alternative canons in Tibet, the Rnying ma rgyud 'bum, but also discusses essential issues of legitimacy, authority and lineage during the "gray" period of the tenth to twelfth centuries which laid the foundation for the formation of all ensuing Tibetan canons.
The volume thus develops fresh perspectives on the nature, plurality and contents of canons in Tibetan Buddhism.
