Mary Pope Osborne is a brilliant writer. She captivates the audience to whom she writes for in a magical way. Anyone who critizices her is just jealous and wishes that they had thought about writing the Magic Tree House Series themselves. I volunteer at an Elementary School Library in California, and I must say that the most seeked for Series by students is without a doubt the Magic Tree House Series. Mary Pope Osborne is able to charm children of all ages, even those who normally are not really interested in picking up a book. I have to say that I, myself love reading all her books. My grandchildren love the magic within them, and I love how they learn tidbits of information that no child would go out of their way to learn. Furthermore, the introduction to those subjects always inspires them to ask questions and talk about the books that they read. I hope that she continues writing for many years to come. My youngest granddaughter has the entire collection, and we look forward for future books.

Do you like the rain forest? If you do then this is the book for you. It is about a brother named Jack and a sister named Annie.They both travel to the rain forest. It is a really good book. Some parts are funny and some aren't. If you love the rain forest and want to know more read this book . Recommended for people who love suprise endings. Does Jack and Annie survive the rain forest? Read on to find out. Will they be attacked? Read on. You have to read this book. Recommended for second graders and up. By Hayden

Jack and Annie on the Amazon.......2007-01-21

Mary Pope Osborn is one of my favorite authors. She has written many books and she has a great imagination.
In the book, Afternoon on the Amazon, Jack and Annie find themselves Amazon rain forest. Here, Jack and Annie thought that they were in a bush, but they were on a tree that went over 150 feet. The forest was filled with trees like this, and it had three layers. They met many animals like monkeys, snakes, and crocodiles. I suggest that you read about their adventure in and enjoy it for yourself.

MY BOY LOVES READING IT.......2007-01-07

My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

Great bat book, good Spanish teacher.......2004-08-13

If you're looking for a book with both English and Spanish, this is a great one. It not only gives you the entire text in English and in Spanish, the book also promotes one of the world's most disabused animals. I live near a very famous bat cave (Carlsbad Caverns) and we know what a boon bats are to the world. It's nice to find a book about bats that is so redeeming.
I like to introduce Spanish words to kids at a young age. I like having illustrations that are exotic and strange and beautiful for kids to look at. This book meets all my requirements of being an interesting story, defending an underdog, and introducing the Spanish language.

Great story, strangely attired.......2005-05-28

I'm not sure if this is appropriate for children - the story and drawings are a bit hallucinatory, though the underlying message is wonderful, along the lines of Pinnochio. It certainly caught my attention when I first read it at age 20. Ffangs is a vampire who wants to be human, but when people see him they flee in fright. Through the various (and many) twists and turns in the story he finds a girl named Selena living in the bottom of a dark pit, who has a snake in her mouth. The snake is the Truth, whose bite makes people what they really are. Ffangs eventually gets his wish, and the story ends in a wonderful way, with Selena vanishing and Ffangs setting off to find her. The last line of the book is

(The adventures of Ffangs will be continued in the next book.)

which is a great way to end a story, though to my knowledge the sequel was either never written or never published. That's okay though, maybe there was never even any sequel planned.

My only quibble with the book is that the drawings don't match the tone of the story, at least to my eye. They are filled with explosive, manic energy, while the story itself works on a much deeper level. Also, the story begins with the story of a rooster named Attila, which while somewhat of the same theme, serves mostly as a strange introduction. One can see Attila as the poet himself, if one is inclined to read things into the story.

Mostly Dry History, Little Arrangements.......2006-04-19

Mostly dry historical text, and most of the "photos" are not of the recreated new arrangements, but of ancient paintings and old drawings about history. Of the very few recreated arrangements, most look rather ordinary, with some photos even too small to tell. There were only 4 or 5 that I'd say were truly original and outstanding.

I had this book recommended to me by a college. As it's a new book I thought I'd have a look. Having studied Floristry and Flower Arranging I am now Lecturing in Floristry and have been looking for a new book to recommend to my students. This book has long been awaited by students and teachers alike. A lot of books covering this subject have been written, but are now out of print. This will fill the gap. A beautiful book. I can't recommend it enough. Blooming marvelous!

It is rare to discover an auther who has focused on the topic of flower arranging from a sociological perspective. By placing flower arranging in the social context of it's time, the reader is better able to appreciate the use of particular flowers, artistic design and color combinations. Also, by looking to England, we here in the U.S. can better appreciate our colonial era of flower arranging.

Welcome reprint of a classic.......1999-07-29

Barnard's classic, now back in print, is not only a decorating book, but also an encyclopedia of ethnic textiles, their history, and their care. Every page is filled with gorgeous color photographs of the use of textiles in settings from the American southwest (Navaho blankets) to London (Middle Eastern Kilims) to Paris (African Kuba cloth). Items from hats (Afghani) to huipils (Guatamala) are shown framed, used as furniture coverings, made into pillows, or just hung imaginativly on a wall. I am delighted to find it back in print in a soft cover version. Each time I've loaned out my precious hardbound copy (and then only to special people), I have made SURE I got it back. A must-have for anyone who loves textiles, and at a ridiculously low price given the size of the volume and its plentiful illustrations.
