The Knucklehead motor was faithfully replicated by Tedd Cycle, Inc. and released on January 9, 2002; along with the (Linkert carburetor-intake port) OEM-style Pan cylinder heads in three models: The 1948-'54 (plumber manifold); the 1955-'62 (O-Ring manifold); and the 1963-'65 (external oiler) style.

Our shop manual was written for existing "runners"; and for "builders" of Knuckle & Panhead motorcycles using new, replicated parts. Some topics covered in the step-by-step procedures are not in other OEM Harley manuals, or the excellent Clymer's Panhead manual. When another manual suggest, "replacing the clutch hub liner..." we show you how, and the tools and parts necessary.

Read on through the editorials section for more story on where the Replication adventure is headed. The "motorcycle buying and building public" is still asleep about Knuckleheads. They want to see some pioneers go before them and blaze a trail of standards first. However, there are people out there (like Chris Haynes) that are already building cross-modeled "bobbers" with Knucklehead frames and (early army) XA spring forks (or 1949-'59 Glide forks); fitting upswept shotgun exhaust and KH barrel mufflers. Utilizing the interchangeability of a (1936-1964) 28-year parts run, these mix-and-match possibilities allow a builder to create a unique design, while still using replicated Harley-Davidson components.

Best "Tool" in my tool chest.......2005-01-14

I'll keep this short and to the point. As the title says, this is the best "tool" I have in my tool chest. The information in this book has helped me more times then I can recollect. The book is written from a practical perspective and isn't full of theoretical "how to". It even includes descriptions of how to make some of the special tools you'll need from items you probably have laying around your shop. I can't wait for Vol. 2!

Be a man drive a Pan.......2001-11-23

This book is lacking in some important areas. No carburetors, no transmissions, no brakes. Need to know how to adjust your mousetrap, change springs on a springer, or fix a leak on your hydraulic front end? You won't find it in this book. The topics it does cover are great, easy to understand, and well detailed. The bottom line is I do use this book and it has become a permanent part of my shop library.

Buy this book first.......2001-07-31

I am looking into buying a Pan, and searching for more than anecdotal information. This book is the best source of Pan info I have read so far. It helped me realize that a Pan wasn't the best choice, and that I would need to spend a lot of time wrenching, instead of riding.

I wish they'd write one for Shovelheads!!

Original Harley-Dvidson Panhead Restorer's Guide 1948-1965.......2003-03-14

This book offers more information for those seeking to do a proper restoration and should be on any Panhead fan's book shelf.
It has very good quality photos of period bikes with close ups of most. That is also the one weak link for this book. The bikes are period pieces and not totally original machines with a couple of exceptions. This is in no way a knock against the book or it's author, it's just the best of what is available. Totally correct machines are very rare. In support of the author, he does point out what is not correct on many of the photos. When used with his earlier book, Harley-Davidson Panheads, you have a very good resource and for that I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in this subject.

Restoration Quick Reference.......2003-02-15

This book arrived just in time. The OEM style Replica Pan (Linkert carburetor intake) cylinder heads and crankcases are available from V-Twin Mfg.. A person can now build a "Special Construction" Panhead from individual parts; a 1948 rigid springer Pan; a 1949-57 rigid frame; a 1958-64 swing arm; or the 1965 Electra-Glide. 6 or 12 volt, your choice. This valuable resource shows you a clear picture of each model and equipment groups. Use a yellow highlighter to mark first and last year changes. Go ahead, it's your book. An excellent contribution for the home-builder.

If you own an original, or if you're building a 1948-1965 Tedd Cycle (V-Twin) Replica, you'll need every piece of written material you can get your hands on. This service manual covers areas that our manual does not (i.e., Linkert carburetors, transmissions, forks, brakes, "mousetraps" and 1965 Electra-Glides), and more in depth maintenance procedures than the OEM 1959-69 Service Manual.

This is a maintenance book!.......1999-01-29

This is a Clymer maintenace book for Harley Panheads. It is a very good book on care and feeding of panheads, but the Amazon description makes it look like the history of pans. One good good thing is that there is a section of the book which describes the proper paint and features for particular year pans. Useful for restores.

Nothing Like A Panhead.......2001-06-16

The most comprehensive book written on the 1948-1965 Panhead, this book is as good as his Knucklehead book. Contains an Equipment Group of Big Twin Options at the back, so you know the correct trim pieces offered each year. The author has put the Panhead motorcycle into prospective with a little history; and compared them to other great big twins of the era, the Vincent Rapides and Black Shadows (instead of comparing Harley vs. Indian). Reading the sidebars throughout this book, finds coincidence in advances made on new models, on both sides of the pond. The author is exacting when discussing any design improvements made to the big twins, and covers the changes to the Panhead year by year. The subliminal value of a Greg Field book, is that he's a technical writer and a story teller.

If you only ever buy one Panhead book - buy this one !.......2001-02-05

Greg Feld has produced a superb book here that mixes accurate detail on the Pan with wonderful period anecdotes and superb photos. Greg even manages to dig up archive information on mid-year changes and the rare P model.

No book writer can ever hope to cover every detail of a models history, but this guy comes real close !!

To the sad bloke that mis-read Gregs info on years, and slates this superb book (further down the list of reviews). - '65 model year Pans were produced in 1964, and followed into '65, yet ALL '65 model year bikes were stamped 65. '66 Shovels started production in '65 and yet were stamped 66. If this practice wasn't followed, then how else would HD have '66 Shovels ready for dealers to sell in late 65/early 66 ?

After purchasing this book, I find it to be an excellent reference for restoring a panhead. Not as detailed as How To Restore Your HD, but good. Any book that gets down to the type of screws and the finish is fairly complete.

This book does indeed cover '65 Pans. A quick check of the index sends you to the pages containing 1965 Pans complete with terrific color photos. Never judge a book by its "short discription"!

Does not even have the years of production correct!!.......1997-01-16

I had read a short discription of the book stating that Panheads were produced until 1964 according to the author. My good friend, Bob Pickersgill rides a 1965(!) Panhead every day in the summer. Field should get his facts together BEFORE publishing a book.

The first thing that stands out when you read this book is the great photography and excellent illustrations. Raymond J. Evison guides you through the wonderful world of Clematis by teaching you all there is to know about this beautiful plant. You will learn the history, classification, the different species, and much more.
As Evison states, this book isn't a monograph of the species, but a guide for the gardener. So, it has just enough background information so that the gardener has a good foundation. Even I got a bit lost in the groups section, but it becomes clearer as you get more into the book. I would have liked to see some shots about propagation, planting, training, and pruning, especially in a growing guide, but overall the descriptions and the book as a whole is great.
This is not a book for the complete novice, but for the intermediate to advanced gardener.
