5 out of 5 stars And now for something *completely* different..........2001-08-11

This slick little piece combines the principals of successful advertising with the sensual allure of professional-quality botanical photography. The basic principal being "Sex Sells." I'm not sure I could reasonably recommend this as an educational primer --although some of this information did show up on my Bio 101 lab tests-- but it's certainly an eye-opener as a coffee-table book!

Basically, this book is a "how and why" book on plant reproduction spiced up with advertising's finest babe and hunk shots to illustrate general concepts. It does a fine job of portraying the plants in your garden as wild and raunchy, not to mention absolutely unscrupulous in the pursuit of their goals. The author, Angela Overy, is absolutely shameless in her presentation --although, for the record, she does not cross the line into pornography: The occasional bras advertisement, and a strategically placed lily on page 47, but nothing worse than what you might see between the covers of Cosmopolitan.

The book, by the way, is more an overview of propagation strategies than a detailed analysis of physiology. She does go through the naming of parts and the basics of sexual maturation in plants, but then veers off into the politics of inter-species cooperation. Namely, how plants blackmail, bribe, and proposition birds, bees, beetles, ants, slugs, and butterflies (to name a few) in order to ensure successful cross pollination.

This book covers quite a bit of ground in its own irreverent way. It's got some interesting pictures depicting the color perceptions of several common pollinators, some very interesting material on Plan B strategies for pollination, and whole lot of really fascinating trivia. The juxtaposition of perceptions about plants and human sexuality is definitely attention grabbing, but it's the captions, which range from frankly informative to ludicrously suggestive, that make this book worth the cover price.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining, Informative, Very Readable, and Quite Useful.......2001-06-08

I just got a copy of this book, Sex in Your Garden, and I have been pleasantly surprised. There is a huge amount of interesting factual material in it. It is a bit bold for some folks, no doubt, but it is all actually in good taste. I think that this book could be excellent as a way to introduce younger students to the whole idea of sex and plants, or plant sexuality if you will. This subject is one that needs to be understood much better than it is now. Unlike most botany texts on the subject, this one is in plain English and it is fun to read. Hard core plant scientists may object to its tone and some of the wording, but I don't think it was intended for them in the first place. I expect that this book would be a good tool for getting students from grade 7-12 interested in some basic botany. Actually though, it would be informative for all of us "grown ups" too. I'm the author of Allergy-Free Gardening, from Ten Speed Press, and am especially interested in plant sexuality as it relates to allergies. I'd have to say this book is much better than I expected and I that learned quite a bit from it myself. The drawings and photos are first rate too. All in all, Sex in Your Garden is a very useful, informative, fun book. I highly recommend it! Thomas Leo Ogren

    5 out of 5 stars fantastic!.......2000-02-18

This book is a riot! I never knew there was so much - and so varied - sex going on in a garden. I hated botany in school because it seemed boring. But reading this book was so much fun - it made learning interesting and downright hilarious. The pictures and illustrations are fantastic and funny too. I'm not even a gardener but I loved reading this. I'd recommend it for anyone who wants to have a some good clean/dirty fun and learn something to boot. It also makes a great gift - I gave it to several friends and they all thought it was fantastic too!

    5 out of 5 stars very amusing - a great gift.......1998-06-15

This is an amusingly written book with a catchy title. I much enjoyed the way the author writes tonge-in-cheek about plant reproduction and relating it, indirectly, to human. The illustrations and photographs are of high quality and add much to the effectiveness of the book. The content seems to me to be well researched and scientifically accurate but the treatment is light hearted. This would make an excellent gift for anyone interested in gardens and gardening.

      Book Description

Through many hitherto unseen images the story of Berlin in the 20th century is told. Documenting the changes in the city from the viewpoint of the activities of its citizens: at work, leisure, home, protest and politics, this book provides a fascinating portrait of a city which is again in the process of reinventing itself.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Journey Through 100 Years of Triumph and Tragedy!.......2000-07-28

The history of the city of Berlin is perhaps the most interesting and tragic history of any capital city in Europe. Alexandra Richie, in her epic 'Faust's Metropolis: A History of Berlin,' gives her readers and extensive history of this great city. From it's birth to reunification, Berlin's sad pattern of always being in a "state of becoming, rather than being," is illustrated in great detail. Many times over the course of her history- Berlin has found herself in ruin. No other century was as disasterous for Berlin as the 20th century.

In 'Berlin: A Century of Change,' the reader is taken on an incredible journey of a city that at one moment was the mightest in Europe and the next was a wasteland of rubble. The reader is taken on a journey, from the celebrations of the marriage of the Kaiser's daughter in Potsdamer Platz to the views of the bombed out Reichstag, to the new architecture arising in post-Cold War Berlin.

The photos are extensive and beautifully illustrated. There are many photos from all the major events over the course of the century. The Imperial troops returning home in defeat following WWI peace. The massive Nazi parade grounds and Unter den Linden transformed into a Nazi show piece. Many arial photos of the hollow shell of the bombed out city following defeat in WWII! The massive crowds outside the Reichstag during the Berlin Blockade. This book has it all and is a wonderful pictorial exhibit of how vastly Berlin has changed in the 20th century. After visting Berlin last May, I have no doubt that the 21st century will see her emerge (finally) as the greatest city in Europe.

For further photographic books on Berlin, I would highly recommend Profitlich's 'Berlin Images.' This book is full of beautiful black and white photos of many of the great and beautiful buildings in Berlin.

For further information on the new architecture sweeping Berlin, I would highly recommend Kieren and Gottlieb Hempel's 'New Architecture Berlin, 1990-2000.' This book has tons of photos, descriptions and locations (including bus, U, and S lines) on the wave of new architecture that has swept Berlin over the past 10 years. Excellent book!

I would also highly recommend Foster and Jenkin's 'Rebuilding the Reichstag.' An awesome book on the history of the Reichstag, including tons of illustrations of past and present design competitions. As well, this book presents the history of the building from it's Imperial days, to ruin, to the modern dome. This book really illustrates how important the Reichstag is. It's not just a building- it's Berlin. What has happened to the Reichstag has happened to Berlin.

Lastly, for a historical text on Berlin- I would highly recommend Alexandra's 'Faust's Metropolis: A History of Berlin.' While it is quite thick (900+ pages), it is well written and extensive in covering every facet of Berlin's history- from politics to music, art, and literature.

If you have an interest in Berlin- the books mentioned here are essential and all available on Amazon.com.

            Book Description

5 out of 5 stars A DAZZLING AND INGENIOUS WORK OF FICTION...........2005-09-11

This is the original German text edition of a novel so beautifully written that it transcends into literature. Ingenious in its conception and carefully crafted, the author has created a unique and dazzling work of fiction. Divided into three parts, the book tells the story of a most unusual life, that of Jean-Baptiste Grenouille.

The first part of the book establishes that he was born to a woman who was hung from a gibbet for having left him to die. It turns out that Jean-Baptiste is an unusual baby. He gives people the willies, because, unlike most babies, Jean-Baptiste has no scent.

Over time, Jean-Baptiste develops into a boy with a secret gift. His olfactory sense is developed to a degree unheard of in humans. He delights in parsing the odors around him. Ugly, friendless, and a loner, he eventually ventures into the city of Paris, a malodorous and pungent cornucopia of smells. Believe me, there is plenty to sniff out in eighteenth century Paris! Jean-Baptiste savors each whiff, and the book conveys these olfactory delights with meticulous, descriptive precision.

His bleak existence is transformed, however, when he one day captures a heady scent of such exquisite beauty that he finds himself obsessed with it. Determined to have that scent at all costs, he eventually sniffs it out. It turns out to be the scent of a young virgin on the cusp of flowering into a woman. It is a scent that he must possess. What he does to do so will surely chill the reader.

Jean-Baptiste eventually maneuvers to get himself apprenticed to a perfumer, so that he can have the opportunity to learn the trade and create scents. He leads a bleak existence, subsisting as little more than a slave to the perfumer for whom he works. But no matter, for he learns all that he needs to know.

The second part of the book begins when Jean-Baptiste leave his employer and goes on a personal pilgrimage, leading an austere existence away from civilization for many years. There, he withdraws into himself even further, living a totally self-sustaining, hermitic existence. He ultimately realizes what other have sensed about him. Jean-Baptiste has no personal scent. He simply does not smell.

With this knowledge, he returns to civilization where, having lived as practically an animal for many years, he creates a fictitious and adventurous scenario to account for his filthy and disgusting appearance. Subsequently, he is taken under the wing of some local nobility and feted and pampered. Realizing the importance of scent, he creates a personal scent for himself. He now realizes that he who has the power over scent can rule supreme. He intends to do so.

The third part of the book has Jean-Baptiste migrating to a town that is the hub for the scent trade. Perfumes, oils, and soaps are the stock in trade for this town and, as such, beckon brightly to Jean-Baptiste. Once there, he again smells a scent so delectable that he longs to possess it. He knows that scent for what it is and now knows that it is the scent, and not the personal charms of its bearer, that captures the attention and devotion of others. Jean Baptiste wants to harness that scent at all costs. He desperately desires the power to make others love him. He wants to be supreme.

It is his desperate desire to harness and possess that celestial scent that causes Jean-Baptiste, a socio-path with little empathy for others, to prey upon the maidens of the town in order to obtain that which he needs. It is his obsession that lays at the heart of the vortex that arises in the town, as murder after murder occurs. Yet, no one suspects him.

What ultimately happens leads to an almost unbelievable climax, when Jean-Baptiste finds himself consumed by the passion he has managed to arouse in others through scent. This is a heady, quirky, and compelling debut novel, like nothing I have ever before read. Complex and lyrical in its telling, it is a novel that stays with the reader long after the last page is turned. Bravo!

4 out of 5 stars Germany's answer to Magical Realism.......2003-02-21

This is a wonderfully disturbing novel, full of magical circumstances and intricate historical detail. The language flows beautifully and it's a refreshing change from heavy standard-fare German literature. The detail is the main drawback of the book; Suskind gets bogged down in lengthy descriptions of scents and odors instead of flushing out the characters, some of whom are little more than flat cartoon figures. But then, that's what gives the book its magical air. So read it and enjoy!

            5 out of 5 stars great novel.......2000-07-21

I only want to say: if you like this novel, try to get your hands at the 'Donkere Kamer van Damocles', The Dark Room of Damocles" by the Dutch author W.F. Hermans. It's just as brilliant, even for those that don't live in Holland and therefore, i think, must put more effort in understanding the typical Dutch atmosphere Hermans present. About Das Parfum: it's exciting, brilliant, brilliant and so on. What to say about a book this good?

4 out of 5 stars Brilliantly Insane for the Senses.......2000-01-09

I read this book recommended to me by a friend and it immediately captured my attention. Its fascinating plot and eloquent language takes you on an adventure to France in that time. I even had a nightmare once while in the process of reading the book. Despite that, it is a mysterious and weird work of literature, which you will never be able to really understand. Thumbs up!

5 out of 5 stars The most fascinating book!.......1999-06-18

I have read this book three times and still remains my favorite of all times. It is a fascinating trip to the depths of the human mind. Captivating from the very first page will change your perception of others forever.

                Book Description

This book is a font of information for readers interested in the mathematical past and present of Berlin. It presents a comprehensive, condensed overview of mathematical activity in Berlin, beginning with the foundation of the Academy by Leibniz and carrying over almost to the present day. Many towering figures in mathematical history worked in Berlin, and thus most of the chapters of this book are essentially concise biographies of these luminaries.

The presentations are held together and complemented by a few articles examining the overall development of entire periods of scientific life at Berlin. The chapters cover the foundation of the University of Berlin, the "Golden Age" of mathematics (spanning the second half of the 19th century), the Nazi period, the development of mathematics in East and West Berlin during the political division of the city, and the merging of the formerly separated mathematical communities with the reunification of Germany.

American artist Kiki Smith first received international attention in the 1980s with her sculptures and drawings of the human body. Since the beginning of the 1990s, however, she has expanded her visual vocabulary to include works that portray the larger natural world and its phenomena, such as plants and animals, stars and planets. The daughter of minimalist artist Tony Smith, she has drawn a good deal of her inspiration from the techniques and materials of past epochs, especially from traditions within the decorative arts-and-crafts movements of various world cultures. She uses a wide variety of lush and often ephemeral materials to create her pieces--bronze, gold, silver, paper, wax, glass, felt, ceramics, video, and neon among them. And she combines figuration and abstraction to explore such themes as the vulnerability and reanimation of that which is lost or dead. Smith's pieces, which draw on fables, myths, fairy tales, dreams, and her own Catholic spirituality, evoke in viewers contemplation and a desire for greater perception. Kiki Smith: All Creatures Great and Small brings together works from different periods of Smith's production over the past two decades. At 140 pages, this small, elegant hardcover (approximately eight by six inches) includes 54 color reproductions and a poetic text by Carsten Ahrens. --A.C. Smith

                5 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful.......2000-12-05

Kiki Smith's work may seem impossible to document in book form but this book does a terrific job of conveying the power and delicacy of her art. The reproductions are gorgeous, and the essay is extremely readable. A must for any contemporary art book collection!

4 out of 5 stars probably not on the bookstore shelf, but it should be.......2000-02-19

This hardback is small for an art book (measures 6 in. wide by 8 in. long), but it is packed with full-color plates of Smith's work. The book seems to have been published in connection with an exhibition at the Kestner Gesellschaft in Germany. The plates include details and installation shots from what appears to have been a large and fairly comprehensive one-person show.

Smith's work is elegant and direct, wide-ranging in subject but closely related in meaning. In his essay, Carsten Ahrens states "Kiki Smith has ....continually hinted at the close proximity between art and the ideas of Catholicism, which are similar in their belief in the spiritual potential of the physical." Though I found most of the essay difficult to digest, I consider that statement a gem. To me, Smith's art is about the frail, feeling, physical world and the force of life itself.

The back of the book features a selection of Smith's iris prints. I was delighted to discover these, as I was unaware that Smith does work in photography. I think they are quite nice, and I am impressed that she is able to work in such a range of mediums.

Though I do not consider the book a substitute for a monograph, it is an excellent resource. One star deducted for photo quality--well-composed but occasionally fuzzy.

5 out of 5 stars Kiki Smith is the Neil Young of the art world.......1999-11-01

Prolific and out on her own sense of self Kiki Smith is jaunting into areas both powerful and perplexing. She's not who you think she is.
