Included among the 235 full-color pictures are never-before-photographed sequences such as nesting, molting, preening and territorial aggression, as well as an unprecedented portfolio of hummingbirds feeding from wildflowers.
Esther Tyrrell has written the accompanying illuminating text, by far the most complete and up-to-date information on hummingbirds ever assembled, which will make this book the definitive source for both scientists and the general reader for years to come.
This lavishly illustrated volume opens with an introduction to this lovely family of

Stunning Photos!.......2006-05-06
Of course, everyone loves the feisty, peppy hummingbird with it's glorious colors. This book shows details that the average birdwatcher never sees. The close up photos, some in action sequence, are a delight and there are pictures even showing the nests made of cobwebs, feathers and lichens.
The text supplements the photos giving details of the author's observations on hummingbird behavior.
One section covers the different hummingbirds, giving each variety a two-page spread. There are several photos plus a listing of the field markings, range, breeding range, winter range, nesting, migration and habitat for each.
Additional graphics are quite useful, like the one showing the names for the body parts of hummingbirds. What a useful (and beautiful) book!
Unbelievable photography.......2000-12-29
This book conains the most amazing photography imaginable (the authors' companion book Hummingbirds of the Caribbean is just as wonderful). Dazzling colors and awesome stopped-action shots. I can't imagine how it was done.
Highest praise.......1999-03-16
The wife and husband team of Esther and Robert Tyrrell logged over 30,000 miles of travel to photograph and document the 16 species of North American hummingbirds. Using his own special high-speed strobe techniques, Robert has photographed the tiny colorful birds in a variety of activities flying, perching, and nesting. The book contains over 200 amazing photographs, reproduced in dazzling color. In her text, Esther has culled information from hundreds of sources and provides a comprehensive and well-written overview of the birds' anatomy and behaviors. A must for any bird lover!

A Humming Bird in My House: The Story of Squeak.......2007-09-30
We were given this book that is filled with wonderful close up observations about one hummingbird. The author shares how she learned so much when a hummingbird over stayed his summer visit and how she helped "Squeak" until the following spring. The book was very enjoyable. We are hummingbird lovers and feed them.
Enjoyable and heartwarming........2007-08-04
A heart warming story and a great read. If you enjoy birds or wildlife you will like reading this book. The quick thinking and commitment by the author
saved this little hummers life.
THIS IS A VERY SPECIAL JOURNEY.......2007-06-19
which the talented and admirable writer, Arnette Heidcamp, leads the reader through - namely, the first months of a Hummingbird's life, from the beginning of winter to the advent of spring.
Ms. Heidcamp has amazing expertise in both bird and plant life, and what one appreciates also is her great love of them both. One wants to thank her for this lovely book and for the precious photographs which accompany it.
Throughout the book, the reader gets to know Squeak more and more, to understand the habits and traits of this darling hummingbird, and to realize what an intelligence it has. Ms. Heidcamp is dedicated and devoted and, yes, the ending is sad. I have to admit I shed a tear or two as a reader saying goodby. I can only imagine what an emotional time Ms. Heidcamp had to go through, after fostering this hummingbird so carefully and intimately, when the time came to set Squeak free.
I have alredy got several of Ms. Heidcamp's other books lined up to read, and even signed up with Random House to get an e-mail notice when she has a new book published.
I can't praise this wonderful literary and photographic pursuit highly enough. Reading this book was a true joy!
Absolutely beautiful photography and lovely story.......2007-02-24
Very beautiful photography and a touching story of how the author was able to create a relationship with a very tiny and fragile creature who otherwise would not have survived the winter.
Well worth buying.......2006-11-05
If you have any interest in hummingbirds at all, you should read this book. It is a quick read, heart-warming, heart-breaking, packed full of beautiful photos and tons of information about hummingbird behavior.

Hummingbirds book a beauty.......2007-03-11
This book was purchased as a gift for relative traveling to southern Costa Rica. The birds are so beautifuuly photographed. The gift was greatly appreciated.
Plain-capped Starthroat?.......2006-07-11
A fantastically beautiful book! Plain-capped Starthroat is readily attracted to flowers and sugarwater farther north in its range; I don't think of it as an elusive canopy species at all.

The Crystal Hummingbird.......2006-08-16
A deeply touching story of tragedy and despair and one woman's battle to overcome the loss of her precious child. The strong sense of love and commitment to her family and our Lord is so beautifully expressed throughout her story and poetry. Emotions surreal to the reader, that you feel as if you have shared each of these moments in time, side by side with her.
I came to know Bella a short time ago and have been so blessed by her gentle spirit, not knowing of the heartache and turmoil she had experienced until I read this book.
Although most of us have at one time or another felt the heart wrenching sting of death through the loss of a loved one, the death of a child I cannot even begin to fathom. I had difficulty putting this book down as I was certain that the Lord's purpose and plan would be revealed in this family's story. This book offers the hope of faith renewed and lives restored through their journey from tears and suffering to joy and peace within.
Surely the Lord has purposed Bella to write her story that we might know that only by His grace and mercy can we have the victory to endure the most painful and trying times in our lives. God's word says, "He will never leave us, nor forsake us", and testimony to the evidence of His promise flows throughout each page of "The Crystal Hummingbird".
Bella is truly gifted of the Lord in writing and poetry. I praise Him for touching her heart to share her story. I pray He will continue to use her gift to help others in their struggle to overcome. To Him be all the glory!

I highly recommend this book, it is colorful, contains interesting facts and is written in simple language for children. A great gift for a bird lover of any age!
Beautifully Written and Illustrated.......2003-05-21
Irene Kelly's most recent book is a must have for any child's library - but adults will also love it. It's a Hummingbird's Life is filled with fun facts and lyrical watercolors. My daughter was thrilled to receive this gem of book, and has read it over and over. Parents will especially appreciate the tips on hummingbird gardens.
A pleasure for kids and grown-ups, too.......2003-04-20
This beautiful book is filled with fun and fascinating hummingbird lore. A great choice for children who like to read facts about living creatures. My son has been recounting what he learned from Irene Kelly's book to everyone who will listen. These tiny birds are rendered in dazzling color and detail by this artist, who also has a handle on exactly what children want to know. Highly recommended!
It's a Hummingbird's Life.......2003-04-18
I purchased It's a Hummingbird's life as a gift for my mother, an avid Hummingbird lover, but found I could not give it away, my six year old loved it as much as I did. With a "wow" and a "cool" on every page, he enjoyed the factual information as much as I loved the vibrant watercolors. This book is one of those rare finds that works as a gift for children, parents, and grandparents!
Beautifully illustrated and fun too!.......2003-04-12
My family recently visited Costa Rica where we saw many incredible hummingbirds - Since that trip, I've been searching for a children's book about hummingbirds with no success, until now. It's a Hummingbird's Life is simply stunning - the pictures as well as the writing. A welcome change from the usual dull nonfiction fare for kids. I highly recommend this book for children and adults alike. Bravo!

Hummingbirds!.......2001-04-23
"A Hummingbird's Life," written and illustrated by John Himmelman, is an excellent educational book for young readers. The book is an introduction to the life cycle of the ruby-throated hummingbird. Nearly every page contains a beautiful full-color illustration, along with simple text.
Himmelman shows us hummingbirds hatching from their eggs and learning to fly. He then follows a hummingbird on his migration south, and shows us the "dance" with which the male hummingbird seeks to attract a mate. Many other aspects of hummingbirds' lives are also portrayed. The book contains moments of both humor and suspense, and ultimately celebrates the beauty and resilience of these amazing creatures.
The book's educational value is enhanced by a short but useful glossary. Himmelman clearly has both a knowledge of and affection for hummingbirds, and both of these things come through in this wonderful book.

Customer Reviews:
Really interesting.......2004-03-18
As a complete beginner, I found this an interesting book to read. It seems to cover both the finance side of coin collecting along with the hobby aspect, something I appreciated while reading it. I recommend it.
Average quality on all accounts.......2004-02-27
I read a good part of this book while flying from Athens to Vienna and I have mixed feeling about it. The book itself, as a publication that is, is way below present-day acceptable standards with b&w low resolution (bearly distinguisable) photos of coins on a dark-brown recyclable paper. Altough the content is always more important than the cover, the overall quality bothered me a lot. Content-wise the situation is much better. Altough I am not really interested in US coin varieties, presenting mint errors, how they were made or how much they cost, what to consider etc is helpful for every collector and I did learn a couple of new things. What I especially enjoyed was the coin grading guide which was quite thorough and extended to many pages. This was quite rewarding as it was one of the most important reasons I purchased the book in the first place. I also liked the information about the coin market, which -although commonsensical in large part- made an interesting reading and helped me in a couple of investing decisions. to conclude, I did gain knowledge from this book, but apart from the grading stuff it was more of a light reading than a source of great information. Since it costs only a few dollars, I would recommend it to beginners but certainly not to experienced collectors.
Valuable asset to increase your Assets!.......2002-08-27
If you have ever had a coin in your pocket you need to have this book in your library. Scott A. Travers is an amazing writer who carefully and thoughtfully explains everything you need to know about coin collecting.
Excellent Guide.......2000-05-05
This book had many tips for the new collector. There are e-mail addresses and address of people that can help with coins that you are not sure are errors. It tells you what coins to buy and which are not a good bet. All in all, I've you're a new collector, buy it!
This book is a GEM.......1999-09-29
Scott Travers makes numismatical things easy to understand. A great book for all. I highly reccommend it!

Become a Sunflower mother.......2005-09-11
I got this kit from a friend and I just planted the seeds two weeks ago. As a first time planter, I'm very excited! 3 out of the 4 seeds sprouted and are growing really fast. The only thing the book did wrong was that it didn't tell you that you have to transplant them into a bigger pot with real soil after they get to a certain size. I think that's why they died on a lot of customers. The flowers run out of room to grow and having nothing left to do but die. I just transplanted them today and while it was really hard to get them out of the little container, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll thrive and produce flowers. So if they add that to the book, then more people would have more luck with them. Otherwise, I think it's a great little kit! I'm having a lot of fun!
Love it!.......2005-05-19
This is a great kit. I was worried at first because the seeds were so small, but all four of them sprouted. The first one that sprouted died but that was my fault because I didn't give it enough sunshine. The book is really small and cute, with some good projects and some interesting history inside. The other three are doing very well, all of them sturdy and healthy. The only thing I recommend is to transplant them when they grow their second or third set of leaves. I recommend this kit to anyone, even people who claim to have 'no green thumb'. With a little tender care and love, a few minutes each day to take care of them, and plenty of sunshine, these little seeds will grow, grow, grow into little mini sunflowers!
Pretty good.......2005-04-09
Even though the last two people think it's terrible, I think it was pretty good. I LOVE sunflowers and I have grown tons before. This was like my 30th sunflower. I did everything they asked me to, watered it when the soil was dry, cared for it well and my work paid off. The sunflowers grew, bloomed and thrived. The only thing wrong is the book. I think its too small and short.
terrible.......2004-02-02
I agree with the prevous review. The same thing happened to me. I followed all the directions. If there were an option not to give it any stars I would have.
Dead Sunflowers.......2002-10-28
I bought this kit entirely because I thought it would be fun to have some sunflowers to brighten up my bedroom. I wasn't originally interested in the book part, but I did read it because I had it, and it was pretty useless. I planted the sunflowers in the provided "pot", and followed all the directions. I watered it regularly and sat it next to the window every day. All the sunflowers died anyways, before flowering. The kit comes with exactly four seeds, and all grew into little seedlings, and then died at about the time that their second set of leaves came out. I'm not sure why, but this kit was definitely a disappointment!
