Scottish Terrier Breeder & Judge's guide to this breed.......2000-04-29

This volume is officially approved by the Scottish Terrier Club of America, one of the oldest breed clubs (founded 1900). The book has a large amount of excellent color photographs throughout, as well as black and white photos of early champions. The history of the breed is examined in depth, the breed standard, sections on champions old and modern. Bloodlines of some of the major dogs are also examined. There is a complete chapter devoted to the professional handlers who have campaigned the Scottish Terrier in the show ring. The book also covers choosing a pup, some breeding information, and also some other unusual activites such as obedience (who says terriers aren't obedient! ) and there is even a wheaten scottie who has police training mentioned in this book! Mrs. Lee previously authored a book on raising and whelping puppies that is considered one the best books available on this subject. She has been active in this breed showing, breeding and judging in AKC conformation. The front cover of the book is very attractive with a plaid ribbion, the offical seal of the Scottish Terrier Club of America, and a large color photograph of Champion Blanart Bewitching. For anyone interested in the "diehard" this is THE indispensable book both in the detail in the text and the lush photography. There is a wealth of information for both the pet owner and the show enthusiast.

This is a great book for the beginning gardener, but does not provide much information or inspiration for anyone who already knows the basics.

Green Places in Small Places fills a void left by so many other gardening books. You've got a small place. It may be sunny, it may be dark. It may have soil it may have cement. It may even have people walking over it.But Kerwin Fischer will tell you how to make it a "green place." Green, pink, even blue.

Often using examples of a garden he voluntarily cared for in Manhattan, Mr.Fischer takes you from evaluating your space (chapter 1) through how to tend for your small green place through the seasons (Chapters 8-17).

The book is a welcome change from the many books that are often too "flowery" and abstract to help you get started. But the book does a good job of avoiding technical language (although it does provide a useful explanation of technical terms.)

Highly recommended.

A No-Bull Garden Book.......2001-03-13

This good is a clear step-by-step blueprint for creating a garden virtually anywhere. The author has a dry, ascerbic wit and is a great debunker of misconceptions about plants, as well as a bit of a plant historian. It's a really good read, as well as a really good manual.

Gardening, Not Design.......2001-01-25

Although a good book on planting a small garden this book is not, as I thought by its title, a book on designing small gardens. There are only two fairly complete gardens shown amidst the many beautiful pictures of plants. The book deals almost exclusivly with the planting and growing of flowers, primarily perennials, bulbs,has a chapter on houseplants and treats the subject of soil amendments, fertilizers and such. If you need to know what plants to use in your small garden, this book will help.

This is the most entertaining gardening book ever written........1999-09-15

This book makes me believe I can do anything in the garden. It's rare to pick up a "how-to" book that draws you in and and sounds personal. Green Places in Small Spaces is the antithesis of text book-type writing. This book is great, especially for a first time gardener, and one that doesn't have a lot of time or money to spend on gardening.

Lots of pretty projects and ideas.......2007-06-25

I think this book is great. It has over 600 photographs, and gives step-by-step directions for each container arrangement. It gives you a list of what plants you will need and what materials to gather, then, step-by-step (with photos to guide you) it tells you what to do. It covers a variety of different types of containers that you can use and how to make it work, how often it will need watering and care, insecticide use, etc..
Everything from window boxes, to hanging plants, to tubs, wicker baskets, terra cota, wooden planters, etc.. is covered. The photos are inspiring, and by following the instructions for a certain project, it gives you more chance of knowing what yours will look like once it takes root.
This is a great book.

Take the sentence part that says "it shows innovative ways to use old or discarded items as planting containers" look at the subtitle of the book "A practical guide to 100 inspirational containers" looks like it matches to me. A good book on it's chosen subject.

With the exception of a few projects, ie. shade loving ferns and trug of winter pansies, the book fails to provide a wide selection of beautiful floral arrangements. At best, it shows innovative ways to use old or discarded items as planting containers.

Reference this small but very useful book as a primer on container gardening from the very simple to the more elaborate. I've been gardening outdoors for more years than I'd care to admit but, potted plants were nothing I had really ever done. I'd buy hanging pots of Petuina or lantana and that would be that.
The Practical Guide to Container Gardening opened me up to a whole new way of thinking about potted plants!
EVERYTHING is covered from what kind of pots you can choose to what plants grow best in what light and space. How to care for your plants once they are in pots or need to be re-potted
This book is full of gorgeous photo's to give you great ideas and to show wonderful combinations you may not have thought of on your own!

Disappointed.......2002-06-19

Although beautifully illustrated, this book was a disappointment to me. I am a beginner when it comes to flowers and plants, and expected this title to have somewhat detailed information on how to actually take care of the plants, flowers, herbs and vegetables described therein, once they have been planted in a container. The book does not. Instead it provides somewhat general instructions on how to prepare a container for use with a plant, then shows how to arrange the plant in the container. After that, you're pretty much on your own.

Add to this the fact that this is a British publication. Not normally an issue, but in this case some of the terms and products used in the guide are unknown here in the US, and therefore it is not easy to follow the directions or understand what the author is trying to tell me to do.

Overall, it is a nice little volume if you already know a bit about gardening in general and just want some pointers on using containers. However, a beginner such as I will not benefit greatly from it. I'll probably return the book.

Excellent Resource for Balcony Gardens.......2002-03-14

Living in an apartment with only a balcony limits what one can grow. This book has beautiful ideas for such conditions and it is really well put together. The step by step instructions with pictures are excellent. Great book!

This is a great book for people interested in obtaining a great looking garden without being an expert. The use of photography and the step by step instructions make this book very easy to follow.

Not being a gardener myself I find that this book makes me want to give it a try. If I can do anybody can. Buy the book you won't be disappointed.
