4 out of 5 stars A helpful book for every dog owner.......1998-06-30

My fiance and I recently adopted a rescued Cairn Terrier with no advance notice. Like many rescue dogs, he had some emotional baggage which expressed itself in bad behavior; we knew we'd have to turn him around if he was going to stay. "Save That Dog" gave concrete tips on how to deal with dog behavior problems that affect many dogs, not just rescued dogs. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is considering adopting a rescue dog and dog owners in general.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderful book for anyone with a purebred, rescued dog!.......1998-03-21

I liked this book! Although I have never had a dog from a rescue league, after purchasing this book, I discovered it helped me with my rescued mixed-breed and my Cocker Spaniel, both of whom came from a shelter. I someday hope to acquire dogs from breed rescue, and I have no doubt that this book will help me achieve that dream. The section on helpingyour new dog adjust to other pets, as I have seven animals currently!

4 out of 5 stars Warm, friendly and practical look at breed rescue.......1997-08-12

A warm, friendly book full of practical insight and heartfelt success stories of rescued dogs who went on to "fame and fortune" as the stars of their new owners' lives.

Some people believe that for a dog to be truly "theirs", they must adopt it as a puppy. Liz discusses the love and total devotion that are common with rehomed dogs, and helps point out that a dog rescued from a substandard environment and placed in a loving, friendly one may be the most grateful pet you ever own. It is an option my wife and I have certainly never regretted.

As owners of a purebred West Highland White terrier, my wife and I continually amaze people we meet when we mention he was rescued from the pound. People just don't believe that pure-bred dogs end up in shelters to be euthanized; most assume the places are filled with mutts coming from alley breedings. Liz points out the startling statistic that less than 30% of dogs stay their entire lives with one owner; pedigreed, intentionally-bred dogs included.

Unrealistic expectations by new dog owners are probably the single greatest reason for this statistic; this book will ensure that you will not be a contributor to the problem, giving intelligent, realistic assessments of the possibilities and realities of dog ownership.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Incredible source book.......2004-09-03

If you can't find a design you can use for inspiration, you're just not looking hard enough. Not for beginners since the designs are incredibly intricate, but your creativity will wake up and take notice.

4 out of 5 stars Super source book.......2004-06-05

Originally, this was a pair of portfolios of designs in the Art Nouveau period. Art Nouveau was not just twisty flowers, though some people like to stereotype it into those narrow parameters. This is not a how-to book with cutting patterns. It has only the paintings with suggested scale. On a few pages, motifs overlap each other, so you can't just scan and go: you have to build up your idea of the covered areas. One pictorial arched piece is missing the right third, again a challenge to finish it yourself.

The designs range from splendidly romantic conceptions of floral forms to windows a-scamper with squirrels or lizards to some that are distinctly eerie. Bats fly across the moon amidst dead trees. A woman combs her hair before a volcano flowing lava. An octopus and a sea-weed maiden struggle underwater--in combat? in love? Several have fishes and there are even cat designs.

You don't have to see these only as windows. I've converted two to rug designs by taking out the excess black lines of supports or piecing necessary to glass work. You may want to take only one area out of an entire design to render in wood, or do a mosaic version of the whole thing. This is a starting point for the competent craftsman who loves the Art Nouveau energy, not an end product.

3 out of 5 stars Not really Art Nouveau.......2003-02-18

Though some of the designs are nice, most are way too busy for my taste, and I wouldn't really call them Art Nouveau. Quite a few of them look more like Renaissance style stained glass, and some of them look modern (like the sailboat patterns?). It is in color, though, which is nice. Very complicated - definately not for beginning stained glass crafters.

Nice plates with dimensions. Good for projects and for idea's. I highly reccomend it.

Sixteen boldly outlined stained glass window designs, derived from motifs originally created by master artisans of the Art Nouveau tradition: florals, vines and leaves, birds, mythical creatures, and more

    Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars nice ideas and designs, but...........2007-04-04

There are lovely stained glass ideas in this book, but... to use as a coloring exercise, you need to know that you really have to have felt tip pens to make the colours show up. There is a lot of black surrounding the designs and the "transparent" colouring areas are a light gray which cuts down on the brilliancy of any colouring.

4 out of 5 stars Great idea book.......2000-12-29

As a stained glass artist, this book got my creative juices flowing. The pictures are fairly complex, just like the stained glass of the 1920's era, and made me wish I had crayons or markers that could duplicate the textured, swirled, multicolored glass that was used during this time! It's a great starting point for people who'd like to take on more complex glass projects and who want to experiment with color combinations befhorehand.

    Book Description

A pictorial record of the bright, bold ceramic designs of Clarice Cliff, whose Art Deco tea services brightened the era with daring and style. Now in paperback, with 60 photos and auction prices from Christie's. The designs of Clarice Cliff are among the most striking and collectable ceramics produced in the 20th century. Angular and uncompromising, embellished in strident primary colors, they were a sensation when they appeared in the 1920s, capturing the spirit of the Art Deco movement. Her teaware is as sought after today as it was then, her most collected designs, such as her Bizarre ware, commanding high prices. This beautifully photographed book evokes the mood of the Art Deco era as it conveys the enormous charm and range of Cliff's work in china tea services. It offers a complete record of her teaware designs as well as a fascinating look at her life and work. Leonard Griffin is the author of Clarice Cliff: The Bizarre Affair. 128 pp 7 x 7 40 color & 15 b/w photos

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Receiving kudos for Clarice.......2007-03-28

As a collector of Clarice Cliff, I read almost anything relating to her. Clarice was way ahead of her time. She was an uneducated British girl in the 1920's who through hard work and brilliant ideas became a pioneer in art deco ceramics. Leonard Griffin is a master scholar of Clarice and this book was another one of his carefully reviewed study of her work.
Identifying her teaware as a celebration is absolutely true. Almost 80 years later, her work is more collectible than ever and it is fascinating to read how she evolved her designs and manufacturing ideas into the most beautiful teaware.

The Art of Glass is a beautiful introduction to the art of glassmaking during its most innovative period of the 20th century. Beginning with the precursors to art nouveau, this survey traces art glass through the magnificent creations of Louis Comfort Tiffany and Argy-Rousseau, Lalique, art deco, and Swedish modernism. The historical background of each artist and company is discussed in detail, as are evaluations of their achievements, making The Art of Glass an invaluable guide to the medium. A glossary and index of glass artists are also included.

Fine pictures with solid historical copy. I would rate "The Art of Glass" five stars if it were't for the exclusion of the glass of Frederick Carder, not only a major contributor to the genre, but designer/maker of some of the most beautiful glass objects of any period ever made.
