I own hundreds of books on all types of design. This book on design with tropical flowers is the absolute most beautiful I have. The ideas depicted in this book are very simple for the most part and easy to do. And yet, the designs create a spectacular effect.

The Book arrived in a timely fashion. The photograply was beautiful. However, I found it to be a coffee-table book rather than a text book which I needed.

I loved the books big, colorful illustrations. The instructions were step by step and easy to follow. The materials list for each project made it easy to get organized for the project before I started. I also found the floral arranging tips very useful. I worked at a floral shop for a brief period of time and found the instructions easier to follow than my trainer! A good book for people who love to make crafts for their homes, friends or families.

Unless you are an extemely avid flower collector, I can honestly say that this book would be a waste of anyone's money. I personally cannot think of a more trite, soulless, and uninspiring topic. An individual might find this book somewhat entertaining for the first five minutes, but then you start to see the redundancy and transparency of the floral layouts.
I would much rather buy a book the focuses on floral arrangements across the country, designed and cultivated by regular people. I don't like viewing or reading about floral designed created by people with who's concepts lacked all sense of ingenuity and charm. An unlimited budget and lack of motivation paved the way for these gaudy and self-serving floral arrangements.

What a lovely book! It is a nice mix of flower arrangements and tips, photos of arrangements in the White House in recent times, and historical survey of flowers and their importance in the President's house. It is interesting to see the floral styles of each first lady. Those women actually exerted a strong hand in the "look" of the florals for their home on Pennsylvania Ave.
What a contrast of the Johnson girl's wedding with that of the Nixon daughter! Wow, talk about different styles, and they were not all that far apart in time!
There are beautiful watercolor illustrations as lead in to each chapter. They seem to be uncredited--at least, I would not find the artist's name after looking carefully. Like any other book these days, there are small factual errors. Tricia Nixon is referred to as the Nixon's youngest daughter (she is their eldest) and Allium Gigantium is called "tropical" (gee, it grows in my midwest garden surviving all winters.)
But those are small quibbles. Really, this is a lovely book and I enjoyed it!

Very few folks get to have the job Dottie had and her insights and stories are super!
If you love the White House and it's history...add this book to your library! If you want to learn how to put together some of those famous White House arrangements - this book will show you how!
Much more than a "how to" book...filled with backstage stories and interesting info!

Since ancient times, flowers have held a special place in people's hearts, and have been used to provide fitting decoration to various occasions.
In this book, I have tried to stay true to this essence, while emphasizing the simplicity, universality, and flexibility of both western- and Japanese-style flower arrangement.
Typically, flower arrangement focuses on attaining both harmony in color and luxuriance in shape. To these characteristics, I would like to add respect for both the natural beauty of flora such as that found in the wild, and the maximum expression of space by minimal use of materials. In other
words, my goal is to adopt the principles of ikebana that succinctly convey the desired mood.
Diverging from convention, I enjoyed expressing myself by combining easy-to-find containers and other modern materials to maintain shape, keeping the contemporary living space in mind.
I have included step-by-step instructions, accompanied by detailed pictures and illustrations, as well as helpful ideas to make arranging easy-to-understand for anyone from beginner to expert. I will introduce the fundamental shapes, and show you example arrangements in which these shapes are used.
I hope that by enjoying your time arranging, you can add a degree of richness to your well-being, and use the seasonal events in your life as an opportunity to express yourself in flowers.

The first full-length study in English on T'an Ssu-t'ung, a well-known scholar-reformer in late-Ch'ing China. Based on a rich variety of primary sources, it traces T'an's progress from his early years to his summary execution during the palace coup in 1898. The Introduction explains the premises and sources pertinent to this study, while the Epilogue provides an overall interpretation of T'an's life. The remaining eight chapters are organized in such a way as to allow a chronological and thematic appreciation of the book's subject matter. This is more than a biography of a remarkable individual. By placing T'an's personal experience in the larger social and political contexts, it also sheds light on an emergent intellectual community in modern China.
