chapter four dedicated to artist and cartoonist Robert L. Dickey.......2007-08-21
I am reading the book Boston Terriers, The Early Years, by Cathy J. Flamholtz. I started it in the car on my way to pick up my new puppy, so far it has been fun to read. It is a collection of text written around the turn of the century (1880's to the 1930's)about the development of 'Americas Dog' or the early Boston Terrier.
As an artist and OBB/BT enthusiast I have especially enjoyed reading chapter four dedicated to artist and cartoonist Robert L. Dickey (1861-1944). An avid animal lover, Dickey started painting animals as a young kid. He later advanced his career by sketching horses for a prominent sporting magazine. In the 1930s he became know for his newspaper strips 'Mr. and Mrs. Beans', 'Buster Beans' and 'Buckey and his Pals'. Dickey also illustrated dog cartoons for Life magazine and for other advertisers from 1914 to 1930. A smattering of these illustrations are in Flamholtz book.
I am finding that Dickey truly captured the character of these early Boston breeds. He often illustrates from the puppies perspective and incorporates many other adult animals and dogs in his cartoons. From their little wiggly bottoms to their run-and-tumble adventures, visually the cartoons are spot-on. They also illustrate funny topics that OBB or BT owners should easily relate too.

For People Who Love Boston Terriers.......2002-02-28
This book gives a wonderful history of the Boston Terrier. As a pure American breed, the author traces it's origin, it's rise to fame as a wonderful pet and companion, and it's life in the media spotlight. I had no idea how famous they once were. The photos and drawings that are included are exceptional and really bring the book to life.
An entertaining history of the breed.......2000-05-10
This is a great book for Boston Terrier fans and fanatics. Detailed text and photos of the breed from the first "official" Boston, through the evolutions to today's breed standard. While not for someone seeking information on how to care for a Boston Terrier, this is a great breed history for those "hard core" Boston-lovers!

ASIN: 0719800307 |
Book Description
This book describes the theories and processes of repairing and adjusting the modern watch in precise and meticulous detail. De Carle takes his reader through every stage and operation of watch repairing, and with 553 illustrations, it can justifiably claim to be the best illustrated book on practical horology yet issued, and one of the best of its kind on any subject.
Customer Reviews:
Maybe not so Practical.......2007-08-23
As a watchmaker by Trade, i bought this out of curiosity. From the techinques of openning a watch case to the description of indiviual watch parts is grossly outdated. New technology in watch production rendered this book obsolete and would only be suited to someone whose advanced in their studies as a watchmaker rather than a novice.
Practical Watch Repairing Book.......2007-08-13
This product, though very good, was not what I expected. It is apparently a very early book on watch repair (updated through the years), written by a watch repairman. The book targets persons wanting to begin a watch repair business, so it included the ideal work space, all the tools necessary to begin an ultimately profitable business, all good information but more than I wanted or needed. It is sometimes difficult to read because a few sections are quite technical and include jargon, but I was also able to locate and understand the information I needed for my own home watch repairs.
Mechanical watch repair.......2007-05-25
I am amazed that this book (my edition printed in 2006) is an exact copy of a 1971 printing. Mechanical watches of today are readily described in this 35 year old text.
The 1971 dust jacket has hand drawn lettering. The 2006 dust jacket has been cleaned up by computer aided drawing. It was amazing to find out that the author passed away in 1989. He unfortunately lived long enough to see the Japanese demolish the mechanical watch industry.
This book does have a place in today's world...The mechanical Swiss Watch is making a comeback, although limited to those willing to invest in a $400 and up watch. But if you buy a good Swiss mechanical, it can be passed down and repaired by your heirs.. This book will probably still be available, when your heirloom is in need of repair...
Small steps can allow you to save .......2007-03-21
SImple things using the right tools and procedures can allow you to get the satisfaction for the simple repairs. I would suggest doing classes etc or going to a professional for the more advanced types of repairs. The book also allows you to gain an appreciation of actually what makes then tick and tock.
Practical Watch Repairing.......2007-01-10
Very useful and thorough watch repair instructions for mechanical watches. Much detail on repair procedures. Very useful for beginners. This book and Henry Fried's book,"The Watch Repairer's Manual,4th edition", are considered classics in the field. Get both if you can.
Book Description
In this book, the author has dealt with the usual faults likely to develop in each type of movement in a clock's general use, from the lordly grandfather to the humble alarm. All the tools and equipment are described and illustrated, together with the ways of using them. The craftsman's most important and valuable tools of all—his skillful fingers—are shown in use in the clearest manner. Over 400 line drawings have been specially made from parts under working conditions.

Practical Clock Repairing.......2007-01-27
The book was what I was looking for and more. Answered questions I didn't know I even had.
Book Description
Dealing with a complicated watch used to be a rare job for the watch repairer, but with the popularity of the automatic, it is almost commonplace. Furthermore, the increased interest in calendar work, alarm watches, and chronographs will undoubtedly bring more and more complicated work into the workshop. This book deals with complicated work essentially from the repairer's point of view. The action of each mechanism is briefly and clearly described, dismantling and assembly instructions are given, as well as oiling charts and hints on fault-finding and their rectification.
Book Description
This book examines the technology and manufacture of all types of watch; offers collectors advice on what to look for; and includes a step-by-step assessment guide to use when purchasing. Basic instructions are provided on repair work, identifying essential tools and materials.
Customer Reviews:
Old pocket watches explained.......2002-08-14
The focus is on antique European pocket watches, especially British ones, this being a British publication. The technical history of watches is thoroughly covered, the various outdated watch mechanisms--verge, fusee, cylinder escapement--are explained, and interesting footnotes are included, like the wage records from a 19th century watch shop. A chapter on repair will get you started, and even tell you how to restore the blueing on the watch hands (heat them in a tray over an alcohol lamp). The author has spent much of his life studying and collecting old watches, and has produced an easy-to-read guide filled with interesting and useful information.
A very well written summary of the watch development.......2000-04-08
If you are a "newbie" in the world of watch collecting, this is the right book for you. It focuses the watch evolution from the late 16TH century to the modern quartz watch. It has a lot of graphics and black and white pocket watch pictures...The book, however, is, in my point of view, intended for a quick knowledge of the watch's history and mechanics...It doesn't cover, for instance, the modern automatic wristwatch. I think that's the best book to read before trying something more techicall. The reading is very straight forward, but the experts in the field will find the book very summarized.
Book Description
Almost a companion to Donald de Carle's earlier work, Practical Watch Repairing, this book's contents include general condition of the movement; cleaning and oiling; balance pivots; fitting a flat balance spring; fitting a breguet balance spring; positional timing; further considerations when fitting a spring and observing the point of attachment; general notes on springing and timing; other methods of positional adjustment; and timing machines.
