Informative, but Heavy.......2007-01-04

Dog breeding is an art as well as a science, and this book gives a pretty good explanation as to why this is the case. It gives a thorough overview of what we know of canine genetics, discussing physical traits, genetic conditions, etc, and what we consider our best guesses are for the inheritance patterns of various alleles.

But unless your breed of choice happens to be Weimeraners, you won't find many specifics in this book. If the breed you're interested in has fairly typical canine genes, you'll find more here than if your breed is more obscure. Moreover, the book necessarily goes into Genetics fairly deeply; I've a degree in Biology and I have more genetics background than the average joe, and *I* found the book a little overwhelming. I think it would be heavy reading for most people, especially if they do not have some basic idea of how the mechanics of Genetics work.

It's a good reference, but nothing I'm just dying to read. I got much more out of certain breed-specific books.

Excellent book for any serious dog breeder........2006-07-28

This book should be required reading for anyone serious about breeding quality dogs. Easy to read with lots of valuable information, but detailed enough for the experienced breeder.

UGH! FRUSTRATION!!!.......2006-07-15

I know the very subject matter of this book is difficult and involved, but unless you are at least slightly well versed in the subject or have a steel trap of a mind and remember everything you ever read, this will be very frustrating!

I was constantly re-reading to try to make sense of it all and trying to memorize the terms & their meanings. Even when I was successful, it was a short-lived accomplishment because the next paragraph introduced something else just as complicated or more often worse.

It isn't a total loss, though. There is some interesting dog/wolf history... even the history of science & genetics was interesting.

I don't think the average dog breeder looking for an introduction to genectics would find this an easy read or get a lot out of this book unless you use it more as a study mannual & had some to help guide you through it.

This one is on my shelf to be re-read at a later date.

I hope you have a better time of it than I did!!!

Invaluable resource.......2006-01-30

Every single dedicated breeder should have the knowledge found in this book.
In addition to important information on genetics, it has very interesting information on the evolution of dogs and a great chapter on behavior which even goes into detail on the stages of development in puppies and effects of environment on behavior.
There is excellent information about hereditary problems, genetic disorders, and even mate selection. There is a list at the back of every breed with their hereditary disorders listed and mode of inheritance when known, which should be especially helpful for breeders. There is also breed-specific information on coat colors and alleles- which, by the way, used to look like an exotic foreign language to me and now makes sense!

I had a very simple understanding of Mendelian genetics before I read this (from reading "The Joy of Breeding Your Own Show Dog by Anne Seranne- another great book.) This book made my understanding complete.

Before I read this book I thought that genetics were going to be difficult and boring to learn, but the author does a great job of keeping the subject interesting. The preface mentions that the author had her breeder friend, who was confused and intimidated by genetics, read the manuscript and point out areas that were especially confusing to a beginner or areas that needed clarification, etc. Maybe this is one of the reasons why this book is so effective.

A great, absolute must-have book that I highly recommend!

I never thought I could understand everything I need to know about canine genetics, but this book is very comprehensive & is written in a very concise, easy to read/understand format. It's perfect for breeders or anyone who wants to know more about genetic diseases, etc.

This is a cute picture book about a hamster named Hamtaro. He is a birthday present for a girl named Yukari. He learns about humans and about being a pet in a series of short stories. The pictures are adorable and the stories are fun. Hamtaro narrates the stories himself. There is also a little bit of information about real hamsters after every story. This is a good book for little kids and anyone who likes the Hamtaro TV show.

I picked this book up last year hopeing that maybe one or two of the younger kids on my p.m. route would look at it for a few minutes. (p.m. route is wild beyond control!)--I was amazed at the attention it got. Kids sat hypnotized by it. Yes,, they found them all; but that didn't seem to matter. They passed it from one to another, and even the older kids took the time to look and talk to the younger. This year they asked me to bring it again. I know the Pokemon craze is slowing quite a bit, but believe me, any book that can quiet a bus for even a short time is great in my opinion. I'm buying #2 & #3 Find Pokemon NOW.

"Let's Find pokemon! 3" has alot of great and new pokemon in it. I am a young person of 13 and would like all pokemon fans to know that Kazunori has done it again! If you like pokemon,then you will like to find your favorites in this wonderful book as well as some not yet seen. It is a must for all pokemon trainers like myself. I think the book is the best yet and hope that you will find it a great addition to your collection! I give the book an A+ for all the work Kazunori has done to expand the pokemon legend! I hope he makes more of the pokemon series books like this one which I will be sure to buy! This author is a real genius of imagination which will not disappoint the pokemon fan.

Far too easy even for the youngest kids........2000-10-19

I bought this book counting on the "Where's Waldo" style and difficulty. However, it falls somewhat short. The artist and/or publisher neglected the fact that kids have a lot of time on their hands. Especially when my wife and I want a few hours of peace and quiet. I'm not sure what the author/artist was aiming for really.

Sorry Nintendo, more market research would have been a plus. This book only lasts one nap, maybe two. Each session of the book gets shorter and shorter and the main appeal is the Pokémon characters. Nintendo is falling into the old rut of, "What can we market with Pokémon characters?" Instead of, "What should we market with Pokémon characters?"

Pokemon for pre-readers.......2000-07-18

My son just turned five and can not read, but he loves Pokemon. This book is a Where is Waldo type book and can be used by non-readers. On each page you have to find Pokemon while going through a maze. This book is more of a game then a reading book. I highly recommend this book for pre-reader Pokemon lovers to get them interested in looking at books on their own.

Beautiful book, but extremely easy.......2000-06-10

This is a beautiful book, but much too easy to find the "hidden" Pokemon. This was my 4-year-old son's first "find the character" book; he finished the book in one afternoon's car ride. Thankfully he's still enjoyed simply looking at the pictures since they are Pokemon.

The timing info in this book is useful, if you live in Michigan's average area. Skip it if you live in Northern Michigan. Very little of the timing will apply to you. One other thing I didn't like was how many chemicals (of various sorts) they tell you to dump on your lawn. Every month it seems like they're telling you it's time to put one or two more on your lawn or in your beds. This type of gardening is not for me, and it scares me to think that people just strating with gardening might read this and think that they are all necessary.

Organization could be better.......2003-05-03

The information seems pretty thorough, but Fizzell has organized the book mainly by types of plants -- vegetables, annuals, perennials, trees, and so on -- and then month-by-month under each group. So when you're trying to figure out what to do in May, you have to look up "May" under "Annuals," then "May" under "Perennials," then "May" under "Trees" .... I'd much rather he'd used the months as main categories, and each type of plant as a subcategory of those.

And Fizzell is pesticide- and herbicide-crazy! Forget it if you're an organic gardener. (I'm still looking for a book on organic gardening in Michigan.)

Useful guide to the Michigan gardening year.......2001-03-23

"Month-By-Month Gardening in Michigan" is split into chapters on types of plants, e.g. Annuals, Bulbs, Herbs, Houseplants, Lawns, etc. Each chapter is then split into the following subchapters: "Introduction", "Planting Chart", "January", "February", ... "December". Here is how to use this book:

Suppose you live in Michigan and want to know whether to prune your climbing roses in March. Turn to Chapter 7, "Roses" and the subchapter called, "March". This subchapter has sections on "Planning", "Planting and Transplanting", "Rx Care for Your Roses", etc. In the section entitled "Pruning", the author recommends, "Prune climbing rose plants to fit their supports. Remove thin canes, and pinch back overly vigorous canes to force branching."

This book is very easy to use, as you can see from the above paragraph. I used to live in Winter Hardiness Zone 3 near Cadillac and am now a Zone 6 gardener down near Lake St. Claire , so I know from experience that you might have to adjust Fizzell's time-table of recommendations by as much as three or four weeks, depending on your specific zone.

Organic gardeners probably won't want to use some of the author's "Rx Care" suggestions (Fizzell recommends actual products such as "Orthene" and "D-Con"), but other than that, "Month-by-Month Gardening in Michigan" should prove useful to all of us who garden in this state, whether it be the 'helpful hints', the planting charts, or the month-specific instructions for tending to your water garden.

This is a handy reference for any Michigan gardener (like myself) who needs an occasional reminder not to start her pepper plants in January.

It's rather sad that not only is this book out of print and absurdly hard-to-find, but that finding any generally available record of Fornasetti's work seems to be an impossible goal nowadays. Pretty much everything that is missing from the contemporary world--wit, whimsy, engaging complexity, craft, imagination, humanity, a sense of history (sorry, it's a long list of absentees!)--can be found in this man's remarkable graphic work. How to describe it? Well, think of old architectural prints, renderings of sea life, hot air balloons, astrological symbols, the sun with a warm countenance, the visual vocabulary of the Renaissance recombined and recyled and reused with a mildly surrealist but distinctly upbeat edge. The result is a style of design that wraps the present in the past, sometimes almost literally, always lovingly.

Hardly a review, I mean where will you get the book without spending $100 (although I feel it's worth it, the book is excellent and packed with examples of his work). Do a Fornasetti Google for images and revel in the stuff. A bit of that and you may be willing to spring for the book or pester a publisher.

very impressive.......2000-06-18

When we discovered plates, chairs and other decorative gadgets from Fornasetti some years ago, we did not imagine, my wife and I, that a real artist lied behind all these creations. I was really impressed when I discovered in that book the beautiful face of the artist and when I learned that he would never create any more because he already passed away. Fornassetti art is mainly decorative. It pleased every body because it is an harmonius equilibrium between classical inspiration and to-day printing technologies. If you do not know where to buy furniture inspired by Fornasetti, buy this book and place it on a coffee table. Everybody will want to read it.
