Book Description

The most popular radio adventure show in history, The Lone Ranger held an audience of millions spellbound for over two decades. Key to its success was the music used on it-music rendered so beautifully, chosen with such delicate precision, that for half a century listeners have frantically searched for an answer to the question, "What was the music used on the Lone Ranger?" This book answers that question and many more, including, "Who performed it?" "Who recorded it?" "When?" "Where?". Set in Detroit, New York, Hollywood, and Mexico City against a backdrop of cliffhanging events that shaped the broadcasting industry, the story is as great an adventure as any heard on the show itself.

Reginald Jones has done scholarship a real service by uncovering the most minute details of the economic and physical circumstances behind the production of the haunting background music for "The Lone Ranger" radio and television series. This thoroughly researched book should be known by historians, film critics, literary theorists, and anyone who has ever wondered not only what that music was but why it sounded the way it did. A landmark wedding of devotion to a cause with meticulous archival study.

4 out of 5 stars AAAHAHAHAHHAHAHA!!!!.......2007-09-23

Ok, let me tell you first I read this book seeeveral years ago, but all I remember is I've probably never laughed so hard reading a book as this book made me. lOl! maybe I was young and laughed at simple things, but the assigned age group should fart and roll over on their butts laughing. Sorry for the crudeness though.

5 out of 5 stars I really liked the book.......2007-03-06

I thought that the book Who Was That Masked Man Anyway? by Avi was very, very good and I would recommend it. It was about a boy who loved radio so much that was all he could think about, so he did badly in school. He and his friend Mario Calvino go on "daring" adventures trying to get rid of a "public enemy" (also know as Mr. Swerdlow, the man who was renting out a room in his parents house). It was a very funny and enjoyable, and I think that is very good and I think that everyone should read it.

This book was very good bacause it has old shows and alot of oldies action .I like any thing that is like an old cartoon which I like anything that was made in made in the 1800's.That is why like this book and gave it four stars.

Genre: Non-Fiction
Three Sentence Summary: This book is about a kid who's brother is in Vietnam. He camoes home and has to stay in his brothers room. He tries to get him married and get the tenant to go away, so he could get his room back and talk to his friend.
What I liked most about the book: What I liked about this book is Frankie trying to get Mr. Watson out of his brothers room.
What I didn't laike and why: It doesn't tell the whole story, because at the end it just says that someone gets married and it doesn't tell what happened to Frankie's friend.
My favorite character and why: Frankie is my favorite character because he is funny and he's also kind of a fool because he doesn't think about the consequences.
The line that menat something to me and why: "Who was that masked man anyway," because the woman still couldn't figure out who he was.
What I would say about this book to someone else: Read it! it wil get you to predict what would happen next and it doesn't get you off guard. It goes in order.
One question I have after reading this book: What happened to Frankie and Mario.
My strongest reason for recommendation: It is interesting because it keeps you going, it makes you finish it and not put it away. It's addictive. It's suspensful.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2003-05-01

Incredible! Avi has outdone himself this time. Using old radio, old wars, and new minds to create a fun, adventurous novel. His funniest book ever. If you haven't read this book yet, you haven't seen Avi's best book next to "The Man Who Was Poe."

Clayton Moore was the actor who fixed a burning image in millions of baby boomer minds and whose TV character spawned uncountable little white suits, cowboy hats, and black masks on children all over the world. Moore portrayed "The Lone Ranger" in the original TV series between 1949 and 1957. He became a modern immortal with the signature tune of Rossini's "William Tell" overture and his catch line "Hi Yo Silver!" This biography, written with Frank Thompson, author of Lost Movies, details Moore's career before and after his years with Tonto (he began as a trapeze artist), sketches in his personal life (three marriages), and relates how his fans were outraged when, in 1979, Moore was legally forbidden to wear his famous mask in public appearances.

Book Description

Every baby boomer in America knows who that masked man was. He was mysterious and mythic at the same time, the epitome of the American hero: compassionate, honest, patriotic, inventive, an unswerving champion of justice and fair play.

5 out of 5 stars Ah the great memories........2007-03-09

I was a bigger fan of the Lone Ranger on radio than TV, but only because I was away in school most of the years it was on the tube and missed a great deal. That is something I am trying to make up as I collect DVDs and is why I bought this book. I have also known personally two who worked with Clayton Moore in the past, serial queen Kay Aldridge and former rodeo star Beverly McDermott. Everything they said about this man is echoed in the book. A very honest upright straight shooter. I am also impressed by his arguments as to why a star should set an example. So different in Hollyweird today. We need actors and actresses today who have the high moral standards this man has shown. May God bless him always, here and in Heaven.

5 out of 5 stars Hi Yo Silver, away!.......2007-02-09

This man, Clayton Moore WAS the Lone Ranger. I can say no more.

5 out of 5 stars must read.......2005-08-03

An in depth history of Clayton Moore. A very informative perpective of a bye-gone age in Hollywood. I really enjoyed this book. A must read for Lone Ranger and TV western fans.

5 out of 5 stars Lifelong fan.......2005-08-03

Like most of the others here, I'm a lifelong fan of the Lone Ranger, and Clayton Moore was my favorite Lone Ranger. I have a signed lithograph hanging in my living room.

I am also a huge fan of Hollywood biographies.

My biases being clear, I have to say that like everyone else, I loved Clayton Moore's story. He's a genuine good guy, has nice things to say about everyone he worked with, and always tried to find the good in people. People responded to him in kind, even in the days of hippie rebellion.

Clayton Moore's relationship with the character of the Lone Ranger is unique. He was typecast, but wanted to be typecast. After playing the Lone Ranger, it's the only character he ever wanted to play. Even Jay Silverheels had no intention of being Tonto forever. Moore spent the rest of his life going to schools, shopping malls, etc., portraying either the Lone Ranger or portraying himself as the Lone Ranger. He spent the rest of his life trying to embody the Ranger Creed. No other actor was as closely tied to a character as was Moore. Even his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame says both Clayton Moore and the Lone Ranger.

Even the stories of being fired for Season 3 of the TV show, being called back for Season 4, and the legal wrangling over the use of the mask were downplayed in favor of discussing his relationship with his fans, some of whom he met at both 5 and 50 years of age. His comment? The adoration in their eyes for the Lone Ranger was the same at any age.

If you were ever a fan of the show, the photos alone are worth the price of the book.

Also, if you need large print books, the print in this edition is quite large. No need to look for a large print edition.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful and kind individual.......2005-03-07

Claytom Moore had to be one of the most gentle men that I have ever known. He believed in The Lone Ranger and he lived by the values, and the code that his image stood for. I am proud to say that I have one of the few copies of this book that was autographed by this wonderful man.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT HISTORY OF THE MASKED MAN!.......2001-01-30

I first aquired this book about 20 years ago. I have always been a Lone Rnager fan, and when I found this book, I was completely thrilled. David Rothel has done a wonderful job in getting the facts about the Origin of our beloved hero. The interviews Mr Rothel did with the likes of Jim Jewel, George Trendle, and so many others who were involved with the creation of this great character, provide the reader with first hand information on how the Lone Ranger came to be. The pictures in this book show the begining of the radio show in a makeshift studio, to the television years to the big screen. The background information on how it was all done, keeps you wanting to go on for more. The detailed explanations of where Kemosabe came from, the origin of the Lone Ranger Creed, and much more, lend to some fasinating reading. This book tells it all for the devoted Lone Ranger fan. I am lucky enough to not only have this book, but to have it autographed by John Hart and Clayton Moore. If you are a fan of this great American Legend, try to get a copy of this book. You will be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars The return of the William Tell Overture.......2005-05-01

Everyone thinks of the Lone Ranger when they hear the William Tell Overture, but that long-running radio show used lots of other classical music, and other music including some from a 1938 movie serial about the masked man, during its long run and eventual move to television. Now readers can find out what all that music was, its sources, and how it wound up in a western adventure show. The author has done yeoman research in recreating this history of a radio classic.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful musical archaeology.......2003-10-24

This book is a quite pleasant surprise. It's written in a folksy, conversational style, befitting its less-than-earthshaking subject. However, Jones' research into the origins of the Lone Ranger Mood Music Library seems of consistently high caliber. His encyclopedic knowledge of the romantic composers rivals that of the dedicated staff that assembled this wonderful conglomeration of memorable themes which introduced so many young people (including me) to the magical world of classical music.

An added bonus is the insider's view of the epic 1940's battle between ASCAP and BMI. That struggle nearly deprived us of a large part of America's musical heritage. The current controversy over unauthorized music downloads seems trivial by comparison.

4 out of 5 stars Iron Masks and Templars.......2004-05-15

This is a novel of ideas, an attempt to unveil the man in the iron mask by means of fiction. The story is told in the first person by a fictional Englishman named Ralph Croft who by a series of incidents ends up in the Bastille sentenced to death shortly after the death of Louis XIV, i.e, after 1715. Instead of being executed, however, he is given a chance to earn a pardon by helping the Regent, Louis XIV's nephew who governed France in the name of the child-king Louis XV, who wants to know the identity of the man in the iron mask.

Croft is assisted by two men, Captain Estivet and a man named Maurepas who we discover has links to a secret organization descended from the Knights Templar that plots to overthrow the French monarchy. Croft has been selected for this task because he is an expert forger and can identify forged documents. He also has contacts in the Paris underworld.

Historical note: Rumors that a prisoner was being held who wore a mask may have begun circulating as early as 1687 in France. The first certifiable document we have dates from October 1711 when the Regent's mother writes two letters to her cousin about these rumors saying that the prisoner had died shortly before and that he was an English milord. This rumor gained a life of its own with all manner of speculation as to the identity of the prisoner. Was he the king's twin brother? Half-brother? A close relative? Was he some other wellknown personality? Was he someone who looked like the king? Or someone who had doublecrossed Louis XIV in some unforgivable way?

Doherty packs as many of the theories as he can in a novel of less than 180 pages. I'll let the reader discover which theory Croft comes to believe. Doherty introduces the novel by stating that he has decoded a love letter that might reveal the truth about this prisoner's identity and he has included his solution in the novel.

The best non-fiction account in English in John Noone's The Man Behind the Iron Mask. The best book of all is Jean-Christian Petitfils' Le Masque de fer. Both men agree on the identity of this mysterious prisoner and they do not agree with Doherty. Petitfils includes a list of all the theories of the identity of this person and where they have appeared in books and literature over the last 300 years. Doherty has picked a theory that has been around for a long time.

This book includes sword fights, meetings with powerful criminal lords, meetings with powerful lords and officials, and a meeting of the mysterious Templar organization. Shades of the Da Vinci code, except that this powerful organization does not call itself the Priory of Sion.

    Book Description

The sestina is a traditional poetic form that has enjoyed a recent surge in popularity, which promises to expand further with this witty illustrated cycle of poems. Casting themselves as poetic superheroes, authors Jim and Dave take on Osama Bin Laden and various other rogues and luminaries, defeating the “Masked Man” in the end to the cheering of appreciative crowds at the "sestina bar." As the two sestina-meisters take turns writing individual poems (and collaborating on one together), the mild-mannered bespectacled lad and the dashing superhero that coexist inside both Cummins and Lehman rescue the form from the clutches of everyday life and transform it into something fantastic. In this ambitious work, even the table of contents is written in sestina form. Adding to the fun are 39 vivid illustrations by Archie Rand and cameo appearances by Marvin Bell, Anne Sexton, Walt Whitman, Ted Berrigan, Gary Snyder, Arthur Rimbaud, Grace Paley, and others.

1 out of 5 stars Great Title, Very Disappointing Poems.......2006-02-04

There are amazing illustrations in this little book. It's disappointing the poem sequence gets tired so quickly. This is an incredibly well-produced looking book whose poems would have been better-served in a chapbook. Lehman and Cummins' offerings are very forgettable and not much fun or funny--what a disappointment. Soft Skull press skimps on books by young poets like Danielle Pafunda and Jennifer L. Knox and does a first-class job producing a book of throw away poems here. What a waste.

              Book Description

Thanks to the extraordinary photographs and gardening wisdom in this classic book, the elegant intimacy of the English cottage garden is a practical possibility for amateur gardeners in diverse regions of the United States. The author has analyzed the aesthetic and horticultural elements in ten representative cottage gardens--eight in England and two in the United States. Her spectacular photographs render the look and atmosphere of these gardens, while her text focuses on easily grown, readily available plants that are adaptable to a wide variety of climatic and soil conditions. In the back of the book--completely updated for this new edition--may be found specific horticultural information on a wide variety of cottage garden plants commonly available in the United States, glossaries of Latin and common names, and a list of sources for old rose varieties. The gardens in this beautiful book are not those of the great estates of England, manicured by staffs of professional gardeners. They are, instead, labors of love on the part of individual homeowners, many of whom started with bleak, rubble-strewn lots and went on to create the enchanted settings pictured here.

              4 out of 5 stars Sacred Gardens............2000-12-31

THE ENGLISH FLOWER GARDEN by William Robinson, was first published in 1883 and republished a number of times afterward. The current version available from Amazon is a reprint of the 15th Edition Robinson edited shortly before he died in the 1930s. This new reprint of the 15th Edition contains the "Botanical Revisions" prepared by Graham Stuart Thomas for the 1984 Edition, as well as a Forward by Henry Mitchell, and an introduction by Deborah Nevins.

The book is set in old style type and contains numerous black and white illustrations--etchings of photos and prints of sketches. Some of them are a bit grainy, but many are not, and even the grainy ones have their good points. The content of each photo is quite interesting, and the sketches provide the "personal" touch one seldom sees in text books these days.

In one print, taken at Gravetye Manor over 100 years ago, a climbing tea rose clings to a bamboo split-rail post fence surrounded by bush roses. The sunlight reflects from the walkway and warms the flowers and a huge clay pot sitting in a corner. In another photo, pots of 'Chimney Campanula' guard an old Jacobin chest sitting in a hall at Staunton Court. Sketches and photos are used to illustrate flowers all through the last half of the book--a flower dictionary with anectdotal and literary "blurbs" written by Robinson himself.

Mitchell says Robinson "for all practical purposes invented gardening as we know it." Robinson's garden, 'Gravetye Manor' is a hop, skip and a jump from Sissinghurst, but few know of it's existence. Yet, Robinson is the "grandfather" of Sissinghurst, because Gertrude Jekyll who helped Mrs. Nichols design Sissinghurst, was Robinson's disciple. She literally followed in his footsteps and emulated his style.

Robinson found most of the gardens of his day deplorable (19th Century Victorian). Those of the wealthy were modeled after the French and Italian formal plan, loaded with clipped Yews and bedded out every spring with ribbons of color provided by geraniums and marigolds. The walkways were lined with ornate scupture and surrounded by towering "imprisoned" evergreen shrubs and trees including clipped Yews which he loathed. He said these gardens reminded him of graveyards.

His ideal was the cottage garden. He considered the garden a sacred space. He said one had to visit the houses of the poor to find truly beautiful gardens. Henry Mitchell reflecting on this says, "The thing that separates the true gardener from the mere architect or designer (and there is something extremely suspicious in the airs they give themselves nowadays) is that the gardener stands in awe before his violets, while others think of them in terms of [sic] plant materials."

Robinson's ideas grew out of the Romantic movement of the late 18th and early 19th Century. His designs and thinking were reflected in the Arts and Crafts movement based on the importance of reconnecting to nature. His contemporaries in thinking were Ruskin, Morris, Stickly, Frank Lloyd Wright, and others we identify with this movement. If you're a Stickly, cantilevered, picturesque kind of person, you'll like this book.

With a decided emphasis on cozy country charm, The English Country Cottage explores 25 delightful old cottages that have been updated with all the comforts of modern life and yet manage to retain much of their period flavor. Even the names ring with the unmistakable sound of the quaint English countryside: Smuggler's Haunt, Mustard Pot Hall, Wealden Close, Rose Cottage. Most are relatively traditional, though no less appealing, with lots of plump chintz cushions, botanical prints, nautical themes, pleasantly weathered furnishings, and hutches overflowing with crockery. But a few are refreshingly different, such as the vibrantly hued Cider-House Cottage, where the owner painted fanciful designs all over each room to warm the cold look of the stone walls, or Folly Cottage, with its bright red walls and many Gothic accents. The clear photographs display plenty of good ideas for mimicking the style, but by and large readers must extract these ideas themselves since the text focuses much more on examining these particular cottages (what renovations were needed to make the old structures livable today; descriptions of garden designs or color scheme choices) than on analyzing the key design elements or explaining how to re-create the specific effects. --Amy Handy

This truly delightful book shows cottage interiors that reflect the pasttimes, habits, and way of living that one likes to believe are essentially "English". These homes look as if they are actually lived in and all exhibit that special British propensity for comfort blended with eccentricity. The ubiquitous Aga is featured in a number of the kitchens, but there are also enough 'jolts' in the form of colour use and collections to make this book memorable and somehow fresh. A book I refer to again and again and well worth adding to your collection - almost a reference on English cottage style. Very good value.

              Book Description

An intricate mix of beauty, utility, wildness, and domestication: that's the quintessential British garden. From its medieval beginnings as a yard for livestock and vegetables, the cottage garden became a retreat for the gentry of the 17th century, and then took on a new dimension of sophistication--though it never relinquished its original functional roots. Take a tour through rows of medicinal herbs, topiary, woodland, meadow flowers, and even exotic species. A lovely and inspiring tribute to a classic form of planting.

I went to England for the first time and loved the countryside! It is so vibrant. My own photographs have never turned out very well so I bought this book while I was there to capture the England that I fell in love with. It has a wide range of beautifully photographed cottages and gardens. I am online buying 2 more copies as gifts for friends.

                Product Description

This charming book of hand-colored papercuts is guaranteed to delight gardeners young and old, active and armchair. It is a delicious garden alphabet, a convention as old as the sixteenth century, but one that seems to lend itself especially well to the advantages of high relief, gaily-colored papercuts.

In this vivid garden, where A is for Arbor and Z is for Zucchini, artist Wisnewski brings her talents to bear not only on flowers, shrubs, herbs, and fruit, but also on the resident fauna: bees and cats, children, dogs, and rabbits. The result is no static florilegium, but a witty and whimsical beehive of various and charming activity.

It's not often I review older books but once in a while the quality is such that I break my own rule. (I'm not sure whether that makes me flexible, whimsical or inconsistent. Whatever.) Anne Scott-James writes such lovely smooth prose. It's not at all pretentious; it's easy to read and her words envelop her topic like a comfortable blanket.

She is knowledgeable. She has a lifetime of cottage gardening to draw on and understands the topic right through to her bones. She has also done a generous amount of research into the history of the cottage garden and these together give the book a depth that is seldom found.

So this book, that so easily could be cloyingly sentimental, is actually a historical record of the development of the cottage garden in England. Starting with medieval times the writer shows how a "garden" of a few herbs used for medicinal purposes, together with a few fruit trees grew to become, by Victorian times, a corner of the most idyllic land in all the world. The Victorian cottage garden was unabashedly sentimentalized by poets and artists who would have you believe that the flowers were always blooming and the family was always content. This disguises the truth that a labourers plot of land had to supply vegetables and fruit enough to feed his family, with perhaps a few left over for sale, as well as producing flowers. But the flowers could help the family budget too. As one old man put it "We sold so many bunches of snowdrops in spring that they paid the rates". ("Rates" are local taxes.)

I found this a delightful read and it added a lot to my knowledge of cottage gardening. This book will be appreciated by anyone who is interested in the English cottage style of gardening or in the history of gardens in England.

In Margery Fish's imaginative adaptation of the traditional cottage garden style that she saw disappearing around her, she brought together old-fashioned plants and contemporary plants in the same vein. Today's mixed borders are a direct descendant of the style Margery Fish created at East Lambrook Manor in Somerset - now once again open to the public. Cottage Garden Flowers covers plants that grow easily and naturally, including easy, adaptable bulbs, perennials and shrubs, such as Astrantia, columbines, daffodils, daisies, Dianthus, foxgloves, hollyhocks, Japonica, old roses, Phlox, Primula or Virburnum.

I borrowed this book from the library and would love a copy of it. Reading this book is like sitting with a favourite Aunt discussing gardening. Her descriptions of flowers are at times hilarious and always filled with useful information. She lists a lot of the "old" flowers. The ones to watch for and beg from any gardener who might be willing to part with them.
