Includes the history as well as the details of early auto road development, and tells the tale of the Yellowstone Trail with excellent maps and period documents.

Books That Deliver What the Title States/Implies.......2006-03-13
Dr Dehgan's book is about as complete a guide as one can find for the state of Florida. It is extremely well organized combining the most useful information concerning a hugh variety of plants with a very intuitive format.
Nice Reference.......2005-04-05
I bought this book as a requirement for a plant identification course (Dr Dehgan as an instructor). It contains information about every plant you could want for landscaping a tropical yard. As a reviewer stated earlier though, it contains only line art so it isn't really very visually impressive. For a gardener (or hobbyist) who already has an idea what plants he wants for a landscape and isn't trying to decide by looking at pictures I suspect this would be a great reference because it typically contains a full page of specs for each plant it lists. If all this information was converted to a database and made searchable by plant feature, what a wonder it would be. For the average layperson though (i.e. me), I think it has limited usefulness as a stand alone reference and is best combined with a nice pictorial guide. If this book had color plates it would hands down be a 5 star rating. Even at a lower rating than what I scored it, it would still be a great value and a worthwhile addition to your library for the modest price.
black and white sketches..........2003-06-03
Very disappointed in this book....Black and white sketches in the 21st century don't cut it. I want to see a photo of the plants described. The information provided is good if you live in Florida....but for anywhere else...the recommendations are sketchy. This is the only book from Amazon that i have ever returned.
Fantastic resource for the subtropical Gulf Coast gardener!.......1999-10-04
This is the first book I have found which provides useful information about gardening on the Gulf of Mexico. I live on the Texas coast, Galveston Island to be exact, and the weather and climate here is truly special! Forget the "zone 9" stuff. This text provides information about plants which will survive--and thrive--here on a barrier island where many "normal" plants perish. "Salt tolerance" is listed for each plant as well, which is so helpful as I live two blocks from the Gulf. Thank you, thank you Mr. Dehgan for this book which has made such a difference for me. I don't buy plants anymore without checking here first! I believe this book is a "must" for coastal residents all along the Gulf.

Gandhara, with its wide variety of architectural remains and sculptures, has for many decades perplexed students of South and Central Asia. Kurt Behrendt in this volume for the first time and convincingly offers a description of the development of 2nd century B.C.E. to 8th century C.E. Buddhist sacred centers in ancient Gandhara, today northwest Pakistan.
Regional variations in architecture and sculpture in the Peshawar basin, Swat, and Taxila are discussed. At last a chronological framework is given for the architecture and the sculpture of Gandhara, but also light is being shed on how relic structures were utilized through time, as devotional imagery became increasingly significant to Buddhist religious practice.
With an important comparative overview of architectural remains, it is indispensable for all those interested in the development of the early Buddhist tradition of south and central Asia and the roots of Buddhism elsewhere in Asia.

Seriously disappointing waste of money.......2005-03-12
I did not ever think I would have to give any book a single star and if zero stars had been possible it would have qualified. But I guess the bibliography is worth a star. The text certainly isn't. The book deals only with a tiny portion of the material and then does it embarrassingly badly. There is also absolutely nothing new in the book but is merely a collection of information available in old works with little understanding of recent work. I suspect that the author does not know much about Buddhism, let alone Buddhist architecture - but it is hard to tell because neither topic is to be found in this book. If you want to spend a small fortune (look at the price!) on a half way adequate bibiliography that you could easily put together in a day or so of basic research, fine. But is you want a book on Buddhism, on Buddhist architecture, or on Buddhist architecture in Gandhara, forget this one.
