Book Description
Sled dogs have been serving humans since they were first tamed and broken to the trace thousands of years ago. Their history of supporting soldiers is much more recent and, for all its drama and heroism, remains little known. This hundred-year history of canine military service from the frozen reaches of Alaska to the snowy battlefields of World Wars I and II is told fully for the first time in this book by former army officer and longtime sled dog aficionado Charles L. Dean.
By way of original army documents, interviews with the last living dog drivers, and never before published photographs, Dean’s book tells a story that begins in Alaska, traverses two world wars and the Cold War era, and ends in the present-day Danish sledge patrol in Greenland. Here are the sled dogs drafted from Alaska and trained by French troops for use in the Vosges Mountains; improvised alpine sled dogs used by the Italians in the Great War; those deployed by the German SS in World War II; and others training in Montana’s Camp Rimini, Colorado’s Camp Hale, and Nebraska’s Fort Robinson. From the nitty-gritty of the making of a canine division to the high drama of dogs conducting daring rescues and parachuting to their destinations, this book richly supplies a missing chapter in military history and in the story of man’s best friend at war.
Customer Reviews:
A MUST have Book.......2005-03-01
I must admit to being a bit biased as I am a friend of Chuck Dean, but this is only because I am also a researcher in the same subject. That being said, there is also a bit of rivalry as I was also hoping to publish the first book on this subject. Unfortunately for me, Chuck beat me to it.... fortunately for every one else he did.
There can be no man more qualified to write this book, he has spent years conducting his research and this book contains about as much information as there is to be had on this subject. Believe me, the information is not readily available and this book is as good as it gets.
It is superb, not only for it's technical details, but also for the personal stories of some of those involved.
There is also a chapter on the use of sled dogs by the SS during WWII. This is a very difficult subject to broach and it is a credit to Chuck that he managed to track down and get a former SS dog driver to tell his story... not everyone was proud to serve in the SS.
This is a must have book and will be one that people will read time and time again. When you get bored of that, there are many excellent photos and diagrams to look at. I can't recommend this book highly enough

Book Description
What distinguishes a great garden from one that is merely beautiful? In her triumphant follow-up to the award-winning
Earth on Her Hands, Starr Ockenga illustrates how a diverse group of visionary American plantsmen and women have taken risks, pushed boundaries, and stretched traditions to create distinctive, idiosyncratic gardens. Boldly conceived and boldly executed, these 21 gardens are highly personal interpretations of paradise.
Each of the gardens bears the indelible stamp of the individual. Paul Held's Connecticut garden reflects his passion for the Japanese Sakurasoh, a variety of primula he propagates from seed. Marlyn Sachtjen's Wisconsin property is a sanctuary for the magnificent trees she has termed "majesties." In his Illinois garden, Justin Harper collects and propagates rare conifers, and in a New York penthouse Mark Bramble's obsession is orchids. Artists such as Sarah Draney in upstate New York and Marcia Donahue in northern California have conceived landscapes that serve as the ideal settings for their own works, while Richard Reames forms living trees into unique arborsculpture in Oregon. William Woys Weaver and husband-wife team Karen Strohbeen and Bill Luchsinger use their Pennsylvania and Iowa gardens as laboratories for ongoing experimentation in heirloom vegetable cultivation and ambitious perennial gardening.
From the making of welcoming garden rooms densely planted with exotic flowers and foliage to sprawling landscapes featuring drifts of native plants in their natural habitats, these gardens represent a personal vision of Eden for each of their creators. Intimate portraits of the gardeners themselves and invaluable lists of the plants and techniques these innovators have devised over years and decades of gardening make this a useful and memorable addition to any gardener's library.

UGH!!.......2005-04-23
Check out "a reader" with one star. I agree. Buy something else.
Starr, Starr, How Does Your Garden Grow?.......2002-02-08
Starr Ockenga's newest book is called "Eden On Their Minds," a playful reference to the title of her recent companion volume, "Earth On Her Hands." Any gardener (or wanna-be) glancing through "Eden On Their Minds" will soon be transfixed...and transported.
I don't have a garden of my own - I have to rely on New York City's parks and mid-highway "malls" for my greenery. Somehow, though, Ockenga's gorgeous book takes me from concrete-bound trees to a world of sweet-smelling, dewy expanses of Iowa grass; the world of moss-hung live oaks lining a centuries-old Louisiana lane; the world of a sage-and-lavender-smelling "gravel garden" in New York State; the world of the proud almost haughty precision of Neville Bryan's Chicago flower garden. Magical.
This is the gift book I gave my mother for Christmas, knowing she would eat up every photograph. This is just the book for those frosty mid-winter nights when you lounge in your favorite armchair, surrounded by garish, boasting seed catalogs, planning your spring. "Eden On Their Minds" is a book that invokes new life, encourages those of us with less than a green thumb, and reminds us that the Earth is struggling to amaze our humble human species, even as we pollute and destroy and ravage.
A helpful addition at the end of every chapter is a list of the plants grown in that chapter's featured garden; both common and botanical names are given, along with a brief description of the plant. An excellent index completes the book.
Starr Ockenga's latest book does amaze us. If you are not already a gardener, after reading this book you will want to be one when you grow up.
A respite from gray winter days.......2002-01-23
As we await the arrival of the first of the spring catalogues, three of my gardening friends and I have been purusing the contents of Starr Ockenga's wonderful new book, Eden on Their Minds, marvelling that the author has come up with a gem equal to its companion book, Earth on Her Hands. Whether we are consulting the wealth of information contained in the detailed plant lists; being transported from the cold and dark of winter by the breathtaking images of Eden that fill the book; daring through the inspiration of these visions to be more adventurous in our own gardens; or imagining a conversation with any one of the gardeners who are introduced to us so engagingly in striking black & white photographs, we agree that this book--a bargain at its retail price, not to mention the [Amazon.com] price--deserves its honored place on our horticultural library's shelves and on our laps as we meet, talk about gardening, and look forward to spring!
The Perfect Gift!.......2002-01-17
I just bought this book for my wife, an avid gardener, for her birthday. I had no idea if she would like it, but based on the publisher's write-up and the contents I thought she might enjoy it. Well I hit a home run! Not only did my wife love the book, but apparently she has another book by this same author. Now we are all happy, my wife loves this book and I scored some brownie points for "paying attention" to my wife's likes and needs!
Don't Miss This Book!.......2002-01-17
I do not often write reviews, however, after reading and enjoying Star Ockenga's Eden on Their Minds, I felt compelled to write this one. Earth on Her Hands, Ms. Ockenga's previous book about older women gardeners across America, was inspirational. Now comes Eden on Their Minds - covering more American gardeners. This time they are men and women, old and young. As the subtitle suggests, these people are bold and adventuresome. They are doing unexpected things in unexpected ways. Go see the living chairs in Oregon, a stone head in a bed of bamboo in California, brick carpets in the landscape of Long Island or 10,000 tulips in the ruins of an old plantation in Louisiana. These gardeners are seen in full page black and white portraits -and they seem to speak directly to us. Dirt gardeners all, they tell us how we can do it, too. Their plant lists and instructions are invaluable. Whether you are a beginner or an advanced gardener, there is lots to learn from this book. You'll also love these people. This is a great read.

Book Description
Interfacial phenomena driven by heat or mass transfer are widespread in science and various branches of engineering. Research in this area has become quite active in recent years, attributable in part, at least, to the entry of physicists and their sophisticated experimental techniques into the field. Until now, however, the field has lacked a readable account of the recent developments. Interfacial Phenomena and Convection remedies this problem by furnishing a self-contained monograph that examines a rich variety of phenomena in which interfaces pay a crucial role. From a unified perspective that embraces physical chemistry, fluid mechanics, and applied mathematics, the authors study recent developments related to the Marangoni effect, including patterned convection and instabilities, oscillatory/wavy phenomena, and turbulent phenomena. They examine Bénard layers subjected to transverse and longitudinal thermal gradients and phenomena involving surface tension gradients as the driving forces, including falling films, drops, and liquid bridges. It is only in the past two or three decades that researchers have performed suitable, clear-cut experiments involving interfacial phenomena, and the stage is now set for a virtual explosion of the field. Interfacial Phenomena and Convection will bring you quickly up to date on the advances realized and prepare you to both use the results and to make further advances.

Book Description
The Kinetic Theory of Gases has applications in many areas of science and technology as well as in our understandings of many natural processes and phenomena from the nano-scale up to the cosmic-scale. Some of the fields and topics affected include manufacturing, health care, weather, defence, pollution, aerospace science and engineering, and others. In particular, the interactions of rarefied gases with surfaces are of great interest because such interactions can have pronounced effects on the behaviour exhibited by those systems in all of the above fields. Such fundamental things as the transfer of mass, momentum, and energy between the components of a system can be significantly altered by such interactions. Collectively this transfer is typically described in terms of Rarefied Gas Dynamics and Transport Theory which generally go hand-in-hand with the Kinetic Theory of Gases. When this transport involves small particles suspended in a gas such as air, it is typically termed Aerosol Mechanics. Thus, this book should prove to be a very useful tool in virtually all application areas involving the Kinetic Theory of Gases, Rarefied Gas Dynamics, Transport Theory, and Aerosol Mechanics. This book is designed to serve a dual function. It is intended that it be capable of serving as a teaching instrument, either in a classroom environment or independently, for the study of basic analytical methods and mathematical techniques that may be used in the Kinetic Theory of Gases and is primarily suitable for use in graduate level physics and engineering courses on the subject. This book should also prove to be useful as a reference for scientists and engineers working in the fields of Rarefied Gas Dynamics and Aerosol Mechanics. In addition, the material in this book may prove to be of interest to individuals working in such areas as Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or any other applied discipline in which gas-surface interactions can be expected to play a significant role.

Book Description
This volume covers topics in cavitation bubble dynamics, sound and wave propagation in bubbly mixtures, bubbles in flow, sonoluminescence, acoustic cavitation, underwater explosions, and bursting bubbles at a free surface.
The physics and chemistry of sonoluminescence and the modelling of jet impact during bubble collapse are examples of issues which enjoy considerable attention. One of the most exciting areas of contemporary chemistry and physics is single bubble picosecond sonoluminescence. The high pressures and temperatures generated over picoseconds, coupled with previously unachievable rates of reaction have recently attracted attention. High temperatures and pressures are often associated with symmetric bubble collapse; however, asymmetric collapse can typically lead to the development of a damaging ultra-high-speed liquid jet that pierces the collapsing bubble. Occurrence of this high speed jet was reported at both the microscale in laser surgery and the large scale in underwater explosions, but it is also frequently present in collapsing cavitation bubbles.
The volume contains a wealth of information on the latest research on a range of topics in bubble dynamics, underwater acoustics and multiphase flow and is an essential reference for scientists and engineers conducting research in these areas.

Customer Reviews:
Complex Subject.......2007-08-20
I have most of the books written by J. Slattery. This book follows a very similar theme. You are expected to have a strong background in the area, maybe from reading his previous books? I would not recommend this book if you are looking for general information about transport phenomena.

Book Description
Adopts a completely original approach to the study of processes of mass transfer. In contrast to the usual approach, based on the concept of continuum media and the theory of heat and mass transfer, the topic is considered from a new viewpoint, taking into account the heterogeneous dispersal state of porous bodies. The editord base their discussion on the theory of surface forces and microhydrodynamic analysis of the processes of mass transport of gases, liquids and vapors, providing the reader with a systematic account of liquid/solid and gas/solid interfaces.
Topics treated in this book include structural peculiarities, equilibrium and properties of liquids in porous bodies. Various mechanisms of mass transfer are considered, including liquid flow in pores and films, gas diffusion, combined transfer of liquid and vapor, convective diffusion in solutions, structure formation, capillary phenomena, and wetting. This unique book provides a wealth of information from the former Soviet Union.
