5 out of 5 stars The Bible of Cat Care.......2007-03-01

The title says it all. If you're not a vet, this is the next best thing, to help you know what to ask your vet when your cat has problems. Also is great for minor aliments and first aid.

5 out of 5 stars Always an Important Book.......2007-02-23

This copy I bought for our local non for profit shelter. I have purchased at least 10 copies of this book. It is written in a matter that both the professional and the pet owner can understand. It proofs to be most valuable for a cat owner. Educates and helps the cat owner understand both health, anatomy and illness in a cat. Also, valuable when you bring your cat home to understand "just what did the vet say?"

5 out of 5 stars A must-have source to start with.......2007-02-12

I disagree with readers who say that the book is too general or out-of-date. It's a BOOK, not an article in a scientific journal.

That said, I also disagree with readers who say that it's too complicated. I believe that it's an important book for any responsible cat owner to have on the shelf. If you're worried but aren't sure whether something is an emergency or not, you can check here before making a midnight call to the vet or racing to the emergency clinic. If your vet tells you that a condition is suspected or diagnosed, it's a great reference to start to learn more about it, or to help you formulate questions for your vet. No, it's not a replacement for a visit to a vet, but it's a help.

Remember how every new parent read Dr. Spock's book 40 years ago? Well, I see this in the same light. A MUST for cat owners that provides information, helps allay fears, and guides you. If you have a serious question, it gives you the right technical terms to do more research. If you don't remember all of the details that you heard at the vet's, you can use it as a refresher.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable........2004-06-20

"A cat is only technically an animal, being divine." - Robert Lynd.

"The twenty-first century may be the century of the cat," says Franklin M. Loew, former Dean of Cornell University's renowned College of Veterinary Medicine in this book's preface, citing statistics according to which even at the end of the 20th century, the number of cats in the United States alone already equaled that of the entire human population of Europe (and with sinking birth rates among humans, it is not hard to guess where that particular trend is headed in the near and midterm future).

Authored by the staff of Cornell's Feline Health Center, "The Cornell Book of Cats" is an indispensable reference guide for every cat owner who cares about his or her feline companion(s). The book provides detailed coverage on every aspect of feline life, from the cats' origin and breeds to cat (mis-)behavior, nutrition, anatomy, reproduction and all major instances of disease and infirmity. Particular attention is given to kittens, aging cats, skin and sensory disorders, internal disorders and medical emergencies. While the explanations do rely on a number of medical/veterinary terms, they are generally clear, comprehensive and easy to understand; in addition, most of the veterinary terminology is defined in a 22-page glossary at the end of the book. Numerous figures, tables, sketches, statistics and photos further illustrate the text; and treatment suggestions are provided for all diseases and disorders described. As the authors point out, this book is *not* intended to make a visit to the vet unnecessary in each and every instance (and sometimes, the remedies suggested here are only the beginning of the path to complete treatment) - but the book does help a cat owner determine when the often not inconsiderable expense of a visit to the vet is truly warranted. Moreover, it is a tremendous supplementary resource to even the best vet's recommendations, and it provides a wealth of background information on our four-pawed friends. Highly recommended.

"A house without a cat, and a well-fed, well-petted and properly revered cat, may be perfect house, perhaps, but how can it prove its title?" - Mark Twain.

2 out of 5 stars More of a reference book for a vet.......2004-02-03

I just purchased this book and was disappointed. It is really more for a reference book that a vet might have or if your cat has already been diagnosed, you could look up the diseases to get a bit more of an understanding. If you are looking for a book on how to treat and understand your sick cat, this is not the book for you.

For instance, there is one reference if you try to look up HAIRBALL, and it tells you nothing...no information you could actually use. Basically, it's a dictionary and nothing more.

I do not recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars Needs to Be Updated.......2005-01-31

While there is solid medical information here, the information on cat "training" or behavior modification is appallingly outdated. The author states "most cats respond to punishment" and advocates "a spank on the rump as a last resort." Times have changed, and so have behavior modification methods when it comes to felines. Also, very little information was offered on cat psychology or behavior, which if the cat owner is not aware of can lead to unnecessary surrenders to cat shelters when the problem behavior could be modified. This may have been a good cat reference book at one time, but that time has long passed. It needs a lot of updating.

5 out of 5 stars Real Substance.......2002-09-08

Looking for a reliable and helpful reference in caring for my pets, I have looked at and rejected many, many books published for the general public on dog and cat care. Most of them are so general in approach as to be next to useless.

Dr. McGinnis' "Well Dog Book" and "Well Cat Book" are just fabulous. Every line contains meaty, solid, specific information that lets us do our best for our loving, trusting animals. Dr. McGinnis demonstrates respect not only for animals but for their guardians, too.

I have bought many copies of both books and given them to friends, family, and animal shelters. These books went out of print but now apparently they are in a new printing! I'm not surprised -- they are really worthwhile. If you can find a copy anywhere at almost any price, it's worth it!!

This book has been helpful so many times... I'd like to share the most dramatic. Our diabetic cat stopped eating (he usually has a great appetite), began vomiting, and stopped using the litter box. Of course, especially with a diabetic, these symptoms can mean serious problems.

I looked in the "Well Cat Book," and found several very helpful listings in the index (when was the last time you actually found something in an index, and easily?), one of which was that it might be a hair ball.

I took the cat immediately to the veterinarian, who mentioned several diabetes-related possible causes, such as kidney or liver problem, etc. When, thanks to what I'd read in the "Well Cat Book," I wondered aloud whether it might be a hairball, he immediately asked his assistant to x-ray the cat, and sure enough! -- that's what it was. It had entered the intestines and caused a blockage. They expelled the hair ball and the cat was fine.

If it hadn't been for Dr. McGinnis' "Well Cat Book," the poor cat would have gone through many unnecessary procedures, and would have been given unnecessary medications, with unnecessary effects on his body and doubtless getting his diabetes out of control (and the stress on his body of that).

Thank you so much, Dr. McGinnis!

5 out of 5 stars a *must have* book if you care about your cats.......2001-02-20

still use my original 1975 edition that was bought that year, but have seen this re-issue and am glad it is back in print... it is a *must have*. over 21 years, 'the well cat book' has been the saving grace for more cats than i can remember; housepets who needed general care on up to rescuing farm cats that were involved in serious accidents (if you're not the squeamish sort)... most people don't end up in such situations, but the needed information is there.

for the average housecat owner, you will be pleasantly suprised about how much time and $$$ will be saved at the vet on tests/ diagnostics because of the clear, common-sense and descriptive information dr. mcginnis provides.

the really *big* bonus is a *healthy and long life* for your purry companion thanks to all the information about diet and general daily home care!

5 out of 5 stars Still have the original from 1975 (book not cat).......2000-07-03

I have ordered a new copy to make sure that cat design has not changed. People stuff has. We went from putting butter on burns to putting ice on burns. I want to know if I can still put my cat in ice water for heat stroke. So far the occasion has not come up. However I am starting to suspect that cats can read. Every time I pick up the book, the cats run under the bead. My copy does not say much about thyroid disorders. However I find that this is right up there with urinary disorders except more deadly. The best cure is irradiation. However many cats are too old or fragile so they get daily doses of metimazole. I had one that lasted five years on it. The book did tell me how to choose the vet that detected the problem just in time. Now I have a new batch of cats and the latest designer problem is polyps. Evidently there is not very much information on them.

Bottom line is that if you are going to just gat one book or are just starting out then this is the book for you,

5 out of 5 stars The best cat care book I've ever used........1999-02-18

I have used this book for 21 years, having had the same number of cats over those years. I was able to determine if I could do at-home treatment or they needed a vet. Excellent reference, information is easily found and very clear. Highly recommended by "Phisty", et al.

Written by James McKay with contributions from a team of consulting animal care specialists, Comprehensive Health Care for Cats covers everything from the fundamentals of emergency first aid treatment to flea spraying. What really separates this guide from the rest is its ease of use. The book offers a tremendous amount of medical information, but presents it in a manner that is easy to read and understand. Paragraphs are kept short and to the point, with large print headlines helping your eyes to easily scan the page for pertinent information in an emergency situation.

Every disease description includes symptoms, underlying causes, owner action, medical treatment, expected cost of care, and a useful urgency indicator, which is a small colored box that informs you whether a veterinarian should be seen immediately, soon, or not at all. The inclusion of the approximate costs involved in each treatment is an unusual addition and one that can help with planning when you're confronted with a potentially serious illness. In Comprehensive Health Care for Cats, you'll find the information you need to feel secure in the face of any health problem that may arise in your kitty. The veterinarian is sure to thank you, even if the cat, as always, takes you for granted. --Jill Lightner

This book was used by my plant propagation teacher while I was at the university. It explains the basic principles of plant propagation in detail. All the information is back-up by scientific data. Very good for the professional grower or a plant science student; not very appropriate for the common gardener.

A very informative book with many examples of plant species and their specific propagation requirements. Very detailed but also useful for the beginning propagationist. Great chapters on tissue culture.

                          Book Description

Fast-growing eucalypts help to meet the demand for wood throughout the warmer parts of the world. They are grown in numerous small woods and windbreaks to produce poles and firewood, and in extensive plantations mainly for the pulp and paper industries. This book shows how to breed improved eucalypts that will provide more and better wood on appropriate sites selected through sound land planning. The emphasis is on making greater use of the immense richness of the genetic resources of the eucalypts, especially in the first generation or two of domestication 'wild' eucalypts for wood production. This book covers those aspects of variation, selection, and reproduction that are unique to eucalypts. Large gains in production and quality can be obtained relatively cheaply by choosing the best geographic seed sources (provenances). Once suitable base populations have been assembled, continued long-term genetic gain can be assured through well-planned recurrent selection and mating.

                                  Book Description

The key technology for biomass production of woody species is propagation via micropropagation. Recent development of in vitro culture techniques has made it possible to commercially propagate useful trees, both forest and fruit trees. In this book comprehensive information is provided on micropropagation of economically important forest and fruit trees, which is usually available in scattered literature. Topics cover a wide range, from tropical forest and fruit trees for paper or food supply, to Prunus species for local craft bark production. Micropropagation of Fagus, Eucalyptus, Acacia, Aegle and fruit trees such as grapevine, bananas, apples, avocado, papaya, pistachio, olive, kiwifruit, litchi, and tea is described. General subjects on light quality, arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, pathogen elimination, molecular markers, bioreactor, photoautotrophism, thin cell layer and in vitro germplasm conservation are also described. We are convinced that such contents are extremely useful to researchers and students.

                                      Book Description

The dhurrie—for centuries a widely used floor covering in India—is becoming increasingly popular in Western decoration. Its striking colors and the powerful simplicity and variety of its designs are the perfect accompaniment to twenty-first-century interiors. Just as the great wave of enthusiasm for kilims in the last twenty years ended forever the hegemony of the oriental carpet, these cotton flatweaves are repeating—and to an extent replacing—the sales success of the kilim.

This is the first thorough guide to the dhurrie, incorporating over 240 examples, most specially photographed. Each design pattern, whether of main field or border, figurative or geometric, is carefully analyzed and illustrated. Materials, spinning, dyeing, and the techniques of weaving are clearly explained, and there is a map, a glossary, a select bibliography, and an index.

The history of the dhurrie stretches from the Ajanta cave paintings to the present day, and readers will see here the earliest surviving dhurrie, from the seventeenth century, originally in the Amber Palace in Rajasthan. No one is better placed than Nada Chaldecott to trace this history from the royal workshops of the Mughals and the Maharajahs, to impressive local cottage industries, and even the workshops attached to state penitentiaries.

For collectors and would-be collectors, for textiles aficionados and for everyone interested in a vital source of ideas for design and color, Dhurries is indispensable. 265 illustrations, 248 in color.
