Dog Heroes.......2007-03-24
I sat down and could not put this down until I finished reading. Anybody who loves animals (especially dogs) will love this. I cried at several of the dog stories.
Phenomenal job on an inspiring subject.......2007-02-22
Nona Kilgore Power signed her book at BookExpo America and bought some of the hero dogs along -- the animals and their handlers received well-deserved respect from people in the long autograph line.
The author has done a fine job collecting beautiful photos of the dogs and interviewing their handlers on what they did at Ground Zero, the Pentagon, Fresh Kills and in Shanksville, Pa. There is undeniable heartache in the fact that so few dogs found bodies let alone survivors. But the search was necessary and the fact that some search teams couldn't hide their disappointment just demonstrates that courage requires forging ahead even if the outlook is bleak.
Some of the notable stories here include that of Piper, a shepherd hero from New Jersey who helped find the bodies of 15 firefighters.
More often, the dogs' role was like that of golden retriever Bretagne (Brittany), from Texas. Her handler Denise Corliss relates in the book, "Sometimes she would leave my side and go sit next to a firefighter. Not just anyone ... she was very deliberate about whom she chose." Often she found a silent firefighter and joined him in a solemn moment.
Corliss remembered how unexpected the dogs' roles were. "One man especially stands out. He started petting Britanny and told me he didn't even like dogs. He knelt down beside her and told me his best friend was missing. His friend really loved dogs and would be very upset if he didn't pet this dog."
Other dogs consoled the families of victims at the Pentagon.
"Dog Heroes of September 11th" is certain to inspire more Americans to get involved in canine search and rescue and to help us remember those dogs, many of whom have retired or passed away in the past five years, who didn't hesitate, despite conditions infinitely worse than those they had seen in training, to search deep voids in hopes of finding people they could help.
Inspiring.......2007-02-12
If you're a fan of K9 helpers like me, you'll love this book. It was a great look at so many dogs, their trainers, and their stories. Truly great to see and read about all these dogs, their efforts make you feel warm inside :)

Veteran columnist Molly Ivins, a rare and highly irreverent Texas liberal, is back with a collection of columns gathered from a rich and varied career covering some of the best source material a writer with a knack for whimsy could wish for: politicians. In Who Let the Dogs In, Ivins offers her thoughts on politicos from the Reagan era through the administration of George W. Bush (whom she first nicknamed "Shrub" way back in his early Texas days). While Ivins is of the lefty persuasion, she is far from doctrinaire, which helps separate her from the scores of lockstep pundits on either side: she credits Bill Clinton with being a brilliant politician and condemns the policies of Bush as being terrible for average Americans, but also presents stinging criticisms of Clinton's failed initiatives and defends Bush as being smarter than most give him credit for. Her words are strong, her writing is clear, and her thoughts are well organized. Of course, most people remember a Molly Ivins column for the humor, and we get to witness her firing missiles at low-flying targets like Newt Gingrich and Ross Perot and describing Bush's puzzling lead over Al Gore among men in the 2000 campaign, "One guy played football, went to Vietnam, and is notoriously emotionally distant. The other guy was a cheerleader who got into a National Guard unit through family influence, lost money in the oil business, traded Sammy Sosa and is now sliding through a presidential race on charm. Do I not get American men, or what?" Who Let the Dogs In lacks some of the focus of her Shrub and Bushwhacked simply because it's about a whole generation of political characters as opposed to one memorable Texan, but such broader perspective also affords an opportunity to better understand America's recent history and maybe get a few laughs while doing it. --John Moe
Book Description
The dazzling, inimitable Molly Ivins is back, with her own personal Hall of Fame of America’s most amazing and outlandish politicians–the wicked, the wise, the witty, and the witless–drawn from more than twenty years of reporting on the folks who attempt to run our government (in some cases, into the ground).
Who Let the Dogs In? takes us on a wild ride through two decades of political life, from Ronald Reagan, through Big George and Bill Clinton, to our current top dog, known to Ivins readers simply as Dubya. But those are just a few of the political animals who are honored and skewered for our amusement. Ivins also writes hilariously, perceptively, and at times witheringly of John Ashcroft, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, H. Ross Perot, Tom DeLay, Ann Richards, Al Gore, Jimmy Carter, and the current governor of Texas, who is known as Rick “Goodhair” Perry.
Following close on the heels of her phenomenally successful
Bushwhacked and containing an up-to-the-minute Introduction for the campaign season,
Who Let the Dogs In? is political writing at its best.
Customer Reviews:
Molly was the best.......2007-06-12
This book is typical of the late Molly Ivins' spirited humor. She came to the college where I taught and delivered a lecture a few years before she died. Every educated person in Kansas City filled the auditorium to capacity--many students had to sit onstage with her. But the educated audience demonstrated appropriate behavior in the face of her pilloring right-wing politicians: they laughed until their tongues came out their noses and they fell out of their chairs. She accomplished a four-year liberal arts education in just over an hour.
If only America had listened to Molly!.......2006-02-07
Using her trademark witty writing, Molly Ivins delivered up another awesome collection of political writings. She was the one who recognized the threat which George W. Bush posed to society long before a majority of the public (including us in the Lone Star State) knew who he was.
Ivins also knows when to criticize her 'friends' making this book so much more than a 'bash Republicans' reader. Loads of credible facts are tucked into her home-spun writing. This to me is the biggest difference between progressives and the far right; we argue on the facts and in reality while they want to mislead the American public into despair using whatever fabrication is most convenient at the moment.
However, I wish this book had (at least some) new material inside or 'extras' given her tremendous insight and foresight into Texas and American politics. Instead, it is only a collection of her past writings, sufficient in most cases but a letdown specifically because we are talking Molly Ivins.
Already owning her books, I subsequently passed on this title to a friend who is also a 'Molly fan' but is on a much tighter-book buying budget. Yet, I still admire that she reminds the world that we Texas liberals are out there!
Hilarious but interesting.......2005-06-18
When it comes to needing a straight shooting Texas liberal who is not afraid of the BIG BAD GOP, look no further than Molly Ivins. Combined with wit and humor, Ivins gives the left out facts about the conservative cronies you won't find on MSNBC, CBS, NBC, ABC, FOX, or any other mainstream media outlet. Give this book a read when you need some political humor or are sick and tired of the rightwing fascists in the media and government. The more you know about these dirty conservative elitists, the more you'll think twice before giving them the keys to govern.
Interesting and comprehensive.......2005-05-07
Molly Ivins is one of the best political authors and columnists out there today, in my opinion. "Who Let the Dogs In?" is one of the better political books I've read recently. It's interesting and has a lot of information about the key political figures of our time-a must read for anyone interested in our current political scene. I, also, enjoy Molly's humorous touches. She knows her subject and is funny, too.
I did note, however, that the on cover illustration of
George W. Bush as a dog is that of a chihuahua. I thought
Ross Perot was "the chihuahua". Bush should've been done as a pitbull as that would be more in keeping with his stubborn personality. The other illustrations of various political figures as dogs are definitely worth looking at, though.
Bright and funny writer hamstrung by her prejudices.......2005-04-17
Many years ago I enjoyed reading Ivins' columns but unforunately her brand of independent liberalism has turned into just another mainstream media voice parroting the Democrats. Her personal hatred of George Bush has become distracting and embarrasing. Strangely enough she reminds me of Rush Limbaugh. When he began doing political commentary on the radio Limbaugh was an independent with a conservative streak and was comfortable attacking Republicans. Similarly Ivins was originally an independent with a liberal streak who was comfortable attacking Democrats. Now Limbaugh is as firmly ensconced in the Republican camp as Ivins is in the Democratic camp.
What a shame.

Great!.......2004-03-01
This bright and colorful book is a great way to introduce your young American reader to the Pledge of Allegiance. The clauses of the Pledge are presented one to each two pages - printed large and accompanied by several large and highly entertaining pictures that accompany the thought behind the words. Great!
After the Pledge, there are pages explaining it line-by-line, and then some great information on the American flag. This is a very nice book, one that you will be proud to share with your young reader. My family highly recommends it to yours!
The Pledge of Allegiance by Scholastic Inc.......2004-02-07
Very well-written book. It could use more historical information about the topic addressed. For example, the early Pledge of Allegiance was the origin of the stiff-arm salute. The Pledge was written (1892) by Francis Bellamy, cousin to an infamous author of the time, Edward Bellamy, and they were both self-proclaimed socialists in the Nationalism movement and promoted military socialism. They wanted government to take over all schools and impose robotic chanting to flags. The Pledge was the origin of the salute of the National Socialist German Workers Party. American socialists (Edward Bellamy teamed with the Theosophical Society) also bear some blame for German socialism's notorious flag symbol, which evolved into overlapping S-letters for socialism under the National Socialist German Workers Party. The Pledge's early salute was not an ancient Roman salute, and the 'ancient Roman salute' myth came from the Pledge Of Allegiance. It is amazing that books don't examine the issue of whether the pledge should be dropped entirely, especially for young children in government schools. The socialist dogma led to the socialist Wholecost: 60 million dead under the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics; 50 million under the Peoples' Republic of China; 20 million under the National Socialist German Workers Party. It might be the most tragic part of world history.
Helpful book!.......2002-01-03
My students are immigrants or children of immigrants learning English. They have to say the pledge every day but may get the words wrong and certainly don't comprehend it. This book takes out some of the guess work and helps them understand what is going on and what people are saying. It brings them comfort and relief.
The Pledge of Allegiance.......2001-12-21
This book is beautifully illustrated with photographs that are sure to spark discussion. The text (the Pledge of Allegiance) is broken into meaningful phrases that make the reader reflect on the words that we sometimes rush through or take for granted. I highly recommend purchasing the big book version for lower grade classroom use. A gem!
A picture book with great photos and interesting historical.......2001-12-06
This picture book has very colorful photos of our country and our fellow citizens. The pages are spread by the breaks in text that we know from reciting the pledge orally at school. Children are from different races. Scenes from all over America and even an astronaut on the moon holding the American flag are depicted.
In the back there are small photos that were depicted in the book with explanations about where they are and other factual information to explain the contents of the photographs. The entire pledge is rewritten in the back pages and an explanation of who wrote it, why, and when. The meaning of why we recite the pledge is given. Facts about the American flag's changes over the years and facts about the proper way to display a flag, and on what days, are included.
A beautiful book with great information that every child should be exposed to.

How has the state of animals improved in the last half century? How has it worsened? Where are gains made on behalf of animals under threat? In one landmark volume, distinguished scholars and experts examine these questions-and offer often-provocative answers-for farm animals, companion animals, laboratory animals, zoo animals, and wildlife worldwide.

Outstanding presentation of material in brief.......2003-01-11
I was surprised at how well organized and comprehensive this book really is. It is large format (not a small paperback) and includes charts, graphs, photos, and well-explained statistics. This would be perfect for writing reports for high school or college classes on the subject of animal rights.

Book Description
In this comforting and imaginative tale, Malachy Mouse and his family are newcomers to New York City, having moved into their basement cubby hole just days before September 11th. After the terrorist attack, they are evacuated from their home and decide to stay with cousin Joel and his family. But their cousin works in one of the towers and he does not return home. With the children traumatized, the adults decide to show them all the ways others are working to protect them. They visit firefighters, police, rescue workers, rescue dogs, medical personnel, airport security, and a military base. Then they discuss ways they can help, too.
Compassionate and accessible, this book helps children open up about their fears and provides parents and all those who work with children a tool with which to calm youngsters' anxieties and lighten the burdens on small shoulders.
Customer Reviews:
Perfect dialogue opener for an important discussion.......2002-11-20
There is so much that goes unanswered inside the mind of a child, especially when they experience a traumatic event. Since the tragic events of September 11th, children have even more fears and worries about their own family's protection.
The book, "The Mouse Family's Most Terrible, Terrifying Day," by Dr. Joan S. Dunphy, was written specifically to help bring some peace of mind to young children. Today's world is indeed a scary place, and our children are very much affected by tragic events such as September 11th.
This book is about a little mouse and his family who have moved to New York City and experience September 11th. Throughout the book, many questions are answered for the young mouse.
MyParenTime.com recommends the book, "The Mouse Family's Most Terrible, Terrifying Day" - it allows parents to begin a dialogue with their children -- not only about the tragic events of September 11th, but about other traumatic events as well. Through the colorful illustrations and thoughtful story, children are introduced to all the good people who exist in the world, and what these good people are doing in order to protect them and thereby lessen their fears.

The opportunities and options for veterinarians are more varied than ever. Today's veterinary student can choose to train for a career in environmental problem-solving, local community health, food resource management, zoo animal care, space and marine biology, and wildlife preservation, in addition to the more traditional small, or large-animal practices. Last year, only 35 percent of all applications to vet schools resulted in an acceptance, so the choices begin with early preparation for these highly selective admissions standards. Students, parents, mentors, and counselors need to help make sure that such important decisions are based on sound knowledge, and Veterinary Medical School Admission Requirements is an invaluable source for essential information. This compact volume, which is updated annually, gives a general overview of the application process, including detailed information on the Veterinary Medical Colleges Application Service and residency requirements. Each of the thirty-one veterinary medical schools in the United States and Canada provides information about campuses, deadlines, specific prerequisites, expenses, and special programs. Extensive tables provide data on veterinary medical applications and acceptances over the last nineteen years. Tuition for one of the top veterinary medical schools can cost as much as $20,000 a year-make sure it's money well spent. The Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges coordinates the affairs of the twenty-seven U.S. Veterinary Medical Colleges, four Canadian Colleges of Veterinary Medicine, Departments of Veterinary Science and Comparative Medicine, and the animal medical centers. In addition the association fosters the membership's teaching, research, and service missions both nationally and internationally.

Book Description
This book deals with the Old Testament theme of the vengeance of YHWH, discussing both the exegetical and theological aspects of a biblical notion that until now has received far too little attention in scholarly research. After an exploration of the Umwelt use of the root NQM (vengeance/avenge), in the main part of the study all relevant Old Testament texts are dealt with in a thorough exegetical investigation. This leads to a theological outline which stresses the important place and positive function of God's vengeance in the Old Testament revelation. The theories of G.E. Mendenhall, P. Volz and K. Koch with regard to the theme of vengeance are criticized. Of special interest are the additional sections on the issues of blood vengeance and the imprecatory prayers.
