A tiny little book.......2004-02-14
This tiny little book, only 30 pages or so, is actually a fun read. Lots of good photos. It is very basic and limited in scope.

Probably the best but still I want more..........2005-12-06
The is probably the best English language identifier but I still find a lot of stamps that aren't listed here. I wish the editors would start with page one of the Scott catalogs and list every word on every stamp. A Herculean task? Maybe but much more useful. Still, though, for the price, this is a very nice guide that will serve all collectors very well.
Book Description
Drawing upon her vast knowledge of perennials and how they perform in the arid Southwest, Mary Irish has produced the definitive guide for gardeners who want to create lush, colorful gardens while keeping artificial irrigation to a minimum. This book will help Southwest gardeners meet the challenge of growing perennials successfully by providing inspired, practical information on how to design dry-climate gardens and an A–Z guide to 156 proven plants. Each entry includes the plant's scientific and common names, distribution, cultural needs, drought tolerance, and ornamental characteristics. Written in a clear, reader-friendly style and profusely illustrated with sparkling color photographs, this invaluable volume makes Irish's expertise available to every gardener.
Book Description
Salvia is derived from the Latin word salvare, "to heal," and for centuries salvias have been valued for their medicinal and culinary qualities. Salvias, commonly known as sages, grow throughout temperate and subtropical parts of the world, from sea level to altitudes of more than 11,000 feet (3400 meters). They occur in many forms: perennial, biennial, annual herbs, and evergreen or deciduous shrubs. These amazingly varied plants are also noteworthy for their remarkable resistance to pests and diseases, their drought tolerance — and their beautiful flowers.
Following the great success of Betsy Clebsch's first book on salvias comes this expanded edition, The New Book of Salvias: Sages for Every Garden. Betsy has added more than 50 new species and cultivars such as Salvia castanea and S. recurva, bringing the total to approximately 150 beautiful, gardenworthy species and significant hybrids. She documents them alphabetically and includes botanical descriptions, information on habit, blooming cycle, recommended companion plants, and delightful historical tidbits of discovery and usage. Nearly 100 new photos and illustrations make this new edition even more attractive than its predecessor.
In her ardent pursuit of salvias, Clebsch has explored the wild to collect plants and seeds to test in her California garden. The resulting wealth of cultural information in The New Book of Salvias ensures that our gardens will not only be exquisitely aromatic but also wonderfully picturesque.
Customer Reviews:
New book on Salvias.......2005-09-08
Found the book interesting but limited since it was written promarily for the US gardener. Would have appreciated more illustrations. Nevertheless a worthwhile addition to the library.
Adding over fifty new species and cultivars.......2003-11-15
Betsy Clebsch's New Book Of Salvias is a winner: it discusses the varied plants notable for their drought tolerance and beautiful flowers, and expands upon a prior edition in adding over fifty new species and cultivars. An alphabetical arrangement makes it easy for the gardener to locate the hybrid and species and includes botanical descriptions, habitat and blooming information, and background history.

Book Description
Home gardeners with a keen interest in design, as well as professional landscape designers, will find invaluable advice in this new approach. The book focuses on the general principles behind creating successful and beautiful plant combinations in both time and space-working with perennials in the context of trees, shrubs, and the surrounding landscape. The authors suggest looking across, into, and through the landscape. They ask the reader to consider the rhythms and connections in their designs, through such elements as echoes, linkages, and repetitions. More than just theory, Planting Design includes practical discussion of topics such as soil preparation, plant selection, and garden maintenance. Exceptional photographs show growth of a designed landscape over time, opening the gardener to new ways of seeing and thinking about their landscapes.
Customer Reviews:
A good book!.......2007-06-03
Planting Design is the most important aspect of landscape education and practice. It is also a subject that is very difficult to teach or to learn. This book can alleviate this problem. As the author of Planting Design Illustrated, I know how hard it is to do research and write a book on this subject.
In defense of a misunderstood book.......2006-10-26
As an admirer of Noel Kingsbury's prolific work, I was initially put off by this book. In some passages, it reads like a manifesto on a new approach to gardening. On futher reading, however, I have found it stimulating, valuable, and full of hard-to-find information on cutting edge work in ornamental gardening, particularly in Europe. Its emphasis on design of plantings for reduced maintenance in parks and public areas is not at all off point for the home gardener - certainly for this home gardener. I am 61, have only weekends for gardening, weekends often interrupted by other of life's demands, I garden on a difficult site with heavy wet clay and lots of deer. So any gardening approach that holds out a way to have a beautiful, sustainable garden, using plants suited to existing conditions, that I can create and maintain with minimal effort and time is certainly of value. Moreover, Kingsbury introduces me to some exciting names in gardening and to exciting gardens I've not known of: the work of Cassian Schmidt at Hermanshoff in Germany is only one example. This book is a window into a world of planting design and gardening that most of us have no access to (much of the published literature is in German) and Kingsbury brings it to light. I heartily recommend this book. It is a serious book, and gives more and more on successive readings. If your time is limited, you can reread sections that interest you and find more of value each time. I'm not sure what part Piet Oudolf actually played in this book, but he's certainly the preeminent practitioner of this style, and his apparently loose association with Kingsbury should continue. They are doing exciting work, and this book puts their work into a larger context and gives it a theoretical framework.
Disappointed, incredibly disappointed. .......2006-01-16
I would describe myself as a fan of Oudolf - by adopting and adapting some of his raison-être our own garden has changed beyond recognition, with masses of seasonal interest throughout the year. Kingsbury ghosted Oudolf's original work, Designing with Plants with some aplomb, Henk Gerritsen's turn of phrase in Dream Plants and More Dream Plants was always light, witty and insightful and while Gardening with Grasses seemed to bow to certain conventionalities, for European readers, the book opened up new vistas of possibilities. But with this offering the writers have run out of steam, or rather Kingsbury has as Oudolf appears to have participated little in the book's creation. This time Kingsbury's style is leaden - is the book a re-working of his recent thesis? It stinks of academia. Timber Press has done an excellent job re the images on the hard and dust cover (and this time all the pages are in the right order and the captions are all in English - not the case with my copies of previous work attributed to Oudolf that they have published). But as publishers they mislead in their suggestion that in this book `home gardeners ... will find invaluable advice in this new approach'. First of all the approach is not new, secondly the style is so leaden most would start to doze while reading it and thirdly not all home gardeners have the opportunity for creating public amenities for their community. For professionals the book may be of use but, as another reviewer has suggested, the narrative raises more questions than it answers, and the lists are short and somewhat mean.
Next time Oudolf's name appears on the cover of a new book I will wait until I get my hands on a copy so see what, if anything, is new and inspirational. In the meanwhile I will continue to use my dog-eared copies of previous work attributed to him which are well worth purchasing.
General Principles of "New Wave" planting.......2005-12-19
This book further elaborates and discusses the principles behind Piet Oudolf and Noel Kinsbury "New Wave" herbaceous perennial plantings. It is a general discussion for the serious gardner. Their intent is NOT to provide a step-by-step guide to designing, but suggest a "process" for key plant selection and combination. They are not located in North America, so you will find that some of their plant recommendations are difficult to find, or not specifically suited to your North America Plant Zone and no list can be casually taken from the book directly to your yard, but requires considerable effort on your part to identify those plants specific to your zone. For example, their list of 15 small trees to combine with perennials, only six might grow in my zone, I could not find 2 of those listed in my Sunset Western Garden Book, and 3 listed contradictory information to the Sunset Western Garden Book. So while their discussion of their "methods, discoveries and thoughts" are of interest, it will not easily transfer to a newly designed "new wave" perennial garden for the casual user.
Book Description
Advocates a new way of using perennials that works with rather than against nature.

Bring it Back.......2000-03-14
Perennial Gardening (American Garden Guides) is one of my favorite garden books. It is concise, accurate, extremely well illustrated, and does not confuse the reader with excessive information. I am a horticulturalist and the Head Grower for a 60 acre wholesale container nursery. I have been responsible for growing perennials for over 20years. Often I am ask to speak to retail customers or the general public. This is my most highly recommended book for people first starting to develop a perennial Garden.
Well organized and easy identification of plants........1999-04-08
I am on my 6th week with this book from my local library. I can't get enough. I have read many books and magazines and this book is well organized and has great clearity and easy access for plant descriptions. I highly recommend getting a copy from your library and checking it out for yourself. I hope these reviews will help bring this book back around for the gardeners who want a good book to add to their collection.
Very informative and easy to use........1998-08-07
I have this book and keep it handly for reference year round. It gets a lot of use in the spring & fall, when I need a quick brush up on what to move or divide and when. I have recommended this book to many of my gardening friends. I hope at least some of them got a copy. I know many more who want a copy.
Get this book back in print..........1997-12-27
Actually, I have't read this book because book stores don't carry it. It is out of stock and nobody can get it. I know it's a good book, though, because it is part of The American Gardening Guide series. I have the Annual Gardening book in this series and it is very well organized and informative. I would dearly love a copy of Perennial Gardening. I hope a book distributor will read this, and due to the fact that it just so happens they still have a copy in stock, they contact me at my email address below.

Book Description
Prominent Arab intellectuals of our century, Christian, Muslim, secularist and fundamentalist, consider the disregard for the rationalism of Averroes (Ibn Ruwd, 1126-1198), who once stirred Europe with his commentaries on Aristotle, to be a major reason for the decay of Islamic culture. They criticize both Islamic reform movements and mere westernization and try with Ibn Ruwd's help to spread critical, rational and realistic thinking, in order to place the Arabs on a cultural par with the West. This volume analyzes for the first time the different philosophical and historical approaches and social aims of authors like Farah Antun, Muhammad bAmmara, Muhammad al-gabiri, Hasan Hanafi and Tayyib Tizini within the framework of the Arabic reception of Ibn Ruwd since the end of the 19th century. This work was rewarded with the Ernst-Reuther-Preis for outstanding dissertations.
