Generic Information - A bit of a Letdown.......2003-07-10
If you are looking for generic information that would pertain to any breed, this book serves the purpose. There is basic information presented pertaining to the Brittany but I found little substance. If you are familiar with breed books from Barrons you understand what I mean. The Brittany is a unique, fiesty little dog and I was looking for a book that would delve into the temperment, development and point me in the right direction as far as training needs for my special companion. The information provided in this book does not concentrate on the Brittany and except for the pictures and brief chapters touching on the breed as a dual purpose companion/upland game hunter you can basically find the exact information on any breed in a Barrons book. I have trained Collies and Golden Retrievers and being a first time Brittany owner was hoping for a lot more information. You can go to the akc.org page and get the breed standard information for free. The book touches on hunting and retrieving but again, more in depth information can be found on most of the reputable breeder sites online. If you are looking to really get inside the breed, save your money, this book is nothing more than basic health care information that would pertain to any dog. A "complete owner's manual" it is not. I don't need to buy a book to tell me that my dog needs fresh water every day. The brief section on training says nothing about the "soft" temperment of this dog and the need for gentle positive reward methods and the risk of raising a timid fearful dog with problems that may be hard for the inexperienced owner to correct. If you are looking for a book with basic care instructions such as nail clipping, grooming, basic daily care and information on various potential health problems such as parasitic infection, explanations of the common diseases that we vaccinate our pups to be protected from, you will find the information in this book.
Bottom line- if you are new to dog ownership you may find the information useful and valuable. If you are an experienced dog owner, pass on this one.
Cute Pictures, Informative.......2003-03-17
When I put a down payment on a Brittany pup, I purchased this book in order to gain knowledge about the breed. My Brittany is now 3 years old and I continue to look at this book as a reference.
OK, with some errors.......2002-01-11
This book is OK, but contains a few errors. The first review is also wrong, tri-color is not common or acceptable in American Brittanys. That is a feature of a French Brittany, and the bloodlines are distinct. One thing the book fails to underscore sufficiently is how "hyper" a brittany is: if you have never been around a pointing dog, please take some time to do so before getting a brittany so it doesn't wind up being orphaned. They are sweet, biddable dogs, but need to run alot every day. This is particularly true of a well-bred britt, since it will come from lines that maintain field traits. Good luck.
New Brittany Owner.......2001-07-30
Excellent book for the new Brittany owner. I've bought 4 other books since I got my pup, and this one is the best. Plenty of general purpose info for any dog owner, plus lots of specifics about Brittanys. Training information is also provided.
The book was well written, easy to read and in depth........1998-06-23
Any one planning on purchasing a well mannered, friendly, active, loving, inteligent family oriented dog, should investigate Dan Rice's book first. They may find through this in depth and easy to read book that the loveable Brittany is for them. Note: Since the publication of this book, the AKC has changed the Brittany Spaniel's name to just Brittany. You may also like to know that the Brittany comes in other colors than just orange and white. Liver and white, is also common and although considered a discualification from shows, black and white or tri-colored are also commonly seen.
Customer Reviews:
If You Have A Brittany, YOU NEED THIS BOOK!.......2000-04-02
Maxwell Riddle is very informed and knowledgeable. The book is very complete- even has a chapter on what to name your Brittany! I especially appreciated the training chapter. The one problem I had with this book is that it is 13 years old, which meant that some of the information was outdated. Definitely the best Brittany book on the market.
Book Description
Developed in France from working setters and spaniels to produce a hunting dog who would be a biddable, loyal and versatile companion, the Brittany has proven itself in both fields. Although bred for function, the Brittany is a natural beauty in his handsomely fringed coat and appealing expression. The breed's affinity for children and its affection and playful personality have made him a favorite choice as a family pet. For the owners who can provide this energetic dog with the activity, stimulation and training he requires, the Brittany will not disappoint.
Written by one of the country's most respected dog show judges and authors, Richard Beauchamp, this book provides insightful chapters on the breed's history, characteristics and standard as well as puppy selection, grooming, health care and feeding. The new owner will welcome advice about puppy-proofing the home, preparing for the pup's arrival, housebreaking and preventing puppy problems.
The book is not only well written and informative but also beautifully illustrated with over 135 color photographs. Helpful hints and important information are highlighted to provide easy access to everything the reader needs to know about life with a Brittany from puppyhood to the senior years.

Comprehensive Guide for Brittany Owners.......2006-11-05
As the cover states the book provides a comprehensive guide for Brittany owners. It cleared up misconceptions about the beginning of the breed that I acquired from other "authoritative" sources. For any one interested in a highly energenic affectionate companion dog this book and contact with good examples of the breed will bring pleasure to your life.
Customer Reviews:
a fun read.......2005-06-02
This book was entertaining. If you love Brittany's you will find this book to be a fun read. It was real life with Brittany's. It gave me a new appreciation and understanding for the Brittany I have lived with for the last year.
A Warm and touching journey.......2003-03-05
Mr.Buchanan made me laugh uncontrollably and cry as deeply. I read this book in one sitting and was so moved I proceeded to purchase several for friends. Anyone who has ever loved a pet - of any kind - will never forget this book. The author writes with acute sensitivity and extraordinary humor. One will never look at tomato juice in the same way after "Living With Brittanys".
Bravo....and 20 stars!!!
Fine Memoir.......2003-03-03
This book confirmed what I remember about Brittanys from childhood; they are mishievous, physically challenging, and personable. I especially enjoyed reading about the effect that the distinct personalities of three Brittanys had on the owners. The special attention that these two people gave to their dogs and the pain that they experienced when the first two died is particularly poignant. Humorous and in some cases hilarious incidents punctuate this fine memoir. I also found the description of beautiful wilderness areas compelling. This is an uplighting and inspirational book for troubled times.
High expectations, bitter disappointment.......2003-02-04
As a prospective Brittany owner I have been researching the breed for about 6 months and from the outside, "Living with Brittanys:A Survival Guide" seemed like it would provide me with the essential information I needed to decide whether the breed was right for me. Sadly, I was bitterly disappointed. "Living with Brittanys" is a frustratingly OVER-descriptive, self indulgent short story that actually made me angry in parts because of it's non-relevance to the subject matter. The story itself could have been about ANY dog and I learned all I needed to know in the last two pages through a bullet pointed list of common brittany traits. I wish I had saved both my money and time.
Living with Brittanys: A Survival Guide.......2001-02-21
Since I had the honor of meeting these three dogs, the descriptions of their lives with the two owners meant more to me than the average person; however I will attempt to be unbiased. This account will certainly give one the idea of what different personalities dogs have within the breed which can affect your choice of a dog that must suit your lifestyle and surroundings. Through semantic skill and vivid descriptions of the terrain, the reader will sense Bill's affection for the environment, the need to respect it, and our responsibility to take care of it. Most importantly the reader will learn the pitfalls, the pleasures, and the humor of owning a Brittany.
Book Description
When Charles Gusewelle first saw Rufus as a pup, he was a mere tangle of orange and white fur. The plan was that he'd be an outdoor dog. But the feisty, inquisitive Rufus decided otherwise, and quickly made his way inside the house--and soon after, inside his owner's heart. The Rufus Chronicle is Gusewelle's moving chronicle of the thirteen years he spent with his devoted, loyal, and much loved Brittany spaniel, Rufus. It is an affecting, unforgettable portrait of the tender relationship between a man and his dog. As Gusewelle so eloquently notes, "Some of us learn forgiveness by studying the lives of saints. And some of us keep dogs. . . ."
Customer Reviews:
An Unexpected Treasure.......2004-08-30
I dislike books about dogs as a general rule, but The Rufus Chronicle was an unexpected treasure. Gusewelle speaks with a solid yet familiar voice about the joys and the learning curve of raising a dog from a pup with the intent for it to be a hunting dog. I haven't hunted or had a dog for many years, but with every turn of the page I was transported back to a time when my greatest pleasure was taking to the field with my canine companion. This book has the rare quality of speaking to the reader on a basic human level, causing you to not only remember scenes from your past, but also sounds, smells, and feelings. If you hunt, keep dogs, or are simply an animal lover with a big heart, then you must read this book.
Even if you don't hunt, this book is for dog people........2001-12-09
This memoir by columnist Gusewelle of the life of his dog Rufus is rich, funny and gives a thorough explication of what it meant to live with the Brittany Rufus. I was not partial to the passages on hunting, as I am not a hunter, but I was still engrossed in the book, because these incidents told a lot about Rufus, and after all, HE loved the hunt. It's a pleasant read, with a not unexpected end that while sad completes the story satisfactorily. If you know someone who loves to read, hunt and loves his dogs, this book is definitely the perfect gift.
Experience A Full Range of Emotions.......2000-12-05
This book catches your attention immediately. The author's style makes you want to curl up and read without putting this book down for even a second! I am a Brittany owner but dog owners of all breeds, especially gun dogs, will find themselves smiling, crying, laughing and more as they take an emotional journey with the author and his dog through the seasons of their collective lives! ....a wonderful, heartwarming experience, don't miss it!
Great Read for Dog Lovers.......1999-12-31
This will warm the hearts of all dog lovers. Dog owners will reflect on their own experiences with dogs as they read about Rufus, his yard mate and his Master, Charles. Do not be surprised if you find yourself smiling, crying and even laughing out loud.
A must read for anyone who hunts over dogs.......1999-08-13
This is a tremendous book. Not a book just for Brittanylovers, but for all lovers of gun dogs. The book takes you to thejoys of friendship, hunting, birds, and dogs in the field. It reminds us of what is important, and what matters. It makes you laugh, and helps you see the world in better terms. It makes you pat your dog on the head and be thankful for him.
If you spouse doesn't understand the attraction of fleeing quail on a cold November morning give her this book. A read through and she'll understand why we always pursue "Another Autumn."
Don't miss this book. It's a keeper.
Customer Reviews:
Great Book!.......2003-11-18
This is a great book for anyone interested in bird dogs, especially Brittanys. Most of Mr. Williams books that I have read have been instructional whereas this book is a more personal story about his favorite dog Winston and his performance in the field. It is right up there with "The Rufus Chronicle". I just recently got a Brittany from the American Brittany Rescue and have not hunted him and actually haven't been hunting since I was a little girl with my dad. However, after reading Mr. William's book I have had the urge to get out there and try with my very first dog. This is a must read for Brittany lovers!

Sophisticated, artfully rustic, sometimes practical but more often purely fun, the sculptural garden adornments presented here are leagues beyond the cutesiness of many garden crafts. There are no flowery painted birdhouses or little welcome signs; instead we find abstract wire spider webs, weathered wooden benches, elaborate willow trellises, glistening stone mosaics, and shimmering structures of glass. The bulk of the book concentrates on the history of artistic garden adornment and showcases stunning examples, both historic and contemporary. How-to hints are included for a dozen projects, most of which require fairly advanced crafting skills, including a wildwood bench, whimsical mosaic people, and a massive slate urn built with the techniques of dry-stone walling. For the adventurous, this volume offers lots of unique ideas. --Amy Handy
Book Description
This unique new book is a practical guide to creating handcrafted features for your garden. Every major craft is covered, including mosaic, metal, wire, glass, pebble, wood, coppice work, and willow. There are ideas for both practical and ornamental features, including decorative pebble paths, hanging glass panels, mosaic pools, wooden whirligigs, driftwood furniture, and willow sculptures. Garden Crafts describes the historical origins of each craft, the diversity of objects that can be made for the garden, materials - new and recycled - and where to get them, paints and other finishes, design considerations such as placement and associated planting, and tools and techniques. Each chapter concludes with two projects to create for your own garden, complete with a list of required materials, step-by-step construction techniques, and beautiful color photographs of the finished project in a garden setting. (9 3/4 X 11 1/4, 148 pages, color photos)
Customer Reviews:
garden crafts by geraldine rudge.......2000-04-06
The photographs alone lead one down a yellow brick road withcreative garden keepers who like to combine handwork with the naturalart of plant. The projects include step by step instructions by the craftsman as well as practical information about where to place your project and how it will hold by to wind and rain. These are not " a trip to the crafts store and one hour of time " projects. They will require you to work with supplies such as glass or wire but the result will be something that personalizes your garden space in a substancial manner.
