Photos too artsy -- and filled with errors.......2006-10-17
As a longtime Gilbert American Flyer fan, I got six copies of this book as gifts from well-meaning friends -- after buying a copy myself at a book-signing.
Upon close scrutiny the book's shortcomings were evident. IMHO, they wasted too much valuable four-color photo space on expensive, coated stock with multiple pictures of the same locomotives. The photo editor went for the "dreamy" look -- vignettes with a very, very shallow (one-inch) depth of field with the locomotive pointed head-on into the lens. The editorial copy was equally shallow.
The editorial copy has far too many errors, meaning that the authors and/or publisher never had someone with even a basic knowledge about Flyer check the manuscript. To wit, there is a photo of a Lionel pre-war M10000 in the book and it is identified as American Flyer.
This book looks nice, but is carelessly slapped together. I would also apply the tag of "punch-press journalism" to this American Flyer book. The cover -- which sells 60 percent of books -- is warm and fuzzy and is designed solely to appeal to impulse buyers. Unfortunately, as I said I've received six more as gifts from well-intentioned folks who know my love of Flyer.
So, if you want a useful book on Flyer and don't want to waste your money, buy a used copy of any one of the three out-of-print Greenberg books or the one written by Paul C. Nelson. But the Souter & Souter tome lacks both sizzle and steak.
Entertaining and an eye opener..........2002-11-14
"American Flyer-Classic Toy Trains" is a book to explain your hobby to those who golf. The outstanding pictures are wonderful to look at, but some comments do not reflect what is shown. The text is rich with information, much of it new to many collectors.
Far from being a complete, precise telling of the whole American Flyer history, it is an impressive review and a good start at a subject that would need ten times the depth of this book to cover. A very good effort, worthy of owning, and hopefully a door opening to more in the future on this complex subject.

It has been a while since I had a book I could not put down. This book gives you the complete story of American Flyer trains and competition in the toy train industry. The complete history from the original O and Standard Gauge trains produced by W.O. Coleman and friendship and eventual sale to A.C. Gilbert spans 3/4th of a century. Many of the staff of the original company worked for Gilbert and were influential in the development of 3/16 scale trains. The conversion from three rail to two rail track driven by A.C.Gilbert's goal to produce the most realistic model trains made. Well written and lots of excellent photos. You won't find photos of everything the company ever made, but you will find a page turning text that will entertain and inform from cover to cover

The Souters have set a new standard for books about American toy trains.
The photographs in this oversize publication are magnificent. They include prototypes and models, catalogs and layouts, and portraits of the industry giants. Most of the photographs are in spectacular color--enhanced by the coated paper.
The text is authoritative and a pleasure to read.
Most toy train books focus on one manufacturer. Hollander's All Aboard--The History of Joshua Lionel Cowen and His Lionel Train Company-- is a good example. The Souters seem to have used Hollander's excellent blend of text and photos as a template. Their chronological history starts in 1830 and 160 pages later ends in the late 1990s. Along the way they cover every major manufacturer including Lionel, American Flyer, Ives, and Marx as well as many of the lessor known companies. Their up to date treatment includes MTH, Williams, Weaver, and New Marx Trains.
Surprisingly, they didn't include a bibliography, although they refer to several of the classics in the text.
Every toy train collector and enthusiast should have Souter's The American Toy Train on their bookshelf.

A Bargain At Twice The Price!.......2007-10-11
Anyone looking for an up-to-date, definitive, comprehensive reference book on A.C. Gilbert's American Flyer product line simply has to have this book! The descriptions and prices are accurate. The illustrations are clear and crisp. For about $21, there just isn't a better book available on the market. Many of us have invested in the Greenberg American Flyer books that were printed in the 1980's and although those are fine books, the three volume set can easily cost you $500 nowadays. This one book has nearly as much info crammed into one easy-to-read source. I just can't say enough good things about this book! Buy it, buy it, buy it! I don't know what else to say, except that you won't be disappointed. Peace

This book is hardly ever in at our 4 county library system. SoI bought the last one ... had. I made the mistake of giving it "to read and return" to a train buddy. Bad mistake. The variety, workmanship and excellent graphics made this a treasure. Guess I'll just have to ask my master modeler friend and fellow singer about its whereabouts. Shucks, there goes a perfectly good friendship. In estate planning there is the old, old saying: "Once you give it away, it's gone!"

Do it yourself- cheap and easy.......2007-08-01
This is a very good book if you were shocked by the price estimates at the florist. The instructions in the book were very simple to follow. I would agree that the designs are very traditional but after you get the technique down you can change things up. With this book I was able to have over 400 roses at my wedding for under $400. There was no way I could afford even the corsages for each special person in my large family without this book, flowers from the grower, and doing the arrangements myself.

This book provides good basic information and instructions on the how-tos of wedding floral arranging. Offers info on fresh flower and silk flower arrangements. Generally the instructions are quite good- however the author did not provide enough information on attaching the boutineers and corsages.

I am VERY pleased with this book. Each arrangement shows a complete "recipe" for making it along with step by step instructions AND pictures. I will save hundreds of dollars on my wedding flowers thanks in part to this book.

I am a florist and I am always looking for new and exciting ideas. I was looking forward to some "Creative Wedding Florals" and I got a book that is a throwback to the 70's. The Material is very outdated and shows nothing new. I was very disappointed. If you are looking for "Creative

I ordered four or five books about Wedding Day flower arrangements, as I'm determined to do my own. When I received this in the mail, I was extremely impressed by how well everything is illustrated and explained. It makes it all seem very managable.

I was very disappointed with this wreath book. It was nothing but an old book with a new cover. False advertising as I thought the wreath designs would resemble the cover. Not so. Just goes to show the old saying "Never judge a book by its cover is true!"

I ordered this book looking for some new ideas for making different and exciting wreaths and this book gave me exactly what I was looking for in every aspect. Plus it gave me ideas to build on and my imagination ran wild with creativity. I love it when that happens. It is an excellent book and I'm very glad I purchased it. Learn to make your own wreaths from what you grow and find........2001-07-26
As the subtitle implies, this is an idea book. The wreaths are beautiful and the instructions simple. The focus is not only on giving guidelines for preparing the flowers and making the wreaths, but on sharing the elements of design necessary for striking out on your own.
Mr. Kollath steers you through preparing your work space and choosing your tools as only someone who has made many wreaths could do. Instructions are given for air drying and silica preservation of flowers. There are also some wreaths made with fresh flowers.
This is a book for those who want to use what they grow and find. There are even instructions on making your own grapevine wreaths, which Mr. Kollath admits is one of his favorite things to do.
There are some pretty unusual ideas in this book, like making a baby's wreath with building blocks, and using small wreaths for package toppers.
Whatever your color scheme or design theme, there is sure to be a gorgeous full color photo of one of Mr. Kollath's wreaths to spur you on.

The Book arrived in a timely fashion. The photograply was beautiful. However, I found it to be a coffee-table book rather than a text book which I needed.

I loved the books big, colorful illustrations. The instructions were step by step and easy to follow. The materials list for each project made it easy to get organized for the project before I started. I also found the floral arranging tips very useful. I worked at a floral shop for a brief period of time and found the instructions easier to follow than my trainer! A good book for people who love to make crafts for their homes, friends or families.

Cover to cover, this book shows and explains many of the aspects of working with flowers and design.
Creataive Flower Arranging.......2003-09-09
For a garden club member who wants the most concise and helpful guide to arranging for Flower Shows, this is the best text I have seen. Although I have been entering shows for over 25 years, I found it very educational. The detailed descriptions of each type of design, along with great color photographs, were able to provide a framework to try new types of creative arrangements.
The title of this book should read creative vases.......1999-11-21
The entire book is devoted to most unusual vases which would be used by very few people. The actual floral designs used do not require a great deal of creativity.
