2 out of 5 stars Includes contradicting info and inaccurate info!.......2007-01-21

The inaccurate info in this book is enough to cancel out it's value almost altogether, in my opinion. The fact that it includes information which I know to be false(both from my own experience and from the multitude of other resources which contradict it) made it difficult to determine whether or not to believe any info in it that I had not previously heard or read. And the book isn't even that old! It should have much better info than it does!
For instance on one page it says cat and dog food can be given as treats to rats, yet on a different page it lists them both as "harmful foods". The previous reviewer covers most of the other inaccuracies. The only thing I really found valuable in the book was the descriptions of how rats live in the wild and what colony life is like. But I haven't read the same info anywhere else, so I have no way of verifying whether it is accurate or not.
Bottom line: buy a different rat guide, this one is NOT worth the money or the risk of following bad/inaccurate advice!

3 out of 5 stars There is alot of bad mixed with good advice in this book.......2000-05-18

This book is a mix of bad and good rat advice. I will first list the good things about this book. #1 The description of the life of wild rats in their colonies. It's accurate. #2 The pictures : They are by far the best pictures of pet rats I've seen in a book, (so far) #3 It has some OK to Good info on caring for rats but there are other books with much better information like Debbie Ducommuns Rats! #4 The book stresses the need to have more than just one rat. Thats important. The problems with this book are: #1 The author makes blanket statements against any breeding of rats totally not taking into account the fact that there are people who are responsible breeders out there. The author also doesn't explain what needs to be done to responsibly breed, such as before you even think of breeding make sure that you can place all the babies in loving homes, things like that. #2 The author recommends pine bedding, which is well known to have ill effects on rats just like cedar does. #3 On page 36, her logic as to why the life expectency of rats probably can't be increased is muddled and odd. She also states that previously the natural life expectency of rats was thought to be six to seven years. When did anyone think the life expectency of rats was that long? , I've read most books on rats and they all say the average life expectency of rats are two to three years, while some may live to four or five. Anyway this book should be bought with caution, there is alot of good info mixed with bad in this book

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful For Novice and Experienced Rat Fanciers!.......2001-04-15

I have read the book The Proper Care Of Fancy Rats (t.f.h.) - repeatedly - and have found the information to be invaluable. It covers basic care, illnesses, varieties and standards, breeding and some of the basics of rat genetics. It also includes a lot of beautiful full color photos. I've read a few other books on rodent care, none of which were as detailed as this (those books all ended up in a used book store). I would HIGHLY suggest that every rat owner purchase this book and keep it handy. Its easy to follow and covers all the bases!

5 out of 5 stars The "Encyclopedia Rattica".......2000-10-19

More than just a guide to the proper care of rats, Nick Mays' excellent book is also a history of human-rat relations, an introduction to rat genetics, and a full color guide to many of the breeds of "fancy" rats. Well-written and logically organized, this is the best kind of reference book: both informative and fun to read. Although the book's historical survey of the "rat fancy" concentrates primarily on the United Kingdom, this fascinating story will surely be appreciated by rat lovers throughout the world.

Mays not only creates an accurate and affectionate portrait of the domesticated rat, but he also creates a comparable portrait of those rat fanciers who have for generations taken these intelligent and personable creatures into our homes and hearts. This book is a tribute to the strength of the bonds that can exist between members of different species.

5 out of 5 stars The best rat book in the universe 8/8/99.......1999-08-09

I had at one time purchised This book, And i didn't have the money to keep it so I took it back. Days after, I yearned to have it back. So I went back to the store were I had bought it and they told me they Didn't have it anymore. I felt so sad, and up to this day I havn't been able to find it anywere. Now that I found it, I will be sure to buy it, and to keep it. I say it is the very most helpful, Wonderful book you could ever have on The Care and Keeping of Fancy rats. -Brie

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for fanciers!.......1999-05-25

The first time I read this book, I was astounded! Mr. Mays is a true expert, presenting the information in an easy to read, clear style. Where other authors have failed, Mr. Mays includes almost everything on breeding, illnesses, and showing. I highly recommend this book to a novice rat owner or shower. Good work, Mr. Mays!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR RAT OWNERS!.......1999-03-17

Nick has done it again! This outing proves to be his best, by far. Thoroughly readable and very enjoyable.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent how-to book on tropical garden plants!.......2005-07-19

This book is an excellent collection of tropical garden plant types and the zones they do best in. It will give you an idea of the zones many tropical plants and sub-tropical plants will do best in, however, some will even do well outside of the specified zones if they are in a microclimate. It also contains information on how to propogate many of the plants therein.

If I had one bit of advice for the author, it would be interesting to re-organize the book by zone, such that those who live in various zones could easily find which tropical style plants are best suited for their particular zone (as well as which are in an adjacent zone and therefore might make it if given a bit of a micro-climate).

Oveall, a great addition to my tropical gardening library!

5 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING BOOK ON TROPICAL GARDENING.......2003-08-04

This is the best book on tropical gardening I have ever found. It has beautiful pictures & also lists what plants to group together to make a showplace out of your yard. Also tells you which plants are cold hardy! The cold hardiness is something that a lot of books fail to mention, which means constantly looking through reference books for more info. This book goes with me everytime I go to purchase plants. Excellent book!

5 out of 5 stars Best Book for the Tropics.......2004-02-13

This is the only book I have been able to find that is specific to orchid growing in the tropics.
The kinds of orchids this book gives details on are the ones that grow best in my particular location: tropical Hilo, Hawaii. I'm definitely a hobby orchidist, not into nomenclature, mericloning, or anything fancy like that; I buy plants in flower that I like and always have luck with getting them to grow and bloom again in these ideal conditions. Nonetheless, I do enjoy reading about species, hybrids, and methods of propagation, and this book has a lot of interesting details for more serious or commercial growers. The illustrations are wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for all orchid growers beginning to advanced........2000-03-24

Wonderful finally a book that clearly shows disease processes and treatments with excellent photography. The anatomy and growing instructions are complete and easy to understand. It is written so that anyone can grow orchids from terrace to orchid house. I find it exceptional in that it takes into consideration the hot humid condions that exist here in So. Fla. (zone 10).

I live in Louisiana, and aquired about eight plumeria plants about two months ago. Since south Louisiana is sub tropical, the cultural conditions are similar to those in Hawaii. By reading the book and following the cultural info., I'mm happy to report that five of my plants have buds and all have and are putting out new leaves.

Lush colors, unique propagation techniques, variation in shapes and size, make this book a must-have in your library. I couldn't put it down and was awed by the photography as well as the amount of time and effort Mr. Little has given to his work. I hope that his son, Clark Little, continues in his stead. As one who dabbles in rhododendrons, this book is inspiring.

I was very surprised at how much I learned about Cannas. I have approximately 40 different cannas. I learned more from reading the book than I have from raising cannas for the last 10 years. I also discovered some new ones that I plan on ordering.

Ian Cooke's Gardener's Guide To Growing Cannas presents a canna expert's complete review of the plant, from an A-Z listing of varieties to the history of cannas, their cultivation and species, and cannas in the garden. Gardener's Guide To Growing Cannas is an appealing, colorful, comprehensive guide which gardeners and horticulturalists will appreciate.

5 out of 5 stars The only book dedicated to Cannas.......2001-12-26

This book deserves more than five stars! I had searched for a book on Cannas for a long time. As Ian Cooke points out, this book is the only comprehensive work published on Cannas since 1903. It has become one of my treasured plant bibles, along side with "Heliconia: An Identification Guide" by Fred Berry & W. John Kress and "Exotica" by Alfred Graf.

I live in the tropics and Cannas are indispensable in adding colours to an otherwise overpowering green garden. This book is aimed at gardeners in temperate climate countries, who have a more challenging task in growing Cannas. Ian Cooke is obviously an authority on these plants. The book has valuable information on Canna species, cultivation including common pests and diseases, and propagation by rhizome division and growing from seeds. There is even a list of websites/nurseries dedicated to this genus and is an alternative avenue for sourcing of new species by keen gardeners.

Great book. It gives the common name, the latin name and the Hawaiian name of plants we find here in Hawai'i. 416 pages chock full of easy to read and apply methods of growing Hawaiian plants. Lavishly illustrated, generous size of 9 by 11 inches, this is a must have for growers, artists and students of Hawaiian plants. This is the best $45 I have spent on books in a long time. Thanks to the author and publisher.

As the interest in gardening grows every year, so does the desire to grow beautiful, but previously umfamiliar plants and flowers. Many North American gardeners dream of picking passion fruits and gathering ladyslipper orchids from their backyard gardens; Raymond Foster shows how those dreams can come to life. This practical guide is the first illustrated how-to book for those who want to grow more than daisies and chrysanthemums.

Given the right information, amateur gardeners can create the delicate environments needed by rare wildflowers and tropical plants to thrive in seemingly unsuitable climates. The author describes the wide variety of exotic flora which can easily be grown in the garden and cool greenhouse. His selection includes blubs and herbs, climbers and sprawlers, fruit, shrubs, and trees, and ranges from wild ginger and birds of paradise to jasmine, figs, and papayas.

This highly readable guide contains sound advice on soil preparation, propagation, pruning, and on techniques that stimulate the extreme habitats required by the more intriguing plants, such as the "living stones" of the African desert.

As the jungles and woodlands of the world begin to disappear, the survival of these fragile plants and flowers will depend on the adventurous gardener. With the help of these simple and clear instructions, gardeners can pursue the cultivation of Edens - they can grow mangoes among their apple trees, African trumpet lilies alongside their roses, and mistletoe on their atbors.
