Great book...but it could have been better.......2005-01-11

The concept of this book is very good: minimum text - maximum pictures. All art monographs should follow the same principle.
The book is split into the chapters dealing with dominant artistic trends of the time, and subchapters dedicated to the most important artists within each trend/movement.
The brief introductory essays are well written and help understand background behind the movements or artistic groups whose most representative works are displayed on the subsequent pages.

If one hasn't seen d'Orsay's magnificent collection in person, they'll be amazed by this lavishly illustrated monograph.
In most cases there is one plate per page, sometimes two and very seldom three. However, what I don't understand is 2 inches wide margin around the reproductions (???) Why? Why they were not printed at least an inch larger at all sides?

Besides, though even the best repros can't do justice to the original, many pictures could have been much better. Don't get me wrong - majority of reproductions is of good quality, but there are those (I'd say one third of the total number) which are considerably lighter than the originals and/or have rather compressed values - Manet's Olympia being the most obvious example. (I've visited d'Orsay two months ago and the paintings are still vivid in my memory).

However, these remarks shouldn't stop you from purchasing the book, since monsieur Lemoine in this monograph included works of many great but usually neglected artists, those which one can very rarely (or never) see in the books on art of the 19th century. There are enough books on Impressionists to fill all the world's garbage landfills many times over (and thousands upon thousands more are printed every year), yet it is so hard to find one monograph on the likes of Cabanel, Delaunay, Fromentin, Bonnat, Laurens, Carriere, Levy-Dhurmer, Hammershoi etc etc.

Our favorite.......2007-06-04

Context: I'm not an academic or a scholar; I'm a regular guy who likes visiting museums when I travel and I wanted to do a little researach before I left. This book worked well for my daughter and I to determine which parts of the museum deserved the most time (on a short trip) and to get a better understanding of the works. I'm not qualified to evaluate it from an academic perspective, but as a layman it was exactly what we needed. I bought several museum books all at the same time and this was the best.

Just like a visit to the museum! Packed with high quality reproductions throughout even by 2005 standards. Special semi gloss clay faced paper was used, which improves fine details and also resists age. Just wonderful!

I was fortunate to be able to visit the Musee D'Orsay on my last trip to Paris. This book was filled with lovely photos of what the museum displays. It was a wonderful trip down memory lane of one of my favorite experiences.

Excellent book with historical perspective and insight.......1999-04-19

Vanina Costa's book on the Musee D'Orsay is the kind of book that makes you interested in something that you were only vaguely acquainted with before you read it. 12 paintings by twelve 19th century painters featured at the Musee D'Orsay are analyzed for their style and content, with a sort of expert detail that you would not expect to see in a guidebook to a museum. The one regret I have is that Renoir was not included in this survey, but we get to learn about Seurat, Courbet and Vuillard as well as Monet, Manet, Van Gogh , Degas, Cezanne and Gaughin. A really good read that should be made widely available to patrons of art museums across North America , Europe and Japan and elsewhere in Asia.

In 1804, at the dawn of the French Empire, there were no more than a handful of Spanish paintings in public collections in France. During the course of the nineteenth century, however, French collectors and museums assembled substantial holdings of works by such Spanish masters as Velázquez, El Greco, Zurbarán, Murillo, and Goya. At the same time, French writers and artists—among them Delacroix, Géricault, Courbet, Millet, Bonnat, Degas, and, especially, Manet—came to understand, appreciate, and even emulate Spanish painting of the Golden Age.

This beautiful book features over 150 works by French and Spanish artists, charting the development of this cultural influence and mapping a fascinating shift in the paradigm of painting: from Idealism to Realism, from Italy to Spain, from Renaissance to Baroque. Above all, it vividly demonstrates how direct contact with Spanish painting fired the imagination of nineteenth-century French artists and brought about the triumph of Realism in the 1860s, and with it a foundation for modern art. American artists of the second half of the nineteenth century often turned to Europe for training and inspiration. as a painter and fan of both manet and velazquez, i found this weighty tome disappointing. the focus is heavily institutional, with separate lengthy chapters on the history of the prado (madrid) and the louvre (paris) and their collections and display policies. the tone is self congratulatory, with no mention, for example, of the prado's misguided 19th century "restoration" (censoring and repainting) of works by goya and velazquez. the emphasis on manet as the source of spanish influence in france inappropriately neglects painters such as corot and downplays the secondary influence of degas. particularly galling is the negligent exploration of technique, style and imagery across the painters. this book provides absolutely no insight into the essence of velazquez's art (everything is reduced to "la cuisine" or brushy technique, which just as well characterizes rubens or hals), nor why it was novel in comparison to italian or northern european traditions (rubens and hals again), nor manet's struggle to accommodate it, nor what this struggle meant to other artists in paris at midcentury. one is left with the impression that spanish postcards somehow became fashionable and artists are rather faddish people. the narrative crawls from one microscopic example of influence or iconography to the next -- this manet painting derives from a specific etching or carte de visite -- and lingers lovingly over inventories of copyist visits and painting sales. j.s sargent *and* carolus-duran merit a skimpy 12 page section of text, while the collector archer m. huntington and the hispanic society of america get a fulsome 20 pages. the upshot is a verbose celebration of collectors and museums, with scanty understanding of artistic influence and its transformative effects on painting practice.

The downside to this book is its lack of pictures. There are lots of line drawings, but they tend to show particular stages of a process, rather than each step. Color photos are limited to one section, and since the photos are separate from the descriptions, they don't add much value to the book. With bullet-point lists, icons for highlighting categories like "ecofriendly" or "time-saving," and simple tables and charts, how-to photos aren't essential. Easy guide to tree and shrubs.......2000-06-17

Excellent book. I found this a very quick read. It has easy access to areas via the index and the chapter breakdowns. The explanations on planting and testing of soils were easy to understand and really do work. I tryed it. Nice to be given advice and it works. I also was able to easily find trees and shrubs that would grow within specific regions. The authors humor in her chapter titles bring a light side and catch the eye. Great book for the dummy (like myself)who knows nothing about what a tree/shrub is or even less how and what to do with them. From this book I have graduated from dummy to a true novice. Thank you.

The vocabulary is recorded as closely as possible to the meaning and its various nuances. The old translations, such as the Septuagint, the Vulgate, the Targums and the Syriac version are considered as well as the Hebrew-related Semitic languages. FR Mit der 4.
