This was my first contact with Whiskey and her Afghan. Mysteries galore keep you guessing throughout. The story moves at a fast pace, with a light and humurous touch. I was left wanting more and will certainly be reading other books in the series.

This is a great book. While I love Whiskey and the situations she encounter, I love Abra, the dog, even more. She really keeps Whiskey on her toes. A very enjoyable read, especially if you like "cozy" mysteries.

If you have a sense of humor and strong feelings about dogs--especially other people's dogs--this is the mystery series for you. Realtor Whiskey Mattimoe has been saddled with a very difficult canine, and therein lies lots of humor. The setting is fun, too; author Nina Wright has created a quaint but troubled Michigan tourist town that's a blend between Saugatuck and Traverse City, where the artistic types face off against the conservatives. Mix in a steady stream of tourists, and let the fun begin. In this book, the first in the series, the action starts when a tourist dies on a massage therapist's table--NOT from natural causes. Then another tourist is murdered, and--as the book cover suggests--Abra the Afghan hound complicates everything. I can personally promise that you'll laugh and gasp while reading this series.

A hilarious cool read on a hot day!!!.......2007-08-23
I took this book to the pool on a recent 115 degree day. The cover alone helped cool things down. And Wright's rapid-paced tale of kidnapping and murder made me forget the heat. The scene where a certain body slides into frozen Lake Michigan is as thrillingly written as any action sequence I've ever read.

I can't believe that an author would write a book about a main character who is so clueless about children. Even though the author creates a very self-sufficient boy, it's the actions of Whiskey that are off-base. When Whiskey finds out through a note she receives from a ex-con that the boy who is in her care is missing, does she start looking for the kid? No, she goes back home and gets drunk and half-naked with her ex-husband. In the morning when the kid still hasn't shown up, does she start looking for him? No, she and her equally clueless employee go on a helicopter ride, where she finally sees the kid being pulled at by a stranger. I know this is purely fiction, but even in fluff like this, one doesn't expect the main character to be that stupid.

I'm always looking for a new mystery series, and I just happened upon this book. I'm definitely hooked. I loved the main character, and I also loved the small town setting. I think the supporting cast was great, and I even liked them more than the mystery.The novel itself is fast paced, and it revolves mainly around Whiskey's lost charge, Chester.

I like lots of kinds of mysteries, from literary to chick-lit. Although this series features a chick-lit type heroine, it's better written and has broader appeal. In fact, I gave copies of this book to several male friends and male family members; they all liked it a lot. The reason? The heroine, Whiskey Mattimoe, is the kind of gal men like. She makes 'em laugh; moreover, she's smart, athletic, and independent enough to earn their respect. This is also a well-constructed mystery with enough suspense to keep you turning pages way past bedtime.

As a difficult breed to raise, all prospective owners owe it to themseles to read this book first, then make the decision on if they really want this breed. As a fancier and owner of four Afghans I really enjoy reading this book. Well documented, it provides all you want to know about the breed. My only regret is that The Book is getting old and no newest editions are on sight.

This is a wonderful book for both the sewer & the non-sewer alike. The clothing designs are stunning & inspirational, if only to look at. Most are quite colorful, imaginative & have their own unique style. Basic pattern diagrams are included as well as detailed instructions for stitching & piecing. Patterns include ponchos, kimonos, coats, capes, skirts, shirts & accessories such as purses & belts to name a few. The book is packed with instructions for embellishments including applique, embroidery, quilting, & painting. Adding pleats, gathers & ruffles is also covered. Caring for fabrics is included as well. The book is full-color on glossy stock. There are numerous photographs of the clothing, all are gorgeous & true works of art. I fell in love with "Magic Kimono" decorated with a metallic sun & moon design.

I had been admiring this book at my local library for quite a while and was surprised to see it offered through Amazon at a great price. This book has wonderful photos of each plant (and species) as well as detailed information, which makes identifying plants so much easier than with any other gardening book out there. If there is one draw back, it would have to be the weight. With over 1100 pages, it is not a book to carry around the garden.

This book works best if paired with The American Horticultural Society Encyclopedia of Plants and Flowers. Each book stands on it's own but the two together give total information and abundant photos. I bought one set for new homeowners about to plan their first yard and bought another set for myself. Even after gardening for many years, these books provide answers to questions that come up every gardening season.
The books are substantial in weight as well as information.

Poorly researched.......2007-09-27
This book is poorly researched. One section of the book talks about fungi being plants that do not undergo photosynthesis. This idea has not been accepted by the science community since the mid 50s. It goes on to mention potato blight as common pathogenic fungi....potato blight is not casued by a fungi. The causative pathogen (an oomycete) was once in the kingdom fungi but later moved to a different kingdom in the late 70's. This leads me to beleive that the authors have taken a lot of updated information for granted. I could go on and on about this book. If you are new to gardening and and want something to ready this is an OK book. If you want or need a book that give real uptdate advice this is not the book. In my opinonin this book falls into the catagory of books that are ment to be on a coffe table and not really used. A good name was used to sell a poor product.

I've been gardening for a few years, and this book really broadened my knowledge. Also made me feel less like a cheapskate for not running out to buy all the latest garden gizmos - they point out that you can reuse pruned shoots, for example, to stake up your garden plants. Highly recommended.

If I could only have one book it would be this one. It is what is says...an Encyclopedia. Luckily I'm not limited to only one book as it does not cover some topics as well as other books. But that's the point of an encyclopedia..touch on all topics as best as can be done for the space available.
The first 30 pages are dedicated to the history of the organic movement and the basic design recommendations for an organic garden.
The next 70 pages cover the basics of soil care, watering, weed control, plant health and raising plants.
The next 100 pages cover various garden aspects like lawn care, woody plants, garden flowers, container gardening, gardening for wildlife and the use of greenhouses and covers.
Another 100 pages cover growing fruit, herbs and vegetables. This section alone is larger than 90% of most gardening book and well worth the price of the book alone.
It has the standard appendix and reference sections you would expect for a gardening book but a surprising extra is the H.D.R.A Organic Guidelines for Gardeners that is included as an appendix. I didn't even know such a thing existed until I read this book. Absolutely wonderful!

as a l;andscape designer, this book shows not only when plants flower, their silouhette and height, but the width, which no other resource book gives. I use it for all my design classes and my students love how clear and precise everything is. Wonderful garden book.

I love this book because it is so comprehensive and very useful for planning a new garden. Plants are grouped by season and color. Very helpful for landscaping. Shapes sizes etc are all very accessible.
8000 plant descriptions! 4000 photos! A bargain at $50........1996-08-07
In one volume, the AHS Encyclopedia manages to cover 8000
plant varieties, 4000 of them with color photos. This is
by far the best way of getting a comprehensive directory of
garden plants at a reasonable price. For each plant, it gives
basic information such as size, color, season of bloom,
cold tolerance, etc. and often considerably more information
about cultural conditions, propagation, and the like.
It is not perfect. For instance, its information on shade,
water, and pH requirements is sketchy and sometimes conflicts
with other sources I've consulted. But it is very good.
In all, this is a far better deal than getting multiple
volumes of the Taylor's Guides, although for those who want
more information the RHS Dictionary ($800) is more complete
and those who want more photos of each plant the Roger Phillips
and Martyn Rix series (Random House) is richer.
Perhaps someday soon the RHS Dictionary and the AHS
Encyclopedia (which is based on the RHS Encyclopedia)
will be available in CD-ROM. Until then, this paper
volume has far broader coverage than any CD-ROM
collection I've seen so far.

This two-volume work is a comprehensive collection of the pictorial sources for sport in Pharaonic Egypt. Adopting a broad definition of sport, its scope embraces relevant cultic scenes as well as archery, charioteering and horsemanship, hunting, wrestling, open-air games and board games, acrobatics, dancing and water sports. Over 2,000 documents are given detailed descriptions, with systematic annotations relating to the place, date and content of the documents, as well as the most important secondary literature. The hieroglyphic captions are given in transcription and translation. A representative selection of the pictorial documents, accounting for approximately half of the total material, is presented in the illustrated volume. Accompanying maps classify the material by subject area with indications of their topographical distribution and chronological proximity. The publication of this corpus of materials makes available for the first time the complete pictorial tradition of a great, ancient sporting culture, the intention being to stimulate and intensify research in these fields by the provision of the basic materials.
