Black Powder Compendium.......2006-02-19

The author (S. Fadala) is a recognized expert in the area of black powder shooting sports. The manual is well planned, referenced and provides a progressive experience in the use and feeding of black powder firearms. All areas of loading and shooting are represented in the manual. However, as might be expected, emphasis is placed on the rifle and pistol loads. Unfortunately, this does not carry over to the muzzle loading shotgun(s). This is an area that requires further work and shooters in this discipline might feel slighted.

blackpowder Bible.......2002-11-03

Fadela has done it again. This seminal work, now in its third edition is updated and better than ever. Anyone, who uses a blackpowder rifle , pistol or shotgun should be equipped with this due to its sheer range of information.

The book usefully covers the history of blackpowder rifles, what is avalible and basic care. Safety is emphasised, complete with enough horror stories to ensure one is always careful.

Basic loading techniques are covered- flintlock, and cap lock for all types of firearm. The illustrations are clear, and the text nicely liad out and readily understandable by even the most novice shooter. Even the expert would learn a lot from Fadala in some of his tips- I certainly did. The rest of the book covers loads for practically all (I certainly am unaware of any brand that has been missed) blackpowder and pyrodex muzzle loaders in the market today. Loads are suggested together with ballistics. I have checked the figures with my own rifle and they are spot on. Everything is covered from .75 Cal Smoothbore "Brown Bess" Flintlocks to .32 cal cap lock squirrel guns. There is no critism that can be made of this book but for binding which is a soft cardboard- yours will soon fall to bits as it is taken to ranges and on shoots. Other than that- highly recomended.

Your opinion of this book will depend on your other resources. If you don't have the time and/or access to the Internet, this book will go a long way to helping you get started in black powder shooting. If you have time to lurk in some of the blackpowder chat rooms, and to read other on-line resources, you'll get more, newer and specific information for free. The writing is clear but gets a bit repetitive at times, and there were too many commercials for certain products in the text for my tastes. If you can get this book from your local library, check it out first to better decide if its worth your money. I probably would not have bought it if my local library carried it.

This book was very informative, but "long winded". This is more a collection of articles than an organized, coherent, book-format approach to the subject. The reading is interesting and it is clear that the author knows his subject, but I struggled to quickly gain the knowledge that I was seeking. This being said, I'm not sure that there is any better resource available. So, if you like me, are new to the subject of blackpowder and you'd like to gain knowledge from a book rather than trail and error, then you don't have much choice. Suck it up and read on... not unpleasant, just verbose.

Revised and expanded - more "complete" than ever.......2002-01-23

After repeat borrowing the first edition of this book from my local library, I was thrilled when this 4th edition became available. Sam Fadala answers more questions I had in this edition than in the previous ones. I personally could have done without the chapter on hunting. But at the same time I did appreciate the chapter about the historical background of the big-bore guns. The only improvement I would like to see is a chapter about "kit guns". I.E. who might consider buying a gun this way, which skills are essential and what are the pitfalls.
Overall I find this book very informative. The chapters are organized in a fashion that make it your choice if you'd like to read up on a single topic or read this work front to back. Judging by the used prices for the first edition, this book was a classic a while back and to me it has become a "must read" item for anyone who considers getting into the black powder thing. I purchased this reference a few years ago. Once I received it and began using it, I wondered how I'd ever gotten along without it. The author's British and so the dictionary's common names are more often "British" than "American", but it is still the handiest plant dictionary I have. It is a little larger than pocket size, but it is still small enough to be held comfortably in one hand.

This book does not need a review. Anybody who is involved in plants, other than the garden kind, knows full well that this is an essential reference. Quite up to date too, which is pretty amazing in view of the pace that science sets. There is an enormous mass of data in here, printed on very thin paper, making for a very handy book that will fit a spot near where you need it, which is likely to be often.

My most used reference book.......1999-11-07

As a graduate student in ecology I often encounter unfamiliar genera in the literature, and a quick peek in Mabberley gives me enough taxonomic grounding to keep plowing ahead. By constantly referring to this book, I have greatly improved my knowledge of plant relationships.

this book meets my exact need in a field guide for this region. It provides excellent photos and essential ID facts. For a thorough knowledge base I have to do further research elsewhere, but this book is the gateway for seeing and knowing on site for these plants.

Can they be that beautiful?.......2007-09-15

Iy you are a layman, you will certainly ask whether "rock like " items like these can be so pretty. When you read on and understand that nature is actually the artist behind them, then you will start to appreciate that their brilliant color, the pretty pattern as well as the variety of what used to be living trees in this planet millions of years ago are not any less beautiful than the common gems and precious stones which we are much more familiar with. The excellent photos will certainly tempt one to read the book again and again . The only regret is perhaps the lack of more publications on these gems, despite a second and equally attractive book by the same author.

Blaze of color.......2000-10-12

As the various reviews point out this book is a blaze of color. Excellently photographed and excellently printed this volume gives a good impression of how beautiful petrified wood can be. This work is perfectly suited as a coffee table book.

As a wood anatomist I cannot help feeling that an even more beautiful book could be produced by shifting the focus to anatomy: when magnified these woods would look even better. I guess a palaeobotanist would agree with me that this would make for, from a scientific point of view, a more usable and valuable book.

Nevertheless this is a magnificent piece of work: there are some quite stunning pictures in here.

Petrified Wood: The World of Fossilized Wood.......2000-02-01

The best photographic presentation of petrified wood I have every seen. Frank Daniels' love of the subject can be seen in his work as laid out between the covers of this superb book. I totally enjoy showing non palaeontologically minded people this book when they visit. If a person is looking for a photographic presentation of petrified wood, then this would have to be the book. I heartily recommend it. Congratulations Frank on a terrific book.

WHile there are a number of flower books for the Sierra available, I found this one particularly useful because the plants are arranged by family so you can learn how to identify plants that are not in the range covered by the book. THe introductory section was also really informative and interesting.

Weekends in Tahoe are tons better with this book in tow. It is way cool to know the names of the gorgy plants and flowers with whom you are sharing your away-from-work time. I especially like being able to answer my two-year-old's question, "What's dat one momma," as he begins to take an interest in the names of the plant life surrounding him. A great gift for parents of children who go to Tahoe from time to time...or for anyone still young at heart/inquisitive enough to want to know more about Tahoe vegetation.

Without a doubt, this is the best plant or flower book I have ever read. The author clearly knows Tahoe Basin vegetation and natural history like nobody else. The key is masterful in its simplicity, the pictures spectacular and the text brilliantly concise (and sometimes witty!). You can leave your tent, cell phone and coffee mug behind, but you must not forget Mr. Graf's book when going to Tahoe.

I just took this book with me on a trip in the Sierra and found it very useful, informative, easy to use, and complete. The 60 page introductory section, which covers the natural history of the area and plant taxonomy, was very interesting and informative. The photographs are beautiful as well.
