Not so informative.......2006-03-07
This book didn't have nearly enough information. I still have tons of questions about my goldfish. It is especially lacking in information on goldfish illness.

For years, collectors have relied on marks as a way to authenticate and date genuine antiques and collectibles. But with the flood of fakes and reproductions, determining which piece is genuine and which is not can mean the difference between a rare find and a costly mistake.
This new book, organized by category and then by manufacturer, shows more than 1,000 faked, forged, and confusing marks side-by-side with the original marks so readers can easily distinguish forgeries from original, valuable items. Mark Chervenka is America's top expert on antique fakes and reproductions, offering priceless advice via television, radio, and other news outlets. He is also the author of the best-selling Antique Trader Guide to Fakes & Reproductions.

Good general book for an antiques dealer........2007-03-23
This is a good book for the serious antiques dealer or collector. This book contains clear pictures of the real and fake marks side by side (mostly in black and white) with some dates, and is split into categories according to type of antique.
Good.......2006-12-15
A very interesting book for introducing beginning appraisers to fake and forged marks. The illustrations are very helpful. Information is plentiful. I would have preferred it to be all in color, though.
Book Description
You may have seen them in some wonderful old movie, sparkling on Audrey Hepburn or Claudette Colbert, looking as if they cost millions of dollars. They didn’t; they are not the real thing. But even though they are faux, they’re made with the same care and attention as the real things: strands of artificial pearls individually knotted, “gems” hand set and pronged, plastic bangles more stunning than ivory.
Fabulous Fakes gives you one hundred years of the most amazing pieces of costume jewelry ever produced, in brilliant and beautiful color.
It tells their story, starting with mass-produced Victorian jewelry, moving through the wonderfully sophisticated lines of art deco geometrics, and parking at the doorstep of 1990s designer and artisanal jewelry.
Whether you love the boldness of Czech crystal or the delicate handiwork of Miriam Haskell, whether your jewels are part of your everyday fashion or a breathtaking collection of
objets, the thrill of finding them is the same.
Fabulous Fakes is your treasure map to discovering the craftsmanship and tradition that have made these pieces part of our collective memory.

A 'must' for any serious collecting library, especially those covering costume jewelry........2006-10-15
FABULOUS FAKES: A PASSION FOR VINTAGE COSTUME JEWELRY is much more than just another identification or pricing guide: it captures and shares the author's own enthusiasm for the history and background of costume jewelry, offering chapters spiced with numerous color photos. Her pieces accompany a running history of vintage costume jewelry from Victorian to modern times, offering excellent and vivid insights into show-stopping pieces. A 'must' for any serious collecting library, especially those covering costume jewelry.

One ofthe best antiques books I own!.......2003-11-23
After we moved into our house (and jad no furniture to speak of) I decided to take the time to buy antiques and find really cool "stuff". This became quite a fun adventure and boy have I learned a lot. This book was one ofthe first that I picked up because I was noticing so much reproduction furniture in the seemingly antiques stores. After awhile you can just look at something and see if its reproduction or not but this book really helped me in fguring that out - fron talking about different types of wood that were popular in different eras, to what to look for in joints/workmanship, to identifying original upholstry, and I could go on and on. This is just an incredible resource and the pictures/drawings that are throughout are fantastic. It's like sitting on the shoulder of an antiquing guru as you walk through a shop and they are able to go right to the key indicators to see if its original or not. The writing style os fun and easy to read too. Excellent book.
buy this first.......2003-04-04
Before you spend a lot of money on antique furniture buy this book and study it like a text book. This well written, well researched guide will save you from being made a fool of or cheated.
Worthwhile Basics.......2000-02-27
I worked hard to really read this book. It has been worth it, because it covers the basic story on how to examine a piece of furniture to determine whether or not it is really old, or even if it is old, whether or not the piece itself is original as seen today, or has been pieced together from several incomplete pieces of old furniture, or even other sources of old pieces of wood. It is fairly fascinating, but it is also a lot like studying. I seem to be coming into contact with antiques through inheritance, and while this book hasn't told me much about the source of the pieces I have, I at least now know enough to turn my furniture upside down, and inside out to find out just where it may have been before it came to me! You have to really look at the many photographs (not every one was perfectly clear no matter how hard I looked -- 1 out of 30 were unclear I estimate) while reading the narrative. And I had never realized the extent to which 18th and 19th century pieces are researched for provenence, including looking through very old advertisements in newspapers, etc., to find the names of furniture makers of the past. Quite technical, but worth the effort.
One of the Best Antique Furniture Guides........1999-12-02
I was given this book when I first became interested in antique furniture around 5 years ago. I am an antique dealer and avid collector now, and I still use it frequently as a reference. Although it focuses on 18th c. American furniture, the concepts apply to all periods and types.
This is a great book! I highly recommend it to all collectors.
A must have book for anyone who collects antique furniture!.......1999-10-18
Long overdue, this book provides the reader with the skills needed to correctly date American furniture. Numerous clear, closeup photos help the reader to understand exactly what to look for when examining antique furniture.
Book Description
Heavy demand has created an international market in fake Third Reich uniforms, equipment and decorations. In this unique volume, over 200 photographs display several hundred fakes side-by-side with the authentic originals. Both are described in meticulous detail, making for two reference books in one.
"...a handy and immensely informative reference ..." Military Trader, May 2005
Customer Reviews:
Detecting the fakes........2007-06-09
Great tool for collectors. After the book I found out I had at least one fake. Great help when look for other pieces for the collection. Pictures and diagrams and explations what to look for is a must.
An excellent starting point.......2001-06-06
Since there is no other book on the market which provides such essential basics to becoming a knowledgeable collector I rate this book very high. If you intend on getting into the fun of collecting Nazi era memorabilia this is the first book you should get your hands on. Don't buy anything until you read this book. Chances are if you take this book with you when your looking for Third Reich Militaria you will at least end up with an original and not a fake. Without this book it's buyer beware.
Not perfect but:.......2001-04-29
If you are going to collect 3rd Reich militaria this book is a must. The biggest drawback is the lack of short glossary explaining some of the terms and how to determine certain kinds of metal. For example: if an item is made out of "tombak" how do I differentiate that from zinc or aluminium. All photos in B&W, color would have been nice. All this aside this book seems to be the best book on the market on the subject.
Informative and Concise.......2000-08-02
This book is a very helpful guide for helping to separate the fake items from the real ones out there. The hundreds of pictures included in the book wonderfully illustrate the points made in the text. The "Miscellaneous Regalia" section could have been larger and more inclusive but what is included gives good examples of how far people will go to forge items, especially written documents. The book should be very helpful to anyone who purchases it and will be indespensible for the beginning collector.
Book Description
The landscape of American farming changed dramatically in
the century between 1850 and 1950. Horse-drawn mechanical
reapers replaced hand scythes used to harvest grain; later, the
mechanical reapers were replaced by steam engine-powered
threshing machines. Horses, originally used to pull the
powerful machinery, were replaced with tractors. Eventually,
all these systems became obsolete with the invention of
self-propelled combines.
These good old days of agriculture are represented in a wealth
of antiques from the period. Collectors of antique farm pieces
will love this fantastic reference, which documents popular
collectibles such as horse hardware, tools, farm implements,
kitchen items, advertising, seed catalogs, toys, and countless
print items including John Deere manuals, calendars and
magazines. Current pricing information for the collectibles
accompanies over 1,000 photographs! The book also devotes
an entire chapter to farm items from 1905.

A superb resource for the dedicated enthusiast.......2004-11-13
American Farm Collectibles: Identification And Price Guide is a catalog of classic mementos of the bygone era of American farm life, including tools, antique tractors, toys and sleds, kitchen utensils, gardening items, turn-of-the-century ads, and much more. Black-and-white photographs fill almost every page other than the 32 pages of color photos, and the text offers straightforward item descriptions, current prices, and advice for finding collectibles and antiques. A superb resource for the dedicated enthusiast, and fun just to page through for the memories and nostalgia.
Great information, but not nearly long enough........2004-07-11
I purchased this book when I became interested in antiques and found myself scrolling the pages of Ebay for treasures. The book is invaluable in pointing out many of the creative ways con artists have ingeniously come up with to defraud the unwary buyer. The biggest flaw of the book is that it is a survey book and hits only a few examples of fakes within a number of widely diverse catagories. I happen to be interested in porcelain and the information the book provided on the few specific areas of porcelain (like RS Prussia and Delft) were first-rate. Unfortunately vast areas of porcelain like figurines in general or companies like Meissen were never even mentioned. This is understandable as the book also covers broadly furniture, bronze, scrimshaw and cast iron lawn and garden items. I would love an expanded series with books specializing in each of the areas listed. As an overview this points out areas of fraud to be on the lookout for. As a specific, unless you happen to be evaluating the exact same item, it is unlikely to be helpful in any one particular fraud question.
Best Book on Fakes and Reproductions.......2001-06-17
If you are a serious collector or a dealer this is a must have book! Covers all of the major catagories.
Up-To-Date Essential Guide for Antique Collectors !!.......2001-04-13
This brand new year 2001 super guide can protect collectors from paying good money for fakes and reproductions. The book's 304 pages covers Art glass, Cameo Glass, Depression Glass, China, Porcelain, Scientific Instruments, Art Pottery, Black Memorabilia, Bronze, Furniture, Computer-related, Lamp and, Lighting, Napkin Rings, Silver items, and Toys. There are more than 1,000 great black and white, and a 16-page full color section to help you identify reproductions. The book's 6 x 9" is a handy size to take with you while antiquing. The book can save you far more than its price by protecting you from purchasing only one reproduction. Add it to your library.
Book Makes Detecting Fakes Easy!.......2001-04-01
Mark Chervenka, editor of the monthly "Antique & Collectors Reproduction News" and noted authority on fakes and reproductions in the collectible and antiques world, has compiled a 304-page compendium that surpasses our previous experts, Dorothy Hammond and Ruth Webb Lee. Mr. Chervenka makes detecting much easier as he loads his book with hundreds of photos displaying the old next to the new. The reader has only to study and to compare and contrast the entries in this book to develop a comfortable understanding of what to look for in detecting the mass of reproductions and fakes encountered in today's antiques and collectibles market. There's just one thing wrong with the book: it's about 50 years overdue!!

Book Description
When there have been opportunites for profit from deception, there have always been people ready to engage in sharp practice and ready to perpetuate fakes and frauds. These essays throw light on some of the more shadowy areas of book trade history, revealing tricksters, villains -- even murderers -- who have practiced deception in the written and printed word, from 12th century to very recent times. "Fakes & Frauds" includes chapters on: "The Forgery of Printed Documents" by Nicolas Barker, "Forged Handwriting" by Tom Davis, and "Paper Pirates" by Michael Harris. This book also covers aspects of all the great forgers -- Wise, Prokosch, Hofmann and others. Co-published with St. Paul's Bibliographies."
