Product Description

How do political conflicts shape popular culture? This book explores that question by analyzing how the Planet of the Apes films functioned both as entertaining adventures and as apocalyptic political commentary. Informative and thought provoking, the book demonstrates how this enormously popular series of secular myths used images of racial and ecological crisis to respond to events like the Cold War, the race riots of the 1960s, the Civil Rights movement, the Black Power movement, and the Vietnam War. The work utilizes interviews with key filmmakers and close readings of the five Apes television shows to trace the development of the series’ theme of racial conflict in the context of the shifting ideologies of race during the sixties and seventies. The book also observes that today, amid growing concerns over race relations, the resurgent popularity of Apes and Twentieth Century—Fox’s upcoming film may again make Planet of the Apes a! pop culture phenomenon that asks who we are and where we are going.

5 out of 5 stars Engrossing, intelligent, and eminently readable.......2004-12-31

Greene also does the text commentary on the 35th anniversary DVD of the original PLANET OF THE APES movie, and you can see why he was chosen. His deep insights into that film, and the ones that follow, are an absolute joy to read. If only the producers of the dismal remake of PLANET OF THE APES had read Green's book, they'd perhaps have understood how deeply symbolic and profound the original was. Although this is a scholarly work, it is also just a whole heck of a lot of fun. Five stars.

2 out of 5 stars Lighten up!.......2001-06-26

After reading this book and contemplating just how seriously Mr. Greene takes the Planet of the Apes movies, I can only say one thing: his premise would make for a great magazine article. :-)

5 out of 5 stars Great reading! Academic and and informed........1998-09-11

Eric's book is a marvel of academic analysis. The way in which he relates the Apes series, in all its incarnations, to the political and racial strife of the day is nothing short of amazing. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful, readable, enjoyable--the ultimate Apes book........1998-05-20

From beginning to end this is the study of the Planet of the Apes series that everyone of the series' fans have dreamed of and that academics who never took the series seriously will learn from and hopefully teach. In addition to being an enjoyable read, Greene has a politically-minded scholar's insight that helps lift the series from trivia into concrete seriousness. I think it is a model for future works of film scholarship and appreciation.

      Book Description

Many of the papers in this volume were first presented at the Third International Great Apes of the World Conference, held July 3-6, 1998 in Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia. The editors of this volume, the first in a two-volume series, are world renowned, having dedicated most of their lives to the study of great apes. The world's premiere primatologists, ethologists, and anthropologists present the most recent research on both captive and free-ranging African great apes. These scientists, through deep personal commitment and sacrifice, have expanded their knowledge of chimpanzees, bonobos, and gorillas. With forests disappearing, many of these studies will never be duplicated. This volume, and all in the Developments in Primatology book series, aim to broaden and deepen the understanding of this valuable cause.

      5 out of 5 stars peter's review.......2004-12-02

I think you should read the monkey-monkey's trick by patricia Mckissack because it's a good book. In this story monkey-monkey needs a new house. I think you should read this book because the hyena was in a disgusise as the beautiful creature and the ugly monster and that's hyena tricking Monkey-monkey.

5 out of 5 stars My kindergartner loves this book!.......2001-01-28

Contrary to a previous review, this book is NOT about a mischievous monkey who is always playing tricks.

It's about Monkey-Monkey, who wants help building a new home -- but when Hyena offers to help, Monkey-Monkey suspects a trick and turns him down. So Hyena dresses up as a Beautiful Creature, and promises to help Monkey-Monkey in exchange for a big pot of stew. When Monkey-Monkey makes the stew, Hyena returns disguised as an Ugly Monster and eats it all up. Then he comes back as a Beautiful Creature, but there is no stew, so he will not help. This happens again, until Monkey-Monkey sees through the trick, and plays a clever trick using a disguise of his own, and wins out over Hyena in the end.

This is a Step 2 reading book, for grades 1 - 3, but the story is written so that even pre-K audiences will immediately know that it is Hyena in disguise. It's a great book for a kindergartner or first grader with good reading skills, and my kindergartner reads it over and over. We finally bought it so the library could have their copy back.

      3 out of 5 stars Monkey-Monkey's Trick.......2000-04-03

This book is about a mischivious monkey whose always trying to play tricks on other animals. It has pictures that let the reader fully understand the book.

        Book Description

Mother and infant negotiate over food; two high-status males jockey for power; female kin band together to get their way. It happens among humans and it happens among our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom, the great apes of Africa. In this eye-opening book, we see precisely how such events unfold in chimpanzees, bonobos, and gorillas: through a spontaneous, mutually choreographed dance of actions, gestures, and vocalizations in which social partners create meaning and come to understand each other.

Using dynamic systems theory, an approach employed to study human communication, Barbara King is able to demonstrate the genuine complexity of apes' social communication, and the extent to which their interactions generate meaning. As King describes, apes create meaning primarily through their body movements--and go well beyond conveying messages about food, mating, or predators. Readers come to know the captive apes she has observed, and others across Africa as well, and to understand "the process of creating social meaning."

This new perspective not only acquaints us with our closest living relatives, but informs us about a possible pathway for the evolution of language in our own species. King's theory challenges the popular idea that human language is instinctive, with rules and abilities hardwired into our brains. Rather, The Dynamic Dance suggests, language has its roots in the gestural "building up of meaning" that was present in the ancestor we shared with the great apes, and that we continue to practice to this day.

                Book Description

It has been twelve years since a work relating to the long-tailed African monkeys known as the guenons has been published and fifteen years have passed since the last major scientific symposium was held that was solely dedicated to current research on members of this monkey group living in the wild. Since that time, new guenon species and subspecies have been discovered, previously unstudied guenon species have become the subject of long-term research projects, and knowledge of the more well-known guenon species has greatly increased. This volume presents novel information and keen insight on research previously studied and newly discovered. A wide range of topics related to guenon biology is presented, including evolution, taxonomy, biogeography, reproductive physiology, social and positional behavior, ecology, and conservation. Composed of 26 chapters compiled by 47 authors, many of whom are young investigators in their field, The Guenons: Diversity and Adaptation in African Monkeys provides a valuable resource for researchers and scientists in the fields of anthropology, primatology, zoology, and conservation biology.

                Customer Reviews:

                5 out of 5 stars John G. Fleagle.......2003-07-25

"Guenons are one of the most specifically diverse groups of living primates, but the true extent of their behavioral, ecological, and phylogenetic diversity has remained largely unappreciated. This exciting volume describes many new aspects of guenon biology. The authors use the diversity of guenons to address, and often question, several major tenets of primate socioecology. Most significantly, this volume thoroughly demolishes the view that guenons are a uniform radiation."
                - John G. Fleagle, State University of New York at Stony Brook

                5 out of 5 stars John F. Oates.......2003-07-25

"This book is a cornucopia of recently-gathered knowledge about the natural history of Africa's most species-rich group of anthropoids. The volume is particularly strong on behavioral ecology, but it also presents important new evolutionary analyses and, in a useful section on conservation, makes practical suggestions to address the growing threats posed to the survival of African primates by ever-increasing habitat loss and hunting."
                - John F. Oates, Hunter College

                5 out of 5 stars Karen B. Strier.......2003-07-25

"The Guenons is encyclopedic in its coverage of this remarkably diverse group of primates. From chapters on evolutionary history, behavior, ecology, and conservation, The Guenons also offers a window into the world of primatology, as seen through the lenses of these monkeys and the researchers who study them. Glenn and Cords should be commended for assembling such an impressive set of contributions from so many guenon experts. This volume will be the standard reference on the guenons for many years to come."
                - Karen B. Strier, University of Wisconsin-Madison

As an avid collector of just about everything, I was delighted to receive this book as a gift one Christmas. Its organization into topics and subtopics make it extremely easy to find information on any particular subject; the photographs are excellent; and the prices well-researched. Obviously the prices will change with time, and hopefully the author will revise the book in a few years. But meanwhile, the current edition can't be beat for its extremely interesting and informative articles on each topic. The best part about this book is that the reader not only gets an education about black collectibles, but a good read as well!

                  Book Description

The French, who are known for their style in all things, have long brought their artistry to bear on vegetable gardening, turning plots that could be merely utilitarian into gardens of real beauty. The Art of French Vegetable Gardening explores this rich and varied tradition in a way that is both inspirational and practical. Combining 175 color photographs shot throughout France with an informative text, The Art of French Vegetable Gardening explains how to create different styles of decorative vegetable gardens, from the strict geometries of formal tradition to the happy-intermingling of vegetables with flowers, herbs, and fruit trees beloved by organic gardeners. Each chapter offers useful advice and suggestions—applicable to gardens anywhere—while evoking the rich cultural context of the French potager as lovingly described by Colette, Proust, Gertrude Stein, and many others.

Elements of garden design—including layout, hedging, walls, benches, and vertical accents—are detailed, as are specific vegetables that can provide both beauty and flavor. Other topics include companion planting using herbs and flowers, heirloom and collectors' varieties, and even the vegetable garden in winter. An extensive appendix offers 80 classic Frnech recipes for vegetables, lists of plants American seed sources, and French vegetable gardens open to the public. Practical as well as beautiful, The Art of French Vegetable Gardening is an invaluable sourcebook to return to again and again.

5 out of 5 stars Useful gardening information and visually stunning.......1999-08-25

I read this book after stumbling across it at the library. I am going to purchase a copy because I think it is an invaluable reference for gardening and travel. I am plotting a course of the gardens described in the book and hope to tour some of them on my next trip to France. Thanks to Ms. Jones for a rewarding read and a visual treat.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful pictures, and interesting information........1999-07-20

This book strikes me most with its beautiful pictures. If you can stop thumbing through the pictures long enough to read, you will find that the format is user friendly, and there is useful information on many aspects of gardening. One of my favorite book to look through in the winter!
