Product Description
Fields of Peace unites two remarkable talents in masterful volume. The text, written by the late Millen Brand, illuminates the history of the Pennsylvania German sects who were united in their rejection of infant baptism. He provides a sympathetic portrait of these fascinating people (often erroneously called "Pennsylvania Dutch") who emigrated from Europe in the 17th and 18th centuries, found a home in the sympathetic commonwealth of William Penn, and settled primarily in and around Lancaster County. Primarily Amish and Mennonites, these are quiet and modest people whose lives of determined simplicity and whose passion for land seem totally anomalous in modern America. They continue to live lives of determined simplicity and agrarian focus that have all but disappeared.
The photographs by George Tice are some of the most compelling documentary imagery ever framed. In their unobtrusive vision, they capture the substance and the spirit of these self-reliant people. They also reflect over thirty years of gentle but persistent efforts to document their lives and record their customs. For George Tice, this has been a life work, and the breadth and generosity of his vision is manifest on every page.
First published in 1970 and here entirely reset with 39 new images added and every photograph reshot for duotone reproduction (as well as a new foreword by Sue Bender and a new afterword by Tice), this is not a "revised edition" but an entirely new book; one that will surely take its place among the classic documentary works of this century.
Customer Reviews:
This book is a classic! The photography is beautiful!.......1999-05-18
This book offers a glimpse into the world of the Amish which has basically remained unchanged. It is a world uncomplicated by todays technological advances. It is a world that I respect and admire. The photographs in this book brought me closer to the amish people and captured the beauty of the people and the land. George Tice is a master of photography.

Book Description
In the field of art and antiques, few books survive the test of time to become regarded as "classics." Monroe Fabian's 1978 edition of The Pennsylvania-German Decorated Chest is such a work. With more than two hundred fifty illustrations, this book is a visual feast of decorated chests. Now, more than twenty-five years later, this book still stands as the only significant work to be published on the subject of the Pennsylvania German decorated chest. It is the preeminent encyclopedia of Pennsylvania German blanket chests. Collectors, scholars and curators rely upon its images to identify the accepted standard of decorated chests. Fabian's thoroughness in identifying so many different chests means that readers have a suitable beginning point for comparing examples that they own or may come to view. With this edition, new color photography has been obtained or as many of the original chests as could be identified. Also where recent scholarship has produced new information, attributions and other information has been corrected. With a new foreword and updated photography, including an expanded color section and several new examples, this volume will be of interest to collectors, scholars, and all those who have a love of the richly decorated chests made by the Pennsylvania Germans. 8 1/2" x 11" 250 color and b&w photos

What a hoot!.......2000-05-03
Having grown up in Pennsylvania Dutch Country, I find that this is one book that I can relate to very well (or ferry vell). This book really hits the nail on the head when in comes to the PA Dutch trying to speak a language that just must not be in their genes to speak. I never really thought about it before, but the way of talking described in these 96 pages is exactly what I have grown up listening to. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a good laugh about people who talk funny and don't know it.

Book Description
There has never been a book like this intertwining the arts and artifacts of both the traditional and the evolving worlds. The Pennsylvania Germans are a remarkable people; some are among the most conservative of Americans, retaining a strong cultural identity to this day, while others have largely assimilated into the larger English world. Folk art and quilts are here, but so is the work of Precisionist painter Charles Demuth and Abstract Expressionist painter Franz Kline. Objects range from needlework, pottery, furniture, and glass to paper, paintings, and metals--including gold and silver! Here is a very personal and extensive historical text illustrated with the works of traditionalists, revivalists, and the avant garde displayed in over 350 color photographs. Pennsylvania German Arts has been written to be both informative and fun to read and is designed to showcase distinctive works of great beauty.

Actually a seller rating.......2006-11-24
I scrubbed out my poorly written comments for BookAlley but was unable to return to correct my mistake. Anyway I received the book in record time and not only is it in excellent condition but it has a lovelier cover than advertised on this page! Hearty thanks to the folks at BookAlley for their promptness, FIVE STARS for their service. Look forward to studying the book.
Get more from your garden with this book!.......2002-12-11
Once again, Lillian Too manages to compile feng shui information in a way that is thorough, interesting, and easy to understand. As the publisher of a weekly feng shui ezine, redlotusletter.com, I read A LOT of feng shui books. This book has it all and explains everything in a way that anyone can understand. Unfortunately when it comes to feng shui, many people overlook their garden. Gardens are a very important element in the complete feng shui of your home or office, as they are the "arms" that surround your location. Anyone seriously interested in feng shui, should not overlook this important area. What's wonderful is that Feng Shui for Gardens explains in very easy terms all the considerations such as shape of the lot, elements such as wet or dry areas, and how to activate areas of your garden to improve your life or business. Best of all, the book has many, many beautiful images to accompany the text, which I personally find to be very helpful because they demonstrate ideas visually. Like the spaghetti sauce commercial says, "it's all in here." From rock gardens, to water gardens, greenhouses, to fishponds, you'll find it covered in this book. The book also has an index (I love these!), a glossary, and sources for further information. In short, this is a wonderful book for anyone who wants to incorporate feng shui in their garden. It's on my bookshelf.

Inspiring.......2004-02-12
What a lovely, positive and uplifting piece of work. As a newcomer to the world of Feng Shui but an experienced gardener, I was so delighted that Lillian was so encouraging and informative. Give it a go, you too will be the recipient of all the benefits of this glorious way of life in your lush gardens.
Beautiful collection of ideas.......2004-01-30
I found this book a wonderful collection of ideas, rather than a 'narrative'. Almost every 2 page layout can stand on its own as a graphic/textual design. I particularly enjoyed the discussion of the creative and destructive cycles. This wasn't anything new, but it made sense for the first time.
The book strongly emphasizes the coordination of garden layout with a southern facing home entrance. There really are no alternatives offered. I found this a bit rigid at first, but the northern exposure of any garden wall will always have limited sunlight, so I concluded it might not be entirely unreasonable.
Ms Too minces few words when something strikes her as a bad idea. I think at one point, she concludes a misplaced water feature could lead to madness in the family. This is likely to offend some, but one won't be bored!
The book seems a good reference. Since every 2 page layout is so rich with metaphors and relations between text and graphics, it will be rewarding for study over and over, again.
I couldn't put it down.......2001-12-12
This book flows around its subject matter in much the way that the water dragon formula in Chapter Six identifies "auspicious" water flows with respect to the main doors facing different compass directions. It is well written and concise while still covering a lot of ground. I was fascinated with the collage illustrations. And I wouldn't be at all surprised if it turns out to be auspicious to read a book that has the word "auspicious" on every page.
Completely impractical for most gardeners........2001-08-12
If you just bought yourself a big empty lot and will be designing and building your house and garden, this is the perfect book for you. For the rest of us with small, non-rectangular lots and existing houses, this book is useless.
I've never understood why so many people have a hard time understanding feng shui, but reading this book illuminated me. My interest in feng shui comes from Karen Rauch Carter and Terah Kathryn Collins, both of whom take ancient philosophies and practically and usefully apply them to Western culture. Lillian Too's feng shui seems to me to be so rigid as to be impossible for the majority of us to implement.
For example, this book advises that water elements (ponds, fountains) should go on the north side of your property. Well, that's not where I want (or have room) for my fountain. I want a fountain--where else can I put it? This book doesn't say, leaving me with the impression I'm courting feng shui disaster to place a fountain anywhere else in my yard.
This book also advises that palm trees, because of their height and the shape of their leaves, are dangerous to have anywhere around your home. As a Southern Californian, I find this very hard to believe. I also don't care for the assertion that cacti and other desert plants are dry and "dead" and therefore bad to have in my garden. Am I supposed to purchase only those plants that grow in China, regardless of my own climate and soil conditions?
I had hoped to obtain some sound advice to help me design my garden, but this book is filled with inflexible dictates rather than helpful guidelines. There aren't many feng shui gardening books out there, but I'll wait for a good one to be published. I got my money back for this one.
Feng Shui for Gardens.......2001-04-07
The basic ideas in this book are good and the illustrations are great. However several subjects were lacking complete explaination and left me thinking I had missed something. The biggest disappointment for me though was the over-use of the work auspicious. By the end of the second chapter I caught myself counting how many times that word appeared on one page. I realize the word auspicious is a very powerful word, but in a 217 page book that word appears at least once on every page or at least it sure seemed so? I don't think I will be able to get past this and probably will return the book for another selection by a different author.

Book Description
Aristotle's De Animalibus was an important source of zoological knowledge both for the ancient Greeks and for the medieval Arabs and Europeans. The work was twice translated into Latin, once directly from the Greek by William of Moerbeke and once, by way of the intermediary of an existing Arabic translation, by Michael Scot. Of these, Scot's translation is the oldest. The De Animalibus is composed of three sections: `History of Animals' (10 books), `Parts of Animals' (4 books) and `Generation of Animals' (5 books). The present volume contains the first critical edition of Scot's translation of the last section. Editions of his translations of the two preceding sections are in preparation. The volume includes very complete Latin-Arabic and Arabic-Latin word indexes and, as a supplement, the first complete word index to the original Greek text of `Generation of Animals'. The volume for the first time makes available to the scholarly world a version of Aristotle's `Generation of Animals' that has long been one of the main sources of knowledge in Europe on the subject. Being a faithful translation of a translation produced by a Syriac-speaking Christian, the text also contributes to our knowledge of Middle Arabic.
