4 out of 5 stars Less than perfect book for an intermediate to advanced rider.......2003-01-27

This book would be great for someone just starting out riding, and having "issues" that need solving. The book is packed with pictures and accompanying descriptions. It covers basic flat work and jumping. A wide variety of rider error is covered in this book, and might be useful for an instructor as a schooling guide.

This book does not cover more detailed dressage moves, or more complicated manoevers like multiple jumps. If you are looking for a solution to fix a horse that is counter-flexing or rushing fences on a course, this is not the book for you. It's a good book, but not as useful for an experienced rider.

5 out of 5 stars Now I Know why I have Difficulty With............2002-07-21

I was born saying "horse" & among diverse interests, a Graduate of the former Riding Acadamy that Susan Harris was director of as an Instructor in "Balance Seat" I am also a nurse in Family Practice & both student & practioner of several "alternative medicine modialities" in accupressure, trigger point release, Theraputic Touch . As I began to see different body types of people coming as patients in our office & to me I noticed a pattern of other problems that would show elsewhere from where an initial injury would occur;known as compensatory injuries & as a believer in form to function in all creatures I found myself being able to instruct a patient of what my also result from the injury & prevention. This book takes this concept onto the horse & clearly explains why some riders find ease & difficulty w/ aspects of riding . I also gives Instructor & rider insight into how to cope w/ rider's conformation & honest expectations of how much physical challanges & capabilities for different body types to riding disiplines . 5 out of 5 stars How you can ride better - depending on your figure.......2001-10-31

I like the back views of riders - some tall, some short, some fat, some thin - these are used to give you suggestions on how you can improve your riding. So don't worry if you don't look like an Olympic champion with perfect legs!

The book has many photographs (some in color) that show typical riding faults and how to correct them.

There are some really good suggestions for off-the-horse exercises. This book is ideal for adults getting back into English(as opposed to Western) riding - especially if you rode when you were so small that the only way to grip was with your knees (not the way to ride!). It covers really basic information - like how to find an instructor and a riding school. It covers walking, trotting, cantering and jumping. There is a very informative chapter for the nervous rider.

I keep going back to this book before and after each lesson. Its a good basic book but will only be useful to those who practise what it preaches.

5 out of 5 stars A well written, helpful book........1999-12-07

This is a great book with beautiful color pictures throughout. It is helpful especially for adults, but good for anyone who is involved in riding. It is nice to know the problems we face are commonplace for many other people, and the author gently shows us how to correct them. Great information about human and equine bodies as well. Lots of helpful advice, and did I mention beautiful pictures?

5 out of 5 stars A great addition to anyone's riding library.......1998-07-04

As a rider who took up the sport at 33-and who sometimes feels overwhelmed with all there is to know and master in riding, I was delighted with this book. The british authors have a wonderfully down-to-earth approach, and there is no sense of the "elitism" one sometimes finds in american riding books. Great discussions of common problems, and very helpful solutions offered. I think it should be in every adult beginner's library.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars fantastic book.......2003-11-12

This is one of my absolutely favorite horse training books. I have used it as I have moved from hunter shows to dressage. I love the fact that it deals specifically with problems. You find the problem in the book and she discusses the symptoms and the treatment. It is a great book. I recommend it for hunters, jumpers, cross country and dressage riders.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book.......2003-02-16

This is a great book. A good training guide with traditional methods, but one that works well with today's enlightened horsemanship. This is one of the few training books (for both horse and rider) that I would spend money on a second time.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2000-08-09

This is a very practical and useful book. It begins with a program for training the horse. Then it states problems and provides solutions that go back to the basics covered in the training program. I found it clear and easy to use. So many books have pretty pictures but don't really get to the meat of the problem.

5 out of 5 stars An out of print gem.......2006-05-06

Jane Thelwall's book has been with me for almost two decades and has stood the test of time with many horses. Right now it has helped me a lot with a TB who was once a lesson horse and has learned many a bad habit of evading the bit by being behind or leaning. What to do? Consult Jane Thelwall!

If you have a problem in dressage, jumping or flatwork, she can guide you to where and why your horse is having issues. Not only the why but also how to correct it - which sadly many horse "training" books on the market today don't seem to convey. She gives the how-to basics of training a horse (briefly) and then quickly moves into a summary of problems for each sport (dressage, showjumping, cross-country, and steeplechase). Her advice is sound, practical and applicable. No quick fixes but she does state the correct use and when to use it of equipment for training.

I don't know what Jane does today but I hope she knows that her book DESERVES to be back in print!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous book for hobby people.......2004-01-07

This is a great book for hobby people. If you don't have time to go to lots of clinics and spend lots of time around horse people and trainers. A basic book that shows you how to train and live with your horse.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent specific trainig examples and fixes.......1999-10-26

I am a hunter-jumper and I even liked this 3-day eventers book. It is well organized and easy to follow.

This book represents the ultimate Hawaiian experience and art form: the Hula, through photographs taken in the 1880s and 1890s. These images were gathered by the last reigning monarch of Hawaii, Queen Liliuokalani (1839 -1917), who reigned from 1891 until 1893, and were presented in an album to her personal nurse as a token of her Aloha. For the most part, the photographs were previously unknown and unpublished, and represent some of the most powerful and poignant images of Hula known to exist. Several non-Hula images are among the photos, adding interest to the albums contents. A brief history of the Queens fascinating life is included. Anyone who has felt the magic of Hawaiian Hula will enjoy this unusual book.

      Book Description

Here's a beautifully illustrated volume making it possible for apartment or condo dwellers, or those with only a small plot of land, a deck, pathway, or even a rooftop to create a garden in a small space. A creative and practical sourcebook of innovative ideas and simple techniques for transforming a limited space into a gardening oasis.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Container gardeners beware........2003-03-02

Several things turned me off about the book. First, it's seems very British for some reason. Second, it goes in to pages and pages and pages of assessing your situation, whether you are a blind gardener, "the importance of design", then gets into water gardens and water features, and raised beds. Suffice it to say that it didn't seem very geared toward the apartment owner with a 7x10 foot balcony!

It's not there isn't useful information in this book, but it's about plants in general, though. This is not totally geared toward the container gardener. I guess that's said in the subtitle: Creating gardens on patios, balconies, terraces, AND IN OTHER SMALL SPACES. About 85 pages into the book, about types of hanging baskets, window boxes and other containers. Then it gets into container design where you choose compatible plant partnerships. But even here there's a little trouble, because the illustrations show plants that are NOT IN CONTAINERS but in a garden setting. From there you get into soils, how to propagate the plants, how to control pests (suggests picking off caterpillars will do...ewwww!),

I needed more from this book. I needed a book on containers and tha plants that grow well in them. One that talked about a wide variety of plants, especially those that grow well in my zone. I could care less about the parts of a plant and stuff I had in biology. In the very back, where it talks about "lack of space makes this plant list no more than a suggestion." Well, if they hadn't filled it with [stuff] what was off-topic, there may well have been room to discuss more plants. The main problem with this book, in my opinion, is that it lacks focus.

Bottom line, I guess it depends on what you need out of this book. This book works well as a general plant care reference book, but if you need a book specifically on the special needs of plants in containers, I'd try another book. One that was more helpful to me, and one which I consider my own personal bible as far as container plants goes, is called Container Plants for Patios, Balconies, and Window Boxes by Halina Heitz, published by Barron's. I have plumbagos, and while there's no mention of them in the No-Garden Gardener, you'll find useful references to them there.

5 out of 5 stars Black thumbs be gone!.......2000-04-25

This is probably not a book for more experienced gardeners... but luckily I'm not. The writing on the design aspect of the non-garden seems common sense (and it is), but the book is a real treasure for the beginning gardener and those of us who just have two left thumbs. This is because it includes basic guides on such diverse topics as: plant biology, planting (from rock gardens to hanging plants), caring for the plant, propagation and pest control. Guides to planting and plant maintenance include diagrams and step-by-step instruction for easy use. The book's best feature though is its lovely photography; the photos are intended to inspire the reader with ideas about the design of their no-garden garden.

3 out of 5 stars For large roofs mainly.......2006-02-23

Interesting, but mainly specialized to larger roof garden. Therefore less suitable for a relatively smaal balcony

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, contained gardens - and more.......2000-05-14

This beautiful book is helpful in answering some design conundrums which comparable books do not tackle nearly as elegantly. (How to grow a lot of plants in a small space without creating a traffic jam -- for example.) There are photos of thrilling small garden spaces which - refreshingly - can actually be replicated fairly easily. It's a great book to drool over, but also a true reference; a good combination.

3 out of 5 stars a pretty good book for general information........1999-11-10

the pictures in this book are amazing, although for the project i was working on, i found it lacking where it covered roofotp gardening. it seemed to be too general to give very accurate information for what i needed.

The book, written by an elderly lady, is quite to the point and gives very practical advices. The photographs are not too glossy but give a good inpression what roof gardening is all about.

4 out of 5 stars Four stars for text, two stars for photos............2006-01-22

BALCONY, TERRACE AND PATIO GARDENING is a friendly little book filled with observations about the "change" in life, when one must, alas, abandon the larger garden and cultivate an appreciation of horticulture on a much smaller scale. Although Margaret Davis is writing from the perspective of one who has had much experience in larger areas and her target audience is the retired individual like herself who faces this prospect of downsizing, her discovery of the positive aspects of working in a reduced space such as a balcony or townhouse lot are relevant to younger folks who find themselves in similar circumstances with desire to grow favorite plants they knew as children.

Ms Davis understands that some of the most difficult aspects of balcony gardening will probably be wind control, equipment storage, and perhaps, if you are located within the 10 feet or so near the ground, pests. However, if you are fortunate enough to have some sunlight you can grow a variety of sun-lovers such as roses and various herbs. Bougainvilla might work if the climate is warm enough and Camillas will thrive in shade. Hanging baskets are a must, and vegetables are not outside the realm of possibility. Ms Davis is thrilled with citrus trees, but I have only managed to kill them. She also says walls have great potential for trellises that can act as plant supports.

The downside of this book is that it is not well illustrated. The text is dotted with very small black and white photos, and the publishers included a small section of color plates in the center of the book, but other than cryptic notes such as "window view" "Chrysanthemum bonsai in Tokyo" the pictures are not terribly well captioned. Some of them are beautiful, like the photo of the fuchia growing on a patio table. The best shot was placed on the cover and shows an actual composition. Buy this book for Ms Davis narrative which is friendly and unassuming.

Not everyone has the extra space for a full-sized garden, but that doesn't mean the quiet joys of working with the soil and nurturing plants are out of reach. Colorful Containers is precisely the book for anyone, beginners and experts alike, seeking to add a natural touch to a confined space such as a patio or terrace. The authors write, "It is amazing how you can conjure up different and very individual atmospheres by using simple materials and carefully selected plants ... even a small balcony can offer a link with the colorful world of plants." The book wisely offers separate chapters focusing on the different levels of light a container gardener might have available, with helpful hints on selecting plants that thrive in full or partial sun, and even complete shade. Additional sections offer advice on choosing between the many different types of containers, how to arrange plants creatively in various settings, and what's required to keep container gardens looking attractive throughout all four seasons. The detailed text is supported by hundreds of color photos, providing a surprisingly abundant yield of information on this relatively small subject. --George Laney
