This book is truly comprehensive. First, Jahiel explains how to establish a healthy human-horse relationship. Then, she moves on to the problems, ranging from horses that don't like to be groomed or handled, to horses that regard a visit from the vet as a traumatic experience. And because the situations presented in this book are common to all horses and horselovers, Jahiel's advice is applicable to every breed of horse, and to Western as well as English riders.

Not what I expected..........2005-11-25

I bought this book hoping for some basic advice about horses with vices. What I got was an interesting but altogether not very helpful collection of letters that addressed VERY specific problems. The answers did not include anything that really helped me as a rider either. All in all, it's a neat read but more of a borrow-from-the-library than a good buy.

Enjoyable but no new revelations.......2005-08-16

Unless you've totally missed the boat with natural horsemanship, you know that the key to doing anything with horses is having patience, a theme that is repeated over and over again in every section of this book. I needed help with a bucker, and Jessica's bucking info basically reiterated what I already know. Check saddle fit, and call in a professional trainer. If I had the money for a professional trainer, I wouldn't have bought her book.

Best Horse Advice Book I have EVER read!.......2004-07-01

I have been suscribed to Jessica's HorseSense online newsletter for some time, and as soon as I found out she was putting a book together I knew I had to have it. I recommend it to ANYONE who wants to know more about horse behavior. Jessica explains everything in an easy to read and easy to understand manner. She addresses almost every problem that horse owners and horse riders have and the advice is just plain great. I would love some day to be able to meet her to share my admiration of her knowledge.

Hores Behavior Problem Solver.......2004-06-22

This book is a must have for everyone who strives to be a better horsewoman/man. Jessica's perspective challenges us to look at things from the horse's prospective, to ask ourselves if we are communicating the right questions for the answers we get from our horses. Her advice is invaluable to me as I train my two 4 year olds. I refer to this book weekly and have read it cover to cover many times over. It seems that each time I read the questions and answers, I pick up something I missed the time before. Or maybe, the second or third reading, I am ready to Hear that part of the answer! More, Jessica! Keep writing!!

From Cowboys to Cartoons.......2000-12-13

This auction catalog has the best variety of items from cowboys to cartoons, comedy to crime, creatures to classics, with your basic super heroes thrown in for good measure. It is by far one of the only books you can get that actually shows some of the most rare posters of the early 1900's. I was really impressed with the images and graphics reproduced in this issue. This catalog has all my favorites in it, especially the horror films. I also really liked the idea of seeing the lobby card images pictured on the same page as the Raven and the Black Cat. I would definitely recommend this book as a reference for anyone intersted in movie posters.

Very disappointing..........2000-08-26

I must say, I am astonished that this book has recieved the positive reviews that it has. I bought this book with the intent of gaining knowledge in the area of designing with grasses. I read it from start to finish and found that the entire text consisted of rambling, repetative, generalizations that were devoid of any substantial content. I was completely shocked that the authors would dare publish such wishy-washy material.

In addition, many of the photos are out of focus and the corresponding descriptions are often incomplete. The descriptions of specific grasses are very brief and many very popular grasses are not included at all.

I have never been more disappointed with a book purchase of any kind on any topic.

Not a great reference book.......1999-12-26

I'm writing this review to balance out all of the 'great' reviews this book has received. The book is okay, but it is not a great reference book. It has several faults:

First, the book is suppose to be about grasses, yet 25% of the text discusses garden flowers.

Second, many of the photos are cluttered or blurred. There were few species specific photos that displayed a single clear crisp grass variety.

Third, the book rambles and takes the long way to discribe a simple observation. Some readers will enjoy this style, but it's not for me. I want something that gets to the point.

Fourth, the species reference (called 'Selected Plant Catalogue'), is sparse and dated. For example, Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Overdam' is covered in just three words, 'outstanding variegated form'. Gee ... somehow I was expecting more information. There is not one photo of Overdam in the entire book. Likewise, there is no photo of Festuca glauca 'Elijah Blue'. These are two very popular grasses to have been leftout.

On the positive side, there are some neat winter photographs of grasses, and the book contains some useful information (but it is difficult to find it when you need it).

This is the kind of book that you're suppose to sit and read from cover to cover. A pleasure reading book. Not what I do with garden books, I read them rather like an encyclopedia - and this is not a good choice for a reference book.

Excellent explanation and examples of mature plantings.......1999-11-11

We are a Landscape Design/Build firm specilizing in using ornamental grasses in our design concepts. We have found this book to be an excellent sales tool to show clients how the mature grasses will look in their L/S design. The text is extremely informative and gives a good basic knowledge of grasses to the novice. The photos are stunning.

Excellent writing and pictures of ornamental grasses.......1998-11-30

This book covers all the different types of ornamental grasses; from choosing cultivars to the many ways they can be used in your garden. The best book I have seen in this area!

The most complete book you could buy for ornamental grasses........1998-06-12

An excellent text on the subject of ornamental grasses. The authors acknowledge that ornamental grasses are only a part of the landscape, and they address the other types of plants that work well with them.

They approach the subject from a landscape design frame of reference, how to work grasses into your garden. This information is usually only available through your own trial and error. King and Oudolf take out the guesswork. What puts this book a step above all others about the same subject is that it informs its readers how to plant in combination with other perennial flowers. The 161 color photos and very thorough coverage of ornamental grasses and their companions make this the most complete package you could buy for incorporating these graceful, ornamental features into your design.

I knew nothing about gardeing with grasses but wanted to try some in my backyard so I referenced this book. So far, my garden's been a huge success, thanks to Martin's advice and photos.

Despite the title, there's scant information on using grasses in the landscape. And many of the photos are of poor quality. For the money, there are better grass books on the market. For great photos and inspiration, I much prefer Nancy Ondra's "Grasses: Versatile Partners for Uncommon Garden Design."

Solid book on ornamental grasses.......2004-04-27

I must start off by saying that I love ornamental grasses. I love the way they look, especially in winter when their long stalks and inflouresences sway in the wind against a backdrop of a snowy white blanket. Martin Quinn and Catherine Macleod have put together a great book showing how to use grasses in landscapes. They discuss forms and uses before giving details about 100 different species of grass. I've found several that I want to incorporate into my landscape, and even found some design suggestions in this book. Quinn is a renowned grass breeder in Canada, so he knows his grasses and includes many that are hardy for use in northern climates.
