4 out of 5 stars The third in the series is the best........2000-05-30

Although this is not normally the kind of horse and/or riding book that I read, I'm glad that I made my way through the entire three book series. Since I've finished them I've put into practice that what I picked up and have seen a difference in the relationship that I have with my riding partner. There's something to be said for age and experience especially when it comes from someone with "horse sense".

5 out of 5 stars This is Henry's last work and perhaps his best.......1999-08-02

If you've read Henry's previous books, you have to read Horse Sense. His adventures continue and find maturity in his final work. After paying his dues and struggling with his redeemed misfits such as the indomitable "Cork Beg," Henry finally gets to realize some of his dreams as a trainer and competetor. I wasn't ready for this book to end.

I strongly suggest the reader progress through Henry's work in sequential order; Talking With Horses, Thinking With Horses and Horse Sense. By doing so the reader can enjoy the greater adventure in chronological sequence and fully enjoy the colorful characters, both human and equine, that Henry brings to life in his work.

Henry Blake is probably my most recommended author for horse enthusiasts and home horse trainers to read.

Daniel Okrent, the author of The Ultimate Baseball Book, has written not just another windy paean to the national pastime, full of labored metaphors and recollections of demolished stadiums, but a detailed, digressive breakdown of a single early-season game between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Baltimore Orioles on June 10, 1982. Along the way the reader learns about the history of the slider, the building of the Orioles by their famed manager, Earl Weaver, how batters' swings reveal their personality, and even which brand of vitamin C can be found in a certain player's locker. It's a labor of love, but an enthralling one that reveals the complexities at the heart of this most complex and maddening game.

Book Description

You'll never watch baseball the same way again. A timeless baseball classic and a must read for any fan worthy of the name, Nine Innings dissects a single baseball game played in June 1982 -- inning by inning, play by play. Daniel Okrent, a seasoned writer and lifelong fan, chose as his subject a Milwaukee BrewersBaltimore Orioles matchup, though it could have been any game, because, as Okrent reveals, the essence of baseball, no matter where or when it's played, has been and will always be the same. In this particular moment of baseball history you will discover myriad aspects of the sport that are crucial to its nature but so often invisible to the fans -- the hidden language of catchers' signals, the physiology of pitching, the balance sheet of a club owner, the gait of a player stepping up to the plate. With the purity of heart and unwavering attention to detail that characterize our national pastime, Okrent goes straight to the core of the world's greatest game. You'll never watch baseball the same way again.

5 out of 5 stars 25 years later, still doesn't feel dated.......2007-03-06

The events in this book will reach their 25th anniversary a few months from my writing this review, and the only things that feel stale are the salary figures. The book has a deceptively simple concept: nine chapters, one for each inning, but with descriptions of the game events and extended reflections on why they happened, mostly from the perspective of his hosts, the Milwaukee Brewers. For example, when Milwaukee's Ted Simmons comes to bat, Orkent discusses the machinations behind the trade that brought Simmons to the Brewers in the first place. Orkent, one of the godfathers of fantasy baseball, and now the Public Editor of the New York Times, is a truly gifted writer. This is fine baseball writing, suitable even for fans who have yet to celebrate their 25th anniversaries on Earth. It's so good that if I pulled it out in another 25 years, it would still be relevant and beautiful.

4 out of 5 stars Great! Make Another One!.......2006-01-27

This book is about the last game in a four-game series between the Baltimore Orioles and the Milwaukee Brewers. It is an old book (I was four years old when this baseball game was played), but I still found it VERY interesting. I do not know a lot of the players, coaches and other baseball personalities in the book, but I still loved it. Especially interesting was tracing the life and career of Bud Selig. Who would have known that this owner would turn out to be one of the most controversial baseball commissioners in baseball history? Also interesting in the book was chapter six's discussion of the history of the baseball commissioner and how it had evolved since its inception after the Black Sox scandal. I consider myself a big baseball fan, but there were a lot of baseball things I had no clue about.

I really enjoyed the writing style of the author. He did not dramatize the baseball game, but told it very matter of factly as most radio announcers and followers of the game see it. With almost 3,000 games a season, it is hard to be too dramatic about any of them. The book does a great job of reflecting the different baseball personalities, and not only their careers but also a bit of their personal lives. Almost always included was the business aspect of their careers.

My only complaint about the book is that at times I was lost in the onslaught of names. Several times throughout the book, there were so many names being used, I couldn't keep track of them all. This was frustrating, but did not cancel out the value of the book. I wish they would make another one (make it a Braves game please).

3 out of 5 stars solid read, but too verbose........2006-01-25

Daniel Okrent is no doubt a talented writer. This book is a good read but it makes you wonder if he wrote it with a thesaurus in toe. I liked the player stories, but it is more than one-sided in favor of Milwaukee Brewers coverage. Being a die-hard baseball fan, this didn't bother me all that much. If you are a casual though, you may want to skip this one. Not as essential as others will have you believe.

5 out of 5 stars Nine Innings-.......2005-12-22

I read this book back in 1998, when I was getting back into baseball. To read it is to enjoy a baseball game, just the same as if you are in the stands, pitch by pitch. It gave me all the background that I was interested in ( 40 man vs 25 man roster, free agency rules though those need to be updated with every collective bargaining agreement). The stars of this game are gone, but it calls back there names, just as a good conversation with the guy in the seat next to you might. I agree it could be updated, and to do a new game would be a beautiful picture of how the game has changed.

2 out of 5 stars Too verbose and too one-sided.......2005-11-17

I had heard about this book so I was interested in getting it. When I saw it at a bookstore I quickly snatched it up. Once I started reading, I became annoyed as seemingly every sixth word had me scrambling for the dictionary. Don't get me wrong I have a good vocabulary, but when was the last time you used the word "hemidemisemiquaver"? That's what I thought.

Along with trying way too hard to sound smart, Okrent spends far too much time talking about the Brewers. Hey Dan, two teams played this game not one. By the end of the book I knew almost everything there was to know about the Brewers' players, but little about the Orioles' players. Had Okrent spent more time discussing the O's players too, I would have found this book more enjoyable. I wouldn't bother with this one unless you are a Brewers fan.

Book Description

Fredrick J. Miller came to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from Germany 150 years ago and started a small brewery that would evolve into one of the world's largest. In The Miller Beer Barons, author Tim John tells the complete story of the family that built a beer empire from the entrepreneurial days of brewers like Miller, Pabst and Best, through the struggles of Prohibition to the corporate modern era.

A member of the Miller family, John introduces readers to quirky and controversial family members like Emil Miller, who smashed beer bottles of competitors with his cane when he discovered them at taverns, or John's own father, Harry, who served a brief, but stormy, tenure as company president. Tim John spent several years researching the book, which is likely the most complete history of Miller Brewing ever done.

"The Miller Beer Barons" arrives just in time to commemorate Miller's 150th anniversry in 2005.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Refreshingly Honest Beer History.......2007-05-20

I went to High School with the author in Milwaukee- just blocks from the Miller Brewery; played on the same football team. Later I spent 13 years as an employee of the Miller Brewing Company. (After Tim John's family had sold to Philip Morris).

Tim has to be congratulated for both the scholarly handling of the subject and his candor about what has to be a deeply emotional subject.

I know that Tim John really cares for the people at Miller Brewing today. Even with no direct ties to the brewery he wanted to know how the workers at Miller were treated during my tenure. He is entitled to take pride in the incredible heritage his family left.

This book is quite refreshingly different from most self praising beer stories. Tim John writes frankly and well about a family business, a city and its neighborhoods, and the sometimes crazy world of beer. It's like that first good lager on a warm summer day!

I hope to catch up with Tim in Milwaukee sometime; perhaps at the 2007 150th Anniversary celebration of Marquette University High School. Maybe he'll buy me a beer!

If you want a real and honest history get this book.

5 out of 5 stars A trans-generational tour of wealth, power, and their sometimes rocky transitions.......2006-01-07

The Miller Beer Barons: The Frederick J. Miller Family And Its Brewery is the true and fascinating story of the Miller family, which started and ran the Miller Brewing Company for over one hundred years. Stretching from late 1800's Germany, when Mr. Miller brewed his first beer, to 1970, when Harry G. John Jr.'s sale of Miller stock was the end of the family's involvement with the company, The Miller Beer Barons is a trans-generational tour of wealth, power, and their sometimes rocky transitions. An inset section of black-and-white photographic plates nicely rounds out this exhaustively researched, meticulously detailed, highly recommended family biography.

          Book Description

Many people know of Milwaukee's famous beer brewers, such as Schlitz, Pabst, and Miller, but these pages contain the story of the original baseball Brewers. The Milwaukee Brewers of the American Association spent 51 seasons (1902-1952) on the city's near north side. To have had the opportunity to stretch out in the sun-soaked stands of Borchert Field during that era was to witness minor league baseball at its best. The Brewers were the second-winningest franchise in the league's history, and names like Tom “Sugar Boy” Dougherty and Nick “Tomato Face” Cullop were once household words throughout the city. This book stands as a tribute to the colorful history of this team and to all the former players, coaches, and managers who ever wore the woolens for Milwaukee.

4 out of 5 stars The Milwaukee Brewers, Days of Yore.......2006-09-05

This is a book about the Milwaukee Brewers, the American Association Milwaukee Brewers, the team that I grew up with. Did you know that Casey Stengel guided the Brewers to first place in 1944? He did. The Brewers played in the American Association from 1902 to 1952. The Braves pulled up their Boston stakes in 1953 and moved the team to Milwaukee thus ending the Brewers 51 year relationship with the American Association. If you were raised on the old Brewers, as I was, there are some names you will instantly recognize. Heinz Becker, Nick Cullop, Danny Murtaugh and future Hall of Fame inductee Rudy York. There is also the obscure. Hy Vandenberg, Alex Metzler and Pete Manion. You will also learn that Anton "Tony" Kubek, father of Yankee infielder and former radio/television broadcaster Tony Kubek, played for the Brewers from 1930 to 1935. The book is long on pictures, but short on text. It does not have an index. It would be beneficial if it did, but lacking an index does not detract from the enjoyment of reliving the Milwaukee Brewers of yore.

This is a great book that has great pictures and wonderful information on how to choose and start an alternative lawn. I give it 5 stars because it truly provides what it touts, perhaps with a little extra unnecessary information.
However, EASY LAWNS by Brooklyn Botanic Gardens gives all you need to know at half the price. It, too, has nice pictures. It is smaller and a paperback where WILD LAWN HANDBOOK is a hardcover.

There are quite a few books out now about why we shouldn't stick with the traditional grass lawn, but this is the best one I've seen to explain the practical alternatives, with inspiring photos and helpful appendices. Ms. Daniels is really concerned with the aesthetics as well as the politics of environmentally friendly yards. I recommend it to all my friends who are thinking about getting rid of some or all of the grass. A "9" just because I wish it had more pictures

Book lovers will want to buy this book simply because it is such a beautiful little book. It's nicely laid out at the perfect size for a little book, printed on slick paper and has dozens and dozens of top quality photographs.

I am not a lawn or gardening expert, but this little book seems to me to be chock full of good information. The section on ground covers other than grass, such as bulbs, perenials, and bushes is particularly good for such a short book. In addition, there are scores of tips and techniques for everthing from filling in low spots in your lawn to raking and aerating to planting bulbs under your lawn and dividing and propagating bulbs and other plants.

There are deficiencies. In particular, there is no discussion of soil PH, and the coverage of grass species is poor. A page on each of these topics would improve the book a great deal. A simple chart of grass species and their characteristics would be a great help.

I would characterize this as an "idea" book. You will get a lot of useful information about how to care for your grounds, but you will need to supplement this book with another for really comprehensive coverage of lawn care. Try "Lawn Care for Dummies."

More important, you will get good ideas about how to make your lawn and gardens stand out. In this regard, the photographs alone are worth the price of the book.

                                  Book Description

The language of Latin veterinary medicine has never been systematically studied. This book seeks to elucidate the pathological and anatomical terminology of Latin veterinary treatises, and the general linguistic features of Pelagonius as a technical writer. Veterinary practice in antiquity cannot be related directly to that of the modern world. In antiquity a man could claim expertise in horse medicine without ever passing an examination. Owners often treated their own animals. The distinction between `professional' and layman was thus blurred, and equally the distinction between `scientific' terminology and laymen's terminology was not as clear-cut as it is today. The first part of the book is devoted to some of the non-linguistic factors which influenced the terminology in which horse diseases and their treatment were described.
