Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book!.......1999-01-14
The most useful book around for help in introducing multispecies in the household and enjoying a peaceful animal family. Wonderful advice on scheduling, bonding, cleaning, communication, etc. The rabbit information is up-to-date and accurate. Cynthia Miller knows her stuff!
A great book on introducing new pets to your household.......1998-11-11
This is a great guide on how to introduce any kind of pet into an existing pet household. It gives tips on how to introduce cat to cat, dog to bird, bird to rabbit - you get the idea. I feel this book will help reduce the number of pets relinquished to animal shelters because it will help insure that new pets will be successfully introduced and remain in their new home. The book is very attractive and produced with quality materials. I, who purchase very few books, bought this as a reference book and recommend it highly. Judy Coene of Bugsy's Animal Network
A must have for the multi-pet household!.......1998-05-31
This book is essential for any multi-pet household. It contains strategies for introducing pets to one another as well as valueable tips for everyday care.
This book provided a lot of useful and caring information........1998-03-02
I really enjoyed Cynthia Miller's book. Living with a houseful of pets myself, I found the book not only helped me with the four listed species (cats, dogs, birds and rabbits), but it helped me with my other pets. This bok was written in a format that is helpful for both the novice and the experienced pet owner. Hats off to Cynthia Miller!
Book Description
The authors' new approach to learning two playing techniques offers a systematic method for mastering the modern, legato technique needed for organ music composed after 1750, as well as an articulated technique for earlier works. The authors also present useful information on accompanying anthems and solos and on adapting piano and orchestral accompaniments to the organ.
Customer Reviews:
Appraisal of ORGAN TECHNIQUE: MODERN AND EARLY.......2007-05-31
I have been using ORGAN TECHNIQUE: MODERN AND EARLY for less than a month with three students who are just beginning organ study. I am very pleased with the content of the book, and how it is laid out. There is attention to details that other organ books that I have used in the past do not include.
I like the specific instructions on manual and pedal technique, and I am particularly pleased with the exercises and the selections of organ literature that have been included in this book.
I am very pleased with this book.
Organ Technique solid book.......2006-08-14
In the last three years I have been learning the Organ, and this book is an excellent guide and tool for doing that. It is easy to read and easy to work with -- but to learn the organ, cotninues to demand lots of time for pracitice!

Customer Reviews:
Good, but lacking some later material.......2005-06-12
I am a 14 year old pianist, and I love Ragtime & stride. This is a good collection. It comprises of many Joplin rags, 2 Eubie Blake rags, some James Scott, etc, and some Early Blues. It is one of the biggest ragtime collections available. I am disappointed, however, that some of the later (ie, 1915-25), more advanced ragtime is absent. It really could have used some 'Kitten on the Keys', or 'Cataract Rag' to "break the ice" on what is otherwise a bit of a dull, repetitive folio. What is there is good, but most is basically just the same.
I would instead turn to Dover for some more interesting ragtime folios
The Best of the Best.......2005-01-25
The Library of Ragtime and Early Blues by Amy Appleby and Peter Pickow is Outstanding.
As a New York school music educator, this is the best and most complete musical tribute of this era that I have seen. It deserves 10 stars and will definitely be a fantastic addition to add to your home music library. I highly recommend it for the more advanced piano student since ragtime and blues can often be a bit challenging to play.
The book has a beautiful introduction, table of contents (grouped by composer) and index. I like the fact that the name is printed on the edge of the white plastic binding, making it easy to find on a book shelf. All of the Amsco books in the library series that I own are attractively the same height. Each and every "rag" in this book is not only fun and exciting to play but appears to be easy on the eyes due to the fact that it is printed clearly on heavy, white bond paper.
My favorite ragtime composer is Scott Joplin. To my delight, there are 22 of his original compositions in this book. I began playing my favorite of all ragtime pieces, "The Maple Leaf Rag" the minute I received this book as a gift. It was the best gift ever! I didn't even know that Scott Joplin wrote a "Wall Street Rag." I liked the annotations over the different sections of this piece, such as "brokers feeling melancholy" or "good times have come."
I would be remiss if I didn't mention some of the other 40 composers in this book such as James Scott, W.C. Handy, Joseph Lamb, Scott Hayden, Irving Berlin, Tom Turpin and Eubie Blake, etc. There is also a whole section on Ragtime songs, such as Irving Berlin's "Alexander's Ragtime Band" along with cakewalks, classic rags, blues rags and folk rags. I have hours of enjoyment ahead of me.
GREAT collection of ragtime and blues.......2004-02-26
What a wonderful collection! I'm an intermediate-level pianist and relative newcomer to ragtime/blues piano. I was looking for a big sample of all these styles, and this is definitely it. Over 300 pages of stuff, in a sturdy book with a spiral binder (a must-have for big piano books!) I've played this book 'til my hands were sore, and there's still lots I haven't gotten to yet!
Contains some of Joplin's good stuff, but that's widely available. What's really neat about this book is the great selection of other ragtimers' best -- James Scott's Grace and Beauty, Great Scott Rag, Eubie Blake's Chevy Chase Rag, some other great pieces I'd never heard of.
Also, classic old-time blues included, such as W.C. Handy's Memphis Blues and St. Louis Blues, Ballin' The Jack, Tiger Rag, etc.
Also, some wonderful pieces called Cake Walks; kinda like ragtime but slower. Really lovely stuff!
Clear, easy-to-read sheet music. A lot of Scott Joplin........1999-08-05
Includes: The Entertainer, Easy Winners, Swipsey, Maple Leaf Rag, Elite Syncopations, Weeping Willow, and more of Joplin. Also contains several cake walks, ... delightful pieces not often heard. This book removed the mystery of ragtime for me, an amature pianist, and I discovered to my great amazement, that, with some effort ... I can play it, even the Maple Leaf!

Simply the Best.......2002-05-06
If you're interested in understanding Cicero, this is THE book to buy.
Helpful during college class.......2000-06-21
My professor in college used this commentary while we translated the Pro Caelio. It cleared up many problem areas and explained what was going on when our text was fuzzy. If you can find it, get it!
Book Description
With more than 800 Clematis species and cultivated varieties from which to choose, gardeners and growers have been inundated with options. Even more frustrating for some has been the absence of a single comprehensive reference with which to identify the numerous cultivars. This new volume, written by distinguished clematis experts and backed by the authority of the British Clematis Society, is the first picture encyclopedia on the genus to encompass the garden-worthy species and hybrids.
This long-awaited book is separated into two sections: the first is devoted to the care and cultivation of clematis, while the second provides an A — Z directory of more than 550 plants, from the acclaimed large-flowered forms to the less-familiar shrubby, subshrubby, and herbaceous forms that are beginning to be available. Using everyday language, the authors provide plant descriptions that include information on synonyms, origin, plant habit and height, flowers, pruning group, flowering period, cultural requirements, recommended uses in the garden, and hardiness zones. The text is accompanied by more than 650 magnificent color photos, making this encyclopedia an indispensable reference and guide.
Customer Reviews:
Encyclopedia is the Right Word.......2006-06-25
The word "encyclopedia" is sometimes overused, but not in the case of this book by Mary K. Toomey. The reader will enjoy learning about the huge number of clematis varieties with information on each one. The author even includes the different names that some varieties have in the market. This volume is a must for the serious gardener and especially for the clematis enthusiast. I highly recommend it.
If you can only own one.......2005-04-08
I own every book ever written about clematis. Unfortunately, this book was written by a Brit. That's the only negative for a North American grower. If you can own only one book on clematis this is the one. The author is very generous with her information. At least read this one cover to cover before buying anything else.
Book Description
Clematis are among the more versatile and diverse plants for any garden; few flowers can fill so many garden niches, from specimen plants to dwarf perennials, or container selections to multistory vines. Wherever they are found, their blooms never fail to induce rapture and awe. The carefully chosen clematis can't be equaled when planted in the right situation and pruned in the right way, but horticultural horrors can ensue when beginners (or experts) overreach and force plants where they do not belong. Linda Beutler provides instructions for newcomers and master gardeners alike on plant selection, cultivation, and design, and debunks a few myths along the way. With a distinct nod to the wonderful traditions for growing clematis in the British Isles and Europe, she may be the first author to provide a distinctly American perspective on the subject. Filled with 115 beautiful photographs and the incalculable wisdom of hard-won experience, Gardening with Clematis will be required reading for all adventurous gardeners.
Customer Reviews:
big disappointmnet.......2005-04-08
I had great hopes for this book; hope that it would be the first REAL book about clematis for the North American grower. Don't bother. The author's style is too casual and cavalier. There isn't even one really new cultivar. She should have stayed with photography. By the way, I have a HUGE clematis garden. Trust me. I own every book ever written about clematis!!
twining for clematis .......2004-09-21
This is a great book for the beginner and the experienced I couldn't put it down the information was practical. You can tell this is written by someone that actually grows these. The photos are great I longed for more of them. The chapters are nice you don't have to wade through the text to find what you are looking for. I liked the chapters on pairing the clematis with other plants that act as the support. This was inspired I get really tired of clematis on the trellis routine. I think every gardener that has grown or wants to grow clematis would benifit from this book. I sure did.
Book Description
Clematis, a type of flowering vine, is a favorite with flower-lovers due to its bright blues, purples, and magentas as well as its huge variety of shapes, hues, and blooming seasons. Chalk Hill Farms in Healdsburg, CA, grows over 80 varieties of premium clematis in open fields, and photos of the farm make a gorgeous backdrop for useful information on how to grow, cut, arrange, and care for this well-loved woody climber. Award-winning floral designer Ron Morgan provides inspiring arrangements.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful.......2007-06-01
Absolutely beautiful presentation. Wonderful glossary as well as stunning floral arrangements. An absolute must for serious or novice botanists.
An exciting book.......2007-03-23
This is not a stodgy gardening book! No gloomy instructions by a horticultural authority with a bad haircut, tweed skirt, and sensible shoes; no dreary shots of the manor and its perenial beds.
This is a lively story of Clematis and the people who restored its place in the floral trade. The arrangements are exquisite, playful and inspiring. The colors are perfect; no washed out whites or saturated blues. The writing is personal; as if one were reading letters from friends who are enchanted by the beauty of the flower and enjoy its cultivation.
Chalk Hill is part of an exciting new Northern California agriculture----- the best wines, slow food, organic farming, intriguing nurseries, and now, a Clematis nursery with cut flowers, olive oil; and a balsamic vinegar barn.
As a gardener, I appreciate the credit Kaye Heafey gives to those who do the hands on work. Too often we have been hidden behind gloomy old perennial beds.
Pretty pictures.......2007-03-18
I guess this book is what it purports to be. It is a 'celebration'. It is not a very informative book for the North American clematis grower. It's a good coffee table picture book with many beautiful but irrelevant to clematis pictures.
A single volume, comprehensive, authoritative, beautifully presented, and thoroughly 'user friendly' reference .......2007-03-07
The collaborative work of Kaye Heafey and Ron Morgan, and enhanced with the brilliant photography of Keith Lewis, "A Celebration Of Clematis" is the story of how the Chalk Hill Clematis (a established flower farm and renowned clematis nursery) was created. Showcasing this unique flower grower, the reader is treated to over forty varieties of clematis, as well as Chalk Hill's memorable interiors and beautiful landscape. The newly established Mary Toomey Clematis garden is also features, presenting the potential of clematis that is available for any home garden. Enhanced with a glossary of three hundred varieties, as well as sound, practical information on the selection, planting, care, and cultivation of clematis, "A Celebration Of Clematis" is a single volume, comprehensive, authoritative, beautifully presented, and thoroughly 'user friendly' reference which is especially recommended for personal, professional, academic, and community library Gardening & Landscaping reference collections.
A Celebration of Clematis: From the Gardens of Chalk Hill Nursery.......2007-02-11
This is an excellent book of outstanding photos, making me wish Chalk Hill was my own yard. My only criticism is that I wish there was more text to describe the varieties, as the map in the back does not give any detail about the varieties shown.

Customer Reviews:
Inexpensive and informative, but not the best........2007-01-20
`Clematis' by Andrew Mikolajski and `Clematis for all Seasons' by John Feltwell are two slim, relatively inexpensive guides to a very popular flowering perennial climbing vine with a large geographical range (although not quite the great range as the ubiquitous orchid), but exceptionally well suited to temperate climates. The first question which comes to mind when comparing the books is the fact that the latter lists for almost twice the cost as the former, in spite of the fact that Feltwell's book is soft covered and Mikolajski's volume is hard covered with a dust jacket. Thankfully, the comparison is a bit easier in that the more expensive book also has almost exactly twice the pages as the less expensive book, so all issues rely strictly on quality.
The most dramatic difference I can see between the two books is that while both group clematis species and cultivars into three, the two authors do it in a slightly different manner. Mikolajski groups by blooming season and Feltwell groups by when and how to prune. I sense the two methods end up putting plants in the same groups. It just depends on how you want to think about them.
Another difference I see between the two books is the fact that Feltwell's photography seems just a bit more vibrant and more skillfully done. Where Mikolajski's pictures of individual plants are often very small, Feltwell's pics are uniformly almost life-sized and cropped just right so the picture features the flower and nothing but the flower.
Even though both books cover very similar material, Feltwell's layout just seems to be more inviting. He looks at the genus clematis in many different and useful ways, by season (and pruning group), by color, by location (microclimates) and by horticultural technique.
Due to the difference in the number of pages, it is no surprise to see all subjects given at least twice the space in Feltwell. While `Pests and Diseases' cover two pages in Mikolajski, they cover four pages in two different chapters in Feltwell.
Lastly, Feltwell's `directory' of clematis cultivars seems superior in that its information seems just a smidge more useful. For example on the `Maureen' cultivar, Mikolajski gives size and color, but Feltwell adds that the flowers fade fast. On `Minuet', Feltwell adds that the cultivar looks especially well growing into trees. Mikolajski simply gives us color, size and season. Also, Feltwell's directory isn't limited to `others' that he has not discussed elsewhere.
While I commonly buy two or more cookbooks on the same subject, here, I would opt for owning only Feltwell's volume. My one caveat is that much `local knowledge' is about growing the genus in the UK but I see on way in which this interferes with the value of the information in the book.
Book Description
Written by three distinguished clematis experts, the Timber Press Pocket Guide to Clematis profiles 300 stunning plants from an international selection of garden-worthy species and hybrids, from long-time favorites to the highly sought-after new cultivars coming out of Poland, Estonia, Latvia, and Japan. All the plants are readily available at clematis nurseries, including 100 award winners which have proven themselves to experienced and inexperienced gardeners alike. Specific cultivation information is given for each plant, including hardiness zones, light and temperature needs, and time of flowering. Illustrated with 320 photographs of flowers at the height of bloom, when their true color is best seen, this pocket guide is a valuable complement to the authors' Illustrated Encyclopedia of Clematis and a compact reference for taking to the nursery or garden center.

Finest photos.......2000-12-29
I own 20 Clematis books and this one is the one use to learn the true color of a clematis before combining it with any companion. So many wonderful photographs and discriptions.
Clematis for all seasons.......2000-05-05
Excellent photographs and information on growing clematis. The information on propagation seemed rather sparse, however. My pet peeve with this book: from the beginning of the book the abbreviation "A.G.M." is used after the name of many varieties, but we don't learn what A.G.M. means until page 123 of the book! The author should put this valuable info at the VERY BEGINNING of the book.
