Book Description
"Prior to this contribution nearly everything known of the behavior of marine mammals came to us from their activities on land, the laboratory, or occasional surface sightings. As a group, these animals dive to feed, yet most aspects of their behavior while submerged remained a complete mystery. Due, in large part, to the collaborative efforts of behaviorists, physiologists, ecologists, and engineers, this volume makes a quantum step toward understanding the underwater behavior of air-breathing vertebrates." -James A. Estes, Fish and Wildlife Service/University of California, Santa Cruz The contributors to this volume have accomplished a breakthrough in our ability to collect data on ocean-dwelling mammals. In the first large-scale comparison of fur seals, or of any group of marine mammals, they have employed quantitative methods and a special instrument called a Time-Depth-Recorder to study the strategies used by females in six species of eared seals to rear and wean their young in different environments. They present detailed information on the aquatic life of seals, particularly of subpolar and tropical eared seals, and point to future measurements of physiology and ecology that could result from improved instrumentation. The book contains an introduction and a chapter on methodology by the editors, Roger Gentry and Gerald Kooyman. Other contributors are Daniel P. Costa, John P. Croxall, Jeremy H.M. David, Randall W. Davis, D. William Doidge, Michael E. Goebel, John R. Holt, Patricia Majluf, T. Seamus McCann, Robert W. Rand, M. Sanchez-Grinan, and Fritz Trillmich. Roger L. Gentry is a wildlife biologist at the National Marine Fisheries Service, National Marine Mammal Laboratory, in Seattle, Washington. Gerald L. Kooyman is a research physiologist at the Physiological Research Laboratory, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, in La Jolla, California.

Book Description
The Golden Age of passenger trains is relived in this massive collection of original railroad advertisements. The excitement of train travel comes to life in ads featuring scenic panoramas, well-dressed passengers lounging in dining cars and coaches, and the latest and largest of locomotives pulling streamlined cars. The author's personal collection takes readers from 1917 through the present, featuring famous American and Canadian trainsthe California Zephyr, the Broadway Limited, 20th Century Limited, the Empire Builder and many more.
- Features 224 full-color pages - Historical notes on famous passenger trains and railroads
Customer Reviews:
Time Travel.......2002-07-01
What a beautiful book! Hardcover and full of the most deliciuous information. Mr. Burness has compiled, from his own collection of original railroad advertising a real time travel to explain us in the words of the railroads themselves (and some related industries-even Lionel), the evolution, successes and problems of American rail industry. The ads are sorted in alphabetical order by company name. From the 20's and 30's going through that heroic period of WW II and the postwar years and coming to Amtrak, you will witness the introduction of dome cars, the new trains like the California Zephyr, new technical achivements and so on. Reading this book you will feel the fallen flags so alive that is difficult to realize that most of them disappeared 30 or 40 years ago.
And it is not only the trains. Reading these ads you will be back in time in the United States of yesterday. The problems, the people and their fashions, etc. You will really enjoy this book.
Railroading on the 20th Century Limited.......2002-01-27
An interesting book of over two hundred passenger train ads that appeared in mass-market magazines. Each one fills a page with an informative caption. None of them would have won any design awards, mostly they follow the predictable format of illustration, headline, text and small pictures and as these are train ads, the little route map.
However, within this predictable (and sucessful) format you will see some great artwork, page 17 shows a 1945 American Locomotives ad with a stunning painting of a railroad yard with five streamliners, pages 52-53 has two Leslie Ragan paintings for the Budd Company. The Shell ad on page 186 looks like it was straight out of something painted by Bruce McCall (it wasn't) and there are thirteen pages of great New York Central ads that all feature cut-away illustrations.
As well as great art don't forget the copy. I'm pleased to see included the New Haven RR's 'The Kid In Upper 4' one of the most famous ads of the war years, read it and appreciate copywriting at its creative best. I never knew what the term 'highball' meant until I read the copy in the Pennsylvania RR ad on page 169-169.
I would have given this book five stars but like so many pictorial books the publishers have not taken the presentation seriously enough. Here the none of the ads have a definable edge, they just float in the white space on each page, easily solved by running a very thin black line round the ads original size or better still use a grey vignette drop shadow behind them. The typography of the title, contents, index pages etc is very bland and unimaginative. There are five ads that run across spreads but they don't, each has a thick white margin either side of the middle of the book, doing this is as bad as not correcting typos.
If you like railroad advertisments have a look at 'All-American Ads 40's' by Jim Heimann, a massive 764 page book that has (in color) thirty five of them in the chapter on travel.
Advertising And Railroad Fans Will Want This Volume.......2001-11-21
This is a brand new, 2001 hardback 224 page library volume that will please every railroad and advertising fan. It features 224 pages with 212 outstanding color photos of train ads of every description. The photos look as good or better than the originals. This covers the period of 1920s through the 1950s. There is an emphasis on how the passengers in the postwar period enjoyed the delight of train travel. Plenlty of interesting text is provided. A delightful work.
Railroad Art and Print Advertising.......2001-09-26
This is a fascinating book for those interested in the transition era of railroading and the advertising that was created in this era. The book is a collection of nearly 200 classic print advertisment that appeared in magazines during the 1940's, 50's and 60's. The ads range from railroad specific ads, with extensive coverage of the Union Pacific, Pennsylvania, New York Central and Great Northern railroads. Most other major railroads are represented with some pages in the book. In addition to railraod specific ads, this book has lots of ads from the manaufacturers of railroad equipmemt, including EMD and Pullman, along with others.
If you are interested in railroad art, or are interested in the transition era of the railroads, this is a book for you. This book is a quality publication and the reproduction effort is quite good. This book is a welcome part of my library and covers a neglected area of railroad history.

Customer Reviews:
Container gardeners beware........2003-03-02
Several things turned me off about the book. First, it's seems very British for some reason. Second, it goes in to pages and pages and pages of assessing your situation, whether you are a blind gardener, "the importance of design", then gets into water gardens and water features, and raised beds. Suffice it to say that it didn't seem very geared toward the apartment owner with a 7x10 foot balcony!
It's not there isn't useful information in this book, but it's about plants in general, though. This is not totally geared toward the container gardener. I guess that's said in the subtitle: Creating gardens on patios, balconies, terraces, AND IN OTHER SMALL SPACES. About 85 pages into the book, about types of hanging baskets, window boxes and other containers. Then it gets into container design where you choose compatible plant partnerships. But even here there's a little trouble, because the illustrations show plants that are NOT IN CONTAINERS but in a garden setting. From there you get into soils, how to propagate the plants, how to control pests (suggests picking off caterpillars will do...ewwww!),
I needed more from this book. I needed a book on containers and tha plants that grow well in them. One that talked about a wide variety of plants, especially those that grow well in my zone. I could care less about the parts of a plant and stuff I had in biology. In the very back, where it talks about "lack of space makes this plant list no more than a suggestion." Well, if they hadn't filled it with [stuff] what was off-topic, there may well have been room to discuss more plants. The main problem with this book, in my opinion, is that it lacks focus.
Bottom line, I guess it depends on what you need out of this book. This book works well as a general plant care reference book, but if you need a book specifically on the special needs of plants in containers, I'd try another book. One that was more helpful to me, and one which I consider my own personal bible as far as container plants goes, is called Container Plants for Patios, Balconies, and Window Boxes by Halina Heitz, published by Barron's. I have plumbagos, and while there's no mention of them in the No-Garden Gardener, you'll find useful references to them there.
Black thumbs be gone!.......2000-04-25
This is probably not a book for more experienced gardeners... but luckily I'm not. The writing on the design aspect of the non-garden seems common sense (and it is), but the book is a real treasure for the beginning gardener and those of us who just have two left thumbs. This is because it includes basic guides on such diverse topics as: plant biology, planting (from rock gardens to hanging plants), caring for the plant, propagation and pest control. Guides to planting and plant maintenance include diagrams and step-by-step instruction for easy use. The book's best feature though is its lovely photography; the photos are intended to inspire the reader with ideas about the design of their no-garden garden.

This is really creative book. I love it and I bought it even though I do not have a garden. I simply love to look at it and imagine that maybe some day, if I will ever have a garden, a balcony or even a patch of grass, this is how it will look.

Customer Reviews:
For large roofs mainly.......2006-02-23
Interesting, but mainly specialized to larger roof garden. Therefore less suitable for a relatively smaal balcony
Gorgeous, contained gardens - and more.......2000-05-14
This beautiful book is helpful in answering some design conundrums which comparable books do not tackle nearly as elegantly. (How to grow a lot of plants in a small space without creating a traffic jam -- for example.) There are photos of thrilling small garden spaces which - refreshingly - can actually be replicated fairly easily. It's a great book to drool over, but also a true reference; a good combination.
a pretty good book for general information........1999-11-10
the pictures in this book are amazing, although for the project i was working on, i found it lacking where it covered roofotp gardening. it seemed to be too general to give very accurate information for what i needed.

Nice, inexpensive and appropriate.......2006-02-23
The book, written by an elderly lady, is quite to the point and gives very practical advices. The photographs are not too glossy but give a good inpression what roof gardening is all about.
Four stars for text, two stars for photos............2006-01-22
BALCONY, TERRACE AND PATIO GARDENING is a friendly little book filled with observations about the "change" in life, when one must, alas, abandon the larger garden and cultivate an appreciation of horticulture on a much smaller scale. Although Margaret Davis is writing from the perspective of one who has had much experience in larger areas and her target audience is the retired individual like herself who faces this prospect of downsizing, her discovery of the positive aspects of working in a reduced space such as a balcony or townhouse lot are relevant to younger folks who find themselves in similar circumstances with desire to grow favorite plants they knew as children.
Ms Davis understands that some of the most difficult aspects of balcony gardening will probably be wind control, equipment storage, and perhaps, if you are located within the 10 feet or so near the ground, pests. However, if you are fortunate enough to have some sunlight you can grow a variety of sun-lovers such as roses and various herbs. Bougainvilla might work if the climate is warm enough and Camillas will thrive in shade. Hanging baskets are a must, and vegetables are not outside the realm of possibility. Ms Davis is thrilled with citrus trees, but I have only managed to kill them. She also says walls have great potential for trellises that can act as plant supports.
The downside of this book is that it is not well illustrated. The text is dotted with very small black and white photos, and the publishers included a small section of color plates in the center of the book, but other than cryptic notes such as "window view" "Chrysanthemum bonsai in Tokyo" the pictures are not terribly well captioned. Some of them are beautiful, like the photo of the fuchia growing on a patio table. The best shot was placed on the cover and shows an actual composition. Buy this book for Ms Davis narrative which is friendly and unassuming.

Not everyone has the extra space for a full-sized garden, but that doesn't mean the quiet joys of working with the soil and nurturing plants are out of reach. Colorful Containers is precisely the book for anyone, beginners and experts alike, seeking to add a natural touch to a confined space such as a patio or terrace. The authors write, "It is amazing how you can conjure up different and very individual atmospheres by using simple materials and carefully selected plants ... even a small balcony can offer a link with the colorful world of plants." The book wisely offers separate chapters focusing on the different levels of light a container gardener might have available, with helpful hints on selecting plants that thrive in full or partial sun, and even complete shade. Additional sections offer advice on choosing between the many different types of containers, how to arrange plants creatively in various settings, and what's required to keep container gardens looking attractive throughout all four seasons. The detailed text is supported by hundreds of color photos, providing a surprisingly abundant yield of information on this relatively small subject. --George Laney
