Customer Reviews:
Great Reference Material.......2005-02-28
As on online vintage jewelry dealer, Atlanta vintage jewelry dot com, Warman's book was one of the first in my reference library. Sure, it has some faults, but not to the degree to make the book 'useless'. I used to spend my evenings in bed reading through the pages, getting familiar with the vast array of information.
The book includes excellent pictures with clarity, and lots of them. It covers jewelry designs from various eras, beginning in the mid-1700's through present day.
Many people in the vintage jewelry circles may refer to Warman's as the 'bible' of vintage jewelry as it also covers both fine and costume.
In spite of its somewhat unreliable index referred to by others, this hefty book is well worth the purchase price. I'm glad for mine.
Gail Gupton, Author: The 31-Day Diet of Spiritual Enlightenment and Seekers of Truth.
Drool . . ........2004-08-15
Over the years, Warman's guides to antiques have established a reputation for reliability. This volume is the third (2002) edition of their jewelry guide. It's lavishly illustrated with examples from many styles, eras, and price ranges. It provides a feast for the eyes and a lot of useful information as well.
Romero divides the material according to time period and, when appropriate, according to style and material and country of origin. She gives concise summaries of the essentials of each and links jewelry fashions to world events and clothing styles. Sometimes her discussions are a little too concise for this curious reader ( to be fair, the book is a guide, not an in-depth treatment), but she provides a full bibliography at the end for those who want to dig deeper. There's also a glossary of jewelry-related terminology and a section on marks.
According to the introduction, this edition reflects the increasing globalization of the marketplace and the influence of internet buying. Romero has expanded coverage of Scandinavian jewelry and added discussions of Neo-Renaissance and Beaux-Arts jewelry. Every illustration is in color, and the captions are fully detailed. Several reviewers of earlier editions mentioned that there were problems with the index. These problems seem to have been corrected in this edition.
Any problems I have with this book are mostly quibbles. The author makes a point of linking changes in jewelry fashions to changes in clothing and in social conditions. I wish that she had put in a few period illustrations showing the fashions and the jewelry worn with them. This is probably a little out of the reach of an identification and value guide, but it would have been a nice touch. Nonetheless, this is a wonderful resource for jewelry collectors and, in fact for anyone who thinks they might like to become one.
A visual feast for jewelry lovers.......2004-04-10
"Warman's Jewelry," 3rd edition, by Christie Romero, is subtitled "A Fully Illustrated Identification and Price Guide to 18th, 19th, & 20th Century Fine and Costume Jewelry." The book is full of fascinating and useful features, among them an extensive bibliography, glossary, index, and chronology. There are also a number of appendices, including a hallmark identification guide and a guide to the marks and names on Mexican silver jewelry and metalware.
The 272-page book is full of hundreds of clear, beautiful full color photos of jewelry. Each photo is accompanied by essential information on each piece depicted. The items shown represent a huge price span; in this book you'll see a $336,000.00 gem-encrusted platinum bracelet, a $10.00 brooch shaped like a poodle, and lots in between. Many types of jewelry are pictured: necklaces, cufflinks, earrings, lockets, scarf pins, etc. Included are pieces representing a broad variety of artistic approaches: whimsical, elegant, gaudy, graceful, fierce, futuristic.
Also fascinating is the broad range of materials covered: diamonds, emeralds, opals, turquoise, gold, coral, agate, wood, rhinestones, plastic, brass, porcelain, etc. The photography is accompanied by an interesting, well-written text. Jewelry production is placed in historical and cultural context. There are also special sections devoted to jewelry of particular cultures (Native American, Mexican, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, and Finnish). Interesting trends such as Victorian-era black jewelry and "eye miniatures" are also highlighted. Overall, this is an endlessly interesting and stunningly beautiful reference work.
AN OLDER PERSON 'S VIEW OF THE SUBJECT.......2000-02-20
AS AN OLDER PERSON, I HAVE 'LIVED THROUGH' MANY OF THE FADS WHICH JEWELRY MANUFACTURERS REFLECT. I STARTED COLLECTING JEWELRY, AND DECIDED TO WRITE A RESOURCE BOOK FOR THE NOVICE. WELL, WHEN I READ MS. ROMERO'S BOOK, I FOUND THAT IT WAS SO INCLUSIVE THAT IN ORDER TO FILL IN THE GAPS, AS IT WERE, MY WORK IS REALLY CUT OUT FOR ME. THIS BOOK IS A WONDERFUL ADDITION TO ANY JEWELRY COLLECTOR'S REFERENCE LIBRARY. THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME THE SPACE TO REVIEW IT.
warmans jewelry.......2000-01-06
A great book, with lots of valuble information, but the index, is not accurate.this makes it very frustrating to look things up....warmans should issue partial refunds to the dedicated customers who purchased the book...

Book Description
Although bottles specially made to contain perfume have been used since antiquity, in modern times their designs have become as varied and original as the exotic scents they contain. Their history in the twentieth century has been marked by the development of elaborate packaging: boxes, labels, ribbons, and medallions. The product of modern marketing--an attempt to create a personality for each perfume with its own distinctive name--perfume bottles have been the work of some of the century's finest designers. This lavishly illustrated survey presents some of the most striking designs, outlines the historical and social background to their creation, and reflects the talents of leading designers such as Ren Lalique, Lucien Gaillard, and Julien Viard, as well as glassmakers including Baccarat, Dpinoix, Brosse, and Lalique. Inspired creations resulting from close collaborations are also explored, such as between Paul Poiret--the first couturier to introduce his own perfumes--and his artist friends, among them Paul Iribe and Georges Lepape; or Elsa Schiaparelli and the Surrealist painter Salvador Dal. A passionate collector of perfume bottles, the author has made a detailed study of company records, trade journals, and other archival material. She has also interviewed leading figures in the perfume industry, their associates, or their surviving relatives. With its authoritative historical analysis, more than 200 illustrations in color, and a reference section listing over 500 major perfumers, designers, and glassmakers, this book provides an indispensable record for collectors and designers alike.
Customer Reviews:
Top notch.......2006-05-24
This book does an excellent job of showing the cream of the crop of collectable 19th and 20th century perfume bottles (and often their presentation boxes). The text is profusely illustrated with small black and white photos, while also containing several full color sections illustrating in detail hundreds of different bottles. The text goes into intricate detail for the novice to expert collector without dumbing it up or talking down. The 16 pages of concise bibliographys at the back are infinately useful, if you are wondering when where why who or how a house started its probably in this list. Jam packed with facts, tips, annecdotes and illustrations by a TRUE expert in the field.
A very nice and interesting book.......2000-02-05
I know that the writers are savvy perfume bottle collectors. They have incorporated years of experience into this book. That is the reason why that among all the books on this subject, this one is the most appealing. I have also used part of her materials (w/permission) to write my book (published in Chinese).
Outstanding!.......1999-08-10
As an avid collector of advertisements and literature on perfume, this is the first book I always recommend to fellow collectors. In the past ten or twelve years, many books were published to cater to the exploding popularity of perfume bottles as a collectors item. Christie Lefkowith's book stands out because of its focus on the ART of perfume bottles (hence the title), rather than their monetary value. Bottles are viewed in the cultural context of their time, with photographs of by far THE best quality I have ever seen in perfume books. I agree with the previous reviewer, though: too bad the book ends with the fifties. There should be a sequel.
Beautiful history & refrence of bottles.......1999-07-31
This book is lavished with the most magnificent perfume bottles and their pacaging. full color photos of Lalique, Baccarat, and other exquisite bottles along with the histories of the fragrance companies who commissioned them. There is also an index of these companies for quick refrence. I found the title missleading. the author is of the belief that the "art of perfume" died 30 years ago. All of the bottles are from the late 1800's to the 1960's and I feel that the title should have mentioned this. If you collect antique bottles or are looking for a good fragrance history book, this is a must.

fantastic banana porridge, easy recipes.......2007-01-10
I'm a little disappointed that this is the only Rasta cookbook out there, however I really enjoyed this one. Recipes did lack a little flavor but with a little tweaking these recipes help to create new and healthy alternatives to everyday food. Overall this cookbook was well worth the money.
EASY RECIPES!.......2006-07-12
This book delivered on so many levels. It provided me with quick and easy recipes, Best of all it is comletely vegetarian! This book will definately add to my favorite recipes.
great casava .......2006-02-17
Its a ital cook book, just what i been looking for :) thankyou
Comming from a rasta...........2002-04-27
Comming from a Rasta I must admit that it is hard to find books that teach u to cook vegeterian and "ital" all at the same time. All though I already knew how to do both BEFORE I bought the book, It was still a nice gesture to see the recipes ranging from all over the carribean and African Decent. Some of these recepies include but are not limited to peas and rice (made with brown rice), herb dumpling, plenty of different soups, stews, tofu patties, derserts including Ital ice creams (mango, coconut, pawpaw...etc ), Breads made with no added perservaties or dairy products (fully vegeterian), and plenty of fresh fruit drinks as well. Including carrot juice (zion juice), pawpaw, freshly homemade punches, etc....Being a cook myself I must say that i was impressed by the context. These receipies are more or less like Cousines rather then just ordinary Vegeterian food. One can make good use from it. A meal that I have often found most deseriable in the book is the vegeterian stuffed bell peppers taken from the entree catagory, peas and rice/ sweet corn and rice taken from the side dish category, and steamed callaloo taken from the vegetable and side dish category. Having it washed down with some sweet coconut water or some other kind of NATURAL fruit (taken from the juice senction ) or vegetable juice makes a deserible meal that vegeterians, non vegeterians, Rastas, and non Rastas will feel priveledged to have enjoyed.

Customer Reviews:
Helpful.......2007-05-06
I purchased this book since I have citrus trees in my back yard in Florida and had a particular disease or pest. The photos helped some. I did have to consult a much larger book at the Home Depot on citrus problems published by Ortho. Between all the reading, the internet and talking with others, I chose the proper chemical and am pleased with the results. The info on Hawaii wasn't of much value, however I guess they are in a sub-tropical area as well. Not sure how one achieves the beautiful fruit pictured on the front cover though. Our trees in this area have had a blight spread by wind and many nice trees have been cut down to prevent the transfer. Of all the varieties I have seen growing here, very few have nice skin or unblighted foliage. Hopefully I will be able to reach that goal. The book also covers a number of fruits that I have not observed in our area. The book is well laid out and is a good guide for basic reference. Appreciate Ortho publishing this book for us amateurs.
Very good overview.......2002-12-21
This book provides a very helpful overview of subtropical fruits. I was interested in finding good fruits to plant that are hard to obtain in stores and do well in my climate. By perusing this book multiple times over the course of several months, I was able to begin to get a feel for what would be good candidates. I have since planted several of them, am enjoying good fruit, and still like glancing through this book in a free moment...
Way too vague.......2002-12-02
If you want to know how to take care of your tropical fruit you won't learn it here! If you want to see pictures of citrus fruit, that you will see. I have pineapple plants along with banana, mango, orange, key lime, tangerine, and papaya trees. This book was worthless to me. I already know what they look like.
Straightforward.......2001-07-29
I bought this book when I was in middle school and memorized it :-p. Now I am a college junior and I'm working towards interning at a tropical fruit grove later on. I won't say this book started me on that journey, but it's a pretty good guide for learning
Interesting book but needs to answer more questions........1999-09-21
I read the book from Ortho on "All about Citrus and Subtropical Fruits" but in my reading was not able to find out which type of trees could and could not be planted around a swimming pool. I am very interested and would appreciate a more detailed review on this.

Fruits of Bali.......2003-10-23
Fruits of Bali is a beautifully designed field compass to the exotic nursery of tropical fruits that flourish on lush, bright-green, equatorial Bali. A jaunty introduction is bracketed by charming, nineteenth century antique prints of Bali's "most typical fruit, salak," and "the celebrated durian, most notorious of all Southeast Asian fruits." This preliminary background material acquaints the reader with Bali's small individual landholders-who plant a few native fruit trees in their house yards and wind up producing the stunning carnival of shapes, tastes, colors, and smells on display in the tri-weekly village markets. The authors enlighten Western visitors about communal fruit collectors (harvesters), village market day schedules, local fruit prices, and bargaining techniques, but "assume no responsibility for the reader being overcharged when buying a banana!"
Thirty-nine different Balinese fruits are spotlighted in informative, sugar-charged briefs complemented by brightly colored photo illustrations. The Eisemans tell us about each specie's historical and native origins (early Spanish missionaries thought the passion fruit's flower symbolically represented the crucifixion of Christ) plus a botanical description of its size and appearance. Fruit by fruit, we survey their distinctive varieties, flavors, and seasonal availability; how the Balinese eat them; where they grow on Bali; practical applications (caffier lime juice is also used to wash hair!); and medicinal properties (plus name translations between Balinese, Bahasa Indonesia, and Latin). Connoisseurs of fine fruit will love this look at delectable, rare produce largely unfamiliar to the Western palate and diet. Travelers currently on Bali graduate fully prepared to recognize and seek out the mouthwatering taste treats that surround them-from their hotel breakfast buffet table (of papaya, watermelon, and pineapple) to the flamboyant rambutan, breadfruit, pomegranate, and mangosteens that await their pleasure in the local markets.
Fruits as religious offerings in the Isle of gods.......2000-06-18
Various kinds of tropical fruits grow well in Bali Island. And only the best quality ones are selected and made into beautifully arranged ornaments offered to the gods. It is such a spectacular sight to see Balinese women heading to the temples carrying these colorful fruits on their heads. Readers will agree with the author that only in Bali can one find this breathtaking ritual.
