4 out of 5 stars Good Variety of Information for the Experienced Dog Owner.......2002-06-26

Contains information on various kennels in the US, and abroad. Has a small chapter on grooming for show, but is definitely geared towards someone who knows what they are doing. Beautiful photos of past champions, as well as good illustrations and photos to help you find a correct conformationed show dog. Highlights Gordons both as Show and Field Dogs. Nice coffee table book.

5 out of 5 stars Very helpful book,Highlights the breed perfectly........1998-11-20

Jose has the knowledge of the breed and has very kindly passed it on to us in this very useful book. The information is priceless to those of us who are relatively new to the breed. I know it has helped me on many occasions. It takes pride of place on my book shelf.

      Book Description

Collectors around the world have enjoyed the animals figurines created by Royal Doulton for over a century. The 3rd edition of The charlton Standard Catalogue of Royal

Doulton Animals has been updated to include the new models introduced over the past few years, and to reflect the current market value of all Doulton animal figurines.

The three new series added to the 3rd edition are: The Charles Noke Collection, a tribute to Noke, whose classic model of a Polar Bear Monter and Her Cub was remodelled in 2001, by Robert Tabbenor, and issued in a limited edition of 200; the second series, modelled by Alan Maslankowski, Art is Life, contains beautifully sculpted animals such as wolves, bears, and horses; the third series, Burslem Artwares, contains the majestic flambé T'ang Horse and several other flambé pieces.

What appears to be the most buoyant niche in the Animal market today is the stoneware models of mice and frogs created by George Tinworth. The prices realized of these classic sculptures seem to escalate continuously when they appear at auction. There are well over 60 models created by

      George Tinworth.

Each listing provides the model number, size, colour, designer, dates of issue and discontinuation, and the different glaze varieties that can be found on certain models. More than 1,200 illustrations on more than 475 pages results in a catalogue that covers the complete range of Royal Doulton Animals.

      Book Description

The eighth edition of Storybook Figurines, A "Charlton Standard Catalogue," is completely updated with recent releases and current market values. Royal Doulton, Royal Albert, and Beswick storybook figurines are illustrated and their technical data listed.

Thirty-two colour plates are disbursed throughout the book in eight page sections. The first two sections, or 16 pages, are devoted to the figures of Beatrix Potter. Almost all `BP' figures, along with their varieties (177 individual images) are illustrated to assist in identifying the different characters in your collection. The third 8-page colour section, is devoted to Jill Barklem's Brambly Hedge storybook figures, 68 individual images, which may be used by the collector to assist in building a meaningful collection. The final eight page colour section covers the Royal Doulton issues of the Winnie the Pooh collection, 69 figures are illustrated in this group.

The main body of the catalogue, which includes the black and white images, the technical data, and prices, has been reviewed and updated to bring it current to 2005. Eight new releases were added to the Brambly Hedge chapter, while nine were added to the Winnie the Pooh section. Millennium Collectables added three new releases to their popular line of 20th Century Advertising Collectables.

The fast moving collectable market, brought on by the on-line auctions, is instrumental in the Storybook catalogue now being published on an annual basis. Price movements now dictate that if collectors wish to be current, they must have a current program.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Garden Therapy.......2001-05-15

GROWING WITH GARDENING is an excellent book to use when working with a group for garden/horticulture therapy. I am an Activity Director in a nursing home and have found this book full of ideas and guidance with what types of plants to plant, how to use them in programs including crafts, when to plant, how to prune and propagate, as well as other projects related to gardening. The book has step by step instructions to build a wheelchair accessible planter and to make a simple flower press. There are lists of supplies related to budget and ways to adapt the program to various ages and abilities. I have found this book has provided me with a wealth of new ideas to expand my residents gardening experiences.

If I was stranded in Northern Ontario with no hope of return, what would i do? Pray for a copy of Up North!!

This is a purely entertaining, and fact filled rendition of Ontario's wildlife.

There is only one fault in the whole book, some species were left out, ones that are very common in ontario, but that is zilch compared to the great format and organization of the book!

This books information is zany and humorous, but actually educational, and interesting.

Winner of Britain's Silver Dagger and Canada's Arthur Ellis awards, shortlisted for Bouchercon's Hammett, Anthony, and Macavity prizes, Giles Blunt returns with this third intensely disturbing crime novel.

When a beautiful young woman stumbles into a rough Algonquin Bay tavern covered in black fly bites, bits of leaves stuck in her curly red hair, the bartender knows she is either dumb or high. No one in Algonquin Bay goes out unprotected in black fly season.

"Red," as the local cops come to call her, is neither, but it takes a full examination to discover that her woozy behavior isn't due to drugs or diminished mental capacity. Red has a bullet in her brain. And no memory of how it got there or who she is.

If homicide detectives John Cardinal and Lisa Delorme haven't a clue to her identity, they do know she is in mortal danger. Someone tried to kill her. Someone thought she was dead. Someone will try again if word leaks out she is not.

5 out of 5 stars I've Got to Go with Gary Griffith's Review.......2007-01-05

                Read GG's review first.

Black Fly Season was also my first introduction to the author. I agree with Gary in all respects. I would add that the emotional portraits of both the manic-despressed wife of one of the protagonist, and the drug addicted brother of one of the main characters are spot on. These passages resonate with authenticity, especially the section on how addicts kid themselves continuously that they will quit "next Monday."

I also enjoyed the healthy dose of entymology and near-voodoo religion. Blunt was very factual yet entertaining in introducing these themes and they added greatly to the book.

One of the other reviewers downplayed Blunt in comparison to Steve Hamilton's Alex McKnight series placed in the UP of Michigan. Those were nice, but there is far more characterization and plotting in this book than in either of the first two by Hamilton.

I am getting my hands on everything Blunt has written with high hopes they're all as good as Black Fly Season.

                4 out of 5 stars Murder, eh?.......2006-08-26

I enjoyed this novel. This is my 2nd Giles Blunt novel, the first being Delicate Storm. I liked this one better. For one thing, it seemed somewhat more plausible. It was certainly gripping. There were enough strange but plausible twists, oddball characters, and unexpected developments to keep me going, wondering what would happen next.

There are several specific things I like about this, or perhaps Blunt's writing in general. First, and perhaps most important for me, is the sense of place. The locations, the dialogue, and the characters, all come across as very authentic. Even some of the screwier characters that appear in passing are sketched very nicely. Blunt is to northern Ontario as Mankell is to the Skane region in Sweden.

The characters, the action, and the dialogue generally seem very natural. As the plot unfolds, at each step the characters' actions and dialogue seem reasonable given the context. Things go right or wrong, people react, and move on. Even in the face of very complex or unpleasant situations, the characters seem low-key and their reactions fairly professional. I contrast this approach to writing with that in some other contemporary mystery series, where it seems like everything the lead characters do or say has to be over-the-top in order to sustain the reader's interest.

As some of the other reviews mentioned, there is a side-plot involving the medical condition of Cardinal's wife. Normally this sort of thing really turns me off. I really dislike mysteries that spend more time talking about the main characters' issues, whether alcoholism, illness, or a relationship, than they do about the main plot. I am thinking in particular here of some of the Rebus novels, which in a few cases became more about Rebus and his personal demons than about solving a mystery. Fortunately, Blunt keeps the elements involving the wife's condition in check, and the related passages are brief enough that they are not an annoying and melodramatic distraction in the way that such digressions often are.

4 out of 5 stars A decent police procedural set in Canada.......2006-07-15

I bought this book based upon the review of Gary Griffiths who has a spotlight review on this book here. I think we are not supposed to refer to other reviews here, and I am not going to do so. I am going to refer to the reviewer though because I think he does a fine job and I admire his reiews a lot. Gary writes honest, insightful reviews and if he thinks a book is great then there is a fair-to-middlin' chance I am going to think it is great too. We don't always agree though and this book is one of those instances.

I thought this was a good book but not a great book. All the pieces were there. Interesting, sympathetic characters, with interesting human-scale problems of their own, a puzzling crime, interesting forensics, clever/weird bad guys, and a great setting that is unusual: the north of Canada. Somehow though, somehow....when I finished this book my honest summation is that this is good, really good actually, but it doesn't quite reach that memorable plateau which defines a novel as "great". Perhaps I should have started at the beginning of the series and worked forward for a better appreciation of the characters and their devleopment because as it stands I don't think this book and the characters will be that memorable to me. If I was going to make a recommendation for a "northern" mystery series I would recommend the Alex McKnight series by Steve Hamilton first. In my mind that is a truly great series.

So my opinion is this is a solid, good mystery that won't disappoint you at all. You'll enjoy reading it and won't regret the investment of time and money. Yet for a truly great series of reads, in a similar setting and environment, check out the McKnight series by Hamilton. It's first-class, memorable stuff that is wonderful enough to make you anxiously await the annual next installment year after year.

I loved Blunt's first book and was extremely happy to note that this second one is even better. He paints a brooding, uncomfortable picture of a Canadian town, but contrast the gruesome storyline with very human and at times gentle lead characters.

Perhaps starting in the middle of a series has lessened the impact, but I found this to be just average. I'll have to go and look for the beginning.

Callan's a great storyteller, but this is not just a storybook. He's a great guide, but this is not just a guidebook. Callan beautifully combines the two worlds in BT&BF to lend the reader a guidebook with stories that whet the appetite for an Algonquin trip. Callan gives the reader several options for weekend or week-long trips in the park and spices the descriptions up with his great storytelling ability. The only drawback is the lack of an index where one could compare trip length, difficulty, etc. in a table format instead of having to leaf back and forth through the book, but don't let that dissuade you. This is an excellent resource for the Algonquin canoeist.

The last word was every bit as incredible as the first...WOW! That Brookie on the cover would hit the spot right now... I'm pretty hungry... unfortunately it's only an image printed on paper... not very satisfying or tasty for that matter. The main thing you need to know about this book is that it's ultimately just a bunch of words on paper; like most other books. And hidden beneath this thin veil of "outdoor writing" is really just a silly lesson in Yin and Yang philosophy, as the words of the book depend upon and are largely defined by the Old Growth Forest paper that they are printed upon. And vice versa. Whatever. Spend some money. Check it out. You might be disappointed... then again, you just might not. Besides, everyone needs an extra book or two to fill those annoying gaps that appear in your bookcases when somebody pulls out another book to read, or to slap a fly with, or to use as a temporary, mobile writing platform. Happy reading!

                        Book Description

In the sequel to Northern Winters Are Murder, it's now high summer in Northern Ontario, where everyone is bear bait, even the bears. Then, on her remote lakeside road the savage and unexplainable murder of an elderly neighbor puts her on guard against two-footed killers. Belle's investigations gradually uncover the sordid details of a sexual abuse scandal in a residential school years before that has left scars on its victim that can never heal. The horrifying truth and its deadly fallout may destroy many more lives before this tragedy reaches its last act.

5 out of 5 stars Lou Allin's mysteries move up another notch!.......2003-07-12

In this second Belle Palmer mystery, our favorite Sudbury, Ontario real estate agent gets involved not only with crimes against persons but crimes against nature as well. The action and plot criss-cross through the pristine forest of wild berries, wild flowers, and wild bears to the glacial lakes of her resort-like neighborhood just waking up for summer. Also present is the tic-tac-toe board of events that include the illegal trade in animal parts to meet the burgening demand for Chinese medicine in the large cities and the shameful abuse of Inian children in the outer villages Christian schools of the 1960's. The unfolding of these political and emotional crimes are all the result of the murder of Belle's crusading neighbor. Secrets from the past are brought to light with her discovery of a street person who turns out to be her ploice chum's brother. I love all the diverse characters in the book, but the one who stands out in my mind is the inscrutable Sister Veronica. She is distrustful but heroic, suspicious but wise all rolled into one. And I feel that it is Sister Veronica who delivers the most telling line in the story at the very end. This is another interesting, descriptive, patchwork-clever read by Lou Allin.

5 out of 5 stars A book to be savored, rather than rushed through.......2002-11-05

Lou Allin originally hails from Toronto; but grew up in Ohio and earned a Ph.D. in English Renaissance Literature before moving back to Sudbury, Ontario to teach at Cambrian College. Blackflies are Murder is her second Belle Palmer mystery

Belle Palmer is a real estate agent living in the north, where it is easy to trip over bears; bait; hunters; and unmerciful Ontario winters. Belle's primary occupations besides her business is looking after her aging father and taking long walks to commune with nature. Belle's love of nature is shared by her friend Anni, a reclusive retiree who suddenly turns up dead in her home. Newcomer Charles Sullivan, buys a property close to Belle's and who turns out to be delightful company and a good neighbor. But things are not what they seem on the surface, and Belle finds herself the disconcerted discoverer of dead bodies, including Charles. Is it murder, or is there another explanation? When Belle is almost run off the road and her new neighbor is almost poisoned, she is convinced that these events are not just accidents:

"Sorry, Charles. No time for niceties. Your line was busy. You haven't tasted that gift yet, have you? He pointed to the sizzling pan, the air rich with butter. 'Why? What's wrong? I was calling the weather line, or as they call it, da wedderline. That dialect tickles my ear.' She flopped into a chair, her breathing returning to normal, noting the chopped mushrooms still on the counter. 'Oh, nothing. Just gastric upset possible leading to convulsions. Probably survivable, health man like you. Jack O'Lanterns aren't as deadly as the infamous amanitas or the corts."

Lou Allin raises the bar on mystery writing. Her almost contemplative style is heavy on character development and local color. Her style is almost scholarly, so that the reader has to pause to fully appreciate the flavor of her metaphors. But it fits with the Canadian "slow down and take a look at what's around you" attitude. No rushing around in screeching cop cars for Ms. Allin, but she gets the point across just the same. Blackflies are Murder is a book to be savored, rather than rushed through. Ms. Allin is a nature connoisseur, with much to teach us.
