Snakes: The Evolution of Mystery in Nature
ASIN: 0121785602 |
Book Description
Some 360 million years ago the ancestors of today's reptiles and amphibians emerged from the sea to take on the challenge of land. This successful venture climaxed in a spectacular 140-million-year domination of the Earth by the dinosaurs. Today there are more than 11,000 species of reptiles and amphibians living in all parts of the world. Their behavior and physiology are as complex as those of birds and mammals, and they are equally well-adapted to the astonishingly varied environments they inhabit. Only through a greater understanding of the fragile balance that exists between the species and their habitats will it be possible for us to ensure their survival. This Second Edition of
Reptiles and Amphibians is a magnificently illustrated book, with highly comprehensive and authoritative text, written by the world's leading herpetologists. The book has more than 200 superb color photographs and 100 original paintings, maps, and diagrams. It is an up-to-date and definitive volume that chronicles the life-histories of some of nature's most secretive yet remarkable creatures.
Customer Reviews:
A fine reference.......2001-06-27
I am not trained in zoology and approach this subject as a complete amateur and a beginner amateur at that. This book is lavishly illustrated with expert and precise drawings as well as breathtaking photography that is more than adequat in conveying the beauty and complexity of the book's subject matter.
The "Key Facts" corner of every chapter gives useful basic information, e.g. the biggest and smallest of snakes, lizards or whatever - and how many are endangered. One cutaway view of a rattlesnake's rattle is particularly fascinating, though it only leaves me asking for more internal anatomical views.
While the writing is generally good, it sometimes lapses into a specialist's jargon that leaves us amateurs scratching our heads. Even when words like "lamellae" and "setae" are explained, might it just suffice to call them "overlapping plates" and "projections" respectively when discussing how geckos can "stroll on the ceiling"? I found myself looking back to check on what term meant what. Also, rather than a photograph, a drawing of the gecko foot might be more revealing - and there the scientific terms could be introduced.
But this is a minor complaint. I have no regrets whatsover about purchasing this book. it is a brilliant and spectacular tribute to the animal world's great wonders.
A Great Book for anyone, from the ameteur to the expert.......2000-05-03
Encyclopedia of Reptiles and Amphibians, Second Edition gave exellent synopsi on many herpetofauna ranging from the common green tree frog, to the care New Caledonian geckos. This encyclopedia will be enjoyed by anyone who has a genuine interest in reptiles and amphibians.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for the koi keeper.......2007-05-26
This is one of the best books that I have found on Koi. Beautiful color
photographs abound in this informative book. If you have to have only one book on Koi-this is the one. Lot of good advice on building a pond, what to do if there are problems such as illness, identifying fish pathogens and their treatment, different kinds of koi. I especially like the pictures of other people's ponds and landscaping-full of good ideas.
Good book-- but BE CAREFUL!.......2003-06-21
I lost half of my Koi in the space of 6 hours, because I was counting on this book, and it does not even mention the catastrophic disaster known as PH Crash. Unless you find out about that, and take preventative measures, this WILL happen to you!!
This book fails to describe water chemistry in sufficient detail, and these days it's pretty outdated. However, it does have a fantastic photo catalogue of koi varieties, and a decent overview of health problems, pond construction, and seasonal care. If you have fish, make sure to get multiple books in case one is missing important information.
This is the book.......2002-02-07
I have kept koi and bred them for around 5 years now. And when I pick up a koi book this always seems to be the first one I go to. As far as I'm concerned, if I had only one koi book this would be the one. If you're about to get into koi don't do it without the Tetra Encyclopedia of Koi.
All books should have such a high standard - kudos to tetra.......2000-09-20
Amazing. The only problem I had with this book is getting it out of my wife's hands. It covers EVERYTHING. Sections on Filtration, Pond design, Feeding (listing alternative foods that Koi enjoy), Anatomy (first rate), Selecting & showing your koi, a detail listing on the different patterns and scale formation and probably the best ( in my opinion) Parasites and Diseases, what they are, were they come from and how to destroy them.
This could be and should be renamed to "The koi instruction manual". If you are a koi breeders, I highly recommend this book, after reading it, I would wager that it would be THE book to recommend to your customers. The reason being that they would have less problems and get better enjoyment out of their hobby. It truly would be hard to go wrong with this book.
Wonderful & Enjoyable.......2000-01-26
This book is as easy to read as any grade school book and as indepth as books which I have read that cost 5 times as much. I have enjoyed reading it so much that the day after I was done reading it, I started reading it again. I own a nursery for watergardening plants, fish and supplies, and I highly recommend it.

In the most exquisitely photographed, informative, and comprehensive book yet published on the subject, author and herpetologist Chris Mattison provides details and descriptions of snakes rarely available to lay readers. Magnificent color photographs accompany a well-organized, readable text containing rare material culled from scientific journals and herpetology society publications from around the world. Encyclopedia of Snakes encompasses the complete array of snake shapes, patterns, sizes, and behaviorall presented with an evolutionary perspective fittingly applied to this mysterious species.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent information.......2005-12-05
I would use this book as one of the texts if I were teaching a herpetology course. It contains a comprehensive view of snakes' anatomy, sensory organs, and adaptations. If you're looking for a book that will give you an amazing amount of general snake knowledge, this is the book for you. For accounts of particular species, however, you will need to pick up additional material.
Fantastic.......2005-09-15
That was the word used when I asked my son-in-law how he liked his birthday present. He generally is not a reader but is very interested in snakes. He read the entire book and enjoyed it very much. He said he gained a lot of useful information.
encyclopedia of snakes.......2001-10-29
I am not reviewing this book just can find no where to write a review of the site. in the memory you use to put the larger photos on you could put the table of contents and samples in the book. i see no virtual review of the book, nothing about it, no number of pages, no table of contents nothing. so therefore i will not buy from this site. i dont buy what i cant see or have no clue what the contents of the book is. this book is only a book of snakes not sure if it contains what i want or not. all i have a title that is all. titles dont sale books unless one is looking for a specific title.
The Encyclopedia of Snakes.......2000-06-25
This is a great book. Instaed of the usual individual synopsis of each species, it has a more general approach. The sections on taxonomy and classification were especially useful to me.

Customer Reviews:
One of the best books on reptiles and amphibians.......2007-06-08
Ten stars, if possible!! No more words needed, this a superb encyclopedia for all ages. Excellent pictures, diagrams, charts and fascinating information. If I could only own one encyclopedia on reptiles and amphibians, this would be it. Also highly recommended is Firefly "Insects and Spiders" Both are definitely worth the price.
Wonderful Compilation.......2005-10-19
The Firefly Encyclopedia series are uniformly excellent. There are several current volumes (Reptiles & Amphibians, Insects & Spiders, and Birds). With luck additional volumes will be added (I'd be especially keen to see one on fishes). The series picks up the tradition started with the David Macdonald's "Encyclopedia of Mammals" by having numerous experts contribute information about the organisms they study. Thus, each species or group of organisms is described by the scientists who know them best. The result is a truly amazing compilation of information about each type of organism.
The Reptiles and Amphibians volume contains information from 38 separate contributors about all types of reptiles and amphibians. Contents include:
Amphibians, general information: 28 pages
Caecilians: 4 pages
Salamanders and Newts: 22 pages
Frogs and Toads: 34 pages
Reptiles, general information: 20 pages
Turtles and Tortoises: 10 pages
Lizards: 38 pages
Worm-lizards: 2 pages
Snakes: 32 pages
Tuatara: 2 pages
Crocodilians: 12 pages
The book is lavishly illustrated. There are tons of amazing photographs and lots of beautifully rendered drawings. The text is well written and generally easy to follow. Some sections are fairly technical (I have a Ph.D. in Biology and got lost a few times), but probably 90% or more should be accessible to anyone. I strongly recommend this book for biologists, naturalists, and people interested in wildlife. It would make an excellent gift for a young person (probably junior high +) who likes animals.
A herpetological classic.......2005-09-11
Tim Halliday and Kraig Adler deserve much praise for the blend of informative writing and hard science in their Encyclopedia of Reptiles and Amphibians which has been in print since the late 1980s.
The illustrations, drawn in many cases from photos, and the photographs which are liberally distributed through the text serve to assist the readers' understanding rather than just being pretty pictures plopped in to fill space.
Both Halliday and Adler are serious scientists and their rigorous devotion to fact shows on every page of this encyclopedia.
I recommend it for everyone interested in reptiles and amphibians. In fact, I recommend all three editions as each is slightly different and shows the progression of their efforts over time. The latest edition, from Firefly Press, has the most color photography and the most up-to-date information.

Customer Reviews:
Very Informative book.......2001-08-03
If you have any questions about any type of turtle or tortoise this book will answer them. Very informative. Worth the money.
Outstanding reference source for turtle keepers everywhere.......2000-12-14
I own many turtle books, but this one is truly outstanding and is in my "most used" category..... a cornucopia of practical information that is well-written, well-presented and well-researched. There is stuff here that you'd have to combe through an entire library to find otherwise. I commend this text to all keepers, from beginner to professional. It has been called the "bible of turtle keeping" for good reason - there is no better single volume source of accurate information available. The author is founder of the Tortoise Trust, one of the world's leading turtle conservation and education organizations, and is known for numerous contributions to our knowledge on this topic. Without doubt, this is the most useful, practical turtle book I own, and I urge other keepers not to pass it by! There are some awful books on turtles out there, and they can get your animal's killed... this one is quite the opposite, and it has certainly saved many of my own animals. Excellent.
Practical Encyclopedia of Keeping and Breeding Tortoises and.......2000-09-01
If you own a turtle or tortoise, buy this book and keep it handy. The Practical Encyclopedia of Keeping and Breeding Tortoises and Freshwater Turtles has information for everyone; yes, even for advanced keepers. This is not just another reptile book with lots of photos and little substance. It is a pet owner's manual that appeals to a wide audience. Beginners to turtlekeeping will find all they need to know (without being intimidated) about nutrition, housing, medicine and maintenance of all of the common (and some not-so-common) pet species. Highfield presents a great deal of information in a logical, readable manner. The book includes many color photographs which are helpful in species identification. The chapters on nutrition and medical care are outstanding. Many of the species presented in the book have photos to go along with the detailed descriptions of their habits, habitats and life-cycles. The Practical Encyclopedia of Keeping and Breeding Tortoises and Freshwater Turtles is loaded with information that is pertinent, concise and accurate. I highly recommend this book.

A both a potter and gardener, author Jim Keeling combines practical horticultural skills with a visual appreciation--not only of the plants but of the pots themselves.
Customer Reviews:
About clay pots and their contents.............2005-12-18
FLOWERPOTS `A seasonal guide to planting, designing and displaying pots' by potter and British author Jim Keeling discusses the many facets of pot design, production and use. Keeling includes text and photos describing the phases of pot production at his facility at Whichford, England 1) as the preparation of the various materials - local clay and clays from the Thames Valley and Staffordshire; 2) molding and shaping techniques using the potter's wheel and other pot formation techniques; 3) the eventual destinies of many kinds of pots from those used to hold small seedlings in greenhouses, to large clay pots suitable for a wonderful display of blooming apple trees, to works of art composed of clay pots of various sizes or assembled into garden sculpture or an arrangement of containers filled with colorful plants. The photography in Keeling's book is beautiful with many up-close shots as well as a few `ebullient' photos from displays at the annual Chelsea affair showing lovely and colorful flower arrangements sure to peak your interest and inspire you.
Keeling discusses the life of pots as containers relative to weather conditions, not only addressing adjustments to the swings in hot and cold temperatures associated with the seasons as we have traditionally known them, but picturing the gardeners life as she adjusts to effects of the of secular trend known as Global Warming. If you want to understand more about the possibilities of clay pots as containers and works of art, begin here.
Flowerpots.......2005-03-16
I liked this book. But there are better books if you are looking for a "how-to" for container gardening. Mr. Keeling rambles, from clay to pots to plants. Which is in order, but he just gets going on a subject and leaves it. A bit frustrating. When he stays on subject, very good. The pictures are very good, and give you the best guide for planting. This was an idea book for me. I learned quite a bit about the workings of a pottery. Interesting.
Good books for containers. "Contain Yourself" and "Euroamerican Container Garden Cookbook". Both by Kerstin P. Ouellet. Also, "Gardening in Containers" by the Editors of Fine Gardening Magazine.
Offers a seasonal approach to pots.......2004-07-09
Jim Keeling's Flowerpots isn't just another general guide to flowerpot planting: it offers a seasonal approach to pots, is seasonally arranged, and tells how to structure pots for all four seasons. Advice on pruning, feeding and container pros and cons is based on Jim Keeling's personal English-style cottage gardens and is illustrated with lovely color photos by Andrew Lawson.

Did God Have A Wife? Archaeology And Folk Religion In Ancient Israel
ASIN: 0521662354 |
Book Description
Judith Hadley deploys recent archaeological discoveries, alongside biblical material and nonbiblical inscriptions, to examine the evidence for the worship of Asherah as the partner of God in the Bible. She asks how Israelites construed the relationship between "Yahweh and his Asherah," and whether in fact the term referred to an object of worship rather than a female deity. This is a well-crafted study that promises to make a significant contribution to the debate about the exact nature of Asherah and her significance in pre-exilic Israel and Judah.

Book Description
This book is about the social history of the Arab Jews—Jews living in Arab countries—against the backdrop of Zionist nationalism. By using the term “Arab Jews” (rather than “Mizrahim,” which literally means “Orientals”) the book challenges the binary opposition between Arabs and Jews in Zionist discourse, a dichotomy that renders the linking of Arabs and Jews in this way inconceivable. It also situates the study of the relationships between Mizrahi Jews and Ashkenazi Jews in the context of early colonial encounters between the Arab Jews and the European Zionist emissaries—prior to the establishment of the state of Israel and outside Palestine. It argues that these relationships were reproduced upon the arrival of the Arab Jews to Israel. The book also provides a new prism for understanding the intricate relationships between the Arab Jews and the Palestinian refugees of 1948, a link that is usually obscured or omitted by studies that are informed by Zionist historiography. Finally, the book uses the history of the Arab Jews to transcend the assumptions necessitated by the Zionist perspective, and to open the door for a perspective that sheds new light on the basic assumptions upon which Zionism was founded.

Reprint of 1995 edition. The 7 contributions in this volume analyse the historical, social and religious identity in three distinct communities of Indian Jews: the Cochin Jews, the Bene Israel and the "Baghdadi" Jews. The authors address historical development, social interaction with Gentile neighbors, modernization and the influence of Zionism and the role of religion as a system of rituals and norms defining and celebrating the very identities of Indian Jews.

Jewish Carpets a History and Expaination.......2005-05-24
I have read and know this book since it's publication and in fact know the author well. The history associated with Jews and Carpets is facinating, considering that oriental rugs are usually considered for the most part the domaine and art form of Islam. During the golden age of carpets, Jews and Muslems worked together and advanced the artform in cooperation. This is a must read for any rug collector and in particular a historical guide for Jews interested in the subject. Mr Felton writes with a passion and gift that "weaves" history, culture and give the people involed a voice uniuqe in books about carpets and their origins.
To understand the Jews, walk a mile on their carpets........2002-07-25
I have been studying the world of rugs and carpets for 2 years. Reading about the tradition and place of rugs & rugweaving in the Islamic world goes a very long way to explain who Muslims are.
I never found an equivalent artform in the Jewish world--until I discovered this book.
The author describes the attributes and history of those rugs known to have been made by Jews & containing in-woven Jewish iconography. He delves into the Israeli Arts & Crafts movement, whose apotheosis was Boris Schatz and the Bezalel (pronounced beit-TSA-lel)factory-school of crafts.
I cannot overemphasize how fascinating the Anton Felton's book is. I have just ordered one of the carpets that he describes in his book--from an EBay dealer.
I have 2 copies of the book--one from Amazon, the other from the Textile museum of Toronto.
