Tess and Cassie, both a special breed known as Karelian bear dogs, have helped humans find a way to cohabit with bears without destroying them. And Susie and Thor are physical therapists who motivate their patients to speak or move their arms to get the German shepherds to come to them.

Some of the stories in Working Dogs are downright touching, such as the one about the farmer who won Belle, a golden retriever, in a magazine contest after describing how he could use a service dog to help him maintain his family farm after he'd become paraplegic in a motorcycle accident. Wheely Willy, the chihuahua whose spinal cord injury left his hind quarters in a cart, provides a special kind of motivation during his visits to patients at nursing homes and veteran's hospitals.

A great spotlight for dogs who love serving humanity!.......2004-03-09

This book was a wonderful, wonderful publication. It helps to show how canines are working in the world of humans, helping us to become well, to stay safe in the world, etc. This is the kind of story that should make headlines in newspapers, but rarely does. These dogs and the people who help them/handle them/love them SHOULD be spotlighted!

As for the reviewer who felt that this book added nothing because another book like it was published before, I say that there are NEVER enough books out there like this. I loved reading these stories, just as I did in the other book. I enjoyed watching the stories on Animal Planet, as well. People who appreciate *working* dogs would never be able to get enough of these stories. :)

This book is a mediocre (...) book. (There is another book) of the exact same title pulished a year or so ago, "Working Dogs" by C. Owens. I found the original much more entertaining.

Not a dog of a book.......2000-05-04

I was looking for a book for my 5-year old nephew - who is a dog nut - when I stumbled across Working Dogs. After getting it and reading some of the stories to him, I got a second copy for myself. The story and pictures are fabulous and the story of Wheelie Willy brought tears to our eyes.

The book just popped out at me and I had to get a copy. Absolutely adorable! It really does make you realize what great hearts and minds dogs have. Great writing and photography too!

Informative, an easy & fascinating read.......2003-04-08

This book's forté is 2 things: Its' explanation of the negative impact of millions of monoculture, traditional lawns - not on just the environment, but on the lifestyles and wallets of those who tend them. And then it offers sound advice (which does -NOT- start with "get rid of your existing grass") which can be easily followed by the average homeowner. The solutions proposed in this book are not radical, unattractive schemes, and most of the suggestions offered will result in a BETTER LOOKING YARD and savings of time and money. I read it from cover to cover twice. I hope to soon have my yard working for me, instead of me working for my yard.

I found a good compliment to this book in "The Lawn, A History of an American Obsession," by Virginia Scott Jenkins. If you're interested in more of the history and background of the entire lawn concept, (and some neat old pictures of advertising,) you'll love this book. It explains how agriculture, chemical companies, the garden industry, golfing, housing developments, world wars, etc... and the advent of new inventions have come together to result in an entire lifestyle revolving around 'the lawn.' The complete answer to the question, "Why do we have lawns, and what did people used to have around their property?" Read this, then read "Redesigning" to see what having all these lawns does to the world and the people in them, (and, of course, suggestions for improving things in your own little slice of the world.)

This is a wonderful resource about a very important environmental problem - the American lawn. The diagrams are especially clear and complete. It provides the history of the lawn, scientific background about the problems associated with the lawn, and also gives very practical advice about how to create a Freedom Lawn. I initially got this book (first edition) from the library, but decided this was one I wanted to have for my personal reference - especially since the second edition includes updated information.

scholarly - good for critical discussions.......2001-10-26

Most Americans do not realize how much their tastes in gardening have been affected by marketing on the part of lawn care companies. Nor do they seem to realize what environmental havoc they wreak through the lawn care practices preached on TV, and promulgated every time they watch the Masters Golf tournament on TV and think they should try to emulate those greens and fairways at home. They have been seduced into an unrealistic world that wastes their time (why mow?), money (why put fertilizer down 4 times a year?) and the environment (Do they really even have the weeds or bugs in their lawn that the 'weed and feed', and 'grub killers' are prescribed for? If not, why are they paying extra for the privilege of putting down toxins they don't even need?)
This book is a scholarly approach to reviewing the problem - highly recommended if you tend to ask "WHY?" before "How much?"

It changed my habits.......2000-03-28

This book was truely a revalation for me. I consider my self to fairly conservation minded, yet I had know idea how much more I could do. This book taught me, more than anything else, that it truely is the little things that count. I liked it so much I gave copies to my family of christmass.

A must for beginners.......2000-08-01

Katrin Cargill is a very resourceful and inspiring designer, with a clean, " livable " style. Her designs are simple, beautiful and functional. She is able of creating an impression of cosiness and elegance out of the simplest of fabrics.

The layout of " Bed Linen " is, just as of her other books in the same series, very user-friendly (to beginners, that should be I believe, one of the top priorities ), with detailed, coloured, fold-out drawings.

Having said that, I would advise the editors to look again at this particular book's choice of designs. Nice as they may be, we tend to have the impression of an inadequatelly researched and somewhat hurriedly assembled crowd of sometimes beautiful but underdeveloped and somehow repetitive ideas. And this certainly doesn't make a favor to the author.

The sub-categories included could be better arranged in two separate books, one with pillows, sheets, bedspreads and dust ruffles, and one with canopies and headboards.

For a more ample idea of what Ms. Cargill can really offer you, look also for her wonderful " Simple Curtains " and her rich " Fabrications ".

This is a useful book, with ideas easily put to practice that won't ruin your budget,while offering the bedroom an immediate graceful uplift.

Let me first say that Katrin Cargill is a very inspirational stylist. The format of all her Home Living Workbook series is user friendly and the instructions simple and adequately illustrated. However, she seems to have run out of inspiration on this particular book.The projects and the fabrics used are all too common. The Bed Linens book is not useless, but I believe that an improved edition would be necessary to keep up to her readers' expectations.To anyone new in sewing I would suggest her perfect Simple Curtains. I would also recommend saving money for the wonderful Fabrications, a constant source of sewing inspirations or even sheer day dreaming!

Pretty pictures, excellent photography, lots of neat things to look at, visually stimulating--this is a great book to leave out as a conversation piece. Or to thumb through before bed, very relaxing!

But as far as the knowledge dispersed, it is nothing new. Or maybe I just know my percales and thread counts and different fill fibers better than the average shopper?

Like the average shopper even cares?

If you want a how to guide...this ain't it! If you want eye candy, feast your eyes on this!

There's more than one way to make a bed, and humans throughout history have devised every sort they could imagine. From a simple blanket laid on the ground to elaborately carved four-posters hung with sumptuous draperies, from a hammock swinging under the stars to a stifling cupboard bed built into a wall, the ways in which humans have gone about trying to get a good night's sleep are myriad. This book, illustrated with some 140 images, takes readers on a lively tour of beds and sleeping customs over time and around the world.

Beginning with "sleeping low," Carlano and Sumberg show that, whereas in Europe and North America sleeping on bedding on the floor was the lot of the poor, in many other parts of the world it has long been a cultural and aesthetic choice. Beautiful tatami-futon ensembles in Japan, intricately patterned rattan mats in Borneo, and cozy textile pads, pillows, and quilts in Turkey have kept people warm and comfortable for centuries.

Yet "sleeping high," on raised platform beds, started early, too: such beds are known from archaeological finds and tomb paintings dating to the fourth century BCE in Egypt. From ancient Greece and Rome, the narrow, rectangular bed spread into Europe and then to North America, seeing innumerable elaborations along the way -- not only in the designs of the bedsteads themselves but also in the styles of bedding that became integral parts of the sleeping arrangement. In the modern West, people stowed away Murphy beds in the early 1900s, romped on water beds in the 1970s, and now can buy futuristic beds designed by furniture artists.

Rounding out the tour, Carlano and Sumberg describe the ways people have found to sleep safely and comfortably while on the move -- whether the travelers are full-time nomads sleeping in tents or twentieth-century tourists in Pullman cars. They devote a chapter to the special beds, cradles, and cribs designed for infants and young children, and an appropriately final chapter to the abundance of sleep imagery associated with death. In short, Sleeping Around offers an informative and entertaining look at the history of beds and -- under the impetus of both functional needs and aesthetic tastes -- their ever-changing designs.

Six Malayan sun bears were captured and radio-collared from June 1999 to December 2001 in Ulu Segama Forest Reserve, Sabah, Malaysia Borneo to study home-range characteristics, movement patterns, activity patterns, population density, and bedding sites. A total of 343 locations were recorded. Home range sizes, calculated by the 95% adaptive kernel method, averaged 14.8+/-6.1 (SD) km^2. Bears were found in both primary and logged forests. Daily movement distances from these bears averaged 1.45+/-0.24 (SD) km, and were affected by food availability, especially availability of figs. Male Malayan sun bears were primarily diurnal, but a few individuals were active at night for short periods. The majority of the 26 bedding sites consisted of fallen hollow logs. Other bedding sites included standing trees with cavities, cavities underneath fallen logs or tree roots, and tree branches high above the ground. Malayan sun bears exist in primary and logged forests. Well-designed logging practices, maintenance of large trees with cavities, protection of fig trees, and strict control of poaching should be incorporated into forest management practices in logged forests.
