Generates mixed feelings........2007-05-30

I love trees. I enjoy the company of trees, and many of them are old friends that I see on my daily walk. Reading Champion Trees gives me an appreciation for what my tame neighborhood specimen could become. I like to imagine that the 90-foot hemlock just south of our house could one day grow to over 300 feet tall, changing local weather patterns and causing small aircraft to adjust their flight plans.

At the same time, because I do love trees, I really wish people would leave them alone. This collection of record setters is an adequate sampling, and we don't really need to know if there is a tree a couple of feet taller. The book encourages the reader to measure trees and submit a report of possible new champions. I don't think the information would be worth the impact of more attention. Van Pelt even tells of trees that have suffered and died because of the increased attention and traffic generated by their champion status. This book is an excellent and sufficient record of majestic trees--now let's call it good and leave the trees alone. I sincerely hope there is never a revised edition of this book.

Fascinating Big Trees!.......1999-11-26

A must for anyone who likes trees. I know the author and this is his fourth book on this subject. The pictures are good and informative. The text makes the subject very approachable to anyone who likes trees. It describes how anyone can measure and submit giant trees to various national and local registries. Very interesting!

This is a book about one of those magical places that once you get there you don't want to leave. It's in the path of boats coming from Miami to the West Indies and is the place to see in the Caribbean before you die. Casa de Campo is the Caribbean most complete resort by far where any possible hobby in the world could practiced at world renowned conditions -besides skiing, except if you change it for water-sky-. The book about the Casa de Campo's Marina is definitely a 5 start in class, quality and content. This is the only book available about Marinas from an architectural standpoint. Blueprints, sketches and more than 300 full-color pictures are a never ending source for one of the most luxurious approach to Caribbean Architecture. It's about the renowned Marina at Casa de Campo, La Romana, Dominican Republic and is a must for anyone willing see from the inside out as many options as possible to recreate a tropical paradise despite if it's and apartment or a houses under 2,000 sqf or a masterpiece above 20,000 sqf.
In contrast with W.R. Blain's book for "Marina Developments" -That is an excellent and maybe the only book about Marinas from a structural standpoint- this one is an architectural approach to Marinas and all the elements around it such as Yacht Club, Apartments, Houses, Restaurants and all related services. It's full of details and references in a text that is catchy and easy to read. My only concern was that I thought it was pricy in the first place despite that it was printed and bounded in Italy, but Blain's book is above the $250 and this one is more related to interior design and architecture so it's worth 5 out 5 starts.

¿the chilean "One Hundred years of loneliness?.......2000-01-30

An amazing novel buy one of the most complete authors of Chile. Though some parts the novel might be a bit slow, full of descriptions, in this novel more than in "Coronación" or "El Jardín de al lado", José Donoso creates a full and complex environment. You can touch the tension, the smells, the pictures, the air. One of the most fancy things is that you perfectly know that the story is a fiction, because the author tells you that all the way through the novel. Though, when he tells you the most freak things, you believe everything!, just because he created, as in García-Márquez's "One hundred years of loneliness", the most coherent environment. A terrific novel, with a "slight" political touch.

La Gran Metáfora de Donoso.......1999-09-26

Como buen chileno que soy, no podía dejar de leer la mejor obra del mejor escritor chileno. Casa de Campo es, sin duda, una de las mejores obras del "boom" latinoamericano de los años sesenta-setenta, y será, seguramente, recordada por todo el mundo como la culminación de una serie de obras magnánimes de Donoso: Coronación, por ejemplo, y El Obsceno Pájaro en la Noche, son obras con base, con fundamente, pero en ambas falta algo, algo que, sin dudas, tiene Casa de Campo; a pesar de que en algunos párrafos la lectura se pone aburrida y el texto suele alargarse sin más, la obra en sí es maravillosa. Claro que es cierto que es una metáfora de la situación que se vivió en Chile durante en régimen militar del -justamente- enjuiciado Augusto Pinochet, ¿cómo se puede explicar, de otra manera, que los mayordomos se rebelen, que se corran tupidos velos, que todo ocurra a sabiendas de los dueños de casa, pero, al mismo tiempo, sin que ellos se enteren? Una gran obra. Un excelente narrador. A mí me gustó mucho, la trama es interesante aunque no se quiera conocer su origen, está bien escrito. A must buy book, by one of the finest writters of America.

Casa de campo combines the techniques of traditional novels with the 20th-century intermingling of reality and fiction. The novel's central theme of authority as figured in the discourse, its play between reality and illusion, and its dialogue with literature and society as a whole form the subject of this study. Murphy explores the illusory authority of the narrator in controlling characters' voices, and establishes a parallel with the characters' contradictory power over each other; the ploys of the narrator recall and parody the authoritarian regime which is reflected in the novel. The narrator's authority is further defined in a reading of the novel in which author, narrator, reader and character become linguistic constructs in a textual play, and meanings emerge at variance with the authorized commentary. MARIE MURPHY is an Assistant Professor of Spanish at Loyola College in Maryland.
