My Grandfather.......2006-11-30
I am the Grand daughter of Bernard Martof!!!! I have liiked a the book. It has beautiful photographs. Great facts too!! If you need a reptile question answered you should look at this book!!! If I ever do a reptile study I think I will look in this book. I like the frog on the cover too!
Terrific resources as field guide or reference.......2005-02-21
Excellent book! It's a little more detailed that a typical field guide but what I like most about it is that its specific to our area. So, while I have a larger field guide (for the region) I also really love having this one because it's more focused. In the beginning of the book there's an introduction to habitat with great pictures showing what the habitats look like. The book then goes into the specific species - I was particularly interested in the salamanders and amphibians but the sections on snakes, turtles and lizards are super too. The pictures are great, descriptions cover approx. size, colors/patterns, species that they could be confused with, habitats, and egg laying (timing, incubation etc). Great book to have on hand.

I've had and used this book since it came out in 1980. I always recommend it to all of the classes and seminars I give on reptiles and amphibians and to all of the people who ask for a good field guide because, for the size and cost, there are none better for this part of the country. Well worth the money if a handy, accurate, well-done field guide with great photos and range maps is what you want.
Great way to learn about what you see.......2000-05-09
I love this book. We see a snake in the woods, and take note of as many characteristics as we can, then look it up later to learn more about it. Same with frogs, toads, lizards, skinks! The actual information provided for each reptile is slim but very interesting. This is a great book to have if you spend any time in the wild in Virginia.

A review.......2000-06-17
Excellent photographs, maps and text, but uses the tongue-twisting common names devised by academics in the first half of the last century. Common names for North American amphibians, turtles, reptiles and crocodilians have been standardized since 1978, and have generally been adopted nationwide. Unfortunately, this book will cause much confusion about name usage. The publisher should have had this book reviewed by herpetologists of a younger generation; they would have caught the out-dated common names, and saved the publisher some embarrassment.

Most complete VA snake guide EVER!.......2007-05-01
Didja know that some juvenile snakes may not look anything like adults? Wanna identify them all, positively? Wanna know EVERYThing about them, where they hang out, what they like to eat, when and where to find them?
THEN BUY THIS PUPPY!!! You will not be disappointed. My name is in the library book 4 times in a row, back in my borrowing days - now I own one.
Excellent book to learn about and id our snakes.......2005-02-21
I was so glad to find a snake book that's centered on our area. I have a field guide for the broader East Coast but this is a neat one in that it centers in on species right here. The maps are full-page maps (with VA counties delineated) showing with dots where the particular species has been seen. I wish they had also used color or gray-scale to shade the counties rather than just the dots but having the counties shown is so neat that I'm willing to get my colored pencils out and shade in the maps when I need to. The descriptions of the snakes are terrific too. They cover description (colors, patterns, sizes), habitat, range (beyond VA borders), habits (what they do during the day, night etc), reproduction, food, enemies, success/failure of keeping them in captivity, and folklore which I find interesting too. A great reference on snakes. There are photographs too - all at the center of the book, about 54 in all, as well as line drawings in other places of the book
Terrific book.......1999-09-12
I checked out this book from the library and liked it so much I had to have my own copy! It's a great reference book and has good pictures of the snakes and maps of the areas of Virginia they are found in. The text is informative and has subtle humor in places. These guys really like snakes, and it is contagious, even to someone who really doesn't like them! It has helped my daughter's fear of snakes greatly.
Excellent photos, easily understood and concise........1999-08-28
Great book for anyone in Virginia who wonders about snakes. I enjoyed it and reccomend it. It helps puts to rest worries about whether a snake is "dangerous" or not, and generally adds insight into these much maligned reptiles. It is also going to be a big help when my grandchildren visit me in the Roanake area from Manhattan and ask about "Mr. Snake."

where's the brief.......2004-09-21
I couldn't wait to get this book. I really like this groupf of bulbs and I wanted to learn more about growing them and the varieties I could grow and the work being done with them. Well I was in for a surprise. this book does little of that. What it does do is give the reader the history of the plant and its introduction into horticulture. The work that went into it is staggeringbut nothing for the gardener. Infact after reading it I don't think the authors even grow the plants it is treated as more of an object than a plant. this was made worse by no color photos just illustrations. now don't get me wrong they were nice illustrations. but would it have killed you to include some photos. I can onot reccomend this to any gardener unless you are really into botanic history.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book. There are commentaries on design at the introduction, which I found informative and interesting. Also, the quality of work that is displayed is absolutely amazing. There is verything from furniture to lighting, to the most innovative products of our time. The editors did a fantastic job on the page layout, truly a mastery of graphic design as well. Another great series of books along these lines is the Graphis yearbooks. I love the book, and I can't stop looking at it!
