5 out of 5 stars Best Beginner's Book on Finches.......2003-08-28

Pay no attention to the bad review below, that is the viewpoint of someone prejdice to the carduelan finches which is basically for advanced finch hobbiests, breeders, and aviculturists. That review shows little interest in being helpful to new or prospective finch owners. Christa Koepff has written without a doubt, THE most helpful book on finch care for begginers. Easy to read, reference, and understand. I own and moderate FinchFriends, one of the best and most popular Finch groups on Yahoo! I very highly recommend this book to all my members.

4 out of 5 stars Good Overview of Exotic Finches.......2002-02-11

There is great info for beginners here, including info on the care and breeding of exotic finches. However, there is not too much specific info on specific breeds.

1 out of 5 stars The New Finch Handbook.......2001-12-13

This book should be re-named as "The Non-Singing Finches Handbook" because that is exactly what it is. It is a book for new Beginners, not for the advanced beginner, intermediate or expert breeder, because the content is superficial and out dated. Nothing is mentioned of singing birds such as the northern cardinal, rose breasted grosbeak, indigo bunting, siskins, goldfinches, linnets, etc. Instead you will find that the book has information on exotic finches such as firefinches, gouldians, gordon bleus, munias, grassfinches, javafinches, all those non singing birds that I do not keep and never will keep. Do not be misled by reviews that suggest this is a book for experts. It is far from the truth. I would not even buy this book if I am a new beginner, a much better deal is the Finches & softbilled birds by Henry bates and Robert Busenbark, and I also bought the Finches and Sparrows by Peter Clement (plse see my review on this book on Amazon).

4 out of 5 stars Good Finch Book.......2000-04-15

This is a very good book, expecially for beginners. Lots of good basic information on the care an breeding of finches. Good species descriptions. However, my copy had many blank pages, and I did not get to read about some species, such as the Zebra Finch.

    5 out of 5 stars A wonderful finch book........2000-03-02

I love this book! I found this book to be extremely helpful. I reccomend this book to finch lovers everywhere!

      Book Description

Energizing, Inspiring, Edible, and Exciting: That’s what bestselling author Katherine Whiteside says gardening ought to be. Whether you have a half acre of land in the country or a tiny patch of grass in the city, whether you’re an experienced digger or you’ve never held a trowel, Whiteside offers forty-one versatile projects that will make anyone into a proud gardener.

In The Way We Garden Now, Whiteside, known as House Beautiful’s Garden Goddess, tackles every aspect of creating beautiful and personal gardens, from making a new bed to adding decorative details. Always down-to-earth, Whiteside believes that “fretting over having a perfect garden is not fun, but getting out there and accomplishing basic garden goals will always leave you happily fulfilled.” To that end, she shows how to create the garden that’s just right for you by mixing and matching projects according to your skill level, space limitations, climate, and even how much time you have. The Way We Garden Now is graced with whimsical watercolors, fun sidebars, and Whiteside’s expert tips. In five accessible sections, she teaches you how to:

-Get going with ten easy, manageable projects that will turn your yard into a garden while helping you master basic garden chores
-Surmount design dilemmas with solutions such
      as hedges, paths, and patios
      -Organize ornamentals—from containers to a
      cutting garden
-Add edibles: Start a small salad garden that can evolve into an organic herb and vegetable potager
-Be a gardener for all seasons with summer bulbs, winter gardens, spring shows, and more...

With all the information about the supplies you’ll need, preparations to make, and even a helpful rating of how big an undertaking each project is, this is an indispensable book from a wise and witty mentor—a gardener who has been there and tried that.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for a new gardener...or an old one!.......2007-09-02

I am a longtime gardener. I bought this for my sister, a budding gardener, but read it myself first. It was fun, informative, easy read and I gleaned a few ideas for my own new gardens--I just moved to a new home that has no beds.

      5 out of 5 stars great ideas.......2007-07-02

Nice book. Friendly and relaxed writing style. Great ideas for your garden. I particularly like her recommendations for how to get your landscaping designed on your own without hiring a professional. Very practical ideas. I recently loaned this book to some friends with an ugly, wasted back yard. They had been stuck for years because they couldn't afford a landscape designer and they just didn't know what to do with their yard. Two weeks later I was at their house and they were on their way implementing ideas from this book. Now they are "unstuck" and working on beautifying their yard.

      5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book!!!.......2007-05-15

I loved this book! I read it in a weekend (very easy read) and will be reading tid bits of it throughout the year. It has great tips to be used throughout the entire year - for every season! The book shows you how to start beds from scratch, plant flowers, bulbs, gardens, how to make and use compost, container gardens, gardening journals, etc. Loads of information that can really come in handy. If you want a book full of lovely full page photos... this isn't the book for you. This is a very useable do it yourself book chuck full of information. The book has no photos but has beautifully drawn illustrations. This one's a keeper!!

5 out of 5 stars Finally! A gardening book I can really use!.......2007-02-15

I am so thrilled to receive Katherine Whiteside's new book! This book is a great way to gear up to start a new project, and it will see you right through the whole process. It makes sense of gardening in all forms and gives you information you really can use.
This book is as pretty as it is useful and informative! I'd give it 10 stars!!

"A garden that lacks privacy fails as a living space," writes Hazel White, author of this do-it-yourself guide to small patios. Managing editor of the Sunset Western Garden Book, White knows how to turn a swath of untamed land into an outdoor room, and most importantly, she knows how to teach readers to do it. Those who feel daunted by the prospect of bringing in tile or slate and building a floor themselves will feel encouraged after perusing this volume. There's a wide variety of patio "recipes" to choose from here: granite chips in a grass square, an outdoor dining room protected by a rose bower, a lush pondside terrace. In the opening pages White covers essential topics such as drainage, placement, size, and materials. She also muses on the function of the patio in daily life: "you can read the headlines of the morning newspaper in the fresh air while you also read the clouds and the prospect of warmth or rain." Small Patios will appeal to do-it-yourself types who want to pour concrete and move gravel; it will also appeal to dreamers who are thinking of building a patio someday, and simply want to know how it's done. --Emily White

Each project is illustrated with color photographs and includes easy-to-follow step-by-step directions. 3 out of 5 stars Light on the visuals, heavy on text.......2001-05-11

I was curious about what kind of garden publications Chronicle Books would be putting out so I bought three in the series; Water Gardens, Paths and Walkways, and Small Patios. I think if I had seen these in the bookstore I would've probably put them back. I was expecting something a little heavier on the visuals from Chronicle Books.

But the examples are interesting. Nice range of elements, and tending to favor the quirky in design. The author describes the garden element in question (depends on which book you have) and uses one overall photograph and two detail shots. The detail shots seem there mostly for atmosphere and to break up the page. She also includes a one-page, how-to discussion, and a list of tools and materials.

I'm not looking forward to all the reading.

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Complete info about a wide range of small garden projects.......2003-03-16

This cleverly designed book provides a short description of each project (sometimes including a tidbit about the idea's pedigree), a full page (i.e., about 6.5" x 11") color photo, and a double page of thorough instructions with detailed drawings. Measurements are given in both English and metric systems. A few pages about tools and specific techniques are included at the end of the book.

I'm happy to have this book and expect to get good use from it, so why not five stars?

First, and this is important if like me you expect the cover of the book to provide a fair look at what is inside, the book does not include instructions for the obelisks that adorn the herb garden on the cover. There are, however, instructions for the low fence. But I _really_ wanted a plan for the obelisk and, although one project is for something with this name, it is not nearly as elegant as what is pictured on the cover.

Second, at least one of the projects (a wall cascade) probably requires professional-level masonry, unless you're keen to have this wall come tumbling down on top of you. I reasonably expected that someone of average handy experience would be able to tackle all this projects; this is one that I know I had better give a miss. It was a disappointment not to have other water feature ideas covered.

Finally, several of the projects for decorated containers are just about too easy for words; it surprised me that these are included as actual projects. In a similar vein, some of the projects are quite simple planting ideas (growing a rose through a tree, herb topiary, a knot garden). But the book's suggestions about plantings do not include information about hardiness. Watch out!

Still, there is much here to use and enjoy: a scented arbor, a chamomile seat, a raised window box, and much more. There is little advice about how to integrate any of these projects into a larger design, but if you have figured out the design you want, here are some plans to implement.

There is nothing as important to a garden as its trees; they provide canopy, shade, setting, scale, privacy, and winter "bones." However, there is also nothing easier with which to make a big mistake, as trees invariably grow faster and larger than a gardener expects--a wrong choice can be expensive and even destructive. Far too many views are blocked, sewer lines or sidewalks torn up, and gardens made gloomy and rooty by the wrong tree in the wrong place.

Author Hazel White helps out by selecting the best trees for small gardens and clearly explaining how and where to plant them. Most of us with urban or suburban gardens need to grow these more modestly sized trees. But never think that small means modest, as illustrated by Matthew Plut's photos of truly glorious trees. Eddie's White Wonder dogwood is lush with pure white, open blossoms; Harlequin glorybower (Clerodendrum trichotomum) is small, easy to grow, and lights up the autumn garden with starry fruits in a nearly unbelievable color combo of magenta and iridescent turquoise. Its leaves smell of peanut butter, too.

For each tree recommended, White gives hardiness and cultural information, a thorough description, suggestions for companion plantings, and detailed pruning instructions. Best of all, a color photo shows how to use the tree in the garden; these photos aren't just plant portraits, but design inspirations. All the ways in which trees can enrich a garden are explored: as groves, centerpieces, allées; in pots; to accent an entrance; even as a miniature, fruiting hedge (dwarf apples). Rarely is both inspiration and practicality so beautifully combined as in this stunning book, which will make you glad you garden on a property just the right size for smaller trees. --Valerie Easton

            Book Description

No garden is too small for a tree, and many are large enough to accommodate an orchard or allée of small trees. Small-Tree Gardens, the latest book in our Garden Design series, presents a variety of garden projects featuring smaller trees—from a silvery six-foot birch to a fragrant pine-apple guava tree. Hazel White explains how designers use trees in the garden to create focal points, walls and ceilings, corridors, screens, and frames. Each of the 25 projects is illustrated with color photographs and includes step-by-step directions. With detailed information on everything from soil preparation to pruning, whitewashing trunks to topiary sculpting, Small-Tree Gardens is an indispensable guide and inspiration for novice and practiced gardeners alike.
