For The Love of Goldens.......2002-12-04
I felt so honored when asked to provide my Golden story for this book, and when it arrived I let it sit for a few days. I was worried that some of the stories would be sad and open old wounds for me. One day I sat down and read it cover to cover and am a better person for doing so. Author Margo gently nudged each and every one of her authors to speak from their hearts in their own voices and each tale is utterly unique and beautiful. This book pays a fitting homage to the most loving and companionable breed of all time, the Golden Retriever. It is a wonderful testimony to what adopting a rescued Golden can do to enrich the lives of the adopter and adoptee.

A most Magnificant Book!!.......2002-12-03
My Golden Frosty's story in in Margo's book. I read it first when I bought it, I was so proud. Then I started reading each of the other wonderful stories and was feeling every emotion, from tears to happiness and whatever lies in between. Each and every story brought such emotion to me. There are so many out there who love Goldens so much they devote their lives to them. I am very proud to be included in this wonderful book and to have been owned by such a wonderful dog.

Rescuing Goldens - A Labor of Love.......2002-10-27
I bought this book before it was even released by the publisher. It is excellent! As a volunteer for my local golden retriever rescue group (GRREAT) I could relate to every story told. It made me want to be able to rescue every GR out there who needs a second chance at life. To give of yourself to save the life of a GR in need is like no other experience you can imagine. If you've ever been owned by a golden, thought about being owned by one, or are just plain interested in dogs, this book is a must. If you are thinking about being owned by a GR and read this book, you will see why you must contact your local rescue group. There a rescue groups all over the country (US).
I read it through the first time I opened it and quickly passed it along to my mom. Although she isn't owned by any dogs, I wanted my mom to get a look at why I volunteer for a rescue group and how my heart can go out to every golden in need that I hear about. Thanks to Margo for putting this wonderful collection together and thanks to all those whose stories are in this book or whose stories are just waiting to be told (hint for a sequel!). Your hearts are big and deserving of all the unconditional love these wonderful puppers give you.

Just bought my third golden retriever, and was STILL amazed at how much I enjoyed the absolutely beautiful photography in this book. My brother got it for my Father for Christmas, and I liked it so much I bought one for myself the next day. Amusing stories to read about different goldens, too, but I had not seen a golden retriever book with such a wonderful collection of pictures on almost every page before. Definitely a keeper!!

i think that if you like goldies and think they are so sweet, then buy this book!! it has stories about goldies, and it has the history of goldies, and such CUTE pictures. oh, by the way, i have a goldie myself, her name is "violet" she is the cutest, sweetest, smartest, most affectionate little doggy.

Well, as the title tells you, this book is a goldne book, and a golden's book. This was the first item that i bought from amazon.com and it is the reason why I contunie on buying things. Basicly, it is one of the best books I own.
For the first thing, it includes first quality golden retriever photos, very cute! You witness the miracles of goldens throughout this book.
HOWEVER!, this book DOES NOT include how to take care of your beatiful golden. You may need another book to guide you and help you with the topics of health, training and history of golden retrievers.
I can call this book a "reference" book, it is really valuable and a must-own for both poeple who own goldens and who don't. If you like photography and animals, and art-- this book is for you.

In FOR THE LOVE OF GOLDEN RETRIEVERS eminent dog writer, Robert Hutchinson, traces with unprecedented clarity the bright Golden strand that runs straight and true through the jumbled history of retrievers. Replete with 100 photographs from a prestigious group of pet photographers, this book celebrates it beautiful subject in word and image.
The first chapter situates the Golden Retriever within the constellation of the six modern retriever breeds. Hutchinson enumerates the many features that the Golden Retriever shares with all retrievers: identical hunting functions, common ancestors, manifold interbreedings, and overlapping traits.
The second chapter tells the story of how one individual, Lord Tweedmouth, created the Golden Retriever on his estate in the Scottish Highlands. Tweedmouth's breeding program--begun in 1865 with the purchase of his foundation sire, a yellow Wavy-Coated Retriever named Nous--came to fruition in 1889 with the birth of two sisters, Prim and Rose, who embodied Tweedmouth's vision of the perfect Yellow Retriever. Hutchinson's analysis of Tweedmouth's meticulous records shows his program to have balanced the rule of linebreeding with recurrent outcrossings.
Hutchinson proceeds to quantify both the degree of inbreeding within Tweedmouth's program and the relative contributions of the breeds that went into it. He calculates the precise proportions of the three breeds (Flat- or Wavy-Coated Retriever, Tweed Water Spaniel, and Setter) that Tweedmouth folded together over the course of twenty years in order to end up with Prim and Rose. By further reducing these three breeds to their component ancestral breeds, Hutchinson contrives to extrapolate a description of the Golden Retriever as a blend of four ultimate precursors (Setter, Lesser St. John's Newfoundland, Springer Spaniel, and Water Dog). Hutchinson tests his results by matching the traits of our modern Golden Retriever against the traits of its four inferred ancestors.
Finally, Hutchinson speculates that Lord Tweedmouth's motive in creating the Golden Retriever might have been nationalistic; namely, to throw up a performance-oriented aristocratic British rival to Germany's golden-coated Leonberger, which was then all the rage in European courts.

This book is a pleasure to read, because it not only contains beautiful full-page, color calendar-quality photos of Goldens, but also gives the history of the breed as it became differentiated from other retriever breeds. The author has carefully documented the early geneology of the breed, and describes the scientific rationale for the program of inbreeding, line-breeding and outcrossing which established the breed characteristics. It was a real treat to find such depth of explanation presented so clearly. Experienced breeders as well as newcomers to the fancy will enjoy and learn from this book.

Love This 16 Month Golden Retriever Calendar.......2005-05-31
This is one of the best golden retriever calendars. I have enjoyed it for several years. Both the paper and photographs are high quality and, of course, it is all golden retrievers. The 2006 calendar is expected to be released in June. A very nice thing with this calendar is that it is a 16-month calendar. Therefore, the 2006 calendar will be ready to use on September 1, 2005. Enjoy!

Book Description
Helios Megistos deals with conceptions of the Greek sun-god Helios in some selected works of late antique literature. The syncretistic picture is characterized by the heterogenous contours and polyvalent functions that were assigned to the god. The main part of the book presents Helios in the Orphic hymns, in the Greek-Egyptian Magical Papyri, in Neoplatonic philosophy and in the Dionysiac epic of Nonnos. The introduction gives a summary of the importance attached to Helios in the older Greek literary tradition, and the appendix contains a sketch of the roles attributed to Ancient Near Eastern sun-deities. Both sections shed light on the conditions that gave rise to the phenomenon of late antique sun theology. These texts, analysed for the first time from the point of view of that sun theology, rather than on the basis only of cultic or political data, extend and enrich our picture of a post-Christian sun religion that reflects strong classical and oriental influences. FR Helios Megistos befat sich mit der durch synkretistische, das heit von heterogenen Gestaltgebungen und polyvalenten Funktionszuweisungen gekennzeichneten theologischen Konzeption der griechischen Sonnengottes Helios in verschiedenartigen Werken der spatgriechischen Literatur. Die Darstellung des Hauptteils prasentiert den Sonnengott in der orphischen Hymnik, den griechisch-agyptischen Zauberpapyri, der neuplatonischen Philosophie und dem Dionysos-Epos des Nonnos von Panopolis. Eine Einleitung mit dem Uberblick uber die Wertung des Helios in der alteren literarischen Tradition und eine Appendix mit der Skizzierung von Kompetenzen der Sonnengottheit im Alten Orient erhellen die historischen Voraussetzungen fur die Eigenart der spatantiken Solartheologie. Da die genannten Texte erstmalig unter dem Aspekt dieser Sonnentheologie ausgewertet werden, ergibt sich eine wertvolle Erweiterung und Bereicherung des bisher nur von kultischen oder politischen Daten bestimmten Bildes der nachchristlichen, von antiken und orientalischen Konstituenten gepragten Sonnenreligion.
