Book Description
Man's Most Dangerous Myth was first published in 1942, when Nazism flourished, when African Americans sat at the back of the bus, and when race was considered the determinant of people's character and intelligence. It presented a revolutionary theory for its time; breaking the link between genetics and culture, it argued that race is largely a social construction and not constitutive of significant biological differences between people. In the ensuing 55 years, as Ashley Montagu's radical hypothesis became accepted knowledge, succeeding editions of his book traced the changes in our conceptions of race and race relations over the 20th century. Now, over 50 years later, "Man's Most Dangerous Myth" is back in print, fully revised by the original author. Montagu is internationally renowned for his work on race, as well as for such influential books as "The Natural Superiority of Women", "Touching", and "The Elephant Man". This new edition contains Montagu's most complete explication of his theory and a thorough updating of previous editions. The Sixth Edition takes on the issues of the Bell Curve, IQ testing, ethnic cleansing and other current race relations topics, as well as contemporary restatements of topics previously addressed. A bibliography of almost 3,000 published items on race, compiled over a lifetime of work, is of enormous research value. Also available is an abridged student edition containing the essence of Montagu's argument, its policy implications, and his thoughts on contemporary race issues for use in classrooms. Ahead of its time in 1942, Montagu's arguments still contribute essential and salient perspectives as we face the issue of race in the 1990s. "Man's Most Dangerous Myth" is the seminal work of one of the 20th century's leading intellectuals, essential reading for all scholars and students of race relations.
Customer Reviews:
Ahead of its time.......2007-05-31
Montagu's book was ahead of its time in terms of the DNA evidence on 'races'. There are no such thing as human 'races'. The very idea of 'race' is actually racist. Most biologists, anthropologists, and geneticists ditched the idea of 'race' in the 1950s. The lay public still believes in this myth.
The DNA research against the 'race' myth is very damaging to white supremacists because it undermines their entire worldview. A white supremacist could get their DNA tested and it would demonstrate what DNA haplogroup belonged to their distant ancestors (maternal and/or paternal). The haplogroup would have migrated from Africa and through the Middle East, or Asia and to a white supremacist this violates the mythology that they surround themselves in.
Also, the idea of a "white" person only emerged in the early 1700s. If you were to go to Europe or anywhere else on the planet before the idea of 'race' emerged and ask who is "white", people would look at you as if you were insane. Another funny thing is to compare a piece of paper with the skin color of a "white" person and demonstrate how it never matches.
A modern book by an evolutionary biologist on the 'race' myth is Joseph Graves' (2004) book, "The Race Myth".
Another book that is the most detailed examination of the idea of 'race' is Audrey Smedley's "Race in North America" now in its third edition (2007).
A Contemporary View of Race.......2006-06-14
Race cannot be viewed from a sociological perspective alone, and unforuntately this is what Dr. Montagu does throughout the text; the genetic and medical evidence that suggests race differences is enormous, and a simple introductory biology course will tell you that there are obvious, albeit trivial, characteristics that distinguish human populations. Race must be viewed from an evolutionary perspective first and foremost, as a process of becoming, and anyone who fails to acknowledge this fact must engage in more thorough and less biased research into the issue.
Montagu gives in to the tempting prospect of seeking out what one wishes to find in order support the conclusions he postulates. When an issue merits proper respect and scholarship, this mistake has the potential of misleading generations of people to accept something on faith for little more than some sociopolitical agenda.
not to mention DNA.......2002-07-19
i am of italian descent, make of that fact what you will.i read this book 25 years ago, prior to being required to read "double
helix." without mentioning dna the author proved to me that differences were so miniscule as to make race moot.this was an
excellent book.should be high school requirement.
Left out some things.......2001-12-14
I feel the author has left some things out, some things that the zealous "see! I AM OK!" readers need to know. Like:White people are not the only ones that use race as a "social construct". in 1942 when written (and a long time before that), a small minority of White people used race to try to keep others down. Now in 2001, a small minority of people of color use race as a crutch, using to as an excuse not to work hard and succeed. People need to stop feeling sorry for themselves, realize there is no white conspiracy to hold others down and get on with life.
The author also leaves out preference to be with one's own kind. Do Whites force people to live in certain areas? No, those people buy houses and rent apartments in areas where they are the majority out of choice to be with their own kind.
Also, history was ignored in the book. Do we hate Italians because they were Romans who conquered and enslaved hundreds of thousands over decades? No. Do we hate the Egyptians because they did the same? No. There is just a natural tendency to hate the last group to do what has been done since the dawn of man. Do we hate Norwegians because they had Viking ancestors who conquered, robbed and dominated all over the world? No. Do you hate White people because a small minority of them oppressed Black people 20 or more years ago? Yes! You do!
Poorly edited mess with glimmers of interest.......2001-12-10
This book may have been revolutionary in 1942 but today it seems to strain to argue points that most Americans readily accept. It also tends to be incredibly choppy, with thoughts coming and going like bad housegeusts. Lastly, it has all the faults one would expect to find in Montagu: he sacrificed his science for politics, and thus there are many times where he wildy exhorts his point of view or uses ad homineim's against his opponents. The reason is the book was not written to explore a phenomena, but to convince people that some things are wrong and other right morally. So his science suffers. However, there are glimmers of intelligent ideas and devastating studies that derode the basis of 'race thinking.'

Bold Romantic Gardens: The New World Landscape of Oehme and Van Sweden
ASIN: 0679429468
Release Date: 1995-02-07 |
Book Description
By bringing what H. Marc Cathey, president of the American Horticultural Society, has called "a new wave of naturalism" to America, James van Sweden and his partner, Wolfgang Oehme, have revolutionized American landscape design. Van Sweden and Oehme are internationally renowned for their public projects and private commissions: responsible for the Hudson River Park in New York City and several gardens of the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington, D.C., they have landscaped the properties of celebrity clients such as Oprah Winfrey and David Brinkley, as well as many more modest gardens for private homeowners.
According to van Sweden, no garden is too small to benefit from the soothing, sensuous qualities of water. Gardening with Water, the first in a new series of books to be written by van Sweden, covers everything from birdbaths and small fountains to waterfalls, swimming pools, lily pools, and water edges. Writing for professional and nonprofessional gardeners alike, van Sweden begins with an overview of influences -- from Frank Lloyd Wright's "Falling Water" to palace gardens in Kyoto, Japan -- before surveying close to a hundred of his own projects to illustrate how he and Wolfgang Oehme introduce water into their garden designs. Several chapters are devoted to practical questions: what to plant, where to plant, whom to contact, and how to build. Clear instructions are supplemented with numerous illustrations, extensive diagrams, and a detailed glossary of trees, plants, and flowers (including Oehme and van Sweden's trademark grasses).

Encyclopedia of Water Garden Plants
ASIN: 1564651886 |
Book Description
Water has featured prominently in garden designs for thousands of years, and its appeal to the senses still attracts the imagination of gardeners worldwide. Ponds and other water features need careful planning, and though there are other books with wonderful ideas, many of them lack the very practical information that water gardeners need to know.
"The Master Book of the Water Garden" is the most comprehensive book on the subject. It includes detailed step-by-step illustrated instructions on all aspects of water garden construction and maintenance--from building a raised pond to propagating marginal plants. Philip Swindells also provides advice on choosing a style based on the reader's budget, time constraints, available site, and proposed function.
Customer Reviews:
ONE OF THE BEST.......2004-06-26
This book has all the information needed to build and maintain a pond. There is everything you need to know from A-Z including maintaince, plants, fish, etc. A must have.
Great coverage for building ponds and water gardens.......2001-07-19
This is an excellent book for building water gardens, ponds, pools and streams. The subject is covered thoroughly with detailed descriptions about installing fountains, lighting, islands, and landscaping. There are lots of lovely photos that will let your imagination grow as to the kinds of ponds you can design and build. You are only limited by the size of your yard. There is a large section about adding different types of water plants to specific areas of the pond. Plus, there is good coverage about adding fish, attracting wildlife, and performing seasonal maintenance. Construction techniques vary from simple to more complex designs, including waterfalls and ripple effects. Another book, Nash's The Complete Pond Builder, seems to have slightly better construction detail and also more examples of smaller ponds. However, Swindells' book is much more comprehensive and it contains a lot more information about maintenance, fish, and plants.
COMPLETE!.......2000-04-08
This Book has GREAT content. Not only does it have clear, and easy to understand diagrams of plants, but it supplied me with information to build my own pond. Now, my pond is filled with koi that rest underneath some waterlilies . The water hyacinths, (which I did not know about until reading this book) , smell soooo wonderful. My pond would never be complete without this book. I say you buy it, because it is worth it's price!

Persistent drought conditions in many areas have focused attention on the need for less wasteful landscaping practices. Too often, however, people think of water-efficient landscapes as being boring and unattractive. In this book, co-authors Jim Walters and Balbir Backhaus present more than 300 arid-adapted plants that will bring dramatic color, beauty, and cooling shade to low-maintenance, water-thrifty landscapes --- putting an end to the myth that beautiful gardens require a lot of water and work.Published at $39.95 Our last copies available at $19.98

A terrific guide to plants of the southwest's arid climate........1998-05-24
Shade and Color is the only book I have found on the market that offers such an update guide to arid-climate plants. The pictures are well done and plentiful.
The majority of the book consists of "Individual Plant Descriptions" -- amazingly comprehensive. The authors have even taken the time and forethought to classify whether or not your plant will do well in not only one but also several desert elevations.
Every important landscape detail is accounted for each type of desert plant. You will know ahead of time the height, width, flower color, and watering needs of each plant.
Anyone living in the Southwest and California that wants to be successful at landscaping needs this book in his/her library. This enlarged text is also an essential reference book for landscapers and landscape maintenance companies.

Book Description
Centres of Learning deals with the relation between learning and the locations in which that learning is carried out. It is the editors' belief that the character (and, in part, the content) of a particular aspect of learning is determined -- or at least influenced -- by the circumstances in which the learning process takes place. The contributions in this book deal with various aspects of learning, in a broad historical and geographical perspective, which ranges from Ancient Babylon, via classical Greece and Rome, and the Middle East (both Christian and Islamic), through to the Latin and vernacular cultures of the Christian West in the Middle Ages and the Early Renaissance.
