Book Description

"There have always been bear stories, as long as there have been campfires and shadows in the night, and as long as humans have shared the earth with their fellow predators....

"Part of humankind's enduring fascination and connection with bears lies in the similarity between us and them. Bears stand upright and their footprints resemble ours. A skinned bear looks much like a naked person. They are intelligent and independent, possessed of distinct personalities. They exemplify maternal care, discipline, and teaching, and they nurse in a sitting position. They can use a claw like a finger or two claws like chopsticks. They can travel fast and lose their tempers. They are omnivorous, and can kill and eat us, as we can kill and eat them. Resilient, brave, and defiant, the California grizzly did not go quietly."—Susan Snyder, from the Introduction

_Bear in Mind_ is the story of the California grizzly bear. Once arguably the most powerful and terrifying animal in the California landscape, he now lives in the imagination, a disembodied symbol of the romantic West. _Bear in Mind_ is also a portal into one of California's great resources, the Bancroft Library of the University of California, Berkeley. More than 150 images from the library's archives and collections—newspaper illustrations from the gold rush, paintings from early scientific expeditions, photo albums, sheet music, settlers' diaries, fruit-crate labels, and more—accompany the bear stories of Indians, explorers, vaqueros, forty-niners, and naturalists, among others. The result is a uniquely compelling natural history, a grand book worthy of its subject.

5 out of 5 stars A great book.......2004-08-30

I absolutely enjoyed this book along with the great photographs and illustrations. It is hard to imagine that the great bear once roamed so much of California, especially in the modern day concrete jungles that sprouted from such pristine wildlife habitat. Ms. Snyder did a great job of putting together and telling the stories of this facsinating animal. Can you imagine, hiking Malibu beach and seeing grizzlies feasting on a beached whale? I was born 100 years too late. If you love grizzlies, or California history, buy this book!!!

5 out of 5 stars A National Monument.......2003-11-05

While this book is as hefty as a grizzly, and costs as much as a concert ticket (granted, only an upper mezzanine seat), Bear In Mind is *the* book for my coffee table: I want to read it luxuriously, I want to pore over every written word, every detail of art and artifact in its pages. I want my Californian friends to see it. I want to get copies for their homes. This book reclaims the legacy of the grizzly, and ought to replace the bear flag as the symbol of state and national pride and humility.

4 out of 5 stars Year of the Grizzly.......2003-11-08

At first I didn't know if I was going to like this book, but all of the sudden I was just sucked into it. This book does not end like a normal book you would read, it isn't one of those books that you know how it is going to end, it kept me sucked in until the very end. And it still seems like it should have another sequel.

"Grizzly" is one of those books-- if it's hot you sweat, and if it is cold you need a blanket. It makes you feel like you are there. The only thing I didn't like about this book was the way the characters talked. The thing that made it difficult to read was the slang.

Will Reed was the reason this book was so good. Will fought for what he believed in. Sometimes he fought the Americans and sometimes he fought the Mexicans, but no matter what side he was fighting for, Will fought for the rights of everyone's freedom.

When I read this book I just couldn't put it down! I don't like frontier books but this one was just amazing. It teaches you a very valuable lesson and will have you hanging on every last page. The ending is to die for! Everyone should read this book!

Book Description

A traditional Native American healer from the Karuk tribe shares his personal story of reconnection to the Great Spirit in contemporary America.

• By Bobby Lake-Thom, author of the bestseller Native Healer.

• Provides Native American shamanic perspective on disease and healing.

• Explores indigenous social identity in a spiritual and political context.

• Reveals authentic indigenous traditions and ceremonies from numerous tribes.

This redemption story of Native American healer Bobby Lake-Thom invites the reader to enter a world of authentic indigenous traditions and ceremonies. Bobby, also known as Medicine Grizzly Bear, didn't recognize his shamanic calling at first. He didn't know that his vivid dreams, psychic abilities, and visitations by wild animals and ghostly figures were calls from the Great Spirit.

In the age-old shamanic tradition, it took a near-death experience for the message to get through to him. Though still a young man, he was wracked with debilitating arthritis. Unable to handle the physical and psychic pain, he set out into the wilderness determined to kill himself with an overdose of drugs and alcohol. But before downing the substances, he approximated a Native American ceremony as best he could, sending a heartfelt prayer for assistance to the Great Spirit. He woke up--alive--the next morning and received a message from Eagle, telling him to seek help from Wahsek, a medicine man in the northern mountains. And so Bobby's apprenticeship began. Forbidden to reveal Wahsek's secrets until 10 years after his death, Bobby is now free to share this fascinating story with the world.

5 out of 5 stars Speechless, Humbled & Grateful.......2007-09-18

I am a psychotherapist in private practice in NYC. I've had a burning desire to understand the depth of what's being expressed through illness and imbalance for a very long time. Finding western psychology's understanding of mental health to be helpful but limiting, I've explored psychospiritual perspectives ala the Open Center in NYC & Omega for years. Through the generous sharing of his remarkable life & work, I feel that Bobby Lake-Thom has given me a strong sense of what is truly occurring on multiple levels. This is the most honest and revealing of these kinds of books that I've ever read. More than once I found myself speechless and truly humbled by his beautiful spirit. Not a New Ager, this guy is the real deal: answering the call of Shamanism, resulting in many many years of apprenticing with healers coming from a truly indigenous lineage, who unfortunately have almost been eradicated by our government. What a rare & invaluable treasure he is. Most grateful for the opportunity to encounter him through his writing, I hope to have the privilege of meeting him in person.

5 out of 5 stars Great incite into native american spirituality.......2007-05-11

Bobby Lake-Thom takes the reader into the world of native american spirituality. He does an excellent job describing his introduction into a once hiden way of life. I have met him and find that he is an incredible person. He is truely a kind and generous man. His book tells of extraordinary happenings in his life. Those who only believe in "western" society and nothing else will find this book far fetched. However, those who believe in and have experienced this way of life will find this book amazing. The laws listed here are very similar to other native american cultures. They are not just made up. I encourage you to read this and his other 2 books to begin understanding of this way of life.

5 out of 5 stars Authentic, powerful, inspiring.......2007-04-10

This book grabbed my attention immediately with its gritty, up-front honesty and vulnerable, first-person narrative. Bobby Lake-Thom's story takes us along the "Red" road of truth through tough, unbalanced beginnings, subsequent violations, confession, redemption, and awakening to a powerful healing destiny and life mission. I appreciated the generosity with which Bobby reveals the details of his doctoring journey, understanding that it is a powerful gift he is bestowing on all of us readers for him to divulge so much about his path, his teachers, and later on in the book, his doctoring cases.
If you were born into the Western, predominantly "White" way of life like me, you may be shocked and even stressed by the fantastic psycho-phenomenal nature of Bobby's experiences and spiritual/physical trials. You may have a knee-jerk repulsion or denial concerning the list of violations against Nature and the Great Creator, which Bobby insists are universal in truth whether you believe them or not, and which must be avoided or atoned for in order to live in health and balance. I can only speak for myself and tell you that once I allowed my initial reactions to settle, I breathed into Center to discover a profound desire to be reconnected and restored to my truest self and to Source. From this, a new humility emerged which allowed me a greater resonance with these principles, and a new willingness to take action caught fire.
I am grateful that the author includes instruction and encouragement for readers to cleanse themselves of past wrong and come again into right relationship and respect for self, other people, Nature, and the Creator. I took this book to heart and began my own process of healing and transformation (and I'm feeling a world better!). I believe that wherever you're at in your growth, development, and understanding, "Call of the Great Spirit" can help you go to the next level. In such times as these, when radical change often comes unexpectedly and at accelerated pace in every strata, from personal to global to universal, this book and its stories come as strong medicine and answer to our prayers for help and health. A heart full of gratitude to Medicine Grizzlybear!

5 out of 5 stars Most authentic native healung book.......2006-07-26

This book was by far,one of the most authentic depictions of genuine native american "shamanic " healing and medicine practices ive seen.Having spent many years with native people, its nice to see books written by native people in their own words(vs.anthropologists, mystic writers etc.)It is a gritty, true to life account and case studies, of the power and complexities of doctoring people in the traditional, ancient ways. Its a testament to how much ancient knowledge all people have lost, in the domination and abuse of indian people. There are many useful precautions to prevent violating natural laws and unconcious spiritual mistakes, that could wind up in illness and inabalance. This book is powerful, and stays on your mind and heart long after you read it.If I was on a desert island, this book would be with me.So many thanks to this author.

5 out of 5 stars Very practical approach to a mystical subject........2003-11-30

I read "Native Healer" by the same author many years ago and I liked both books. This one gives you the added benefit of information on his teachers and case studies of healings as an afterward. He tells his story in such a personal way I felt like I was right there with him at times. It was also interesting to read about the sorcery and curses that he had to contend with as a healer.

I also appreciate the fact that he is a college professor and works at a normal job like the rest of us yet is in touch with the old ways. It also encouraged me how he talked of times in his life where he lost everything and had to start over and he did so by first seeking out a place to ask the Great Spirit for mercy. It gives me hope that there are people out there keeping the traditions alive for future generations. If he was nearby I'd be seeking him out right now.

I found his suggestions very helpful and I continue educating myself in the Native ways until I can find my teachers. May I also recommend:

    Book Description

The California Bear Flag and the University of California football team the Golden Bears emblemize the great animal that has been extinct in California since the 1920s but once numbered perhaps as many as ten thousand in the state. Forty years after its original publication, University of California Press proudly reissues California Grizzly, still the most comprehensive book on the bear's history in California. The lessons of the book resonate today as the issues of protection of wildlife habitat versus unfettered development of land for human use are debated with increasing urgency.

Though the work is forty years old, Storer and Tevis remains a valuable sourcebook for those wishing to understand the full nature of an extinction. It's all here: bear biology, relationships with Indians, relationships with Spaniards, stories of famous California Grizzlies, the ~real~ life and time of Grizzly Adams, and more. Whether you are a biologist, a historian, or just an armchair wildlife enthusiast, you will find California Grizzly a fascinating and necessary book.

                    Book Description

US American landscape designer Kathryn Gustafson has earned an outstanding international reputation. The recently opened Diana Memorial Fountain in Hyde Park, London, is the latest in a long list of acclaimed projects realised together with her partners Gustafson Porter (London) and Gustafson Guthrie Nichol (Seattle), including the Arthur Ross Terrace of the American Museum of Natural History (New York), Chicago’s New Millenium Garden, the Great Glass House interior (Wales), the Amsterdam Westergasfabriek park and the Garden of Forgiveness in Beirut.

The 30 international projects portrayed in Moving Horizons exemplify Gustafson’s distinctive and highly artistic style, characterised by sensual, sculptural forms, and her cooperation with architects such as Norman Foster, Ian Ritchie, Mecanoo, Jean-Paul Viguier and Renzo Piano.

Recognition of the significance of her work has also come in the form of numerous awards,
including the Chrysler Design Award, and selection for New York MoMA’s forthcoming
exhibition “Groundswell. Constructing the Contemporary Landscape”.

This book not only provides great photos of Kathryn's built works, but it describes and shows her design process, as well as the transitions her practice went through as it grew. Well worth the read and great to have in the design library.

                    Book Description

In this first monograph on his work, architect Neil Denari sets his sights on the gyroscopic horizon, a term based on the altitude device found in most aircraft. Just as a plane's gyroscope creates an artificial horizon line for the pilot, Denari often eliminates the physical earth as datum or locus of experience, turning to cultural, economic, and graphic forces as points of departure for his work.
Denari, the third director of Los Angeles's innovative Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc), has made a reputation worldwide for his projects, installations, and writings on the question of technology and contemporary culture; it has been said of Denari's firm that it moves toward the question of place "with the same dynamic flow as a Boeing crossing the International Dateline headed for the arrival lounge at Narita Airport."
This long-awaited book combines photography, cultural criticism, and meditations on Los Angeles and Japan, along with Denaris trademark computer renderings and descriptions of over 20 architectural projects from the last ten years. Three of the most important projects discussed are the addition and renovation of the Arlington Museum of Art, the construction of an experimental space at Gallery MA in Tokyo (which won awards from I.D. Magazine and the Architectural Foundation of Los Angeles), and the first Microsoft retail store. Other projects include prototype housing in Tokyo, the Kansai-kan Library Competition, the Vertical Smoothouse in Los Angeles, Technology Research Park in Agoura Hills, and the Museum of the 20th Century in Los Angeles.
Gyroscopic Horizons, whose territory ranges from the freeway to the Internet, illustrates the intense vision of this architect who draws inspiration from the complexities of modern-day machines and life.

Gyroscopic Horizons shows an indepth look into the process, motivation and presentational work from one of the most important young american architects currently practicing. For a first monograph, Denari's work is seamless offering a unique journey through the architect's portfolio and logic. Denari's book approaches a very important issue for understanding culture and technology. In 1987, renowned architectural critic and historian Kenneth Frampton (architecture, Columbia U) separated Neil Denari out among his peers as a more thoughtful designer. As Frampton predicted, Gyroscopic Horizons contains enormous insight and energy into this thoughtful architects work. Landmark First Monograph!

                        Book Description

Disclosing Horizons examines the influence of perspective on architecture, highlighting how critical historical changes in the representation and perception of space continue to inform the way architects design.
Since its earliest formulations, perspective was conceived as a paradigmatic articulation of space that influenced the rituals of everyday experience. Temple argues that underlying the symbolic and epistemological meanings of perspective there prevailed a deeply embedded redemptive view of the world that was deemed perfectible.
Temple explores this idea through a genealogical survey of the cultural and philosophical contexts of perspective throughout history, highlighting how these developments influenced architectural thought. This broader historical enquiry is accompanied by a series of case-studies of modern or contemporary buildings, each demonstrating a particular affinity with the accompanying historical model of perspective.

I purchased this book last year.

The book is comprehensive and covers the past century of India from the Tata company's perspective. It has a collection of rare and beautiful photographs capturing important moments in India and Tata' history. The quality of the Hardbound book was exceptional. I gave this book as a present to my Mom, and boy she was happy!

If you are a Tata employee or an Indian or a honest entrepreneur, this book is sure to enthrall you for quite some time.

                        Thanks,
